1. gtho4 2. Dizart 3. Sypher
Four years into the revitalized golf comps, and we have our first Grand Slam candidate. gtho4 wins the US Open this year after taking home the Masters in 2013 and the PGA Championship last year. He has a chance to complete the Slam next month in the Open Championship.
gtho4 won in a tight finish over Dizart by 1 stroke. His unique Jason Day pick, who battled through vertigo during the 3rd round after collapsing on the final hole the 2nd day, and Adam Scott, pulled him to victory. Meanwhile, two late Rory McIlroy bogeys sealed Dizart’s fate.
The fight for 3rd was equally as close, but Jordan Spieth’s birdie on the final hole was enough to give Sypher the bronze over ozzz2002. ozzz was one of the three tippers to not choose the Masters (and now US Open) champion.
As was just mentioned, Jordan Spieth put together solid performances and fended off a furious rally by Louis Oosthuizen in order to win his second major of the year. Oosthuizen birdied 6 of the final 7 holes to hit -4 and tie Spieth at the top. Dustin Johnson would birdie #17 shortly thereafter, making a 3-way tie at the top.
However, Spieth was too much. Despite double-bogeying #17 to bring him back to -4, he composed himself to birdie #18 and take the lead alone. Johnson followed in the final group, and found himself 18 feet away for eagle and the championship. He rolled it four feet by, and the return put just missed left, leaving him at -4.
The course itself faced plenty of criticism, with many outspoken critics of the conditions, notably the greens (see Ian Poulter and Billy Horschel). Henrik Stenson compared them to broccoli, while Rory McIlroy disagreed, noting the color was more like cauliflower. For a perfect example, Google “Darren Clarke putt.”
Oosthuizen went unpicked this time around, despite his 2nd-place finish. Less-known names like Cameron Smith, Branden Grace, and Shane Lowry also went unpicked, as well as Charl Schwartzel; meaning that half of the top 10 was not picked for this comp. On the bright side, none of us picked Tiger Woods, who found himself 3rd to last after the first day and finished 6th to last before being cut.
The Open Championship will be held at St. Andrews on July 16-19.
