To hear the media accounts of the geography around this area of upstate New York. you would think it was in darkest Africa with all the references to swamps, jungle-like forest and thickets. I have been up there several times and find the surroundings quite inspirational. If you follow my link you will see what the terrain is like around Ausable Chasm, which runs north toward the prison but then turns right and flows into upper Lake Champlain (which is also a beautiful bit of country). If you go to see the Chasm, I hope you get to walk the gang walk along part of the escarpment and also to take the dory ride through the rapids section. Around every corner is a nook where you'd imagine Rip Van Winkle might have laid down for a nap, never to be seen again. Perfect escape terrain. One wonders why they put a prison in the middle of escape heaven. Today marks the 11th day the two escapees have been gone.

PS: Clinton in the prison name is from the location of the prison in Clinton County, New York and has nothing to do with the former President or his wife, the ex-Senator from NY.

The name of the prison is Clinton Correctional Facility, not to be confused with the Clinton County jail.
It is commonly referred to as Dannemora. Fans of Law & Order will recognize that name. The county was named for the George Clinton, the first Governor of New York.

I doubt the escaped men are near any tourist attractions. Since it has been over a week, they probably have been enjoying Canada for several days.

Well, they didn't head directly into Canada.

Richard Matt, one of the escaped men, was shot and killed earlier today approximately 30 miles from the prison.

To the NW, just outside Malone, NY and Lake Titus. The takedown was reported to be done by a Border Patrol team.
