1. Dizart 2. gtho4 3. paper_aero
Dizart takes home our version of the Claret Jug by cruising to victory in the Open Championship. Congratulations!
Dizart won by choosing four golfers who all broke 280, the only tipper to do so. He was only one of three to pick Louis Oosthuizen, one of the final three golfers in the championship playoff. No one chose Zach Johnson or Marc Leishman, the other two competitors.
gtho4 took second, as he and Dizart swapped places from the US Open. Meanwhile, paper_aero, the Masters champion from this year, took third. We officially have our three heavyweights in the golf comps.
There also appears to be a friendly rivalry forming in the quest for last, although neither could do so. Howie72 ended up beating srini701, the two finishing in 8th and 9th, respectively, but were “beaten” out by a newcomer to the golf comps, although no stranger to our comps in general. Welcome to KrivoyRog!
In a move of what we can only assume to be brazen confidence, ozzz2002 took only 4 golfers, choosing Adam Scott twice in order to truly show his Aussie pride. Even without getting rid of any of his scores, ozzz only finished 9 strokes off the podium. A hearty golf clap is in order.
Hopes for a Spieth Slam were dashed in the waning minutes at St. Andrews. Spieth birdied #16 to tie for the lead (only 1 of 3 to do so on the day), then bogeyed #17, and finally ended by missing a birdie putt from off the green by inches to remain one out of the lead. The 21-year old (22 next week) will have to wait a short time for his third major.
Instead, it was a miraculous run by Marc Leishman up the leaderboard that stunned the crowd. He made the cut by 1 stroke, but went -14 in the final two rounds to tie for the lead. Zach Johnson and Louis Oosthuizen both had to birdie #18 in order to finish at -15, and the three ended up tied, necessitating a playoff – an aggregate of four holes.
Leishman found himself essentially out after the first hole, earning a bogey while the other two birdied #1. Johnson took the lead by 1 after #2 with another birdie. Everyone birdied #17 and parred #18, giving Johnson the Claret Jug.
Things may have looked different if not for an epic collapse by Dustin Johnson. The other Johnson started round 3 as the leader, but then posted the highest combined round 3 & 4 total of anyone who made the cut, ending tied for 49th.
The PGA Championship rounds out the majors this year at Whistling Straits on August 13-16. Hope to see you there!
