Tipping Comp

Another autumn falls upon us, and with it brings a new Premier League season. That can only mean that the FA Premiership League Tipping Competition must be back for its 16th iteration.

Who, if anyone, will be able to prevent N-Bomb's three-peat? He completely trounced the rest of the field last year, leading solo for the final 26 weeks. The year before he won by 2 in the final weeks. paper_aero has been second two of the last three years, and illiniman14 has been on the podium both of the past two years. We play on to see if the dynasty will continue.

The rules are as simple as you can get. A correct pick gets you a point, and an incorrect pick does not. Failure to pick results in a default, the wooden spoon score for that week. After 38 weeks, we will crown a champion. Tiebreakers are differential between weekly wins and wooden spoons, followed by weekly wins.

The season begins on Saturday, August 8.

Welcome to the inaugural week of the 2014-15 season! A hearty welcome to ElfTwinkle and KrivoyRog, and with BxBarracuda as the only no-show, we have a larger field this year than last.

PaulE starts the year on a strong note, as he is the only tipper to leave above 50%, a feat upon itself. Only he and ozzz2002 had so little faith in newcomer AFC Bournemouth that they picked Aston Villa to win on the road, and they did just that, to the tune of 2-0.

KrivoyRog and wwe84 were the only tippers to get one match correct solo. Krivoy didn’t give defending champion Chelsea any credit, and it paid off as they drew with Swansea. Meanwhile, wwe84 believed enough in newcomer Watford to draw at Everton, and indeed they did.

paper_aero sees a unique spoonless streak end this week. His last spoon was in the final week of the 2013-14 season. After going the entire 2014-15 season without a spoon, he starts off this year with a spoon, giving him a streak of exactly one season.

Last year’s podium finishers did not start well. Defending champion N-Bomb sits 2 back from PaulE, while the aforementioned paper_aero is 4 back and illiniman14 is between them at 3 back. With 37 weeks to go, the field is wide open, and we look forward to a great season!

LeoDaVinci takes a strong week 2 right into first place, replacing PaulE at the top of the heap. He put his confidence in the road teams this week, which paid off, as once again half of the road teams won for the second week in a row.

On a yearly basis, road team winning percentage bobbles around 30%. This year, road teams have won half of the time, leading to some lower totals than we might be accustomed to.

The field remains mostly tight, with all but 4 tippers within 4 points of the lead.

For the third week in a row, we have a new face atop the leaderboard. As LeoDaVinci dropped back, wwe84 leapt to the front for his first solo lead ever in the FAPL comp and his first time in the top spot since his very first week tipping in the FAPL in 2011. Best of luck holding on to it!

In a week full of draws, ElfTwinkle hit 8/9 matches that at least 1 person got correct (nobody picked a Bournemouth road victory at West Ham). She sprinted from 15th to 8th and finds herself only 3 out of the lead.

In past years, home teams won just less than half the time, with road teams winning 30% and draws occurring about 25% of the time. This year, we’ve had a tad of a shift with road teams winning just less than half the time, draws now over a third of the time, and home teams have won a mere 20% of the first 30 matches.

wwe84 keeps his lead for another week, but ElfTwinkle sprints up the leaderboard with a second straight weekly win and has gone from 15th to 2nd in just 2 weeks!

You might’ve thought we would’ve figured out that this year is the year of draws and road teams, but no. Only 3 home teams won yet again this week, leading to nobody picking either the Chelsea or Liverpool losses.

In one not-so-fun-but-what-the-heck-I’ll-mention-it-anyway fact, we’ve gone from 79 correct picks in week 2, to 69 correct picks in week 3, to 59 correct picks in week 4. Here’s hoping for an 89 (or better) when we return in 2 weeks after some international play!

PaulE started week 1 in the lead, and he returns there again with his second weekly win. He was matched in that regard by 4 others, who keep his lead to only 1. So far no one has been able to get a lead of more than 2 points in the first 5 weeks, something that hasn’t happened since 2012.

For the first time this year, home teams decided to make a strong showing, with 7 home teams winning their matches. The other 3 home teams (Crystal Palace, Sunderland, and West Brom) failed to score a single goal between them.

An interesting streak ended this week as well. The last 39 times every single tipper picked the same team, it was either Chelsea (12 times), Manchester City (10), Arsenal (9), Manchester United (5), or Liverpool (3). This week, all 16 tippers chose Leicester City [as well as Arsenal] to beat Aston Villa, and they did just that! We haven’t seen everyone pick a team outside of those five since December 2, 2014 when everyone chose Swansea to beat QPR... which they did as well.

PaulE retains the lead over LeoDaVinci as both score a weekly win, while both wwe84 and illiniman14 drop back. It was a very low-scoring week as the win constituted only 5 correct picks, but those 2 made the most of it and now have the top 2 spots alone.

Once again it was a weak week for home teams, as only Bournemouth, Tottenham, and Chelsea defended their home turf. The former 2 teams made up for 40% of this week’s correct picks alone, as 11 tippers each picked those matches correctly.

West Ham’s victory over Manchester City on the road today puts them up to 3-0-0 on the road this year, including a victory over Arsenal. Chelsea and Liverpool remain in the bottom half of the table while West Ham and Bournemouth occupy the third and fourth spots, respectively. This time last year Southampton occupied the second spot in the table and finished seventh, while Liverpool was fourteenth and finished sixth. Will the traditional powers retake their top spots?

PaulE remains in the top spot, but now he is joined there by LeoDaVinci. LeoDaVinci snagged the top spot at the last second, as Everton pulled out a victory in the waning minutes. ozzz2002 did a masterful job notching 9 of the 10 matches this week, even if a clerical error gave him his due a little later than usual.

For the second time this year, there were no matches where everyone or no one got a point. ElfTwinkle was the only tipper not to take Manchester United, dg_dave was the only tipper to pick Tottenham, while George95 and KrivoyRog both picked a Chelsea draw and failed to pick Liverpool.

Home teams pulled their weight during a rare week for this year, winning in half of the available matches. After a resounding win, Manchester United takes over the top spot in the table, while Chelsea remains far back in 14th with their draw against Newcastle, still behind 2 of the 3 squads promoted last year. Leicester’s loss against Arsenal pushes them back into 8th.

PaulE recaptures the lead on his own as LeoDaVinci misses this week. wwe84 is back into second. More than half of the field is within 5 points of the lead with 30 weeks left, promising plenty of climbs and falls in this comp.

It was a generally terrible week for all tippers. Everyone got Manchester City’s win over Newcastle, but nobody picked Southampton’s upset over Chelsea or a draw of AFC Bournemouth and Watford (although 2 did pick a road win for Watford). Only the Man City and Crystal Palace victories resulted in double digit pickers getting a point. paper_aero and Sypher were the only two that managed to get at least half of the matches correct this week.

Arsenal’s big win over Manchester United puts the former in second and takes the latter out of the top spot on the table and into third, while Man City’s resounding 6-1 victory takes them to that vacated spot. Crystal Palace and Leicester City round out the top five, while Liverpool is still hanging around the middle of the table and Chelsea is now below all three squads promoted from the Football League Championship last year, but still two matches at a minimum from being in the relegation zone.

PaulE keeps his lead with a strong day, but can’t extend his lead as wwe84 matches his every step. gtho4, ElfTwinkle, dg_dave, and Sypher all get the weekly win as the entire field is within 9 points of each other with 29 weeks left.

Everyone was in agreement on three different matches, and we all got them correct. Chelsea, Manchester City, and Arsenal won with a total score of 10-1 against their opponents. All but LeoDaVinci chose West Brom at home, and they also came out with a 1-0 victory.

With their victories, Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United, and West Ham all retain the top 4 spots on the table. Leicester drew with Southampton, and they keep the #5 spot thanks to a Crystal Palace loss. Chelsea remains in the bottom half of the table despite their victory.

dg_dave snagged 7 correct tips yet again this week and gets his 2nd straight weekly win to go along with them. With the way the standings are packed, he’s gone from 16th to 11th in 2 weeks and has gained 4 points on the leader, leaving him only 6 back. FussBudget hit the other end of the spectrum with only one correct pick in Arsenal over Everton.

PaulE remains at the top of the standings for the 6th straight week, but he is now joined by wwe84. Those 2 have held the lead all but one week (week 2, when LeoDaVinci was at the top), but this is the first time they have held it jointly. Those three have held the top 3 spots for the last 5 weeks. However, the standings are still tightly packed, with every active tipper within 10 points and KrivoyRog only 2 in the back.

Chelsea disappointed yet again (at least to everyone but wwe84) by losing the West Ham, sending them back to 15th on the table. West Ham moves up to third, having now beaten Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City. Leicester won again, keeping them in the top 5 despite Tottenham’s resounding win over AFC Bournemouth. Meanwhile, Aston Villa appears to be headed for an ECL berth next year if they can’t get things turned around with 8 losses already on the year.

PaulE picks up yet another win and for the first time this year leads alone by 2 points. LeoDaVinci reclaims 2nd with a win as well while wwe84 falls back to 3rd with his first spoon of the year.

The field is still very packed through 11 weeks, as 16 of the 17 tippers are within 10 points of each other, while KrivoyRog is on the cusp of going default. With no one pulling away after this much time, this year’s comp could come right down to the last week.

Chelsea lost yet again, pushing them down to 15th in the table and only 4 points out of the relegation zone. West Ham, fresh off another big win, fell flat against Watford and dropped to 6th with Manchester United’s draw and Tottenham’s win. Meanwhile, both Manchester City and Arsenal won to solidify their top spots on the table while Leicester City won on the road to snag the third spot.
