NCAA Football
2015

Rules:
1. One point for a correct tip.
2. The deadline will normally be Friday midnight FT time. One point will be deducted for late tips, after a period of grace of two or three hours past the deadline.
3. Late starters come in at the lowest score, or lowest active tipper if the lowest tipper has not tipped for four consecutive weeks.
4. Default score will be the away teams, or in the case of Neutral Site games, the team listed first.
5. Tips not in by kickoff off of the first game on Saturday receive default score for the week, tips not in by kickoff for games played before Saturday will only receive default tips for those games played early.

Bonus points:
1. One point will be awarded for a solo pick (or one of two if 10+ tippers).
2. One point will be awarded for picks where the winning team was more then a 10 point underdog.
**Lines will be posted on Wednesday or Thursday each week and be taken from http://www.vegasinsider.com/college-football/odds/las-vegas/, preferably from the sportsbook.ag line**
3. One point if a player scores 13+/16.
4. A tipper is ineligible for bonus if player picks fewer than 2 home teams.
5. A tipper is ineligible for bonus if player tips fewer than 2 underdogs (in pick 'em games both teams count as underdogs).

Weeks 15 and 16 use Bowl Games to make up that weeks tipping schedule.

Some Bowl games don't make the schedule so that we can keep with the 16 game per week set-up and the National Championship Game will not be on the schedule since the teams for that game won't be known until the first round of the Playoff format have taken place.

  • The 2015 NCAA football season begins with a bang and a few upsets as I take over the comp after five excellent years under BxBarracuda.

  • Returning champion Dizart and George95 both navigated themselves to the top of the pack at the beginning of the season, notching 13 correct picks and a bonus point to go along with them. Neither got the Northwestern upset over Stanford or the favored Texas A&M over Arizona State, but didnt fall into several pitfalls that others went for.

  • The biggest swing of the week came at the end of the BYU-Nebraska game. With 1 second left down 28-27 at the Cornhusker 42, BYU passed the long shot 59-yard field goal and instead hit a Hail Mary to win 33-28. In one second, fortunes flipped for the worse for 9 of our tippers.

  • Meanwhile, Northwestern shocked the college football world with a 16-6 upset victory over #21 Stanford at home as a 12-point underdog, resulting in 3 underdog bonus points. The only other top-25 team to lose this weekend was actually an underdog, as #15 Arizona State fell to Texas A&M 38-17. The other 2 upset victories this week were Temple over Penn State 27-10 and previously-mentioned BYU, both 7-point underdogs.

  • #1 Ohio State survived a weak first half with a 28-point explosion against Virginia Tech; #2 TCU and #5 Michigan State looked sluggish; #3 Alabama trounced #20 Wisconsin 35-17; and #4 Baylor appears to have the same offense as we have come to expect.

  • Another year is upon us, with several traditional powers rising back to former glory, current powers looking to make the playoffs, and plenty more upsets to surely come!

  • spoonless streaks:
    George95 .. no spoons since starting in 2011 (66 wks) + 1 week = 67
    Howie72 .. last spoon week 10 of 2011-12 (56 wks) + 1 week = 57

wwe84 seemed to pick all 3 underdog matches...why did he get only 1 bonus point?

The other 2 were only 7-point underdogs; has to be a 10-point underdog to get a bonus. Underlined teams aren't necessarily 10-point underdogs.

  • ElfTwinkle was in 2nd-to-last last week, but powered by 4 bonus points (including a perfect bonus), she is now in first by 3 points! In a week filled with 6 upsets, she hit 5 of them, including 14-point underdog Houston.

  • Most of the other tippers are bottled up within 2 points of each other. This includes Sypher, who picked the right week to miss his picks, as 10 road teams won, and he kept up with the pack. Nobody outside of ElfTwinkle, however, managed to notch a bonus point this week, even though 4 tried to get the underdog bonus by picking 11-point home underdog Nevada, who was then summarily crushed by #22 Arizona 44-20.

  • Houston provided the first shock of the day as they upended Louisville (my poor, poor 0-2 alma mater) 34-31 thanks to a missed long field goal. They were then followed by Bowling Green laying down the hammer on Maryland 48-27. Toledo followed suit to complete a great day for the MAC by taking down #18 Arkansas 16-12. Kentucky, Temple, and BYU finished the day with somewhat less shocking upsets.

  • The closest potential show-stopper was 41-point underdog Jacksonville State taking #6 Auburn to overtime after leading for much of the game. Despite the Auburn victory, they plummeted down to #18 in this week's poll.

  • The matchup of the week was no letdown, as #5 Michigan State welcomed #7 Oregon to East Lansing. The Spartans trailed for a mere 1:08, and spent the rest of the game either tied or up by as many as 10 points. By the end of the day, they earned revenge for their early season loss in Eugene last year.

  • spoonless streaks:
    George95 .. no spoons since starting in 2011 (66 wks) + 2 weeks = 68
    Howie72 .. last spoon week 10 of 2011-12 (56 wks) + 2 weeks = 58

  • ElfTwinkle remains well ahead of the field by 3 points, while the next 3 points encompasses the next 7 tippers. There was plenty of shifting behind her, however, as Dizart and illiniman14 fall back while dg_dave and George95 ramp up to the other podium spots. dg_dave pulled an ElfTwinkle maneuver himself this week, going from 10th to 2nd by only missing 2 games.

  • gillyharold pulled off an interesting task with his spoon this week - he actually scored more than both Dizart and illiniman14 after his two bonus points, as he joined ozzz2002 in the upset pick of Stanford. Sypher missed again this week, and while it didn't hurt him last week, this week the road teams did below the spoon score and he lost plenty of ground.

  • Prior to Saturday, the last 3 times Stanford was at least a 9-point underdog to USC, they not only beat the spread, but won the game. #6 USC entered Saturday as a 10.5-point favorite, and true to form, Stanford toppled their foes in Los Angeles 41-31. The other big upset of the day occurred in the SEC, as #15 Mississippi beat #2 Alabama for the second year in a row, this time in Tuscaloosa.

  • Perhaps the most entertaining game of the day to watch was a mid-major matchup between Memphis and Bowling Green. Involving two of the best up-and-coming coaches (Justin Fuente and Dino Babers, respectively), the teams combined for 1,120 yards of offense and included a spectacular fake reverse-turned flea flicker by Memphis for a 62-yard touchdown. If you wonder why these teams are being featured for us to pick, this game is why.

  • Many ranked teams stumbled in week 3. Aside from the previously-mentioned upsets, #1 Ohio State trailed Northern Illinois for most of the first half. The Buckeyes fumbled late in the 4th quarter up 20-13, but their defense held up and that was the final score, although they lost many first place votes in the process. #22 Missouri was down 6-2 after the first quarter (the 6 points Connecticut scored was a touchdown and a blocked PAT), and they won 9-6 in a game hopefully no one remembers. #4 Michigan State also played an uncomfortably close game with Air Force, although not nearly bad enough to keep them out of the #2 spot for this week.

  • spoonless streaks:
    George95 .. no spoons since starting in 2011 (66 wks) + 3 weeks = 69
    Howie72 .. last spoon week 10 of 2011-12 (56 wks) + 3 weeks = 59

  • wwe84 jumps to the front of the pack with a weekly win supplemented by 3 bonus points. Not only did he notch 12 correct tips (along with N-Bomb, now in second, and Sypher), but was the only tipper to take East Carolina and joined ozzz2002 in the massive upset pick of #18 Utah over #13 Oregon.

  • The first 3 weeks saw 3 10-point underdogs win in this comp, and week 4 did not let us down, either. Utah entered Saturday as an 11.5-point underdog. They finished off the day turning that spread around by 53.5 points, resulting in a 62-20 victory over Oregon, knocking the Ducks out of the top 25 for the first time since 2009.

  • Will Muschamp was fired from Florida after a disappointing tenure and 7-5 season, so the school hired Jim McElwain from Colorado State. Four games into the season, they faced a 27-14 fourth quarter deficit against Tennessee. The Gators marched 86 yards to close it to 6 points, forced a 3-and-out, and came back with another touchdown. The Volunteers faced a 50-yard field goal, but a 5-yard penalty pushed them too far back, and the missed attempt left the new head coach 4-0.

  • Charlie Strong, the second-year head coach at another power, Texas, isn't having such an easy transition back to success. Following a loss to California due to a missed extra point, the Longhorns aimed to knock off #24 Oklahoma State at home. After the first half, the Texas offense looked like it was clicking, up 20-14. However, it stalled from there. The only points they scored in the second half were from an interception return, allowing the Cowboys to tie the game at 27 and later take the lead at 30, where it would be a final.

  • Elsewhere, Michigan rolled over #22 BYU 31-0; West Virginia rolled over Maryland 45-6; Auburn continued its epic slide with a 17-9 loss to Mississippi State; and Northern Illinois disappointed many tippers following their upset bid against Ohio State by laying an egg in a 17-14 loss to Boston College. Also, Baylor is really good (and Rice won't be showing up in this comp for the rest of the year).

  • #3 TCU faced the biggest scare of a top-10 team, trading blows with Texas Tech all the way to the end. Down 52-47 and facing a 4th and goal, TCU threw a pass high of a receiver in the end zone, who managed to get one hand on it, tipping it up, a second receiver came around and snagged it before it (and he) went out of bounds, getting one foot in and giving them the victory 55-52.

  • spoonless streaks:
    George95 .. no spoons since starting in 2011 (66 wks) + 4 weeks = 70
    Howie72 .. last spoon week 10 of 2011-12 (56 wks) + 4 weeks = 60

  • ElfTwinkle was the only tipper to crack double digits and she moves back into first place in a tie with wwe84. She was helped along by two solo picks in Iowa and Notre Dame. On the flip side was illiniman14, who goes back into 10th while picking up his first spoon.

  • ozzz2002 helped himself along with 4 bonus points this week, matching ElfTwinkles week 2 bonus point total. He was the only tipper to snag the underdog bonus for Arizona States victory over UCLA, and was also the only tipper to take undefeated Florida at home.

  • The big news for us was the victory of 14-point underdog Arizona State over UCLA 38-23. Through 5 weeks we have had 5 10-point underdogs (or more) win, meaning that those bonus points are out there if you're willing to take the risk. illiniman14 and gtho4 tested the waters by taking 17-point underdog Arizona, but they laid an egg against Stanford 55-17. ozzz2002 got Arizona State, and tried to double his money by taking Texas, but they were trounced 50-7 by TCU.

  • Several top teams found themselves in struggles on Saturday. #1 Ohio State fought off a brave Indiana team 34-27. #2 Michigan State withstood 14 points by Purdue in the 4th quarter to win 24-21. #3 Mississippi, as we saw in our comp, was crushed by #25 Florida 38-10. #6 Notre Dame fell to #12 Clemson on the road 24-22. #7 UCLA's loss has already been discussed. Finally, #8 Georgia continued their tradition of collapsing in big games with a 38-10 loss at home to #13 Alabama.

  • spoonless streaks:
    George95 .. no spoons since starting in 2011 (66 wks) + 5 weeks = 71
    Howie72 .. last spoon week 10 of 2011-12 (56 wks) + 5 weeks = 61

  • Two new faces grace the top of the leaderboard, although one has been there before. dg_dave hit every game but one (the massive Texas upset to be discussed later), earning him a spot in the HoF and a bonus point to tie him at the top with George95, who was previously in the lead in week 1. ozzz2002 was on the other side, picking several upsets (including Texas) but ended up getting a spoon even though he was in the running for potentially 5 more bonus points. This was also the wrong week to miss picking, as Sypher only notched 6 road teams.

  • For the first time this year, we have a clear demarcation between the top and bottom of the table. The top 5 tippers occupy the top 4 spots, with a 6-point difference between them and the #6 spot claimed by Dizart. The only member of the top 5 that hasn't been in the lead at some point is N-Bomb, but he is only 1 out of the lead and has been consistently rising week after week.

  • As mentioned above, Texas shocked the college football world by actually showing signs of life and taking down hated rival and 17-point favorite #10 Oklahoma by the score of 24-17. It was helped along by an Oklahoma fumble on a kickoff immediately following a Longhorn touchdown. Texas came out and scored again, going up 14-0 early on. From there, it became the defensive battle that Charlie Strong teams are known for, and they may just be a team to reckon with after all.

  • The matchup touted as the game of the week managed to both live up to the hype and fail to do so. Undefeateds #5 Utah and #23 California met up in the Beehive State to determine who should be at the top of the Pac-12. Golden Bears QB Jared Goff, touted as the best QB prospect in the upcoming NFL draft, was intercepted 5 times (not all his fault) but they were still in the game very late. Cal made it down to the Utah 21, but couldn't convert on a 4th and 5, resulting in the Utes remaining undefeated.

  • Outside of Oklahoma, the rest of the top 10 went perfect this week. #13 Northwestern was the next biggest team to go down, feeling the impact of the now resurgent #18 Michigan Wolverines to the tune of 38-0. Jim Harbaugh is in full effect at his alma mater, now at 5-1 on the year. #17 USC laid an egg on Thursday, going down to Washington under the tutelage of former Boise State coach Chris Petersen. #19 Georgia also continued their downfall after last week's devastating loss by losing to Tennessee this week, likely ending their time in the top 25.

  • spoonless streaks:
    George95 .. no spoons since starting in 2011 (66 wks) + 6 weeks = 72
    Howie72 .. last spoon week 10 of 2011-12 (56 wks) + 6 weeks = 62

  • Another week, another tipper at the top of the standings. George95 ends up in the first spot this week by hitting 12 games while dg_dave relinquished his #1 spot after only one week. Dizart and Sypher both pick up a win this week with 13/16, but only Sypher earned the near perfect bonus since Dizart only picked 1 upset this week. On the other end, wwe84 gets his first spoon and falls back into 5th, even with an underdog bonus point.

  • The game that earned the most bonus points this week was yet another 10-point underdog victory. #13 Mississippi had a 14-0 lead after less than 6 minutes, but then Memphis showed why they are considered one of the best non-power conference teams in the nation. The Tigers put together 31 points before Ole Miss was able to put together another scoring drive. Two more field goals and an interception on the final drive gave Memphis the 37-24 victory.

  • One of the most entertaining games of the day was the top-15 matchup to determine the best team in the state of Michigan. #12 Michigan broke the scoreless tie early in the 2nd quarter, followed by a #7 Michigan State touchdown. The first half was a little sleepy, ending with a 10-7 Wolverine lead. They lead by 10 for less than 2 minutes, when the Spartans closed to 17-14. By the middle of the 4th quarter, the resurgence of Michigan seemed a foregone conclusion, as they led 23-14 after 2 field goals. 29 seconds later, Michigan State answered with another touchdown, making it 23-21. Following failed offensive drives by both teams, the clock kept ticking down, and a missed 4th down opportunity by Michigan State with 2 minutes left appeared to end the game. With 10 seconds left, Michigan just had to bleed out the clock with a punt and maybe one final play. A low snap to the rugby-style punter led to a fumble, and he picked it up and tried to kick it sideways, but it went straight into a Spartan player mere feet away, and he returned it for a touchdown as time expired, keeping Michigan State undefeated 27-23.

  • On Friday, #21 Boise State went down 52-26 after committing 7 turnovers in the first half alone. #8 Florida lost their starting QB for the next calendar year for using performance-enhancing drugs, but still made it a competitive game as they fell to #6 LSU 35-28. #10 Alabama exorcised their demons and finally beat #9 Texas A&M in College Station to the tune of 41-23. #17 Iowa remained undefeated after knocking off division rival #20 Northwestern 40-10.

  • George95 maintains a 2-point lead on N-Bomb as both fall just shy of a near perfect bonus, but they have separated themselves as the top 2 as the rest of the field is at least 3 points back. illiniman14 did pick up the near perfect bonus and gets the weekly win, hitting 13 of the 16 games that at least 1 tipper got correct. That jumped him from 10th to 6th while the (now) bottom 3 were the only tippers to get in the single digits this week. ozzz2002 was one of those, and hit 7 picks (plus a solo bonus) to get a spoon this week.

  • For only the second time this year, none of our games included a 10-point underdog winning. #17 Oklahoma rolled by 36 points and Mississippi State won by 26. #8 Alabama was the only possibility this week. In between games against #15 Texas A&M and #5 LSU, a matchup against Tennessee was a classic trap game. The game featured little scoring, and Tennessee scored a touchdown with 5:49 left to make it 14-13 Volunteers. Alabama came back with a 71-yard touchdown drive and forced a fumble on the ensuing possession to win 19-14.

  • Do not adjust your monitor, we indeed had two different games go into four overtimes. #22 Duke and Virginia Tech were never more than a touchdown away from each other for all of regulation. Duke missed a 46-yard field goal with just over a minute left, leaving the game to overtime at 24-24. Matching field goals in the first overtime and matching touchdowns in the second left it at 34-34. For those unfamiliar with collegiate rules, both teams start at the 25 yard line in consecutive possessions in each overtime period, but beginning with the third overtime they cannot kick extra points, and instead must go for a 2-point conversion after touchdowns. That was a non-factor in the third overtime, as both teams kicked field goals again. Finally, Virginia Tech scored a touchdown in the fourth OT but failed to convert the 2-point conversion. Duke responded immediately with a touchdown on their first play, and a quarterback run on the conversion made it in the end zone, giving the Blue Devils a 45-43 victory.

  • The other game was just as exciting. Auburn never led in regulation against Arkansas, but hit a game-tying field goal as time expired to go into overtime, also at 24-24. They earned their first lead by scoring a touchdown in the first overtime, followed by an Arkansas TD on a 4th down with the game on the line. The Razorbacks wasted no time in scoring their next TD in the second OT, but Auburn responded in kind. Another Auburn TD in the third OT was followed by a 2-point conversion, but, undaunted, Arkansas converted yet another 4th down for a touchdown and made the 2-pointer to boot. Arkansas did exactly what Duke did in the 4th OT and scored on their first play and converted the 2-pointer, giving them a 54-46 lead. Perhaps too fatigued, Auburn failed to gain more than a yard on their next possession, giving Arkansas the win.

  • However, neither of those was the most spectacular ending to a game this week. #9 Florida State and Georgia Tech played what was by all accounts an ugly game. They managed just over 600 yards combined, and with just under a minute left, Georgia Tech hit a field goal to tie the game at 16-16. Florida State put together a solid drive over the next 48 seconds and set up for a 54-yard field goal attempt. Fresh off the heels of Michigan State's impossible win last week, perhaps the Seminoles should've played for overtime. Georgia Tech blocked the kick, and while some players celebrated, Lance Austin picked it up and gained several blockers as he reversed the field, avoided two Florida State players, and went into the end zone as time expired for a 78-yard blocked field goal return for a touchdown, earning the Yellow Jackets a 22-16 victory.

  • N-Bomb and gillyharold both snag a win this week while also picking up a near perfect bonus point, and the former joins George95 at the top of the standings 6 points clear of the rest of the field. With N-Bomb in the top spot, this means half the field has now at some point been at least tied for the lead. The next 7 points separate 3rd from 10th, with that spot now owned by wwe84 following his second spoon of the comp, his new low for the season.

  • George95 has now hit 75 consecutive weeks without a spoon, as he has never earned one since this comp started in 2011. He is now in third place across all comps ever having just surpassed... illiniman14? What's the big idea?!

  • The last 2 weeks have given us many amazing endings of big games. The 'Fail to the Victors' gave Michigan State a shocking win. A not-nicknamed returned blocked field goal gave Georgia Tech a win as time expired. This week the ACC gave us another incredible finish, as #22 Duke scored a touchdown and 2-point conversion to go up 27-24 on Miami (FL) with 6 seconds left. On the kickoff, Miami lateraled the ball 8 times on their way to scoring a miraculous touchdown to win 30-27...or so we thought. Replay clearly showed a Miami player's knee was down before lateraling the ball, so Duke wins... or so we thought. The officials came out and announced incredulously that no Miami players were down by contact, so the game was over... or so we thought. They then announced the play was still under review, when it was shown Miami had clearly made an illegal block in the back on the return, which would result in an untimed down. The officials came back and announced no penalty, so the game was over with Miami winning 30-27. Those referees have been suspended for 2 games after the ACC announced that Duke should have won if not for a plethora of errors by the referees and replay officials. That result kept George95, Dizart, and Howie72 all from getting a near perfect bonus point.

  • For the second week in a row, no 10-point underdogs won this week, although previously-undefeated #21 Temple made it very close at home against #9 Notre Dame. The Irish scored a touchdown with just over a minute left to squeak by at 24-20. Washington State made things very uncomfortable for #8 Stanford as well, with the Cardinal notching a field goal with just under 2 minutes left to get by 30-28.

  • The only other top-25 loss not previously mentioned was North Carolina taking down #23 Pittsburgh on Thursday 26-19. All teams in the top 20 either won or did not play. The first CFP rankings come out on Tuesday, and that top 25 will be used the rest of the year for our rankings.

  • spoonless streaks:
    George95 .. no spoons since starting in 2011 (66 wks) + 9 weeks = 75
    Howie72 .. last spoon week 10 of 2011-12 (56 wks) + 9 weeks = 65

  • N-Bomb gets his 3rd weekly win (shared with Sypher), leading in that respect, and takes over the lead alone as well. George95 had at least a share of the lead for the previous 4 weeks, but is now a point back in the standings. Those two have an 8-point advantage over the rest of the field and it would take a monumental upset for anyone else to take the gold.

  • In the race for 3rd, there are 8 tippers within 5 points of the bronze spot. dg_dave has been in third since losing his share of the lead 4 weeks ago. He's been 1 point better than ElfTwinkle that whole time, while the rest shuffle about. This week wwe84 made the biggest move as he ended up getting more points than anyone else with 2 bonus points and goes from 10th to 6th.

  • The last 3 weeks have all given us crazy finishes, so why should this week be any different? Arkansas and #18 Mississippi played one of the most even games that has ever been played. They were tied at 7, 14, 17, 24, 31, 38, and 45 after Arkansas scored with 53 seconds left in the game. Mississippi only took 3 plays to score a touchdown in overtime. Arkansas suffered a delay of game and a 10-yard sack leaving them with a 4th-and-25 to keep the game going. A pass was completed for about half that distance, and the receiver hurled it back towards the line of scrimmage in an attempt to keep the play alive. Normally, fumbles on 4th downs in college football are ruled dead on the spot of the fumble, but a backwards pass or lateral is not considered a 'fumble' for those purposes, so the play was still alive. It was picked up by the Arkansas running back, who then ran to the opposite side and got the first down. The Razorbacks scored a touchdown 2 plays later, and tired of being tied, went for 2 in the first overtime, when they didn't have to. The run in gave Arkansas the win 53-52.

  • The shocking upset of the day was struggling Nebraska, who found themselves down 12 with 4:16 left in the game against #7 Michigan State. They scored a touchdown with less than 2 minutes left and forced a 3-and-out to get the ball back with 55 seconds left. A 30-yard TD pass on a controversial call where the wide receiver went out of bounds before catching the ball but it was determined the defender pushed him out gave them the 39-38 lead they would take to the bank.

  • It was a rough day for much of the rest of the top 25. #2 LSU was the top team to fall as they took a trip to Tuscaloosa and got thoroughly beaten by #4 Alabama 30-16. #8 TCU was completely dominated by #14 Oklahoma State 49-29 as the latter moved to 9-0. Previously-undefeated #13 Memphis was likewise dominated by Navy 45-20. Finally, Auburn remembered how to play football again and took down #19 Texas A&M 26-10.

  • spoonless streaks:
    George95 .. no spoons since starting in 2011 (66 wks) + 10 weeks = 76
    Howie72 .. last spoon week 10 of 2011-12 (56 wks) + 10 weeks = 66

  • dg_dave opens up a 2-point lead for 3rd place as he picks up a weekly win, tied in that regard with gtho4. N-Bomb maintains his lead as he and George95 continue to fight it out for the top spot. George95 and Howie72 continue their very long spoonless streaks.

  • The game of the week was between two heavyweights outside of the Power 5 conferences. #21 Memphis went to #24 Houston for a top matchup of what has clearly become the #6 conference (at worst) in the nation - the AAC. Memphis appeared well on their way to a rout, going up 20-0 late in the second half. Houston was able to get a quick touchdown drive before the half ended. Memphis went back up 20 late in the 3rd quarter 34-14, and Houston got rolling. They immediately scored a touchdown, then forced 2 turnovers, one of them leading to another touchdown. A 3-and-out gave them the ball with under 4 minutes to go, and with 1:27 left Houston found themselves with a 35-34 lead. In a last gasp effort, Memphis went as far as they could and attempted a 48-yard field goal with 19 seconds left, but it went wide right and kept Houston undefeated... for now.

  • Several in the top 25 fell this week: #2 Alabama rolled over #17 Mississippi State 31-6; #6 Baylor finally felt the sting of losing their starting QB by falling to #12 Oklahoma 44-34; #7 Stanford shockingly lost to Oregon at home 38-36; #9 LSU clearly still had a hangover from their Alabama loss last week and fell again to Arkansas 31-14 at home; #19 UCLA also lost at home, 31-27 to Washington State; and #22 Temple suffered a bad loss to South Florida. #14 Michigan almost joined that group, having to go to 2 overtimes against Indiana, but they prevailed 48-41.

  • spoonless streaks:
    George95 .. no spoons since starting in 2011 (66 wks) + 11 weeks = 77
    Howie72 .. last spoon week 10 of 2011-12 (56 wks) + 11 weeks = 67

  • N-Bomb opens up his first lead of more than 1 point over the rest of the field as George95 falls back. This also starts to open up 2nd place to a hungry pack of 4 tippers all within 7 points of the silver spot (and 2 points separate those 4), but dg_dave in 3rd still sits 5 points back. gtho4 and Sypher both nab the weekly win, but gillyharold is the big mover up this week, hitting 11 picks and getting 2 bonus points with an upset pick which he shared with only wwe84. The big mover the other way was illiniman14, hitting only 6 picks for the 2nd time, and those serving as both of his spoons.

  • Six upsets littered the field this week (although 7 counted as upsets with 1 pick 'em game). Two of those were at least 10-point underdogs. #20 Northwestern put up an impressive defensive stand against #25 Wisconsin on the road and won 13-7 despite being 10.5-point underdogs. Elsewhere in the Big Ten, the defending national champions #3 Ohio State welcomed in #9 Michigan State as a 13-point favorite. Ezekiel Elliott only ran the ball 12 times for 33 yards (his previous low this year was 101), and he was quite vocal about his displeasure after the game. Both Ohio State touchdowns were immediately answered by the Spartans, and at the end of the game a 41-yard field goal put Michigan State up for good 17-14.

  • The game of the week was somewhat of a surprise, since #18 TCU lost their starting quarterback for the matchup against #7 Oklahoma. With 9:13 left in the 4th quarter, Oklahoma led 30-13, and it seemed as if it would be an easy rout. However, the TCU 3rd-string QB (the 2nd string started the game and threw 3 interceptions) threw an 86-yard touchdown pass to make it 30-20 in one play. Three plays later TCU intercepted the ball and made a field goal on the ensuing drive, making it 30-23. After forcing another punt, the Horned Frogs drove down the field again, scoring a touchdown with 51 seconds left to make it 30-29. Not wanting to face overtime on the road, TCU went for 2 and the win, but the pass was knocked away, giving the Sooners a much-needed victory.

  • That victory pushed Oklahoma up to #3 in the College Football Playoff Ranking, followed by a still-undefeated Iowa at #4 and Michigan State at #5. If the top 5 teams win out, they will be in the final 4 for the College Football Playoff (Iowa and Michigan State would have to play each other in the Big Ten Championship Game, so they can't all win out).

  • The Big 12 did end up giving us an upset, as #10 Baylor, who also lost their starting QB, ran it up early on #6 Oklahoma State and won 45-35. #8 Florida, another team who lost their starting QB (although this to PEDs and not injury), went to overtime with 2-8 Florida Atlantic but emerged victorious 20-14. #13 Utah fell in a conference home game to UCLA 17-9. #15 LSU has fallen flat after their loss to Alabama and has now lost their 3rd straight game, this time to #22 Mississippi 38-17, and their coach might be on the way out according to recent reports. It was also a tough week for the AAC, as previously-undefeated #19 Houston fell to Connecticut, who now becomes bowl-eligible, 20-17 on the road, and #21 Memphis had their potent offense completely shut down by previously-ranked Temple 31-12. #24 USC also fell badly to a newly-revitalized #24 Oregon 48-28.

  • There are 3 weeks left, but N-Bomb did his best to sew up the gold with a weekly win and bonus point, earning a 6-point push over George95 this week alone. Meanwhile, the silver medal spot has opened up a bit, but George95 is still 3 points clear of 3rd place. Three tippers are all also within 1 point of 3rd, while a few others hold an outside hope within 5 points. Sypher is one of those thanks to his HoF performance as well.

  • Rivalry week was no disappointment (unless your team lost). The best of those games featured an historical rivalry rather than a geographic one, with #6 Notre Dame heading to California to face #9 Stanford with plenty of playoff implications on the line. The first 4 possessions showed what kind of game we would have: Stanford put together a long drive for a touchdown, Notre Dame answered with a kickoff return touchdown, Stanford retaliated with another long touchdown drive, and Notre Dame followed up with a field goal. At halftime, it stood 21-20 Stanford. The Fighting Irish grabbed their first lead on their opening drive of the 2nd half, the Cardinal answered with a touchdown, matched by the Irish once more (and a failed 2-point conversion), and another Stanford touchdown. It cooled down after that until Notre Dame put together a grinding 15-play, 88-yard touchdown drive to go up 36-35 with 30 seconds left. Undeterred, Stanford got a penalty and a long pass to put them within field goal range, and drove it home to win 38-36 heading into the Pac-12 Championship Game.

  • A conference with no championship game featured 2 of the top 10 offenses in the country with #7 Baylor visiting #19 TCU. Both average over 40 points per game (Baylor over 50!). The first 3 drives of the game went as expected: Baylor touchdown, TCU touchdown, Baylor touchdown. Then... nothing. TCU scored again on a fumble return in the 2nd quarter, but the two high-powered offenses (albeit hurt by injury) played a scoreless 2nd half to send them to overtime. There, the offenses woke back up. The Bears scored to open overtime; followed by TCU scoring in overtime and double overtime. But then Baylor couldn't convert a first down, and TCU won 28-21.

  • #3 Oklahoma was supposed to be in a dogfight with #11 Oklahoma State for the Big 12 title, but it ended up being somewhat of a laugher. A 30-point 2nd quarter put the Sooners up by enough to seal the game at halftime and it ended 58-23. #8 Ohio State was in the same boat against #10 Michigan. Although close at halftime (14-10), Michigan only scored 3 in the 2nd half as the Buckeyes rolled 42-13. #13 Florida State joined them as they completely destroyed SEC East Champion #12 Florida 27-2.

  • The playoff picture is becoming clearer, but could be thrown into complete chaos this week. #1 Clemson is 1 of 2 undefeated teams in the country but they play #10 North Carolina in the ACC Championship Game with the Tarheels having won their last 11 games. #2 Alabama seems like a lock to win over a Florida team that looked hapless last week. #3 Oklahoma finished their season at 11-1 without a conference championship game to look forward to. The fourth spot is currently held by #4 Iowa (the other undefeated team in the country), but they play #5 Michigan State in the Big Ten Championship game, so the winner will most likely head into the playoffs.
