US Open 2015The final Grand Slam tennis tournament of 2014 starts Monday, August 31!Serena Williams is chasing history after winning all the three earlier Slams this year. Marin Cilic will be more than happy if he can defend his sole Grand Slam title. In our comps, Dizart would probably want to avoid his own "Spoon Slam" in the women's section after finishing dead last in all 3 slams this year! srini701 (women's section) and BxBarracuda (men's section) are the defending title holders here. - This world has a funny way of coming back to bite you when you least expect it! Poor Serena Williams found it the real hard way, of all the places, in the semi-finals of the US Open....2 matches away from completing a calendar Grand Slam, a feat achieved in the history of the game by ONLY 3 women, the last of which was in 1988, by a certain Fraulein Forehand...Serena usually fumbles only the early stages of a slam (55-4 in her entire career towards the business end of a slam!), all the major players out of the way, and standing across the net, an opponent who had never won more than 4 games against her in a set in 13 previous matches, and who was a 300-1 outsider coming into the match!! Heck, the whole world thought Serena had this in the bag!
- Except that Roberta Vinci, a player ranked 43 in the world, had nothing to lose and went in swinging and slicing her wicked back hand shots...she just refused to believe she was only making up the numbers and played about the biggest party pooper of the year!
- After that semifinal, the final was always going to be a let down, even if it was the first-ever "all-Italian" final in a women's Slam...even if the 2 opponents were aged 32 and 34, and ranked 26 and 43 (the lowest ranked finalists in any slam by a long shot)...and even if the winner was to announce her retirement from the game minutes after winning the title!
- srini701 rode the Flavia Pennetta bandwagon all the way to the title here, retaining the title won he won in 2014, in some style...after all, Pennetta had reached the quarters of the US Open 5 times in the last 6 years, a feat everybody else here overlooked
  - N-Bomb (who actually picked Vinci to make it to the last 8
 ) also retained his second spot, ahead of illiniman14 but probably our biggest news here should have been Dizart....he was in line for the "wooden spoon slam" for 2015 in the women's section after finishing dead last in all 3 previous slams...could have been a record too, but like Serena Williams, he wilted, and finished a respected mid-table here....wwe84 took home the spoon honors with only 3 right picks (of 2 players) - The men's results follow in a day...

- Winner, runner-up, winner and now, winner again....That's Novak Djokovic's Grand Slam report for 2015! And to think he was flying under the radar for a good part of two weeks despite having such a stellar year...this world was crazy to just focus on Serena Williams or be swayed by Federer's magic, I say
 - Can Roger Federer sign off with one final slam? poor gtho4 thought he could the whole year, and the way Federer was playing (just beeeauuutifully), it did seem he could do a "Sampras of 2002"....alas, the Djoker stopped him first in London, and now again in New York, both times in 4 sets...Will we see an encore in Melbourne in January 2016? Let's see...
- Not many of us gave credit to the defending champion from last year, Marin Cilic....N-Bomb did, picking him to go all the way to the semis, and his faith paid off...N-Bomb lands the men's title here in our comp by a mere 3 points from Howie72, to cap a fine US Open 2015 for himself (silver in women's and gold now)...srini701 had a decent time too, taking out the bronze ahead of paper_aero.
- The 3 Aussies in our field brought home the rear, with ozzz2002 taking the spoon in a very tight contest...
- Thank you all for another fine year of Grand Slam tennis...hoping to see you all (and maybe a few new faces as well) in January 2016 for the Australian Open again...
