The ten matches in the final qualifying round (aka the play-off round) were completed during the week. The 10 winners will join the 22 teams who were exempt until the group phase. The draw for the group phase took place yesterday. If you've got a few hours to kill and/or have an insomnia attack and can't hit the sack, you can read the complete details of the qualifying rounds and the exemption procedures here : Regulations of the UEFA Champions League 2015-16. Most of the 32 teams in this year's comp are familiar names, but there maybe a few qualifiers whose team names will be alien to most of us (see next post).
The group stage commences on Tuesday 15th September (the first round of the tipping comp), and 19 rounds later the Champions League Final will be played, after 8½ months, on Saturday 28th May 2016 at the San Siro in Milan, Germany. There's a two month mid-winter break, for all of us to grab some R&R, between the last round of the group phase on Tuesday 8th December and the start of the KO Round on Tuesday 16th February 2016. |
Rules: they're the same as last year, and the year before. The rules for this comp are simple: points
default
full-time
upsets
perfect picks
other bonus pts
dead-heats | one point for each correct pick.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours (ineligible for bonus pts),
however, you receive the WS score if it's more than the aways.
picks are H-x-A at full-time; extra time and shootout lotteries are ignored.
if you pick a game solo, you score a bonus point ... or 1 of 2 if we have 12
or more runners, 1 of 3 if we have 18 or more runners.
8/8 scores a bonus point. You also receive a knighthood from Her Majesty.
no one picks a win, whoever picks a draw.
no one picks a draw, whoever picks the upset win.
if you pick all home teams (or all bar one), you're ineligible for bonus pts.
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes;
if they're identical, bonus points will be used. |
Deadline: is always kick-off in the first game of the round. Please don't wait until the death, as this year's comp will be spread across seven time zones as FC Astana from Kazakhstan has qualified, for the group stage, for the first time (see next post), and there's a good chance you'll get it wrong! If you post your tips 6 hours before the scheduled kick-off time for games in the UK, you should be safe. We have had multiple winners of this comp, but no-one has won it back-to-back to successfully defend their UEFA title .. Dizart won it last year from gtho4. When the defending titleholders fail to qualify through their domestic league, the EL winner is placed in the play-off

. Last year's comp saw everyone from the year before back for another dose except for KrivoyRog. We had two new recruits, Lpez and acilarincocugu, which made it a field of 17 runners (up one from the previous year's 16 runners).
This year we have four no-shows and three newbies giving us a field of 16 runners for this year's Champions League tipping comp. The four no-shows are: acilarincocugu, BxBarracuda, Lpez and LeoDaVinci. The three newbies are: KrivoyRog (back after missing one season), ElfTwinkle (back after five seasons away) and toocool4u. Welcome aboard or welcome back, as the case may be!
Week 1 of 19 saw two of the eight games picked by everyone and two games were upset wins picked by no-one (and there were no draws). Eight of us scored a weekly win with picks of 6/8 (that's almost half the field).
ElfTwinkle scored a bonus point with *both* of her other two picks, which were draws (no-one picked the two upset wins), to jump to an early lead. At the other end, ozzz2002 collected the first wooden spoon on offer with picks of 2/8. His two were the two games picked by everyone.
The two upset wins yielded 11 bonus points for those of us who picked a draw. As noted in the previous paragraph, ElfTwinkle collected two of them!
The next round starts in a few hours. Let's see how many of those eight games end up in an upset win and ruin our picks. |

. The field has increased to 17 runners. LeoDaVinci missed Round One but is back for another dose.
We had four weekly winners with 5/8, five spoons with 3/8 and the rest of us all scored 4/8. We now have the first 10 runners separated by a mere 2 points. The rest of the field is separated by 3 pts.
There were three upsets in Round 2, hence the 5/8 weekly win score. Barcelona were held to a draw by AS Roma. All of us went for the Barca win, except one .. illiniman14 went for a draw and collected a bonus point for that effort. Check out the goal scored by AS Roma .. it could be the goal of the season.
ozzz2002 was the only person to pick the Arsenal loss away to Zagreb .. dg_dave & KrivoyRog picked Valencia to lose at home!

. As was the case in the previous round, the weekly winners again scored 5/8 and the wooden spooner again scored 3/8. We had four winners and four spoons .. and the rest of us all scored 4/8.
There were again three upsets, hence the 5/8 weekly win score. AS Roma lost away. All of us went for the AS Roma win, except one .. dg_dave went for a draw and collected a bonus point for that effort. Arsenal lost at home; all of us picked Arsenal to win except two who went for a draw and collected a bonus point .. ElfTwinkle and KrivoyRog. . For the previous two rounds, a total of 5 pts covered the entire field apart from LeoDaVinci. This week it's a spread of 7 points across the entire field apart from LeoDaVinci, who's still bringing up the rear but slowly clawing back the deficit. He reduced the gap to the rest of the field from 5 pts to 4 pts.

ozzz2002 and gtho4 are this round's winners with 6/12 .. it was the first win of the season for ozzz2002 (which leaves wwe84 & LeoDaVinci as the only players without a weekly win).
