Rugby World CupThe 2015 Rugby World Cup starts in a fortnight's time, on Friday 18th September. New Zealand are the defending champions. This is the 8th iRB World Cup and, over the last 28 years, all finalists and winners have come from the top four rugby nations. The winners of the first seven finals were: 1987 : 23-9 : New Zealand v France
1991 : 12-6 : Australia v England
1995 : 15-12: South Africa v New Zealand (aet)
1999 : 35-12: Australia v France
2003 : 20-17: England v Australia (aet)
2007 : 15-6 : South Africa v England

There will be 8 rounds in the tipping comp with 8 pts each round. The comp will run for 7 weeks with one round each weekend, except for the 2nd round which will be mid-week (see list of tipping threads in post below). Advance picks will be lodged in Round 1 for the four semi-finalists, and in Round 2 for the two finalists and the winner. The rules are the same as those used for the Super XV tipping comp: points

Oh wow! and they have a website too! Thanks, Howie...first thing is WHY are they playing this in India? Oh well...maybe by 2050 we will qualify for this World Cup also then (even if it is by "invitation" then)

A field of 16 runners lined up ay the barriers for the start of the 4th edition of the iRB World Cup tipping comp .. 11 have played in a previous edition and two of those 11 have played in all four (see table below at bottom right). The five first-timers are: dg_dave, Dizart, illiniman14, PaulE and wwe84. Welcome aboard!
In the first round of the 2011 comp we lodged 112 picks, and 108 of them were correct for a strike rate of 96.4% .. ten had perfect picks of 8/8 & the remaining four collected a wooden spoon each for one error at 7/8! This time we had two upsets, which gave us a strike rate of 71.1%, 11 winners with 6/8 and five wooden spoons with 5/8.
One of those upsets was picked by no-one .. South Africa lost to Japan, which is probably the biggest shock in the history of the Rugby World Cup, all the way back to the first one in 1986. Two players picked the upset win by Georgia over Samoa for a bonus point .. dg_dave and wwe84. They're the two leaders at the end of the first round, a point in front of the other 9 winners. The five wooden spooners are a further point in arrears.
The 28 semi-finalists over the first seven World Cups were:

Eleven of us have chosen South Africa as one of our advance picks for the four semi-finalists (see table below at bottom left). If they repeat their performance against Japan they will miss the semis (they won the World Cup in 1995 & 2007 and came 3rd in 1999). There should be another upset or two along the way (the favourites can't win everything), and the podium finishers should be the ones who went for an upset that paid off. All will be revealed over the next six weeks. |

Watched 2 matches this weekend...first time seeing a rugby match "live" for me...crazy and funny game, but Scotland-Samoa match was so very different to the Australia-Wales match! Liked the resilience of the Aussies where they held the Welsh guys up 1-2 meters from the touch down line for so long in the second half! But tell me one thing...teams are scoring 5 points for touch down (or try)...why penalise the opponents another 2 points by giving a free kick to the team scoring a try? Its tough as it is to score points...why extra punishment (I wouldn't call it incentive to team scoring the try  )

There are no teams from the northern hemisphere in the semi-finals of the Rugby World Cup. This is a first.
Until this weekend, Australia had lost every world cup game in which they behind at half-time. They were behind 15-16 at half-time against Scotland (at one stage they were 5-13 behind). The score was 32-34 with a minute or so to go when Scotland were penalised for a dubious-looking offside at a line-out. Australia kicked the goal between the posts for 3 pts .. and the referee bolted from the field when the full-time siren rang. No-one picked the result at half-time.
South Africa also came from behind at half-time .. 7 of 15 players picked that one. Three of those seven also had South Africa behind at full-time which, umm, didn't happen.
For the first time we have just one weekly winner .. paper_aero won the round with picks of 7/8. He picked the lot except for the half-time result Australia v Scotland.
Everyone in the first five scored 4/8 except for srini701. He's the new leader.

The final will be played next weekend between Australia and New Zealand. Whoever wins will be the first nation to win the World Cup three times. This is the first time in the 28-year history of the World Cup that the All Blacks and Wallabies will face off in the final. As has been the case in all previous seven tournaments, this year's finalists again come from the top four rugby nations. The winners of the first seven finals were:1987 : 23-9 : New Zealand v France

2011 : 8-7 : New Zealand v France Once again we had just one weekly winner. Davjack scored 7/8 with just one miss .. picking Argentina as a semi-finalist with his advance picks. In other words, this ex-pat picked his own country (yes, he's a Kiwi) behind at half-time.
Dizart is now back in the lead, aka we've now had a lead change for the 4th straight round .. and, apart from the four tail-enders, no-one kept their spot from the previous round.
