Indian Domestic Cricket: Ranji Trophy 2015...1 October - 1 December 2015

Hello All! I would like to invite you to a brand new tipping competition. We hardly have any cricket comps here, so I thought I would take a stab at one.

Will try to keep it as simple and straight-forward as possible, so you can get your crystal balls, magic mirrors, or dart boards working cool

27 teams play in 3 groups for the Ranji Trophy, the premier Indian domestic cricket championships. League matches are of 4 days each, and each round is held exactly a week apart (so we are looking at 9 rounds of 12 matches each in 3 months). The top 3 from Groups A and B and top 2 from Group C move to the knock-out stages, but our comp here will only cover the league stages.

Teams are awarded points for a win or draw (sometimes for loss too) each match, so here we get to just pick teams and score as many points in the round as the teams do.

If you are interested in a quick background of last year's Ranji Trophy, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014-15_Ranji_Trophy should give you enough information. Even otherwise, Karnataka has been winning the trophy the last 2 years running, while other "strong" domestic teams include Mumbai, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Baroda.

Please sign up here or let me know you'd be interested or not (or need more information too). We will have a competition only if a minimum of 8-9 people sign up.

Hoping to see some enthusiasm (only coz it's a brand new comp, if nothing else grin )

A big WELCOME to the 9 of you who agreed to venture out into the unknown!! A special "welcome back" to former tipping comp superstar ElfTwinkle, who is returning after a rather long hiatus from the site smile The Ranji Trophy is India's Domestic Cricket Championship, played by 27 teams in a league and knock-out format. We cover all the league matches played over 9 rounds in 3 months in our comp here. Simple, easy to understand format, with us scoring as many points as the teams we pick do (no sole picks, no upset bonus).

Typically Home teams call the shots in a longer duration game, and so it was in most matches this round. Assam surprised 2-time defending champions Karnataka, taking the lead in the first innings, and then holding out on the final day. Andhra got the lead against a strong Mumbai for the first time ever, Goa made Hyderabad look silly, while Saurashtra and Tamil Nadu won on tailor-made wickets....Some visiting teams "surprised" their hosts too, with Kerala almost winning against J&K. Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh could not complete one innings each after 4 full days and settled for a point each.

We are all pretty bunched up after round 1. paper_aero and illiniman went for Andhra, wwe84 and ozzz picked Assam, while srini and wwe's picks of Services paid off handsomely for them. By the same token, George95's picks of Tripura, and wwe's picks of Baroda and Railways boomeranged (Helpful note: Tripura and Goa are supposed to be the "weakest" of the 27 teams in the League....but please don't hold me for that smile )

The second round matches start this Thursday, so please get your picks in by then....any newcomer (dg_dave "promised" to join frown smilee ) starts not too far behind!

A BIG welcome to dg_dave who joined us in round 2, taking the participants into double digits! Yayy!!

Home teams dominated this round, with 8 of them either winning or taking the first innings points against their opponents. Railways and Jharkhand lost outright for the second round in a row, Saurashtra won a second match in a row (both at home), Punjab won the first match and then got thrashed in the second (against Mumbai). Newly-promoted Assam lead Group A after a massive win this round while the other promoted team Andhra took the first innings points in both their matches so far! (2 teams from Group C get promoted to the Elite Groups A and B each year and 2 bottom placed teams move from Elite to the Plate Group).

srini701 won a second HoF here to open up a small lead at the top, but 6 players are bunched up together after that. wwe84 takes the round's spoon to take over the "Lantern Rouge" role from George95.

The third round matches start this Thursday (October 15), so please try and get your picks in before the matches start....

The Ranji Trophy is beginning to open up with there being 7 decisive matches this round. Not all home teams dominated too, with 4 away teams winning this round!

paper_aero was the ONLY one here to pick wins for both Railways and Jharkhand ( confused ) but he also failed to pick Goa and Services...None of us picked the Assam loss while all of us went for the Delhi win.

Our table is beginning to spread out, and one-thirds into the competition, we have a clear 1 to 10 ranking on the ladder. ElfTwinkle and srini701 take the round's honours while illiniman14 takes his first spoon.

The fourth round matches start this Thursday (October 22), but I am travelling the next week and results may be delayed coming up.

There were 8 outright results this round, with 5 visiting teams winning...Outright results means lot more points to score, and we did much better on the scores front as a group. Every single match had at least one or two of us scoring the max available points for the first time (with all of us getting the 7 on offer for the HP-Tripura match and only dg_dave missing the 6 from the TN-Railways match).

Uttar Pradesh have now won 2 back to back matches, defending champions Karnataka have finally won one match outright, Andhra is beginning to lose steam on the road and has lost for the second time in a row, Saurashtra keeps winning outright in Group C, Tamil Nadu had another fine win and Delhi stays ahead in its group.

gtho4 and ozzz2002 broke the run of srini701 in the HoF table, while Howie72 decided to enter the spoon column for a change this round.

I goofed up in the fixtures list, missing the J&K-Hyderabad match and putting a next round fixture instead...this meant only 11 matches to score from frown

The sixth round matches start this Saturday (November 7).

There were another 6 outright results this round which meant more high scores...2 matches ended with first innings also not completed (teams sharing a point each). Delhi and Karnataka won again and are set to reach the knock-out quarterfinals. Assam surprised Haryana on road, Gujarat thrashed their neighbors Baroda, Madhya Pradesh easily beat Railways, while Bengal won for the first time this year, against Vidarbha. Himachal Pradesh and Services couldn't complete even one innings over four days, while rain curtailed the Tamil Nadu-Andhra tie.

All of us got the match results of Delhi and Karnataka correct here. gtho4 and Howie72 had a near perfect round, missing only the Bengal-Vidarbha result. But ozzz2002 takes the cake this round, missing only 4 points off the max possible this round. srini701 and ElfTwinkle find themselves sharing the spoon, and this means we have a new leader at the top of the ladder! gtho4, with a whopping 92 in the last two rounds, takes over the front running duties.

The seventh round matches start this Sunday (November 15).

There were another 7 outright results of the 12 matches this round....this year is fast becoming one of the best in the Indian First Class cricket season in terms of results! Assam shocked strong Delhi in the biggest upset of the round. Baroda thrashed Punjab by an innings, a result nobody expected. Railways, languishing at the bottom of their group and staring at possible relegation, had to be positive and set a decent target for Mumbai, only to see it being overhauled! There were big wins for Kerala and Jharkhand as well, while Gujarat and Vidarbha got a huge boost in their push for a quarterfinal place with turn-around victories.

paper_aero picked up his first HoF here and is now in podium position, as ozzz2002 took the spoon and slipped back....gtho4 and srini701 again swapped positions at the top. With 2 rounds left in the comp, the podium should comprise of 3 of these 4, with ElfTwinkle, illiniman14 and Howie72 having an outside shot at an upset.

The eighth round matches start next Monday (November 23).

Another suspense-filled round with half the matches producing outright results! but I goofed a second time, including a fixture that was already played in round 6 (Bengal vs Vidarbha), so we have a round of only 11 matches to score from.

Railways won against Andhra to keep alive their hopes of staying in the elite group....Andhra must now either win or take the first-innings lead against MP in their last match to avoid relegation to group C. Rajasthan won for the first time this season and now Haryana is struggling to avoid relegation in group A. Jharkhand and Kerala both won against the group leaders to leave group C wide open (only top 2 progress from group C to quarterfinals and promotion to elite groups next year)....Saurashtra and Himachal Pradesh have slipped in the last 2 rounds and there's also Services in the mix still there. Delhi finished their engagements, but Assam and Bengal are both in the running for a quarterfinal place and they play each other next. Defending champions Karnataka also has to either take the lead, or win their last match to progress. Mumbai is assured of a quarterfinal place in group B, but the other 2 places are still wide open, with Gujarat, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh all having a chance. Promises to be a cracker of a final round from December 1!

dg_dave was on a different plane altogether from the rest of the field here this round! While we were all struggling consistently as a group, he picked the lot, missing only 2 matches this round shocked At the top, paper_aero pulled to within 4 points of srini701, and its once again an open race for the top spot going into the final round!

The last round matches start next Tuesday (December 1) with everything to play for, both for us here and for many teams on the field!.

2-time champions Karnataka failed to make it to the quarters this time after being beaten outright by Maharashtra....That defeat also ended a three year unbeaten streak for Karnataka that spanned 37 first-class matches. In a thrilling last round that decided some of the qualifiers for the last eight in the very last hour, 9 matches produced outright results...Himachal Pradesh won against Kerala, but made a mess of their target of 24, losing 4 wickets (a win by 10 wickets gets a bonus point)...then Jharkhand thrashed Hyderabad and moved into the quarters after lagging for over 5 rounds! Punjab beat Tamil Nadu in 2 days and they advanced as well. Madhya Pradesh thrashed Andhra by an innings for a bonus point win and tied with Gujarat on total points. MP advanced on a better net run-rate...Vidarbha also beat Haryana by an innings to top their group out of nowhere...There were also last round wins for Services and Rajasthan, though it meant little for them...

It was a most entertaining season of aggressive first-class cricket after a long time and proved one or two rounds of flash results do not matter...consistency, with some aggression mixed with it is what mattered at the end. Some of the more fancied teams like Delhi, Baroda, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh (and of course Karnakata) all got knocked out after the league stage itself, and we have unfancied Assam, Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand in the last 8 along with Mumbai, Punjab, Saurashtra, and Bengal.

srini701 won the inaugural comp here and a little knowledge of the home conditions did help him there.paper_aero had the right mix of consistency all through the 9 rounds and he landed a well-deserved silver there. But the biggest surprise of our entire comp has got to be dg_dave....much like some of the teams on the field, he was nowhere in the running for a medal as late as round 7 too. Then we all had a collective bad round 8 while he went off on a tangent. That gave him an outside chance going into round 9. gtho4 and ozzz2002 both imploded in the last round, allowing Dave to race past them both to land the final podium position by a small margin smilee George95 had a spectacular last round, missing only 2 matches but he probably would have wished for some more consistency in his showing wink illiniman14, Howie72 and ElfTwinkle were all middle of the table all along while wwe84 began to come to grips with the whole comp only towards the very end. gtho4 and ozzz2002 were the ones doing all the yo-yoing this year. gtho4 actually led the table midway through the table crazy before he decided he did not want a medal. Hoping everybody will return for a second chance next year and that we can have a great, close comp in 2016 too...

This was the first running of the comp, so a REAL BIG THANK YOU to all again for taking part and lasting all the rounds enthusiastically. Any feedback and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Hoping to have a second comp in this event in 2016...

Great work, Srini! Your write ups are terrific.

Also great work in winning the thing, and congrats to Paper_aero and our American cricket aficionado!

I'll be back for the next one.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Thanks srini for running the comp and congratulations for winning. I don't understand anything about this competition and the rules but if it's held next year, I'll be back.
