World Cricket - 2015-16: November 5, 2015 to February 24, 2016

This will be the 12th edition of World Cricket...

Nobody has managed to retain their title in the 11 editions this comp has been run! confused .... N-Bomb is the defending champion with a massive spoon-less streak stretching back more than 5 years in the comp!!! 4 others are building up smaller streaks of their own, but they are miles off N-Bomb.

We will see 7 of the 10 Test teams in our comp over the next 4 months! 15 rounds till end of February, with more Test matches than ODIs this season.

You will as usual pick 5 players for Test matches and 6 (or more) for ODI series from the list of players I will provide and score as many points as the runs/wickets by your selected player. A carefully chosen Trump player can double your points and boost your scores considerably. If you are not a regular visitor to the forums here, you can still lodge a team at the beginning of a series and allow it to score for you till a new series comes about.

Most threads won't be up till a few days before a match/series and the comp may also involve some unannounced series and some big rounds in between (where 2 matches start on same/close by dates).

10 people turned up last season (2014-15) and we had 9 the season before that (2013-14). Hoping to better the participation numbers and to a good, fun competition...

  • A warm welcome to ElfTwinkle, who returns to the tipping comps after a lonngggg silence... You were missed in many comps here smile And a hearty "welcome back" to the rest of us who lined up for the 12th edition of this competition....NOBODY has ever retained their title in this comp, so N-Bomb has a tough task ahead of him. He's also on a massive spoonless streak stretching back more than 5 years, so all the pressure this season will be on him grin wink

  • illiniman14 has started the season with a bang, with both his trump players doing really well, and he skips away to a small lead at the top ahead of paper_aero. The new "supersub" rule introduced this year has come into play right away....ozzz2002 had Vernon Philander scoring for him in place of his original pick of Rohit Sharma. gtho4 had mixed luck with the new rule. He had Amit Mishra scoring for him in place of Bhuvaneswar Kumar/Morne Morkel (both of who did not play). His other Test side also had 2 players (Corey Anderson and Hamish Rutherford) who did not play, but his supersub of Peter Siddle also did not play confused Howie72 also had a player (Rohit Sharma) and a supersub (Duminy) who did not take the field smile Maybe we will get better with this rule as the season progresses.

  • The opening round saw one small streak coming to an end. ozzz2002 went 19 rounds without a spoon but takes home the first spoon for the year.

  • Lots and lots of rain meant the second Test between India and South Africa was a one-day affair frown 4 days were lost to rain and this probably affected our scores here a lot confused The Australia-New Zealand Test was also affected a little by rain but not before some massive batting performances by David Warner (again mad cry ), Steve Smith, Adam Voges, Kane Williams (again sick ) and above all Ross Taylor, who broke a 111 year old record of the highest score on Australian soil by a visiting batsman (and whom NONE of us picked here grin ) The Test also saw one of the most wayward and fiercest fast bowlers of his generation, Mitchell Johnson call it a day on international cricket.

  • Not one of us retained their position here from last round as we alllllll played a nice round of musical chairs smilee ElfTwinkle took home the round's HoF to zoom up the table, and there were movements up north for Howie, ozzz2002 and N-Bomb as well, while paper, srini and gtho4 all went the other way. paper_aero and wwe84 did NOT lodge trump players for the round so their last named trumps continued (for wwe, it was a straight switch between Steyn and Morkel).

  • gtho4 continued his tradition of naming just one team for the whole series, and again ended up with a bunch of players and substitutes who did not see any action...he takes the round's spoon as a result and moves into the cellar. Will he lodge a team for the 3rd round? (same teams 3rd Test)....let's wait and see smile

  • Interesting and historic week of cricket. The first-ever day-night Test was trialed at Adelaide with a pink ball and Australia duly won it in 3 days....top score in Test was 66! India ended South Africa's 9-year run of staying unbeaten away from home on some rank turners, with some of the finest batsmen in current cricket being made to look silly...top score in 3 Tests to date...85 confused

  • paper_aero takes home the HoF in a round dominated completely by bowlers even as the top 2 on the ladder hold on to their spots. Few of us continued our musical chairs from the last round. N-Bomb managed to score more points through his supersub than some of his regular picks this round grin ozzz2002 unfortunately was not so lucky and he takes home his 2nd spoon in 3 rounds frown

  • It was an incredible Test match for various reasons....not a game for the statistical-minded or the fans of big hits and all....South Africa lost, but it was one heck of a "blockathon" they displayed for close to 2 days to try and draw the Test...they played 143.1 overs in their second innings to score...143...the lowest by ANY Team in the history of cricket after playing over a 100 overs! It may have been painful, but sure was engrossing to watch! (see scorecard above for the batsmen who gamely tried to save their team)

  • N-Bomb takes home the rounds HoF and takes his spoonless streak in this competition into the 70s now...super-sub scoring this round: Amla for gtho4 in place of Harmer. ozzz2002 wins his 3rd spoon in 4 rounds.

  • After the end of the "first set" of this season's comp, gtho4 and ozzz2002 are already drifting away from the pack, wwe84 and srini701 are gamely trying to stay afloat, paper_aero and N-Bomb are running hard and very much in the mix, but it is the trio of ElfTwinkle, illiniman14 and Howie72 who are threatening to break away and make this a comp between themselves....

Next round of the competition involves some new teams (Sri Lanka, West Indies and England shortly)....round 5 includes the 2 Test matches starting from Thursday (Dec 10) in New Zealand and Australia, so please do remember to lodge fresh teams (this last bit to gtho4 grin )

  • West Indies dished out an apology of a Test match....Australia erred in giving the Windies the pride of their summer schedule...they would have been better off playing the New Zealanders...or did the Australian Board think Messrs Viv Richards, Lloyd, Lara, Greenidge, Holding, Ambrose and Walsh et al were all going to come and play them? And to think there will be 2 more rounds of the same fare grin Going to be tough picking the Australians in our teams here as you never know how many are actually going to get a chance to bat or bowl against these hapless guys the next 2 Tests confused

  • Sri Lanka were a little better than their Caribbean counterparts, but could not stop New Zealand from winning....the Kiwis are now unbeaten in 12 Tests at home since 2012....the usual suspects all performed well, but ozzz2002 takes the cake for picking Martin Guptill to deliver....ozzz gets into the HoF column this round....srini701 expected Steve Smith to feast on the Windies bowling, but it was Voges and Shaun Marsh who did so. We therefore have one more name falling off the "streaks" list this round, leaving our current leader Howie72 huffing and puffing to stay ahead of illiniman14 and also keep his own streak going....Defending champion N-Bomb had a second consecutive good round, and is trying to make up ground on the leaders....wwe84 is now without a HoF entry in this comp for over 26 rounds

  • Supersubs scoring this round: Herath for ozzz2002 (in place of Dilruwan Perera) and Siddle for gtho4 (in place of Carol Brathwaite)

Next round of the competition is the second Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand....if you dont lodge a team, your team from this round will continue to score for you.

  • Kane Williamson scored a century in the second innings of the Test and 2/3rds of the field here heaved a collective sigh...he was the trump for 6 of the 9 people this round and had scored only 1 run in the first innings....maybe our standings would have looked a little different had he failed the second time too confused As it is, there is absolutely NOTHING to separate the top 3 (top 4 actually as the difference between 3 and 4 is less than 200 points) with half the season gone shocked Probably the first time in the last 6-7 seasons we have been this close in our comp!!!

  • N-Bomb and gtho4 take their second HoF and spoon of the season respectively. Only one Supersub scoring this round: Ross Taylor for srini701 (and he didn't do a great job of it mad )

Next round of the comp is the Boxing Day Tests in South Africa and at Melbourne. Please do remember to lodge your tips for that round as they are fresh teams.

    Merry Christmas to all!

  • South Africa proved they are on a downward spiral, losing the first Test against England in a rather tame manner. Somehow it never looked like they were competing, even on their own home turf as England surprisingly looked the more hungrier, eager lot. Down under, West Indies did tad better than their first Test showing but still could not stop Australia from cantering to a comfortable series win...

  • wwe84 snapped his streak of "HoF-less" rounds in some style here in our comp, with some wonderful picks and trump selections...his last HoF in this competition was over 28 rounds and more than 2 years ago...

  • Most of us went for David Warner and De Villiers as our trumps....poor illiniman14 would have wished he did too after a tragic implosion by BOTH his trumps this round...Hazlewood and Alistair Cook both did not turn up for the Tests, and illiniman falls to his lowest this season as a result of that first spoon. N-Bomb becomes just the 3rd man this season to ascend to the top spot after another very steady round...his spoonless streak is still onnnnnn......

Supersubs scoring this round: ozzz2002 seems to have mastered the supersub rule the best here and is making the best use of it...he had 2 players (Shaun Marsh and Gary Ballance) who did not play the Test but had 2 supersubs who did better than most of the regular players (Nathan Lyon and Steve Finn). paper_aero had Steyn scoring for him instead of James Anderson this round.

Next round of the comp is the New Year Tests between these same teams and if you don't want to pick afresh, the teams in this round can continue to score (but I know of AT LEAST one of us who would want to change his trumps in a jiffy wink )

Wishing you and your loved ones a year filled with joy, peace, happiness and good health..and looking forward to some more great fun competitions for another year... HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  • A batting marathon and lots of rain at the other ground ensured this round went all topsy-turvy for most of us crazy England and South Africa each scored over 600 plus in their first innings in a match in which Moeen Ali (Man of match in last Test) went wicketless after 50 plus overs....Ben Stokes, Hashim Amla both scored double centuries, Bavuma and Bairstow scored centuries....Ali was the "trump" for a few of us here, while only Stokes and Bairstow made it into a couple of our teams!

  • The other Test in Sydney was completely affected by rain, and that affected us a lot....Most of our "trumps" (Voges, Khawaja and Smith) didn't get to do anything at all ( mad ) Howie is not complaining though...both his trumps managed to put in good performances and this means he leapfrogs N-Bomb into first place and at a healthy differential as well...illiniman14 is unravelling rapidly after a second successive spoon (He had Ali as one of his trumps).

Supersubs scoring this round: Warner instead of Bishoo for srini, Joe Root instead of Gary Ballance for ozzz (but not as "trump" wink )

We will skip the 3rd Test between England and South Africa and return for the 4th Test instead. Next round of our comp is the 5-match ODI series between India and Australia starting Tuesday, January 12. Please try and get your teams in before then...

David Warner played the first ODI against India and is now off (maybe for the rest of the series or 2-3 matches). He has been replaced by Usman Khawaja in the team.

Your "Supersub" only comes into action if any of your selected players do not even play a match. So in this case here, I am going to let Khawaja score for Warner for all who picked him (as trump too in some cases)...it was a direct switch of players.

All 9 of us had Warner in our teams smile (6 of us had him as the trump!!)

  • Entertaining and high-scoring matches featured all 5 ODI matches in which the bowlers were mostly reduced to fodder on either side. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, George Bailey, David Warner and Aaron Finch all scored runs by the bucketful as Australia won the series 4-1 (could have been 3-2 but for a spectacular collapse by India in the 4th match)

  • After two spoons, illiniman14 bounced back in style, winning his second HoF by a massive margin, and is back on podium position. srini701 also had a very good round and is now breathing down N-Bomb's neck for the last podium spot along with ElfTwinkle. Howie72 may well have sealed the title for this season. wwe84 takes home his second spoon for the season.

Supersubs scoring this round: When you have 15 players playing in a series from each side, how can you STILL manage to pick a player who does not get on to the field at all over 5 matches? confused ozzz2002, gtho4 and paper_aero all managed to find a couple of such players, and also managed to have excellent supersubs in place too. Steve Smith scored for both paper and gtho4 in place of Mohd Shami and Axar Patel, while George Bailey scored for ozzz2002 instead of Axar Patel.

Next round of the comp is the 4th Test between South Africa and England and the scores will come up in a day....

  • South Africa finally won their first Test match since January 2015 when Kagiso Rabada, their 20-year old fast bowler ran riot in both innings of the 4th and Final Test. Maybe there was not much intensity in the England camp after winning the series, but credit to the young Rabada, who becomes the third youngest ever player in Test history to to take 10 wickets in a Test with the second best figures ever by a South African@

  • More importantly for us here, the world's BEST batsman decided to spice it up, by bagging a duck in BOTH innings of the match grin Both Howie72 and ElfTwinkle picked AB De Villiers as their trump for the round and as a result of a most unusual failure from De Villiers, our comp has been split WIDE OPEN with just 3 rounds to go crazy

  • Howie's lead of over 300 points over his nearest rival has vanished, and heck, any of the top 4 can now win this comp over the next 3 rounds!! wwe84 wins the round's HoF (his second for the season), while gtho4's default team from the second Test wins him a 3rd spoon for the season.

Supersubs scoring this round: Hashim Amla in place of Steve Finn for paper_aero (nice pick wink )...I wrongly put Finn in the South African team in the table below sick

Next round of the comp will be the 5 ODI series between South Africa and England starting Wednesday, February 3, and much like the Australia-India ODI series, it may well be the crunch round for the season.

  • South Africa came from 0-2 behind to win the 5 match series 3-2 with some sterling all round performances, but Alex Hales was the clear man of the series with runs in every match...not one of us picked him grin

  • But paper_aero did pick Joe Root as his trump (the only one to do so, though 8 of us picked Root in our sides) and for that monster pick and score, he vaults from "nowhere in the picture" a round back, to a podium position! srini701 also had a very decent round and despite not having a single HoF this season, finds himself on the top spot for the first time, with just 2 rounds to go shocked

  • It could so easily have been illiniman14 sealing the title for himself, if only he had lodged his tips on time....his team still scored a very decent total from the last 4 ODIs to keep him in the running, but just consider this....the same team would have scored him 1722 points if he had lodged it a day earlier instead of the 1241 he ended up with confused Howie's picks of Morgan and Woakes backfired terribly, if its any consolation for illini...

Supersubs scoring this round: NONE...as all our players played 2 matches at least in the series...a first this season wink

With just the 2 Tests between New Zealand and Australia to go, our comp this season is totally wide open and any 3 from the top 5 can actually finish on top....has been the closest we ever had in the 6 years I have been running it!! Let's see which way the die rolls when the next round is scored tongue tongue

  • The last time N-Bomb saw his name in red in this particular comp was way back in December 2010. Since then, he went 77 rounds without a spoon spread over 4 full seasons. And on the home stretch of a 5th season his luck finally ran out crazy

  • David Warner had a bad match even as his team thumped New Zealand in Brendon McCullum's 99th and penultimate Test by an innings. Can the Kiwis pick themselves up and give a fitting farewell to McCullum in his last Test? We'll know next week...

  • An inspired pick of Adam Voges helped srini701 finally win his first HoF this season and consolidate his position at the top...but the focus in the final round will all be on the next 3 players on the standings, as they battle for the 2 remaining podium positions...it's too close to call!

Supersubs scoring this round: NONE again! confused

The final round of this season will be the second Test between the same sides starting Saturday, February 20....Please get your picks in well before the toss wink

Ahhhh yes, did you persuade Richard Illingworth to get it so wrong with his no ball call so you could get another 233 points? lol

Also, that was McCullum's 100th test. smile

Oooohhh yeah...totally forgot about the umpiring goof-up which allowed me all those points wink and thanks for the correction...I thought McCullum will play his 100th and then retire!

  • Brendon McCullum bowed out of international cricket in style, hitting the fastest Test century of all-time and claiming the record for the most number of sixes in Test history, but could not stop the ever-improving Australians from winning the Test and the series 2-0.

  • Like a true long-distance running race, Howie72, illiniman14 and N-Bomb did all the pace-setting the entire season, duly allowing srini701 and paper_aero to slip past them all on the home stretch and walk away with the big medals for the season! There was no way these 2 should have finished among the medals...paper_aero slipped after the initial two rounds and was never higher than 5th till the last 2-3 rounds...srini701 was never in the top 5 till round 11 of the season...the England-South Africa ODI series turned everything around here in our comp. illiniman14 missed an entire match and Howie72 had a bad round (compared to srini and paper) and suddenly the comp was thrown wide open. N-Bomb's first spoon in 5 years saw him slip in the penultimate round and Howie's decision to "spice things up for the 2nd and 3rd spot" in the final round with a completely different team boomeranged on him. His big cushion from the first 10 rounds helped him hold on to the bronze medal, but this was one comp Howie72 can seriously wonder how it slipped past him confused . So on behalf of both paper_aero and srini701, I sincerely thank both Howie72 and illiniman14 for allowing us to win the top spots this season grin

  • ElfTwinkle did her best to keep pace with the leaders for most part of the season (she didn't win a single spoon! smilee ) but a medal placing proved a little hard for her in the end....maybe next season for her...wwe84 broke his HoF-less streak this season but there was not much for him to shout about either. After a good run last season, ozzz2002 slipped early in the season this time, getting 3 of the first 4 spoons and never recovered from there. gtho4 was strangely never himself this entire season and so finishes in the cellar of a comp...not too often do you see that name there at the end of a season in most comps shocked

So a "historic" season ends in this comp. The next season of World Cricket will return in October-November, but in the meanwhile, we will have the IPL, which returns after a one-year hiatus for the World Cup in 2015....Hoping to see a good turn out for the IPL in April then and with sincere thanks to all for lasting the season...
