The FA Cup, which started in 1872, is the world's oldest football knock-out competition .. season 2016 is the 135th edition. The preliminary qualifying rounds started in mid-August. The Football Association has accepted entries from 736 teams for this season's FA Cup, comprising 644 non-league teams plus the 92 league teams. The all-time record is 763 teams, which was set in 2012. The league teams are the 44 teams in the FAPL (20) and FLC (24), and the 48 teams in League One and League Two (24 each).- the 4th and last qualifying round for the 644 non-league teams will be played today Saturday 24th October.
- the 32 survivors from the qualifiers progress to the First Round where they join the 48 teams in L1 and L2 (equals 80 teams).
- the 20 survivors from the Second Round will join the FAPL and FLC teams in the Third Round (equals 64 teams).
- from there it's a straight knock-out through to the final in May.
This year's FA Cup tipping comp will run for 6½ months over 10 rounds from Saturday 7th November 2015 until Saturday 21st May 2016 (FA Cup First Round through to the FA Cup Final). Although there are 10 rounds in the tipping comp we only lodge picks on 8 occasions:- the First Round of 40 games will be split into two rounds of 16 games each by ignoring 8 games.
- the Second Round has 20 games .. 4 games are ignored.
- the Third Round of 32 games is be split into two rounds of 16 games each.
- that's 5 tipping rounds which, with the remaining 5 rounds of the FA Cup, gives us 10 tipping rounds.
- we also have advance picks so that each round is always worth 16 pts.

dead-heats | one point for each correct pick .. home win, draw, away win. In other words,
it's always at 90 minutes; penalty-shootout lotteries are ignored.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours (ineligible for bonus pts);
but if the wooden spoon score is higher, default is the ws score. Default for
the semi-finals, the final and advance picks is the wooden spoon score.
you score a bonus point if you pick a game solo .. or one of two players if we
have 10+ runners; or one of three if 18 or more runners.
one bonus point for 11+/16;
14/16 or higher receives a further bonus point (plus a knighthood from HM).
no one picks win, whoever picks a draw;
no one picks draw, whoever picks the upset win;
if you pick all home teams (or all bar one), ineligible for bonus pts.
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes; if they
are identical, bonus pts will be used. |
This year's comp is the 14th edition of the FA Cup tipping comp. Last season's comp was won by srini701, who's the only person to have won this three times and the only person to have retained his title (when he won it in 2009 and 2010). He's had three podium finishes in this comp, all gold. Howie72 and gtho4 have also had three podiums, none are gold. PaulE holds the record for podium finishes with four (two were gold) .. and dg_dave will be hoping it's third time lucky: he's had back-to-back silver medals for the last two comps. | . | Previous winners & medallists: | | . | 2003

Last year's FA Cup comp had a field of 16 runners (one less than the year before) .. the no show last year was KrivoyRog. He was the then-defending titleholder. This year there were 14 runners at the gate when the starter fired his gun. There were three no shows (BxBarracuda, LeoDaVinci & FussBudget) and ElfTwinkle returned after an extended vacation. One again there were no rookies.
Non-league team Altrincham knocked-out Barnsley, who play in League One. No-one picked this win, but srini701 earnt himself a bonus point as he went out on a limb and picked a draw.
Wigan Athletic were knocked out by Bury (both of them play in League One). Wigan won the FA Cup in 2013, in their first-ever cup final appearance, when they beat Manchester City 1-0. They were playing the FA Premier League at the time and two years later were relegated to League One when they finished second from bottom in the FLC in May 2015.
Bury's claim to fame is their record breaking 6-0 win against Derby County in the 1903 FA Cup Final. They won the cup that year without conceding a goal (equalling the zero record set by Preston North End when they won the cup in 1889). They were relegated from the First Division (now the FAPL) 26 years later and haven't been back since. Another piece of trivia: on Sat 27 Aug 2005 Bury became the first team to score 1,000 goals in all four divisions of English football.
N-Bomb was the only player whose correct picks reached double digits. For that effort he collected a bonus point. He also scored a bonus point for a solo pick ... he and paper_aero were the only players who picked Bury to beat Wigan Athletic. They're at the top of the pile at the end of Round 1a. N-Bomb leads by 2 pts.
The first spoon goes to srini701, the defending titleholder. He's 7 pts adrift at the rear of the field. Round 1b will be completed on Monday night.

Port Vale play in the third tier of English football (aka League One). They were held to a draw at home by Maidenhead Utd, a non-league team, who play two divisions below them in the 6th tier. Maidenhead equalised at the death, after the end of regulation time, deep into injury time (in the 94th minute).

wwe84 and ozzz2002 collected a bonus point for this result. They consulted their ouija board and chose a draw.
The biggest road trip in the First Round was Carlisle United (6th in League Two) in the north of England away to Plymouth Argyle (League Two leaders) in the south-west. It's 388 miles & 6 hrs, one way. Argyle was a special to win this tie but it wasn't to be. Carlisle did the unthinkable and won .. and this was picked by wwe84 and George95, who scored a bonus point each for this outrageous pick.
Bristol Rovers (League Two) lost at home to Chesham United, the part-timers from the 7th tier. George95 scored another outrageous bonus point for this solo pick.
illiniman14 picked the draw Braintree Town (National League) at home to Oxford United (League Two) .. and the 7th solo pick for the round was by dg_dave for Aldershot Town (National League) v Bradford City (League One). Only one game was a unanimous pick - Millwall (League One) at home to AFC Fylde (6th tier)- we all struck pay dirt with that one.
This round's winners were Sypher and illiniman14 with 10/16. Sypher replaces N-Bomb at the top of the pile, and illiniman14 jumps up *eight* places from 4th last into 3rd place. N-Bomb drops to second .. 3 pts cover the top half of the standings and 3 pts also cover the bottom half (apart from the tail-ender).

Three games were picked by all of us, and just one game was picked by no-one (three players scored a bonus point for this game by picking a draw). There were three solo picks and five players scored a bonus for picking 10+/16.
Sypher and dg_dave were this round's winners with picks of 11/16 .. that's back-to-back wins for Sypher, who extends his lead out front to 3 points .. dg_dave jumped *six* places from 10th to equal 4th.
You can throw a blanket over the next five players (separated by a single point). From there there's another gap of 3 points to the rest of the field. We welcome aboard FussBudget, who joins us as a late starter!
There are four non-league teams left in the FA Cup: Eastleigh (near Southampton) from the fifth tier are the only team who will definitely play in the Third Round. Grimsby Town, another fifth-tier team, play their Second Round match on Monday night. Grimsby is near Hull, on the other side of the River Humber. Whitehawk (a suburb of Brighton) from the sixth tier need to get through a replay .. ditto seventh-tier Salford City (located on the outskirts of Manchester).

Only one game was picked by all of us, and just two games were picked by no-one .. paper_aero scored a bonus point for picking a draw Brentford v Walsall. The Exeter v Liverpool game was a complete upset. There were six solo picks and the three weekly winners scored a bonus for picking 10+/16.
Sypher is no longer in the lead by 3 points. Although he scored 9/16, just one below the three weekly winners, paper_aero (one of those three) joins him out front courtesy of two bonus points. The four behind the two leaders are separated by a mere 3 pts.
The other two winners: N-Bomb was pushed off the podium by George95 and srini701 jumped *five* places from 13th to equal 8th.

Eastleigh, the sole non-league teams left in the FA Cup, were eliminated last night, Tue 19th Jan, when they lost the replay 2-3 away to Bolton.
The draw for the Fourth Round took place last week. All replays have been decided except two: Leicester v Spurs and Liverpool
v Exeter are paying tonight, Wed 20th Jan, which will complete the list of 16 teams left in the FA Cup.

Welcome to the Sypher show. Four games were picked by no-one and Sypher picked 10 of the remaining 12 games for yet another weekly win. He's now skipped away to a humungous 6 pt lead .. and 6 pts cover the next 7 players.
Sypher was the only player to go out on a limb and pick Palace to win away at Southampton. This outrageous pick was worth 3 pts .. he scored one point for the pick, another point for the solo pick, and yet another point for picking 10+/16.

Sypher score back-to-back wins with 13/16 and collects three bonus points (solo pick, 10+ & near-miss perfect). Although he extends his lead out front to 8 pts over N-Bomb, all his advance picks have died; he has no live picks for the final. N-Bomb has a live pick for the winner, plus one finalist, with his advance picks (which is maximum of 8 pts possible out of 10 pts for advance picks, which equals the deficit behind Sypher).

Crystal Palace will play Manchester United in the FA Cup Final on Saturday 21st May, in a re-run of the 1990 final which ended 3-3 aet. United won the replay 1-0 five days later on Thu 17 May 1990. It will be United's 19th cup final appearance (which equals record set by Arsenal last year) and, if they win, it will be their 12th win (equals record set by Arsenal last year). Palace have never won the FA Cup. It will be their 2nd cup final appearance.
