We are a few weeks to the start of the new season. This is the fourth iteration of our NCAA Basketball comp, and here are the rules: 1. One point per correct pick 2. Deadline will be the tipoff of the first game of each week. Many games (especially later on in the season) have no set tipoff time as of November, so getting tips in before 11 AM of the day in question is usually safe but cannot be guarantees. 3. "Week 4" is once again the Big Ten-ACC Challenge, and will start on Monday, November 30. 4. Late tips will be ineligible for any games that have already started and incur a 1-point penalty. 5. Default tips are road teams (or those listed first for neutral-site games); or wooden spoon if it is higher. 6. Late starters will enter at the lowest score at that time, and after 4 weeks of not tipping you will be considered inactive. 7. End-of-season tiebreakers are HOF v. WS differential; then HOFs; then bonus points. - This comp is separate from the March Madness comp Bonus Points 1. One point for solo picks or one of two 2. One point for picking 13+/15 3. Ineligible for bonus points if tipper picks all home teams or all but one -The team listed second is considered the 'home' team, even for neutral-site games.

The tipoff of the NCAA basketball season finally happened Friday afternoon, and N-Bomb grabs the first weekly win, as he is tied at the top of the leaderboard with wwe84 after the latter picked up the only bonus point of the round. N-Bomb finished 3rd two years ago and 2nd last year, so he is hoping his climb continues to the top this year. At the other end of the spectrum, this comp's first winner 3 years ago, gtho4, had a rough go in the opening round as he picks up the spoon.
One of the big matchups of the week, #9 Gonzaga against Pittsburgh, scheduled as part of the Armed Forces Classic in Okinawa, Japan, was cancelled at halftime due to slippery conditions. The Classic is no stranger to bad conditions, since in 2012 a Georgetown-Florida game was cancelled due to the same problem. That same year, two games were cancelled at the similar Carrier Classic played on board aircraft carriers, also due to slippery conditions.
One of the more surprising results for our purposes involved the debut of Shaka Smart at Texas. He planned on bringing his "Havoc" style to the Longhorns... but the Washington Huskies brought their own type of havoc. Despite being 11-point underdogs, Washington only trailed for 18 seconds in the 2nd half (down 65-64) and won 77-71.
It is going to be a long season for your comp organizer, as an injury-depleted Illinois lost to a scrappy North Florida team 93-81. But other upsets scattered the country as well. Last year's national runners-up #17 Wisconsin fell to Western Illinois 69-67. Sacramento State went into Tempe and trounced Arizona State 66-63. The massive games begin on just this upcoming Tuesday, as #2 Kentucky welcomes #5 Duke to Lexington.

N-Bomb takes his second weekly win in as many weeks but only has a 1-point lead on 3 tippers behind him. wwe84 was tied with him last week and did 1 point worse this week; George95 was already a point back and matched him for the weekly win; and ElfTwinkle ended up getting more points with 2 solo bonuses. It was a tightly-packed grouping this week, with the win and spoon only 2 points apart. gtho4 shared in the win and makes up for his spoon last week. Three in the middle of the pack - dg_dave, illiniman14, and ozzz2002 - all shared the spoon.
Just looking at the results with no outside knowledge makes it seem like a boring week - 14 home teams won out of 15 games, meaning that if you got every single game right you wouldn't even get the perfect bonus since you didn't pick enough road teams to qualify. However, one game in particular sticks out: Northern Iowa defended their home court against #1 North Carolina, albeit without Marcus Paige. North Carolina led by as many as 12 in the first half and up to 16 early in the 2nd half, but a 14-2 run ended that. For 11:30 in the 2nd half, the two teams played within 3 points of each other, and Northern Iowa held out to win 71-67.
Several teams outside the top 25 showed themselves worthy of inclusion in the rankings. Miami (FL) destroyed their early competition all by double digits, including #16 Utah and #22 Butler, on their way to a current #15 ranking. Xavier did much of the same, crushing #24 Michigan 86-70 and Alabama 64-45 on their way to the #23 ranking. Oregon also found themselves victorious over #20 Baylor to be ranked #25.
On the other side, several ranked teams felt the sting of early defeats. #13 Indiana left the Maui Invitational with some good tans and a 6th-place finish, losing to both Wake Forest and UNLV, with a trip to #6 Duke coming in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge. #22 LSU lost to both Marquette and NC State in the Legends Classic. Then on Thursday (sorry for the late update), #17 Notre Dame celebrated Thanksgiving by going down to Monmouth 70-68.

A big shift at the top as N-Bomb moves down to 3rd despite a double-digit score while George95 goes into 1st by 2 points as he picks up a perfect bonus. illiniman14 also picks up the bonus and goes into 2nd place, as those two actually had the exact same picks. ozzz2002 tried for several underdogs this week and didn't hit any of them, leading to a spoon and falling back into 10th.
#21 Miami (FL) suffered the shock of the week, both in real life and in this comp, as nobody picked Northeastern. Following victories over #16 Utah and #22 Butler, the Hurricanes appeared to be on a hot streak. However, Northeastern got out to an early 22-11 lead, but let to slowly close to 32-30 before halftime. They relinquished the lead for the first time under 8 minutes and didn't gain it back until there were 57 seconds left. With 35 seconds left, Miami hit a 3-pointer, stole the ball back 3 seconds later and hit another jumper, going up 1. However, as time expired, Northeastern hit a jumper to complete their upset.
Two other games were contenders for our game of the week. Memphis and Ohio State played the first 40 minutes of their game equal, leading to overtime at the score of 75-75. Doing the math, that means each team averaged over 9 points every 5 minutes. During the 5 minutes of overtime, Ohio State managed exactly 1 point and fell 81-76. George Washington continued their impressive opening of the season (following their win over #6 Virginia) by leading for the last 26 minutes of the game over Tennessee to a 73-70 win.
One of the best matchups on Friday that couldn't be part of our comp since it was part of a later round of a preseason tournament featured #10 Gonzaga taking down #18 Connecticut in the 3rd place game of the Battle 4 Atlantis. In the championship of the tournament, Syracuse beat #25 Texas A&M 74-67. Upsets included Providence beating #11 Arizona 69-65 at the DirecTV Wooden Legacy and Richmond over #14 California 94-90 at the Las Vegas Invitational.

George95 has taken his newfound lead and sprinted out in front of the field, hitting all but 1 game this week, earning him the only perfect bonus point of the week. The only game he missed earned a solo bonus point for Howie72 and dg_dave, the latter picking up a spoon but stayed in the same spot since he matched the default score of wwe84.
The Big Ten won the Big Ten-ACC Challenge yet again. After the ACC won the first 10 years of the contest from 1999-2008, the Big Ten has won 5 of the last 7, with the other two years being ties. With almost every matchup very even (except for Duke-Indiana), the the ACC was expected to pull this one out, but too many Big Ten road wins doomed their fate.
The marquee matchup was #9 North Carolina hosting #2 Maryland on Tuesday. At first it didn't seem like much of a matchup, as North Carolina pulled way ahead to a 32-19 lead, but Maryland closed it to 6 points by halftime. The game was eventually tied at 55 and the Terrapins grabbed the lead at 59-58, but that's the only lead they would get all night. North Carolina slowly pulled away after that and won 89-81.
Four games ended up going into overtime, and only 1 of those ended with the home team winning. Miami (FL), Northwestern, and a struggling Wisconsin team all pulled off those road victories. The home winner was Iowa, who ended up clinching the Challenge for the Big Ten. On a bittersweet note for the comp organizer, Illinois actually showed signs of life in a close game with Notre Dame, but in the end, still lost.

A good day for home teams paid dividends for illiniman14 (who moves into second alone) and dg_dave (who moves up to fourth) as they tie for the weekly win. ozzz2002 was at the other end (though not far off, as only 4 points separated a win from a spoon) and falls back slightly from the field. He did, however, gain a bonus point along with wwe84 for the only solo bonus points this week - even though one game was picked by no one (despite Boise State winning at home) and some solo bonuses were there for the taking. George95 remains solidly in the lead as he regains his form and gets back into double digits.
Just when we thought we knew what teams would be dominant this year, #3 North Carolina took a trip to Austin to face Texas. Roy Williams was 6-1 against Texas as the head coach of Kansas so long ago, but since taking the job at North Carolina had gone 1-5. First-year coach Shaka Smart was also struggling to get a solid footing so far at Texas this year, so that was sure to change, right? North Carolina got up to an 8-point lead late in the second half despite playing close for most of the first period, but it closed to 44-42 at halftime. During the first 38 minutes of the game, Texas led a total of 2:55, but took over at 78-76. They played down to the wire at 82-82, until Javan Felix hit a shot at the buzzer to send the Longhorns home with the victory.
Only 8 teams remain unbeaten in college basketball. A majority of them are no surprise: Iowa State, Oklahoma, Xavier, Michigan State, and Purdue. SMU, despite a ban from the 2016 postseason, is also with some impressive wins under their belt. The two surprises are South Carolina (who has played absolutely no one) at 8-0 and Arkansas-Little Rock (who has at least played San Diego State) also at 8-0.

George95 holds on to his 4-point lead, but the group behind him goes back to the same group of 3 from 2 weeks ago, this time just a point closer. ElfTwinkle pulls in the win this week, as she managed to get double digits in a fairly low-scoring week for the rest of us. dg_dave got the spoon but only drops back 1 spot. Despite a number of upsets, only one solo bonus was given this week (to wwe84), while another 8 points were denied with the home teams actually winning in those games.
Upsets littered the field this week, starting with one of the first games on Saturday: Wichita State v. Seton Hall. The Shockers had been struggling this year, but then got star Fred VanVleet back and shut down #25 Utah in their last game. However, the Pirates were having none of it, coming back from an 11-point deficit to force overtime. There, an 8-0 run put Seton Hall up for good, and they won 80-76.
Two games shocked us this weekend, but only 1 gave a bonus point for it. wwe84 was bold enough to take Utah against #7 Duke and was rewarded for it. Utah led the majority of the game but had to fight back at the end to force overtime at 60-60. There, the offenses exploded and the Utes pulled it out 77-75. Elsewhere, a struggling Ohio State met up with #4 Kentucky in Brooklyn, and put together a dominant performance. A 12-2 first half run gave the Buckeyes a 12-point halftime lead, and they never felt threatened until the 3-minute mark where Kentucky pulled to within 3. That's as close as they would get, as a few insurance points gave Ohio State the win 74-67.
Another upset saw Northern Iowa claiming the "Best Team in Iowa" moniker with a big win over #5 Iowa State 81-79. #9 Purdue felt the upset bug as well, falling to #17 Butler at the Crossroads Classic, a 4-team tournament for the 4 biggest teams in Indiana. #12 Villanova was beaten but not upset, as they lost to #8 Virginia 86-75.

George95's lead takes a slight ding as illiniman14 and N-Bomb gain a point. The top 4 (Howie72 in 4th) are slightly separated from the rest of the field. ozzz2002 (who originally forgot to pick the first game and said taking Kentucky probably wouldn't matter) is glad he got all his picks in on time as he picks up the weekly win. wwe84 got a solo pick but also a spoon.
The big matchup of the post-Christmas slate was the annual Battle of the Bluegrass with #12 Kentucky hosting #16 Louisville. The Wildcats sprinted out to an early lead, but the Cardinals fought back to even for most of the half. However, a late run put Kentucky up 8 at the half. Despite the lead increasing to as many as 13, it was down to 1 with 5:30 left, but Louisville would never hold the lead in the second half and fell 75-73.
Two games doled out solo bonus points. First, Florida State, who lost 5 straight games to Florida before last year, has now won 2 straight. The Seminoles dominated the first half, but the lead was down to 1 with 34 seconds left, but Florida State iced the game 73-71. Also, #1 Michigan State took a trip to Iowa without star Denzel Valentine, and they felt the sting, being controlled from the beginning and going down 83-70.
Aside of that upset of the #1 team, #22 Cincinnati lost to Temple 77-70. This past week #6 Xavier and #9 Butler both lost as well, but to ranked conference opponents.

George95's lead was 3 over illiniman14 last week, so a poor week by the latter might be seen as a reprieve. However, Howie72 came from 4th place and earned a weekly win accompanied by a perfect bonus to cut the lead down to 2. N-Bomb kept pace as well and the top 3 are 3 points clear of the field. ozzz2002 picked up a spoon mitigated by a solo bonus, but still fared better than dg_dave who failed to lodge his picks and got only the 5 road victories.
The Big East is coming on strong as the best conference in college basketball this year. #6 Xavier lost their second-leading scorer in their last game to a nasty fall on his head, but came back strong with a big 88-69 win over #9 Butler at home. #12 Providence also won in a strong performance over St. John’s winning 83-65. #16 Villanova won as well over a strong Creighton team.
Another contender for conference of the year is the Big 12. #2 (and soon to be #1) Kansas put together what is likely the best performance of the year, completely destroying #23 Baylor 102-74. Baylor hadn't lost by more than 20 points since they lost to then-#8 Kansas in January 2007. #3 Oklahoma also won a hotly-contested matchup with #11 Iowa State 87-83, where surprisingly every tipper chose the Sooners despite being a top-15 matchup.
Elsewhere, Iowa may have taken advantage of an ailing #1 Michigan State earlier in the week, but #14 Purdue had no such excuses. With their 70-63 victory, the Hawkeyes become the surprising frontrunner in the Big Ten along with #4 Maryland, who will not be tested in conference for 3 games until they play Michigan.

Howie72 hits his second straight near perfect bonus and weekly win as he takes over first place after George95 held that spot for the last 7 weeks. wwe84 picks up his second spoon after trying for a few solo bonus picks. The top 3 have somewhat separated themselves from the field, as they are within 3 points of each other and 4th place is 4 points behind. The gap between 5th and 6th widens to 8 points, but with just under half the season left there is plenty of time to come back.
USC and #7 Arizona met in southern California and the upstart Trojans led most of the way, up to 12 points with 5:30 left in the game. A 12-point Arizona run erased that, and they headed to overtime at 73-73. They ended overtime at 79-79; second overtime at 86-86; third overtime at 95-95; and needed a fourth overtime to decide it. Two late free throws finally put USC up 103-101 to end the marathon game.
#4 Virginia was bit by the upset bug at Georgia Tech, going down to an in-conference foe 68-64. #22 South Carolina remained undefeated with their victory over surprisingly disappointing Vanderbilt. They would lose later on during the week to Alabama, leaving SMU, who is banned from playing in any postseason tournaments, as the only undefeated team in the country.

Having given up the lead for a week, George95 is back on top with a weekly win, and he keeps his spoonless streak alive in the process. Howie72 is merely a point back, and N-Bomb is comfortably in third. Those three are separated from illiniman14 by 4 points, who sits on an island on his own, separated by another 4 points from ElfTwinkle, who herself has a 7-point cushion from 6th. ozzz2002 picks up his 5th spoon and loses a point to gtho4 who lucked out with a default 9.
ozzz2002 did pick up a bonus point taking Notre Dame over #9 Duke on the road. The defending champions now stand at 14-4 after losing two in a row, with one previously against Clemson. dg_dave and wwe84 earned bonus points as well with another top-25 upset, as Seton Hall took down #12 Providence 81-72 on the road. Meanwhile, everyone was able to predict Indiana and #5 North Carolina's victories.
The revolving door of #1 teams continues, as #1 Kansas lost to #11 West Virginia on Wednesday. #8 Miami (FL) fell on Saturday to a suddenly-white hot Clemson, who continues their run following victories over #16 Louisville and #9 Duke. The shock of the day came from the state of Alabama, where #14 Kentucky has fallen on hard times, going down to Auburn 75-70.

Three of the top 4 (Howie72, N-Bomb, and illiniman14) all get weekly wins as George95 is now tied at the top. The top 3 are fairly secure in those spots, while the drop from 4th to 5th is now 7 points. ozzz2002 picks up a spoon but supports his score with 2 solo picks.
Everyone in the field took an otherwise-struggling #23 Kentucky team beat Vanderbilt as well as Connecticut over Georgetown. Two solo points were earned in overtime as #16 Providence beat #4 Villanova on the road 82-76. Meanwhile, California was able to squeak out a 1-point victory over #12 Arizona.
#4 Villanova may have lost, but the most surprising loss of the weekend came on Sunday, when a mediocre Temple team defended their home turf against previously-undefeated (although on a postseason ban so it won't mean anything come tournament time) #8 SMU.

Sypher came through on a high-scoring week as the only tipper to take home a perfect bonus point and a weekly win as well. The only change in the rankings came towards the back, as gtho4 passed wwe84 to move into 8th. The gap between 4th and 5th widens to 9 points as ElfTwinkle picks up a spoon.
Three games resulted in everyone getting a point - those victories for #1 Oklahoma, Utah, and USC. No solo bonus points were awarded this week, but ElfTwinkle came the closest as she was the only tipper to take #20 Kentucky on the road at #4 Kansas. They were able to force overtime, but the Jayhawks held serve with a 90-84 victory.
The top 25 saw several teams go down over the weekend. Rivals #16 Louisville and #20 Kentucky both went down to ranked opponents. #9 West Virginia lost on the road by a wide margin to Florida. #15 Miami (FL) met a similar fate as NC State held host and walked out with a 85-69.

Notre Dame surprised the group and country this week with their upset at home over #2 North Carolina, but it was upstaged later in the day when Kansas State defended their home turf against #1 Oklahoma. Both games resulted in only 3 correct picks from our group.
Other notable upsets included #25 South Carolina over #8 Texas A&M to begin their free fall over the next couple weeks; #12 Wichita State fell to a mediocre Illinois State team on the road; and #22 Indiana was shocked by a terrible Penn State squad.

Another weekly win for ElfTwinkle brings her ever closer to 4th, while N-Bomb takes his weekly win into 2nd place. On the other side of a low-scoring week falls gtho4 and wwe84, who both pick up spoons.
Four bonus points littered the field this week. ElfTwinkle and ozzz2002 were able to take the #6 team in the nation for their bonus points, as #6 Kansas went on the road and defeated #3 Oklahoma 76-72. Sypher took his by being the sole tipper to take Northern Iowa over #25 Wichita State; and wwe84 did the same when he boldly took a victorious Stanford at home over #11 Oregon.
Three tippers took the other big upset of the week: Wisconsin in a 70-57 romp over #2 Maryland. Duke finally showed some life after being demoted from the top 25 with a home win over #7 Virginia 63-62. LSU continued their up-and-down season by beating a struggling #15 Texas A&M 76-71. Michigan held serve at home over #18 Purdue 61-56. And finally, #21 Baylor fell to Texas Tech 84-66 at home.

Another change at the top puts N-Bomb back on top, somewhere he hasn't been since week 2. He was able to do so thanks to George95's first spoon - of the entire competition. His 69-week run went back to the genesis of this comp, and it ends with 2 overtime losses and several other upsets. He is joined in getting spoons by Sypher and wwe84. ozzz2002, meanwhile, easily picked the best this week with 11 correct picks as well as 2 solo bonus points.
Two of the 8 solo bonuses this week (Howie72 and ElfTwinkle) were from a previously nose-diving Texas A&M taking down #14 Kentucky at home in overtime 79-77. In the other overtime matchup, Army showed they were the best service academy team in the nation, beating Navy on the road in double overtime 80-78 (Air Force is rather mediocre this year) - earning bonuses for dg_dave and wwe84. Sypher and ozzz2002 both earned bonuses with Pittsburgh's win on the road over Syracuse 66-52. dg_dave got his 2nd bonus point when #25 Baylor took down #24 Texas on the road, and ozzz2002 got his second with a changing of the guard atop the West Coast Conference, with Saint Mary’s beating long-time giant Gonzaga on the road 63-58.
For the first time in weeks, a top-5 team didn't lose on Saturday, although this year AP top-5 teams are 22-24 on the road, an all-time record. #15 Dayton was shocked by St. Bonaventure at home 79-72. Aside from that, Notre Dame fell to Georgia Tech on the road 63-62. Overall, the top 25 was relatively upset-free compared to previous weeks.
