I distinctly remember the first single I bought. It was 'Silver Bells' by Earl Grant, when I was 8, and the only reason I bought it was because it was 5c in a second-hand shop!
I didn't buy any albums for quite a while, because I used to just permanently borrow my older brothers' albums! I think, though, the first one I actually bought myself was either 'Blood, Sweat & Tears' (once again, I bought it second-hand), or 'Words and Music' by Benny Hill.
You would probably wonder how I could get the two mixed up, wouldn't you?

Like most of my generation we existed on Older siblings to buy the records (They were 5 or 6 years older!)
First single (and I wish I still had it!) was The Rolling Stones "Come On"
I'm fairly sure the first LP I bought was Bob Dylan : "Times they are a'changing"

The first album that was given to me was Menudo di Collecion (I think I spelled the Spanish part correct! ).

The first album I bought for myself was Menudo's Reaching Out, their first English-language album.

I have quite a few of the albums mentioned above!

The first single I ever bought was "Come Together" by the Beatles. The first album I ever bought was, believe it or not, "20 Dynamic Hits". I don't have it any more but I must have played it to death because I still remember most of the songs on it and when I hear them on the radio, I remember that they were from that album.

In fact, I just "googled" it and here's what was on it:

Side One

Ma Belle Amie – Tee Set
Venus – Shocking Blue
Jean – Oliver
Melting Pot – Blue Mink
Wheeling West Virginia – Neil Sedaka
Smiley – Ronnie Burns
Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head – B. J. Thomas
Hitchin’ A Ride – Vanity Fare
Reach Out – Gene Pierson
The Star – Ross D. Wyllie

Side Two

And When I Die – Blood, Sweat & Tears
Arizona – Mark Lindsay
She’s My Baby – Johnny O’Keefe
Ballad Of Easy Rider – Byrds (my favourite)
Kozmic Blues – Janis Joplin
My Elusive Dreams – Bobby Vinton
Everything Is Beautiful – Ray Stevens
Come Into My Life – Col Joye
Groupie – New Dream
Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You – O. C. Smith

Back in the sixties, there was a string of similarly titled albums - e.g. 20 Electrifying Hits, 20 Stupendous Hits etc.

First album I bought was on cassette and that was ' Can't Slow Down' - Lionel Richie.

The first 7" single I bought though was 'Last Christmas' - Wham !!

Since then....well my collection is sooo vast due to my DJing that I have lost count as to how many vinyl albums, 12" or 7"'s I have got !!

CD collection is into the thousands !!

MG, I think that was one of the first ones I 'borrowed' from my brothers. And I still have it!

The first record that I bought was a 45, Can't Get Used To Losing You by Andy Williams (1963). I still have it upstairs, in fact I still have all the 45's that I have bought, I threw out my old Dansette record player a couple of years ago (I know, it might be worth good money now but I threw it out).

The first LP would have been Ray Charles, off-hand I couldn't give a title but it has a red cover with a headshot of him, it must be about the house somewhere.

The first album I brought was the self titled debut by Mungo Jerry. It had a 3D outer and inner cover and came complete with a pair of 3D glasses! (And yes, I still have it). I brought 2 45s when i first brought singles, and they were "Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes" by Edison Lighthouse, and "Friends" by Arrival. They are stashed away in boxes along with many others I have collected over the years.Just can't bear to part with any of them!

My first cd's were Linda Ronstadt's "Greatest Hits" and Bob Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks". I bought them both on the same day I purchased my first cd player. I think I also bought
Springsteen's "Born To Run" the same day. That cd sounded
terrible, as did a lot of the early cd's, until they were remastered. Interesting how the record industry managed that-
first rush release poor sounding cd's, then reissue same cd's
remastered from original tapes, and then re-reissue same cd's remastered and with bonus tracks. And sometimes re-re-reissue cd's at an anniversary point (ie 20th anniversary of release of original record, 5th anniversary of death of artist, etc) that are remastered, have bonus tracks, and include
different takes of songs from the album (plus, maybe, live tracks and/or interviews and/or dvd material). How many versions of the same record do we need?

I remember my parents buying me albums for birthdays and christmas when i was quite young - i had all of kylie and jason's stuff!
the first album (on cassette) thati saved up for and brought for myself was 'step by step' by new kids on the block. fantastic to this day. when i hear it i just remember sitting on our school field in summer trying to get a tan and singing our hearts out to a crusty old set of speakers rigged up to a walkman! aaaaaah those were the days.
my first album on cd on the other hand was 'jagged little pill' by alanis morisette. and that's a whole different story.

My first albums were "Steppenwolf the Second", followed by "The Hello People" (anyone remember them?), and then "Happy Trails" by Quicksilver Messenger Service . After that it all becomes fuzzy. We were pretty poor back back then and I didn't get an allowance, so my best friend (also poor) and I would stand outside of the record store and beg passersby for money (ostensibly for carfare home!), until we had the $5 we needed to buy an album. After our purchase we "hopped" the elevated train (sneaked aboard) and went home with our treasure!

First music equipment we had was a tape player - and the first cassettes I was bought were ....

ELO - Discovery
Abba - Voulez Vous

The first I actually bought myself were with some Xmas vouchers ....

Police - Regatta De Blanc
Blondie - Eat To The Beat.

Unfortunately all of these have gone to the great Cassette player in the sky .......

About 3/4 years later I got a proper record player (an all in one Amstrad stack system from Comet or somewhere like that with a double tape in ... i put in half the cash & my mum & dad paid for the rest for my Birthday!)

First single: The Jam - Down In The Tube Station
First Album: (i think) - The Jam - Dig The New Breed

Still got all the Jam singles, albums, 12"'s etc etc ... and still occasionally play them (rather than the CDs).

Finally after many many years at University I got a proper job - and first purchase was, of course, a Sony system - complete with 5 disc carousel CD player!

I purchased the minimum 5 CD's (obviously to fill up the tray) three of which escape me - but were probably Greatest Hits type things - but I bought two CD's completely blind - basically on the NME's recommendation ....

The Prodigy - Xperience
Belly - Star

The first half (up to Out of Space) of the Prodigy's is still excellent but the Belly album is one of the most under-rated ever. It comes highly recommended from here.

Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge over Troubled Water" was the first album I bought with my own money. First cassette - I bought my brother Alice Cooper's "School's Out" for his birthday, knowing full well that he didn't really like Alice Cooper, so that I could "borrow" it.

Lurking somewhere in my record collection is an album by The Hello People ("The Handsome Devils" if I recall correctly). I was a big Todd Rundgren fan, and he produced this album. I spotted the record going cheap one day and brought it. I don't think I have heard a mention of the band since!

Snap!

The first album I brought was also Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge over Troubled Water". I still have it and play it now and then. In fact I still have quite a lot of vinyl and my record deck is on its last legs!

My first cassette was Joyride by Roxette.
My first CD was by Genesis. I can´t think of the title right now.

For both of those I saved my pocket money for a couple of weeks.

I, too, had an older sibling just beginning to buy albums such as the Beatles, Peter Paul & Mary, and Marianne Faithful, but the first album I bought of my own was 'The Animals on Tour' in 1965. I was 9 or 10 and the LP cost about $2.50 if I remember correctly.

My grandmother bought my older sister an album, which was probably the first one she owned. A blatant attempt to cash in on the early success of the Beatles, it was a group called 'The Buggs' and the LP cover was very similar to the 'Meet the Beatles' cover, which I'm sure is what my grandmother thought she was buying! It was horrible and we laughed until we cried, but I think I still have it.

Except for my mother's 78s, I have all our records, as everyone else gave up their turntables for cassettes and CD players. They call me 'The Keeper of the Vinyl.' It's a ponderous collection with an entire closet devoted to it and nothing else, and because of it, I have vowed never to move again.

I listen to folk music, so I still buy a vinyl LP now and again depending on the condition. A lot of the old stuff just isn't available on CD. I think it's great that some are being remastered and re-released because even though I was always very careful with my records, the sound quality wasn't always that good to begin with, and there's always some surface noise, however minor. CDs are just so much more durable and easy to handle, and you'll never hear me complain about a bonus track.
