.

  • In a wild card weekend full of lower seeds winning, George95, gtho4, Mustang, and paper_aero all came out perfect a 4/4 with 22 extra points based on the seeds of the teams that won. Of those four, the first two have both won this comp before (2014 an 2006, respectively), Mustang finished 3rd last year, and paper_aero has never been a medallist in this comp. George95 might be hoping he doesn't end up tied with gtho4 because both have the same advanced picks, and last year he ended up losing this comp on the Super Bowl tiebreakers. On the opposite end, ElfTwinkle went for all home teams and was thoroughly disappointed in the results.

  • In a strange beginning to the weekend, all four lower seeds and road teams were favored to win over their division champion counterparts. Still, all managed to turn their road trips into happy flights back home, although in very different ways.

  • Kansas City opened the playoffs with a bang, returning the opening kickoff for a 106-yard touchdown. Things would only get worse for the Texans, as QB Brian Hoyer threw 3 interceptions and lost a fumble... in the first half. Still, the Chiefs only found themselves up 13 at halftime. The second half went no better, as Kansas City scored another 17 unanswered points and won 30-0. They will face New England next Saturday.

  • Rounding out the AFC Wild Card Saturday was quite a different contest. It certainly started out similarly, with Cincinnati held scoreless in the first half with Pittsburgh up 6-0. The Steelers expanded the lead to 15 when things started going awry. Just before the end of the 3rd quarter, Ben Roethlisberger was sacked and injured his shoulder. The next drive, Cincinnati scored a touchdown to cut the lead to 15-7. Pittsburgh's backup couldn't get anything going, so Cincinnati got the ball back and hit a field goal. Once again, Pittsburgh stumbled, gave the ball back, and Cincinnati scored a touchdown to go up 16-15 after a failed 2-point conversion inside 2 minutes. Needing a drive down the field for a field goal, the Steelers threw an interception on the first play, meaning the game was in all likelihood over. Vontaze Burfict took the intercepted ball across the entire field, into the tunnel, and nearly to the locker room with 4 teammates in tow to celebrate. All was well, until Cincinnati ran 1 play trying to run out the clock, and the running back fumbled it away, and Pittsburgh suddenly had another chance. Roethlisberger went back in, bum shoulder and all, and led them slowly across midfield. Then he uncorked a long pass, and Burfict hit the defenseless receiver in the head with a vicious hit, knocking him unconscious immediately and earning a 15-yard penalty. With Pittsburgh staff on the field to tend to the receiver, Bengal Adam "Pac Man" Jones shoved a coach and earned another 15-yard penalty, putting the Steelers at the Cincinnati 17. They then kicked a field goal and won 18-16 on one of the most, if not the most, epic mental meltdowns in playoff history.

  • Seattle and Minnesota went the same general direction as the previous game, but without the injured players and dumb penalties. The temperature at game time was -6 degrees Fahrenheit, and the 3rd-coldest game in NFL history. Minnesota took home field advantage to a 9-0 lead in the 4th quarter, when Seattle came alive. The Seahawks kept a drive alive after a terrible snap to Russell Wilson and scored making it 9-7. After an Adrian Peterson fumble, they got a field goal to go up 10-9. Minnesota eventually got the ball back with under 2 minutes left, and drove down the field (albeit with the help of a penalty). With 26 seconds left, they had a 27-yard chip shot field goal to virtually win the game. However, Blair Walsh, who hit his first 3 field goals, couldn't make a 4th. The short kick was pulled so hard to the left it never had a chance of going in, and the defending NFC Champions lived to see another week.

  • If we hadn't seen everything already, Washington's first score in their attempt to be the only home victor was a safety, followed by a field goal on the ensuing drive, and then followed later by a touchdown and missed extra point. Down by the rare score of 11-0, Green Bay scored 17 straight to end the half. Washington opened the 2nd half with a touchdown to go up 18-17, but that's the last they would see of the lead. Green Bay answered with a touchdown, followed it up with another touchdown and 2-point conversion, and then topped it all off with a field goal to win 35-18.

  • Nobody lost their Super Bowl pick in this first week, but wwe84 lost his AFC Champion after Cincinnati's meltdown and ozzz2002 lost his NFC Champion after Minnesota's missed kick. Neither probably should have lost those picks, but that's why they play the game.

  • . .

You have srini701 on there twice.

I saw that the gametime temp in Minnesota was -6F.

    Story here.

Oops, fixed. srini was originally on there about 6 times since I randomly copied and pasted his line from last year to make up for all the new tippers. And it is sure enough -6, ProFootballTalk had -4 for some reason.

    .

  • Another weekend of football goes by, and now only gtho4 and paper_aero have perfect picks. Both will presumably have the same picks during the Conference Championship Round as well, since they both have Carolina and New England as their advance conference champion picks. However, gtho4 picked Carolina to finish their spectacular season as Super Bowl Champions, while paper_aero picked New England to repeat as the best team in football.

  • This week, N-Bomb and Sypher joined the top 2 with perfect picks this week, and although they both maintained their previous positions in the standings, they also made up serious ground on those in front of them. Meanwhile, Mustang was seriously hurt by missing the picks this week, and matches the low pick of the week, although still in the top 4.

  • Every game this weekend was within a touchdown, but all played out differently. Kansas City flew to New England, and the Patriots started out with a long, 11-play, 80-yard touchdown drive. The Chiefs managed a field goal in response, but midway through the 2nd quarter the Patriots put together a 98-yard drive to go up 14-3. Again, Kansas City only managed a field goal in reply. A Chiefs fumble in New England territory to open the half led to another Patriots touchdown. In the end, the Chiefs were never able to mount a real threat and went down 27-20 to the defending champions.

  • Green Bay left cold Wisconsin for Arizona warmth, and ohhhhh my did it give us a good football game. You may not have guessed it from the first half, as Arizona led 7-6 in a pedestrian matchup. Both teams opened the 2nd half with interceptions, but 6 plays later the Packers hit a touchdown and went up 13-7. A Cardinals field goal made it 13-10, and they made a stop, but gave up another interception. Their next drive would be a touchdown to make it 17-13. With 2:38 left in the game, Green Bay failed to convert a 4th down and Arizona took over deep in Packer territory while the visitors had only 1 timeout. An ill-conceived pass coupled with the timeout and 2-minute warning gave Green Bay just under 2 minutes to tie the game following an Arizona field goal. They marched down the field to the Arizona 41 yard line with 5 seconds left, and all seemed lost. Aaron Rodgers avoided the rush, threw off his back foot 60 yards... and it's caught in the end zone! Green Bay tied the game with their second last-second hail mary of the season! In overtime at 20-20, Arizona got the ball, and on the first play Larry Fitzgerald caught a pass and made several moves to go 75 yards to the Green Bay 5. Two plays later, a shovel pass to Fitzgerald ended the game with Arizona winning 26-20.

  • Carolina and Seattle did not give us quite as competitive a game, at least initially. Carolina opened with a touchdown, and 3 plays later capitalized on a poor throw with an interception return for a touchdown. After forcing a punt, they scored yet another touchdown to go up 21-0 just inside the 2nd quarter. The next play was another interception, and the Panthers earned a field goal. At halftime, it was 31-0, and nobody would blame you for turning off the game because in the last 15 seasons, teams down 31+ points were a combined 0-325 in the NFL. But that didn't stop Seattle from trying. They opened the 2nd half with a touchdown, forced a stop, and scored another touchdown. After trading punts, Seattle scored again with 6 minutes left to make it 31-21. Yet another stop and successful drive put them in field goal range and they made it 31-24, needing an onside kick to keep the game alive. However, it was to no avail and Carolina hung on to their victory.

  • Pittsburgh came into Seattle without their starting running back or #1 wide receiver, and Ben Roethlesberger nursing a hurt right shoulder (his throwing arm) from last week. Still, he managed lead a touchdown drive at the end of the first quarter to go up 7-6 on the Broncos. A couple field goals later left Pittsburgh up 10-6 at halftime. Three field goals and a quarter later, it was 13-12 Steelers with over half of the 4th quarter left. Peyton Manning finally threw it into gear, converting a 3rd and 12 for 31 yards early on, overcoming penalties and a cold Denver wind to drive for a touchdown to go up 20-13 after a 2-point conversion. Pittsburgh failed on a 4th down and Denver capitalized with a field goal. Faced with a 10-point deficit and time ticking away, the Steelers got another field goal but failed in the onside kick, sending all of the top seeds to next weekend.

  • With 43 points, gtho4 has already beaten or tied every other tipper from the last 5 years except for 2011's winner rxbigdawg, who finished with 50, aided by a 6-seed winning the Super Bowl. If Carolina wins the Super Bowl, gtho4 will beat that total with 51, and without the aid of extra points from the seed. That is not to say that he's already won, because paper_aero is still mathematically in the game.

  • Only two tippers - srini701 and CmdrK - picked both conference champions. Everyone else was tripped up by either picking New England, Arizona, Minnesota, Cincinnati, or Seattle. That is the lowest total of correct picks since 2013, when 8 tippers picked San Francisco as the NFC Champion, and absolutely nobody chose Baltimore to meet them there. Still, there are 9 live advance Super Bowl picks which will net those tippers the maximum 4 points if correct - 4 for Carolina and 5 for Denver.

  • The later game will be discussed first, because there isn't a lot to talk about. The Arizona Cardinals flew to Carolina and were physically present on the field during the game, but never actually showed up. Their first 3 possessions were all punts, 2 of them including 6 plays. On their 4th drive, they got to a 7th play, but it was a fumble. At 17-0 Carolina, the Cardinals finally put up a touchdown and forced a 3-and-out, but promptly muffed the punt and Carolina scored again off of it. Arizona was able to cut it down to 19 points (2 touchdowns, two 2-point conversions, and a field goal) in the 3rd quarter, but 15 points later, Carolina topped it off 49-15 to waltz into the Super Bowl.

  • On the other side, could the last matchup between Peyton Manning and Tom Brady go any other way? Manning, likely playing his last season following injuries and questions about his arm strength, led the Broncos against his nemesis and 4-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady and the Patriots. It started perfectly for Denver, forcing a punt and then Manning connected for his first touchdown pass of the day to make it 7-0. After consecutive 3-and-outs, Manning fumbled, giving Brady the ball at the Denver 22. Two plays later, the Patriots were in the end zone, but kicker Steven Gostkowski, who had made 523 consecutive extra points (albeit most from much shorter prior to the 2015 rule change making extra points 32-yard attempts) coming into the game, missed wide to the right, leaving it at 7-6. After a Denver punt, the unflappable Tom Brady threw an interception, and their momentum was lost. Three plays later, Manning threw his second touchdown pass, making it 14-6. The Patriots responded with a field goal, and just before the half was over Denver would do the same, making it 17-9 at halftime.

  • New England began the second half with another field goal, pulling within 5 points. Several unsuccessful drives later, Denver would match it and go up 20-12. With 10 minutes left, New England began a long drive, and made it to the Denver 16 where they faced 4th and 1. Rather than try for a field goal which would put them a touchdown away from leading, they went for it, hoping to tie the game at that point. Brady instead threw incomplete, and Denver got it back. Three plays later, Denver gave it back, and New England marched down the field again, this time 4th and 6 at the Denver 14. If they had kicked a field goal before, they could have here as well and made it 20-18, but now with only 2:25 left had to go for it, and once again Brady failed to find a receiver in the end zone. Denver once again gave it back 3 plays later, and with 1:52 left New England began driving one last time. Facing 4th down for the 3rd time, they could be kicking a field goal to go up 21-20, but had to convert a touchdown here. Finally, at 4th and goal from the 4, Brady connected with Rob Gronkowski. Now, thanks to the missed extra point in the first quarter, the Patriots had to go for 2. The final throw into the end zone was intercepted by Denver, ending any chance of a Patriots repeat, and setting up the possibility that Peyton Manning's final game would be Super Bowl 50.

  • gtho4 was almost perfect through the first 3 rounds (except for 1 advance pick - which he went against last round), and therefore never left the top spot. That didn't change this week, where despite taking Carolina with his advance and regular pick, he held on to his lead and coasted to a gold medal finish. Congratulations!

  • Coming into the final week, only 2 tippers could have won. gtho4 could have guaranteed his victory no matter the result if he had just picked Denver, since (as we saw) no Denver advance picker could have caught up anyway, the closest Carolina advanced picker (George95) would have still ended up two points short, and paper_aero, with no live advance pick, could only match gtho4's 4 points (from either picking Denver or his advance pick) with the regular pick. Alternatively, paper_aero, after seeing that gtho4 chose Carolina, could have picked Denver since he was only 3 points back and a Denver victory would put him over the top. Instead, he picked Carolina and ended up in 3rd as srini701 leapfrogged from 4th to 2nd.

  • srini701 and paper_aero actually tied in total points, but srini701 was all behind Denver, and a Bronco field goal on their opening drive gave him the first score tiebreaker. The ties for 5th between George95 and themonarch and for 10th between N-Bomb and Howie72 were broken on the same tiebreaker with the former winning. However, the three-way tie for 7th went much further: illiniman14 and Mustang both picked Carolina for first score and leader at halftime (which didn't happen), and illiniman14 was only 7 points off of the total points while Mustang was 15 off, expecting a higher-scoring game. Meanwhile ozfei did not lodge her picks and finished behind the other two. dg_dave also edged out Dizart by 1 point on the 3rd tiebreaker for 13th.

  • The game itself was either a defensive struggle or a dud. Denver opened with a field goal, and on Carolina's second possession the Denver pass rush began what would be a common theme in pressure on Cam Newton. Eventual MVP Von Miller stripped the ball away, resulting in a recovered fumble in the end zone for a 10-0 Denver lead. Carolina was able to answer with a touchdown, and Denver replied with another field goal, when the game started getting ugly. Carolina fumbled on the next drive, but Peyton Manning threw it right back to the Panthers 5 plays later. At the start of the 2nd half, Carolina missed a field goal off of the upright, and Denver added a field goal. Carolina was able to get down towards the red zone, but Cam Newton threw an interception, giving it right back. After matching punts, Manning fumbled the ball away, and Carolina was able to take advantage with a field goal, making it 16-10. Three 3-and-outs later, Newton fumbled again, and made a fairly lackadaisical effort to get it back, resulting in Denver ball at the 4 yard line. Needless to say, they punched it in and converted the 2-point conversion to make it 24-10. Another sack (Denver had 6 on the day) made Carolina face 4th and 24 on the next drive, and despite being down 24 with almost 2 minutes left, decided to punt, and the game was basically over. The score remained the same and Peyton Manning likely ends his career with a Super Bowl victory in Denver.
