Australian Open 2016

The first Grand Slam of the year starts Monday, January 18. Can anybody stop Serena Williams or Novak Djokovic? Will we see a resurgent Nadal and Federer at the top? The draws will be out on Friday, January 15.

gtho4 (women's section) and srini701 (men's section) will look to defend their titles in our FT comps. This will be the 11th running of the comp here, and in this time nobody has ever retained their title in the men's section!

Will it be your turn this year? Sign up here if you are interested. Separate threads will be posted once the draws are out to post your tips.

  • The turbulence in the women's game continues. We have yet another first-time Grand Slam champion as Angelique Kerber becomes the first German in 17 years to win any Grand Slam title (22 years at the Australian Open) after the "one and only". An even better stat than that was the run of the Briton Johanna "Who" Konta, who becomes the first British woman in 33 years to progress to a Grand Slam semifinal, since Jo Durie in 1983 shocked
  • Based on form going into the championships, Azarenka and Radwanska were the favorites, and of course Serena was always among the contenders, but somehow none of us managed to look at Kerber. And she almost didn't make it past the first round too, saving match point against Misaki Doi sick before embarking on a remarkable run all the way to the title! As a result of her fantastic run, she also moves up to number 2 in the rankings now.
  • In a remarkable coincidence in our own comp here, the winning score (54) is the exact one as a year back....just that gtho4 and srini701 switched places....illiniman14 and Howie72 also finished at their exact spots from 2015! N-Bomb finished second (it was wwe84 last year) on a better tie-break score against illini.
  • ozzz2002 was back to his business of going for long shots to make it, but it didn't come off this time, leaving him with the first spoon of the year in the Grand Slams...
  • Congrats then to srini701, N-Bomb and illiniman14 for getting the first medals for 2016! ... This is the 5th time that srini701 is winning the women's section of the Australian Open here.

What's the story line in the men's section going to be? We'll know soon...

Edit Reason: added number of wins for srini

  • Andy Murray would probably rue one day for being a contemporary of Novak Djokovic crazy Any other era and he may probably have won more Slams than he has to show....He just lost his 5th Australian Open final (4th to the Djoker) and this time, he can't even say he had a "chance" grin Djokovic continues his stranglehold on Slam titles, winning the 11th of his career...Anybody thinks he can win a Grand Slam in 2016?? confused
  • Of the rest, well, Roger Federer was majestic till he ran into Djokovic, Milos Raonic was very good all the way till the semifinals where too he had a chance but for an injury, and no unseeded player made it to the last 8....tells you the men's game is a lot more predictable than the women's!
  • Riding that "predictability" factor all the way to a stupendous win here is ElfTwinkle, who almost picked the card...she only missed 2 quarterfinal spots...her winning percentage (72.56% of the "perfect score") makes a mockery of srini701's winning percentage in the women's section (27.8%, which in ANY exam in India is deemed "failed"....we need a minimum of 35% just to qualify for a "pass" grin ) ...The Elf is BACK and she means business in 2016...watch out folks tongue
  • Howie72 and paper_aero complete the podium, thus making it 6 different medallists for us in the first 2 comps of the year...way to go! This marks the 12th straight year of the comp here where the men's title could not be defended....any other comp with a similar musical chair of champs here?? confused
  • ozzz2002 again went for some exotic picks (Thiem and Sousa) and had to settle for the cellar....
  • The next Grand Slam comp is the Roland Garros in May but we have the team tennis comp starting this weekend...
