Australian Open 2016The first Grand Slam of the year starts Monday, January 18. Can anybody stop Serena Williams or Novak Djokovic? Will we see a resurgent Nadal and Federer at the top? The draws will be out on Friday, January 15. gtho4 (women's section) and srini701 (men's section) will look to defend their titles in our FT comps. This will be the 11th running of the comp here, and in this time nobody has ever retained their title in the men's section! Will it be your turn this year? Sign up here if you are interested. Separate threads will be posted once the draws are out to post your tips. Australian Open-2016: Women's singles; Tues Jan 19Australian Open-2016: Men's singles; Tues Jan 19

- The turbulence in the women's game continues. We have yet another first-time Grand Slam champion as Angelique Kerber becomes the first German in 17 years to win any Grand Slam title (22 years at the Australian Open) after the "one and only". An even better stat than that was the run of the Briton Johanna "Who" Konta, who becomes the first British woman in 33 years to progress to a Grand Slam semifinal, since Jo Durie in 1983
- Based on form going into the championships, Azarenka and Radwanska were the favorites, and of course Serena was always among the contenders, but somehow none of us managed to look at Kerber. And she almost didn't make it past the first round too, saving match point against Misaki Doi
before embarking on a remarkable run all the way to the title! As a result of her fantastic run, she also moves up to number 2 in the rankings now. - In a remarkable coincidence in our own comp here, the winning score (54) is the exact one as a year back....just that gtho4 and srini701 switched places....illiniman14 and Howie72 also finished at their exact spots from 2015! N-Bomb finished second (it was wwe84 last year) on a better tie-break score against illini.
- ozzz2002 was back to his business of going for long shots to make it, but it didn't come off this time, leaving him with the first spoon of the year in the Grand Slams...
- Congrats then to srini701, N-Bomb and illiniman14 for getting the first medals for 2016! ... This is the 5th time that srini701 is winning the women's section of the Australian Open here.
What's the story line in the men's section going to be? We'll know soon...

Edited by srini701 (Mon Feb 01 2016 01:28 AM) Edit Reason: added number of wins for srini
