That makes sense, I suppose, since you must be further from the coast when going anti-clockwise.

Yes of course, so the opposite would apply to countries who drive on the right hand side.

I'm not quite sure 900 metres will make any difference. Australia's coastline is apparently about 25,760 kilometres long... (source: CIA World Factbook)
