Team Tennis 2016 -- February to November 2016This will be the THIRD running of the Team tennis competition (Fed Cup and Davis Cup). 14 people took part last year (13 in 2014). srini701 starts as the defending champion ( Howie72 and illiniman14 were also on podium). N-Bomb had won the inaugural edition of this comp. We will only tip the countries we think will win each tie from the list I will provide before each round. Only issue is: The comp will only have 7 rounds, but will run almost the entire year! The schedule for 2016 is:1. Fed Cup First round: 6-7 February 2016 (advance pick for winner) 2. Davis Cup First round : 4-6 March 2016 3. Fed Cup semis & Group 1 and 2 playoffs: 16-17 April 2016 4. Davis Cup WG quarterfinals, Group 1 2nd round: 15 Jul - 17 Jul 2016 (advance pick winner) 5. Davis Cup WG Semis + Playoffs: 16 Sep - 18 Sep 2016 6. Fed Cup final: 12-13 November 2016 7. Davis Cup finals: 25-27 November 2016 Again, we shall have the competition only if there are a minimum of 10 people ready to play (and last) it. Please let me know your interest by signing up here. Welcome to the 3rd edition of the Team tennis comp. We attracted 14 people this year (it was 13 last year)...BxBarracuda dropped out, but LeoDaVinci returns, and we welcome ElfTwinkle to the comp....here's hoping all 14 will last the 7 rounds spread all the way till November in the comp and not get bored after a couple of rounds
Some major surprises in the very opening round this year, as a "Miracle in Moscow" saw rank outsiders Netherlands, with NO player in the top 100 of the rankings and returning to the top tier of the Fed Cup for the first time since 1998, toppled the home team and 2015 finalists Russia (3 players in top 30) taking a 3-0 lead after the first 3 singles  .... Not ONE of us picked the Dutch to win away  That loss of Russia knocked out 6 of us for the "advanced picks" for this year's Fed Cup champ
Germany at home to Switzerland was another big surprise, as the Swiss led by the teenager Belinda Bencic knocked out the favorites....2 of us picked the Swiss here, but Germany's defeat saw another 3 of us lose our advance pick for the champ
Defending Champs Czech Republic were on the verge of losing too, after Petra Kvitova lost BOTH her singles ties for the very first time in her Fed Cup career....but Karolina Pliskova saved the Czechs some blushes, winning both her singles and then helping win the deciding doubles too against Romania....the Czech (picked by the remaining 5 of us here to be champs in 2016) may be in semis, but will they be favorites against the Swiss?
A resurgent France is also through to the semis, and after knocking Italy out comfortably, will fancy their chances against the Dutch in a home semis. In World Group II, Samantha Stosur won both her singles as Australia upstaged Slovakia, USA and Spain both had comfortable wins, while Belarus scraped past Canada.
paper_aero wins the first HoF for this year with 6/8 picks (plus a sole pick as well)....a bunch of us got 5/8 picks next, while ElfTwinkle is finding her feet in the comp...gtho4 decided to work his way up this year, and after going against the grain in all his picks (bar Australia), will start the comp from the cellar.
The next round of comp will be the Davis Cup first round ties in the first week of March. Please remember to come back and lodge your tips before March 3.

maybe I read them backwards, or was looking at the men's, lol LOL...I did too...and so picked Russia...only to have Miss Sharapova sit on the bench the whole weekend...

It turned out to be a wonderful weekend of tennis as Davis Cup action around the world proved playing for one's country often brings out the best of many players....The top 2 players in the world Djokovic and Murray both battled over 5 sets each on Sunday to help their nations advance. Murray again won all three points for his country, as defending champions Great Britain continued their impressive march in the competition. Murray's (and Britain's) resilience and streak will be tested in July when they take on former champions Serbia in the quarters. Serbia set up a blockbuster quarterfinal tie with Great Britain after edging Kazakhstan 3-2 in a titanic tussle after being 1-2 down.
USA had to wait till Sunday too before winning against Australia, Czech Republic and Croatia also won through on the last rubbers and Argentina beat Poland thanks to one player. David Goffin's heroics couldn't help Belgium, while France and Italy had it real easy.
illiniman14 and N-Bomb almost picked the card here and for their stellar efforts, win a bonus point. We now have a 3-way tie at the top with paper_aero having another impressive round. Howie72 and George95 were the others who had a good weekend amongst us.
LeoDaVinci and dg_dave find themselves with a spoon each despite picking 10 of the matches....as a group we picked 174/224 matches for a very impressive 77.6% rate...Nice 
The next round of comp will be the Fed Cup World group Semis and Playoffs in the second week of April. Please remember to come back and lodge your tips before April 15.

Leo and my 10/16 is not the highest spoon score, as I remember a few years ago I had a comp where the Spooner got 11/15, or 73.33%!

Only one team was unanimously picked by us all here in our tips this round and for quite a while it was touch and go for us all France had to twice come from behind in their Fed Cup semifinal against Netherlands, eventually getting their noses in front only when it mattered most, in the fifth and final rubber - and there also they had to come from a set down to win! France eventually moved into their first Fed Cup final in 11 years and we all got our 2 points
In the other semifinal, the Czech Republic moved into a remarkable fifth final in six years, with a deciding win the final doubles rubber against the Switzerland.
In the play off matches, Viktoria Azarenka led Belarus past Russia, Spain had it surprisingly easy against Italy, Romania was no match for Germany, Yanina Wickmayer took Belgium past Serbia, and after dumping them out of the Davis Cup, the USA dished out a similar result to Australia here too.
srini701 picked the lot here and with the resulting bonus point for perfect picks, moved into podium position behind illiniman14. illiniman14 and Dizart also missed only one match each, while gtho4 was not so lucky at the other end....He struggled in the earlier Fed Cup round too, back in February...
The next round of comp will be the Davis Cup Cup World group Quarterfinals and Group I and II matches in July. Please remember to come back and lodge your tips before July 15.

All the 4 away teams won in the World Group Quarter-finals! A rarity in team sports these days....Defending champions Great Britain proved they are more than just Andy Murray, but Serbia weren't much without Novak Djokovic ... Argentina got some revenge back against Italy for last year's loss at the same stage, France were too strong for Czech Republic who were without Tomas Berdych, and USA blew a 2-0 lead to go down at home to Croatia. Britain hosts Argentina, while Croatia plays France at home in the semi-finals in September.
There were easy wins for Spain, Russia, India and Slovakia in the group I playoff matches. The draw has been made for the playoffs and will figure in our next round here.
ElfTwinkle had an outstanding round here, missing only 2 matches and she moves up the table with that. George95 did not have it so good and slips down the ladder a bit. LeoDaVinci and dg_dave forgot to lodge tips this round

It turned out to be a fascinating weekend of tennis around the world. Defending champions Great Britain knocked itself out at home, going down 0-2 to Argentina after day 1. Del Potro was in the thick of action again, beating Andy Murray first up....And despite Del Potro not playing the fifth rubber, Argentina ensured they would enter a fourth final in the last 10 years. ElfTwinkle actually picked the Argentine win!
They will meet Croatia there in the finals in November, after the Croats, led by Marin Cilic, knocked the favorites French out. So we have a Croatia-Argentina final, and we can all breathe easy on 3 points in the final round....none of us picked either of the finalists in our advance picks
There was plenty of action the World Group play offs too where we fared better as a group...we picked 4 of the 8 ties and another couple of ties had only 1 miss and a seventh tie had only 2 missing out. Only the Uzbekistan-Switzerland tie had us divided...
N-Bomb and ElfTwinkle both picked HoFs with 13/16 points but each got 2 ties wrong (we get perfect pick bonus points for picking 13/14 or 14/14 ties). illiniman14 is in sole lead with N-Bomb chasing him after srini701 takes home a spoon and falls back...Dizart is very much in the thick of things too, with just the 2 finals left for the year...
The next round of comp will be the finals of the Fed Cup Cup in November. Please remember to come back and lodge your tips before November 11 .

It turned out to be a very closely fought Fed Cup finals but at the end of the day, the result turned out to be what most people expected (unlike the polls in the US)....Czech Republic won the title for the 5th time, and for the 2nd consecutive year through the final doubles tie.
Karolina Pliskova (Czech) beat Kristina Mladenovic 6-3, 4-6, 16-14 in the first singles of the tie, Caroline Garcia (France) beat Petra Kvitova 7-6, 6-3 in the second singles to even the tie at 1-1 at the end of day 1, then Karolina Pliskova/Barbora Strycova beat Caroline Garcia/Kristina Mladenovic 7-5, 7-5 in the final doubles tie after the two countries again shared the reverse singles.
illiniman14 seems to be picking up a knack of forgetting to lodge tips in the final rounds of my competitions He did it again and as a result, slips of the pole position to leave our competition here very delicately poised.....did he do it on purpose to induce more suspense out here
Sypher also did not lodge tips this round, but had picked the Czech to win the comp back in round 1...so he gets points for the same. LeoDaVinci did not have a good round and he also did not have any advance points to score off, so he goes home with a golden duck to slip into the cellar of our comp.
Dizart was one of the 5 who picked the Czech as his advance picks and that propels him into the lead in our comp. paper_aero and dg_dave had the best round (both only missed the score at the end of the first day) and this helps the former to vault into second position.
NONE of us have any advance picks to score in the final round, and the top 6 all have a chance to land the medals when the final round is played out. The Davis Cup Cup finals is on November 25-27. So please do remember to come back and lodge your tips before November 24 , especially illiniman14 .

Croatia were 1 set away from winning their second Davis Cup title....After the tie-was evenly poised 1-1 after the opening day singles, they won the doubles and Cilic led Del Potro two sets to love....and then Del Potor roared back! He staged a remarkable come back to win the 4th tie in 5 sets in a match lasting close to 5 hours. Federico Delbonis then swept aside Ivo Karlovic in straight sets to instead give Argentina their first ever Davis Cup title!
Argentina, which had previously lost 4 finals, thus becomes only the 15th country in the 116 years of the competition to win the most prestigious team title in tennis.
srini701 picked the Argentines to win (purely because this year they won all their matches on the road, in Europe...and had Del Potro ) .... this pick helps him take the HoF and tie Dizart on points at the top. A better tie-break (2 HoF against none for Dizart) gives srini701 the title in our comp for 2016.
3 people tied for the 3rd spot....Howie72 had no HoF and so he dropped off. N-Bomb and paper_aero both had 2 Hofs, but while N-Bomb won 1 bonus point throughout the season, paper had 2. That helped paper_aero take the bronze for 2016. Commiserations to Howie and N-Bomb
illiniman14 could have saved us all the last minute tie-breaks and landed himself a podium spot too...well, let's not get into that again...ozzz2002 and George95 shared the last spoons for the year, while gtho4 climbed off the cellar, again, thanks to a better tie-break over LeoDaVinci.
