Tipping Comp

English Rugby League

-------------------------------------

The rules:
  • Pick a winner and score a point.
  • Pick a draw and score a point (draws are very rare).
  • One bonus point for perfect score.
  • Default is equal to the wooden spoon score.
  • Ties - Final placings will be decided on HoF/WS differential and then, if equal,
total HoF awards (and then total number of bonus points, if required).
---------------------------------------

N-Bomb won in 2015 followed by Howie72 and srini701.

The first round kicks-off next week on Thursday 4th February.

  • Super League has returned for another season with last year's grand final winning Leeds opening the season at home to Warrington but it did not go as they planned, a try 12 minutes from the end gave the visiting Wolves a 2 point lead and they escaped with the win after a late Rhino's penalty went wide. Hull FC and the new recruits showed they could be a contender this season by comfortably beating Salford at home in a try fest, the winning margin being big enough for them to take the lead in the standings after the first round. St Helens started their season with a convincing win over Huddersfield to avenge the opening round of the 2013 season when the Giants thumped them by 36 points. Wigan opened their account with a hard fought narrow win in the rain and mud over the visiting Catalan Dragons, thankful for two early tries before the conditions resulted in numerous errors. Castleford look set to open with a victory away to Hull KR until a late try took Rovers to 2 points behind, the conversion from the sideline tied it up with the last kick of the game. A new look Wakefield took an early lead over Widnes but it was the Vikings that raided the Wildcats tryline enough to take the victory to give them the vital 2 points in the standings.
  • In an amazing coincidence the Fun Trivia Super League tipping competition began at the same time as the Super League competition. We have 13 runners this season, the same number as last season with the only change being a welcome back to ElfTwinkle who takes the place vacated by BxBarracuda. Will N-Bomb defend his title or can Sypher avoid defaulting and take the title after finishing last in 2015?
  • Draws are rare in rugby league but it did not take long for the first one to occur this season and not surprisingly no one was brave enough to predict. However we all managed to tip the Hull FC victory. George95 earns the first bonus point of the competition for somehow picking the defending champion Leeds to lose at home. Not quite so clairvoyant was srini701 who failed to tip the St Helens win and George95 showed his crystal ball is not quite working all of the time by thinking the Catalan Dragons would upset Wigan away. We did manage 48/78 or 61.53% which is a tad better then the A-League.
  • Round 1 saw 9 weekly winners and 4 spoons being awarded so we all walked away with something for a nice friendly beginning. George95's bonus point sees him take a 1 point lead into Round 2 and I do believe there is still a long way to go so will he be able to defend his lead?

  • Exactly one year ago St Helens trounced Salford by 52-6, this time the score looked like it could be a repeat but in Salford's favour as they raced out to a 32-6 halftime lead but they slowed down in the second half to only win by 44-10. For the second week in a row Wigan struggled but thanks to a late try they triumphed over Huddersfield to make it 2 narrows wins out of 2. The Catalans Dragons fortress at home was well and truly breached as Hull FC ran in 7 tries to give them their first win in France since 2010. Warrington Wolves also made it 2 from 2 with a comfortable victory over a depleted Hull KR side, the scoreline blowing out at the end. The reigning champion Leeds lost back to back to begin a season for the first time in 16 years, it was not even close as Widnes put on 56 points against them, a result that almost no one saw coming. Wakefield's new look team is not quite gelling as they would want as they went down easily to Castleford but it is still early days.
  • Sypher and PaulE missed the first match but it mattered little as they both said they would have got it wrong along with the other 11 of us.
  • The aforementioned match that none of us tipped was the Salford win over St Helens though we all thought Castleford would beat last year's bottom placed team. I am not sure how she did it (was it astute knowledge or just blind luck?) but ElfTwinkle was the only one that saw Widnes' thrashing of defending champion Leeds. We did manage 41/76 or 53.95%, dropping to 52.56% if we take into account the two missed tips.
  • The Widnes result was crucial for ElfTwinkle to start the competition with back to back weekly wins, the only one to tip 5/6. On the other hand, wwe84 starts with back to back spoons and is joined by illiniman14 in getting just 2/6.
  • ElfTwinkle takes over sole possession of the lead which proves just how well known this sport is in Canada. At the bottom, wwe84 takes over sole possesion of last but this should change a bit over the next few weeks as things settle down.

  • The second World Club Series between the top 3 sides in Super League and NRL got underway with St Helens hosting the Sydney Roosters. It did not start well for the home team Super League sides as the Saints went down by 26 points though if you listened to their coach the score was "not a true reflection of the game" and "if we play anything remotely like that in Super League we will be very good." It got worse as Wigan were then handed a 30 point hiding by the Brisbane Broncos in another clinical display of finishing. This left the Super League champion Leeds to salvage some British pride but it was not to be as the NRL champion North Queensland Cowboys put in a dominant second half display to demolish the Rhinos and win the Word Club Challenge. Three big wins by the visiting sides showed the dominance of the southern hemisphere clubs. Just 2 Super League matches were played with Wakefield picking up their first win of the season away to Hull KR by just 2 points and Salford carried on from last week when racing out to a 22-0 after 32 minutes, in the end they just held on after a spirited Widnes comeback.
  • We all did not think Wakefield had a chance of beating Hull KR away but we were proved wrong and illiniman14 was the only one to have faith, albeit erroneous, in Leeds. We did manage 35/65 or 53.85%, our lowest success rate of tips entered in the first 3 weeks.
  • 4/5 was enough for paper_aero, Dizart, N-Bomb and Howie72 to pick up a weekly win. On the other hand, illiniman showed to much faith in the Super League sides in the World CLub Challange and ended up with 0/5 and the first goose egg of the season.
  • We have changes at the top again with Sypher, paper_aero, Dizart, N-Bomb and Howie72 all overtaking ElfTwinkle and grabbing a share of the lead. At the bottom, illiniman14's goose egg sees him take over the bottom rung of the ladder.

  • Castleford maintained their unbeaten start to the season but they left it late against Hull FC, a penalty levelling it up in the 73rd minute before a drop goal a minute later gave them the lead. Hull threw everything at them including the kitchen sink in the last couple of minutes but an intercept try sowed it up for the visiting Tigers right on full time. Once again Wigan found a way to win a tight match, a try 4 minutes from time denying Salford a chance of securing their first win at the DW Stadium. St Helens were behind at half time to Hull KR but a dominant second half broke their 8 match losing streak at Hull KR and left Rovers without a win to start the season. It was more comfortable for Warrington as the Wolves raced out to an early lead against Wakefield which was never threatened, the home side leaping to the top of the standings on points difference. A relieved Catalans side earned their first win of the season, at home to the defending champions but had to withstand a gallant Leeds comeback to win by 4 points giving the Rhinos their 3rd loss in 3 games this season (4 if you count the World Club Series loss last week). Widnes continued their superb start to the season when raiding Huddersfield, the Vikings reclaiming the Super League lead that Warrington held for 24 hours and leaving the Giants also winless.
  • srini701 was running on default fuel this week.
  • We had our best tipping week of the season with 49/72 or 68.05% thanks largely to 3 matches we all tipped correctly - the Saint Helens, Warrington and Wigan victories. An honourable mention to Dizart and ElfTwinkle for picking Castleford to win away at Hull FC.
  • Four more weekly winners with wwe84, Dizart, ElfTwinkle and George95 all scoring 5/6. Spoons this week went to Sypher, ozzz2002 and gtho4 with 3/6.
  • Dizart managed to disentangle himself and claim a solo lead in the standings by 1 point over a group of 4. At the bottom, illiniman14 drops to 2 points behind a group of 4.

  • Salford will be wondering what happened, they were 28-12 ahead at half time at home to Warrington and ready to bank 2 competition points but the Wolves decided to ruin the party and drew level at 30-30 only to miss a penalty that would have given them the win. They got the ball back from the restart and with the final hooter sounding a drop goal attempt went over to give the visitors a remarkable comeback victory. It was just as tight at the end for Wigan as they let slip a 14 point lead at Hull FC to trail by 4 with 8 minutes to go but a late try and 2 drop goals saw them squeak home to remain unbeaten. In the surprising clash of the bottom 2 teams it was Leeds that dug deeper to beat Huddersfield in a match that was true to the form book as both teams struggled. It was in 1992 that Castleford last beat St Helens away and they were looking good to change that when ahead at half time but it was not to be as the Saints ran out 6 point winners. Widnes continued their good start to the season to remain unbeaten after accounting for an injury depleted Hull KR side. After only winning twice away last season, Catalans opened their travelling account with a comfortable win over Wakefield after racing out to a point-a-minute 26-0 lead and surviving a spirited Wildcats comeback.
  • PaulE missed the Salford v Warrington match.
  • We seem to be settling into the tipping season as we went 63/77 this week or a very impressive 83.11%, every game reaching double figures in correct tips.
  • We get our first perfect week with 4 of us going 6/6 and earning a bonus point in the process - paper_aero, Dizart, N-Bomb and Howie72 being the weekly winners. We all went over 50% but it was wwe84, illiniman14, George95, Sypher and PaulE that earned spoons with 4/6 (or 4/5 in PaulE's case).
  • 4 of the top 5 went perfect so there was no change at the top other than ElfTwinkle dropping 2 points behind, Dizart maintaining a 1 point lead. No change at the bottom either as both wwe84 and illiniman scored the same.

  • Widnes are turning into the Leicester City (football/soccer) of rugby league, not expected to challenge for the title but surprising everyone, they left Hull FC shellshocked after destroying them with a 9 try blitz to remain atop the standings. Wakefield's coach resigned during the week and they followed this with a hiding from St Helens, it was all over by half time with the Saints 30-0 up. The first rematch of last year's grand final saw Wigan run away in the second half to gain revenge after their loss to Leeds in the title decider and remain unbeaten. Catalans let a lead slip at home to Warrington and went down by 10 points, the Wolves sowing it up in the last minute with a converted try to also remain unbeaten. Huddersfield earned their first win of the season by comfortably beating fellow strugglers, Hull KR. Josh Carney returned to Castleford for the first time since leaving on a season long loan to play for Salford and was sin-binned after just 5 minutes, he came back to score 2 vital tries and earn Salford a hard fought victory.
  • Another good tipping week saw us record 56/78 or 71.79%, helped by perfect picks for the St Helens and Wigan victories. One match was tipped solo and wwe84 earned the honours for knowing Salford would win away to Castleford.
  • Thanks to his Salford tip, wwe84 went perfect for the round with a bonus point heading his way, he jumps from 12th to a tie for 6th as a result. It did not go quite as well for ozzz2002 as for some strange reason most of his picks decided to lose their matches and as a result, gave him a spoon with 2/6.
  • The 4 leaders all scored the same so no change at the top. At the bottom, ozzz2002 gets dragged into the mire after wwe84's perfect round and illiman14's 5/6, he joins illiniman14 on the last rung of the ladder.

  • The biggest test yet for Widnes when they travelled to Wigan who had not lost at home for 21 months. The home side were ahead 8-0 at half time and it was looking like the unbeaten streak would continue but the visiting Vikings showed their start to the season is no fluke as they mounted a spirited comeback to take the victory. A few moments of fortune (a try from a speculative kick after a dropped ball, a try awarded despite calls for obstruction and a try from a pass that looked forward) enabled Hull FC to get back into the winner's circle as they accounted for Wakefield. Leeds jumped out to a 16-0 lead over St Helens after 11 minutes but the Saints stormed back to take the lead only to concede a try just before half time. The Rhinos held on in the second half to record a much needed win. A devastating first half saw Warrington ahead of Castlefield by 38-0, it was slightly better for the Tigers after the break as they ony lost the second half by 18-12 but this will be little comfort to them. Who says Catalans cannot win away? Maybe everyone was still thinking that when they let an early 12-0 lead slip away to a 12-20 half time deficit. A sending off for a high tackle in the 54th minutes hurt Huddersfield as the Dragons ran riot in the second 40 minutes to run out big winners in the end. Hull KR enjoyed a huge 30-6 half time lead over Salford but in the end had to withstand a tremendous fight back to record their victory in a 12-try feast.
  • Two matches were tipped by everyone (the Hull FC and Warrington wins) to give us 26 correct tips but the other 4 matches only contributed 10 correct tips, giving us 36/78 or just 46.15%. One match was tipped solo and ozzz2002 earned the honours for being confident in his belief that Hull KR would beat Salford.
  • The weekly winners were srini701 and ElfTwinkle who found that just 4/6 was enough to get their names in lights, a first weekly win for srini701 and a 4th for ElfTwinkle. It was much duller for illiniman14 (4th), gtho4 (2nd), N-Bomb (1st), Howie72 (1st) and PaulE (3rd) who all picked up spoons for tipping 2/6.
  • Dizart maintains a 1 point lead at the top while ElfTwinkle climbs into a share for 2nd place, forcing N-Bomb and Howie72 off the podium. At the bottom, illiniman14's spoon sees him take back sole possession of the bottom run of the ladder.

  • Castleford ensured Leeds are still without an away win this season after scoring the only second half try in the 74th minute to overturn a 2 point half time deficit. Chris Chester took charge of Wakefield for the first time in a Super League match and emerged victorious after defeating struggling Huddersfield at home, leaving the Giants languishing at the bottom of the table. For the second week in a row Widnes travelled to an unbeaten team but this time it was the Vikings that jumped out to an early 10-0 lead only to go down to Warrington by 18 points to relinquish the lead in the standings. Hull KR looked to be cruising in the 217th Hull Derby when leading Hull FC at home by 20 points with less than 20 minutes remaining but it was the visitors who stole it with 22 unanswered points. Catalans continued their much improved road form with their first win at Salford in 5 years, basic errors costing the home team big time. A 10 minute spell in the first half where Wigan scored 3 tries was enough to condemn their arch rivals, St Helens, to a first home loss of the season and keep up the pressure on Warrington and Widnes. Wigan have not lost to the Saints on Good Friday since 2009.
  • No games had a perfect tipping record as PaulE tipped Widnes over Warrington and ElfTwinkle tipped Hull KR over Hull FC and much to their dismay are left ruing these decisions. Every other game was tipped correctly by at least 4 people to give us a strike rate of 42/78 or 53.84%, not a lot better than last round.
  • A second weekly win in the last 3 weeks has seen wwe84 rocket further up the standings to a share of 4th, after round 5 he was in 12th, this round he went 5/6. Two of the leaders on the podium, Dizart and ElfTwinkle earned their first spoons of the season and were joined by ozzz2002 and Paul E with 2/6.
  • Dizart's spoon sees paper_aero overtake him for the solo lead in the standings by 1 point, N-Bomb did not like being off the podium so leaps back over ElfTwinkle into a share for 2nd. At the bottom, ozzz2002 enjoyed illiniman14's company so much he decided to join him back on the bottom rung of the ladder.

  • The lead changed 6 times between Huddersfield and Salford but in the end it was the visiting Red Devils that left with the spoils and kept the Giants at the bottom of the table. Hull FC ended Warrington's unbeaten start to the season when a try 5 minutes from the end earned them an entertaining victory. Wakefield finished at the bottom of the standings last year while Leeds won it all so of course Wakefield travelled to Leeds and won their first match there since 2007 thanks to a try 2 minutes before full time. Leeds have now lost 6 of their first 8 matches. St Helens returned to winning ways with a 4 try to 2 victory at a lethargic Widnes. Catalans moved into the top 4 with a comfortable win at home to Castleford and are showing everyone they will be a danger this year. A severely depleted Hull KR shocked Wigan to lead 10-4 at half time but could not keep up the effort as the Warriors ran away in the second half.
  • We all thought Wigan would be too good for Hull KR and it proved to be the case. However, not one of us thought Warington or Leeds would lose. Sypher went for the Castleford upset but Catalans would have none of it. All up we went 37/78 or 47.43%.
  • A solo weekly win for our leader paper_aero with 4/6 while Sypher, Dizart and ElfTwinkle took home the wooden spoons with 2/6.
  • wwe84 climbs to his highest spot all season in a share for 3rd while Sypher does the opposite and drops to his lowest place of 10th.
  • Thanks to his weekly win, paper_aero doubles his lead to 2 points over N-Bomb while Dizart drops back into a share for 3rd. No change at the bottom as both ozzz2002 and illiniman14 went 3/6 to remain on the bottom rung.

  • Last time Leeds and Hull KR met it ended in humiliation for Hull KR as they went down 50-0, this time they travelled to Leeds and heaped more misery on the Rhinos by emerging on the winning side by 30-10. The other Hull team did it much harder but they still left St Helens with the victory after a 45m field goal 4 minutes from full time won it. Three tries in a 7 minute first half spell was enough to give Warington the advantage they needed to beat Wigan at Wigan and move 2 points clear at the top of the standings. Wakefield's revival under new coach, Chris Chester, continued as they accounted for Salford to record 3 wins in a row for the first time since 2013. Catalans went one better with a 4th successive victory but it was a battle to beat back the Widnes Viking's raid across the channel. Castleford held on to beat bottom place Huddersfield by 4 points, the visitors now having lost 8 of their first 9 matches.
  • No game was tipped by everyone and every game had at least 1 correct tip. Hats off to ozzz2002 who was the only one to have faith in Hull KR to beat Leeds away and turn around a 50 point deficit into a 20 point advantage in the space of 80 minutes. In the end we managed a paltry 30/78 or 38.46%.
  • wwe84 showed the way this round to take a solo weekly win with 4/6. Not quite as impressive were the spoons awarded to Sypher and ElfTwinkle for 1/6.
  • wwe84 continues his climb up the ladder and moves into solo second place while Sypher continues to move in the opposite direction. Dizart and ElfTwinkle also drop to their lowert position all season.
  • wwe84 halves paper_aero's lead to 1 point while their is no change at the bottom as both ozzz2002 and illiniman14 went 3/6 to remain on the bottom rung, however they narrowed the gap to Sypher to just 1 point.

  • Catalans scored from their first set of tackles and never looked back as they thrashed Hull KR by 40 points, giving them a 5th succesive win and 3rd successive away win. They are not looking anything like the team that struggled on the road in previous seasons. The other Hull side performed much better when overcoming bottom placed Huddersfield to also give them a 5th successive win. Leeds season continues to go from bad to worse as Salford condemned them to a 4th successive defeat. Warrington failed in their attempt to open a 4 point gap at the top of the standings after St Helens travelled to meet them and left with a 6th successive victory at the Halliwell Jones Stadium although the home side kept it interesting with 2 late tries. Wigan were missing 10 regular first team players and it showed as Wakefield were superb in annihilating them by 62-0, a result not even the most die-hard Wakefield fans would have predicted. Widnes were running away with their match against Castleford when leading 18-0 after 20 minutes but the Tigers comeback was superb and they ran out 12 point winners.
  • PaulE missed the first match with late tips.
  • There were no die-hard Wakefield fans here as none of us thought they would beat Wigan let alone by 62 points. Well done to paper_aero and ozzz2002 who predicted the Warrington home loss, also to paper_aero (again) and Sypher who believed Castleford would win away at Widnes. We had a similar tipping week to last round with 30/77 or 38.96%.
  • I had to use a second hand to count the number of weekly winners this time when wwe84, paper_aero, srini701, illiniman14, Howie72 and George95 all got 3/6. Just as well only 2 (Dizart and Sypher) of us earned a spoon with 1/6 as it saved me from having to take my socks off to count my using my toes.
  • srini701 climbs to his highes poistion of the season while Dizart and Sypher drop to their lowert position. Sypher is in danger of joining illiniman14 as being in 1st place and 13th this season.
  • paper_aero maintains his 1 point lead over wwe84 while Sypher takes over from illiniman14 to join ozzz2002 at the bottom.

  • For the fifth time this season Catalans won away from France and drew level with Warrington at the top of the table, they proved too good for their St Helens hosts. What a difference a year makes in Super League. Super League was turned on its head as the bottom placed Huddersfield kept first place Warrington scoreless in eking out a win but it was not enough to get them off the bottom of the standings. Leeds made sure of that when they also beat a top of the table team, this time it was Hull FC. It snapped a 4 game losing streak for the Rhinos and a 5 game winning streak for Hull. Wigan forgot about last week's heavy defeat to Wakefield to overcome Castleford in a hard fought match.
  • It was another poor tipping week for us with 20/52 or 38.46% and would have been worse if Wigan had not won. Huddersfield's win was the hardest to predict and I am not sure how ElfTwinkle thought the bottom placed team would beat the top placed team.
  • It was a shortened round with the catchup matches from the World Club Challenge so I was expecting a number of weekly winners and wooden spooners but it was not to be thanks to the upsets. ElfTwinkle was the weekly winner with 3/4 and srini701 took home the spoon with 0/4.
  • Little change the top, paper_aero continues to lead over wwe84 by 1 point with N-Bomb and Howie72 narrowing the gap to be another point behind. Sypher climbs off the bottom by going one better than ozzz2002 this week, leaving ozzz2002 all by himself.

  • Huddersfield could not quite produce a second upset in a row as a last minute Wigan try cemented a 7 point win for the Warriors who took advantage of the Giants having 2 players sinbinned during the match. In a 13 try thriller it was St Helens that scored 7 of them and edged Leeds, handing the defending champions a 9th loss in 12 games. Warrington turned last week's defeat around to thrash Widnes and remain at the top of the standings. Catalans joined Warrington and Wigan at the top with a hard fought home win over Salford, 18 quick points in the middle of the second half gave them a big enough cushion to withstand a late Salford comeback. Hull FC jumped out to a 24-6 lead only for Wakefield to go into the break level at 24 each and they took the lead 4 minutes into the second half. After that it was all Hull FC as they ran away in the end. Hull KR lead by 4 points at halftime over Castleford and 38 unanswered second half points saw them win easily in the end. Every game this round was high scoring with 45 points being the fewest scored.
  • This may surprise some people but PaulE missed the forst match due to late tips.
  • We made up for previous poor tipping weeks by going 58/77 or a strike rate of 75.32%. We all tipped correctly the Wigan and Catalans victories with the HKR win being the hardest to pick with only wwe84 and ozzz2002 being successful.
  • This week was a round for weekly winners with 8 of us getting 5/6, the highlight being a first for ozzz2002 which leaves only PaulE looking for a first weekly win. It may help if he gets his tips in on time....The spoon went to ElfTwinkle with 2/6.
  • No change at the top or bottom as the top 6 all earned weekly wins and the bottom 2 did the same.
