2016 Tipping Comp

The NRL season will be kicking off next week on Thursday 3rd March. The rule for this year's comp are the same as previous years, viz.

    • One point a correct pick, nothing for a loss.
    • Default if you forget to pick, the wooden spoon score.
    • Perfect picks score a bonus point.
    • If needed, end-of-season tiebreaker for podium spots will be HoF v Spoons. Largest margin wins, or if the margin is equal, most weekly HoF wins.
    • Deadline is kick-off in the first game, usually 7:30pm to 7:45pm on Friday night AEST or AEDT. It could be earlier, if the NZ Warriors have a Friday night game at home.

This is the 16th edition of the NRL tipping comp at FT (it was the first-ever tipping comp).

  • Welcome to the 2016 edition of the NRL tipping competition. Last year we had 12 runners but this year we have 15. A big welcome to LeoDaVinci, ASA, ElfTwinkle and Copago with ony BxBarracuda absent form 2015.
  • Will N-Bomb be able to retain his title? Will paper_aero and ozzz2002 remain on the podium? Will one of the newcomers be able to jump straight to the top? So many questions to be answered over the course of the season.
  • Davjack and Copago missed the first match.
  • The season began with last year's beaten grand finallists, Brisbane, travelling to Paramatta and returning north with the victory after never really looking like losing. Manly with 8 new players had few answers in their loss to a dominant Canterbury side, they will have to go back to the drawing board to improve next week. Two late penalties and a last minute try saw Canberra edge Penrith at home in a thriller which saw both teams lose star players to injury. Wests had a huge half time lead over the Warriors (who cannot seem to win an opening day match) but had to survive a tremendous comeback to record the win, the Warriors were looking to score the game winning try in the last few seconds when Wests scored the final try with the help of a dodgy video ref decision (it will not be the last this season). North Queensland got the defence of their title off to the perfect start when a late converted try saw them edge a gritty Cronulla. South Sydney showed why they are one of the heavily favoured teams when they dismantled the Sydney Roosters in an impressive way. Gold Coast was almost as convincing when easily beating Newcastle at home. Melbourne made it 12 opening round wins in a row when they edged St George in a see-saw contest.
  • No games were tipped by everyone and no one picked Manly to lose at home. Over all we tipped 70/118 or 59.32% for a solid opening round.
  • The first weekly winner is wwe84 who almost picked the entire card in getting 7/8. On the other hand Sypher was more impressive in not managing to pick a winning team at all, I almost feel that he deserves a bonus point for his goose egg score of 0/8.
  • Not surprisingly, wwe84 is the early leader with a 1 point gap back to 3 in a share for 2nd. Sypher starts the season with a 4 point gap at the bottom but has plenty of time left to make a come back.

  • Penrith were up by 14 points and looked like winning their first match of the season until a try in the last minute and conversion after the final siren stole it for Canterbury. Brisbane took a narrow 12-10 lead into the break against the Wariors but a clinical second half kept the Warriors scoreless and they won comfortably and in doing so set a club record of 10 consecutive games where they kept the opposition to less than 20 points. Sydney Roosters lead in Canberra 16-6 at half time before being caught in the second half and overtaken with a late field goal, the first time the Raiders have won back-to-back to open a season since 2005. Souths continued their spectacular start to the season by destroying Newcastle by 42 points to take their tally to 90 points scored in 2 matches. A poor first half cost North Queensland as Paramatta ground out a narrow victory over the 2015 grand final winners. St George scored first with a penalty after 22 minutes against Cronulla but would not trouble the scorers again as 3 tries in 7 minutes just before half time but the Sharks in control which they would not relinquish after the break. Melbourne trailed by 4 points to Gold Coast just before half time but 2 tries in 3 minutes saw them ahead at the break and gave them the momentum to carry on to earn the victory. A James Tedesco hattrick saw Wests Tigers overcome Manly at home.
  • We all picked Melbourne to beat St George at home. The most difficult match to tip proved to be Paramatta's win over North Queensland with just wwe84 and ASA managing this.
  • wwe84 has gone back-to-back 7/8 to start the season with consecutive weekly wins and is joined this week by ASA. Sypher has earned back-to-back spoons and is joined by ozzz2002, Copago and Howie72. The one bright spot is this week he tipped 4/8 so is on the board and ready for a comeback.
  • Our two weekly winners head the standings with wwe84 doubling his lead to 2 points over ASA. Sypher remains 4 points adrift at the bottom with ozzz2002 in his sights.

  • Ony one team turned up at 1300SMILES Stadium as the home team Cowboys kept Sydney Roosters scoreless in demolishing them by 40-0. Parramatta showed their victory over North Queesnland last week as no fluke as they travelled to unbeaten Canterbury and left with a hard fought victory in front of 30000 fans. Newcastle and Canberra could not be separated as they fought out a thrilling 24 all draw, the 10 minutes of sudden death extra time could not bring about a winning score as each team missed 3 field goal attempts and Canberra's attempt at a 52m penalty goal fell short. Brisbane let a 16 point lead slip away at Penrith when a Panthers field goal in the 77th minute won it for the hosts. Wests Tigers scored the first two and last two tries against Gold Coast but it was not enough as 5 tries and 30 points in a 25 minute spell was enough for the hosts to earn a valuable win. A field goal and converted try in the last 3 minutes was enough for Melbourne to down the Warriors in Auckland and remain unbeaten. Souths came back down to earth, albeit a very soggy earth, as St George outswam them in the driving rain and puddles to earn a narrow 2 point win. Cronulla lost for the 33rd time in 39 matches at Brookvale Oval as Manly win for the first time this season.
  • George95 missed the North Queensland vs Sydney match.
  • It was a very poor tipping week with a strike rate of just 35/119 or 29.41%, not helped at all by Parramatta's victory and the Newcastle/Canberra draw as no one tipped either match correctly. ASA was the only one to pick Penrith's win over Brisbane though it may have been helped considerably by his "all home" policy.
  • ASA was the sole winner this week with 5/8 as 5 home teams won. A measly 1/8 saw ozzz2002, gtho4, ElfTwinkle and George95 (though it was 1/7 for George95 as his North Queensland tip came in after the match had finished) take home wooden spoons.
  • The weekly win sees ASA join wwe84 at the top of the standings, they enjoy a 3 point lead over N-Bomb and illiniman14. Sypher also had a good week with 4/8 and couple with ozzz2002's spoon moves to within 1 point at the bottom.

  • The Canterbury Bulldogs mauled South Sydney in the first half, jumoing out to a 32-0 lead at the break. They eased off a bit in the second half but still won comprehensively. In a replay of last year's Grand Final, it was Brisbane that came out on top in a thoroughly entertaining match against North Queensland but only with a field goal in golden point extra time to reverse the Grand Final result. Gold Coast travelled to Canberra and showed little in attack in the first 65 minutes but then they stormed home with 18 points in the last 15 minutes to stun the home side. Sydney Roosters showed signs of turning their season around but it was not quite enough to overcome Manly as they fell to their 4th loss in a row to start the season. In a game that never reached any great heights it was a late St George try that saw the Dragons win at home to Penrith. It was 8 months and 16 days ago when the Warriors last won but a second half scoring blitz against Newcastle saw their 11 game losing streak end. In an error-ridden game it was Parramatta that overcame Wests Tigers, keeping their hosts scoreless in the process. Melbourne's unbeaten start to the season came to an end when Cronulla beat them for the first time since 2012, grinding out an 8 point victory.
  • LeoDaVinci was running on default fuel this week.
  • It was a better tipping week with 63/112 or 56.25%. One game was tipped correctly by us all and surprisingly we all thought the Warriors would win for the first time in 12 games. A special mention to Sypher who was the only one to give Gold Coast a chance in Canberra.
  • N-Bomb became the 3rd person to get a weekly win when he went 7/8, only missing the Gold Coast upset. A hattrick of spoons for ozzz2002 and he is joined by Copago in getting 3/8.
  • wwe84 takes over the solo lead again, now 2 points ahead of ASA and N-Bomb, he is on target to spend the whole season at the top. Sypher and ozzz2002 trade places at the bottom and now ozzz2002 is 2 points adrift.

  • South Sydney burst from the gates to score 3 tries in the first 15 minutes against Manly but faded as the game went on, they did however hang on to earn a valuable win. Brisbane Broncos blew many first half chances and withstood a spirited Gold Coast comeback to earn themselves another victory. Melbourne left it late but did enough in the end to overcome a resilient Newcastle at home. Cronulla outpointed Wests Tigers in a very entertaining game to win back-to-back for the first time this season. St George Dragons ran out of puff as the impressive North Queensland Cowboys kept them scoreless in running away at the end by 36-0. A stunning try in golden point extra time was enough to see the Warriors win back-to-back in a high scoring game on the Central Coast to leave their hosts, the Sydney Roosters, winless after 5 rounds. Penrith travelled the short distance to Parramatta and stole the win with 2 tries in the final 5 minutes, the winning try coming after the final siren. Canberra Raiders travelled to Belmore and ambushed the Canterbury Bulldogs to give them their first win at this ground since 1990.
  • George95 and Copago both missed the Manly vs Souths match.
  • We tipped about as well this week as last week, it was looking like a very good week until the final 2 matches. We ended up with 61/110 or 55.45%. One game was tipped correctly by us all and that was Melbourne's win at home. However, no one thought Canberra would win at Belmore for the first time in 26 years.
  • There were 2 weekly winners this round with paper_aero and ElfTwinkle both going 6/8. We went one better with spoons as ASA, Sypher and Davjack all went 2/8.
  • wwe84's lead is halved to 1 point by N-Bomb but he has still been on top for all 5 weeks so far. Sypher's spoon sees ozzz2002 join him at the bottom, only 1 point behind Davjack.

  • For the second week in a row St George travelled to Queensland and for the second game in a row they were kept scoreless up there, this time Brisbane securing the comfortable win. In round 1 the Sydney Roosters went down by 32 points at home to South Sydney, this time they won their first match of the season by beating Souths away and in doing so avoided their worst start to a season since 1966 when they did not win a match all season. Parramatta put aside potential salary cap trouble by thrashing the visiting Canberra Raiders. The Warriors once again showed their woeful side as they went down easily to Manly at home. North Queensland came from behind to overcome Penrith away. Cronulla scored the first 3 tries but had to hold on against Gold Coast and finished with just 1 fit interchange player. Newcastle won for the first time this season when they edged Wests Tigers but it was not without controversy. A second ball was thrown from the crowd onto the field and when West's Jordan Rankin was retrieving a high bomb, another Newcastle player kicked the second ball at him causing him to lose concentration and make a mess of it, the referee ended up awarding the Knights a drop out from under the posts and from this they scored a crucial try. Melbourne lost at home for the first time this season as the Canterbury Bulldogs continued their recent dominance over them, the Bulldogs have beaten the Storm in the last 6 matches including 3 in Melbourne.
  • Copago and Davjack both missed the Manly vs Souths match. Copago also (for some strange reason) did not tip the Penrith vs North Queensland match.
  • We are getting consistent with our tips as we ended up very similar to the last 2 rounds with 61/109 or 55.96%. Every game was tipped correctly by at least 2 of us with the hardest to predict being the Roosters and Sea Eagles wins.
  • Sypher was the sole weekly winner with an outstanding 8/8 and earning himself the first bonus point of the season. The 2 spoons went to Copago and Davjack with 2/6 and 2/7 respectively.
  • No change at the top as the first 6 in the standings all went 4/6 so wwe84 maintains a 1 point lead. Sypher's perfect round and bonus point sees him jump from last equal to 7th equal, ozzz2002 also climbs off the bottom and they are replaced by Davjack.

  • Parramatta took the lead against Manly in the 70th minute and two further tries blew the lead out to 12 points which does not give justice to how tight the game was. North Queensland continues to frighten the competition as they demolished South Sydney, showing how tough it will be to stop them winning back to back grand finals. It took only 8 minutes against Gold Coast for St George to snap their 171 minute scoring drought, 19 points in the match was enough for them to beat the Titans away. The Warriors showed their good side in winning "away" against Canterbury, the Bulldogs taking their home game across the Tasman to Wellington. Brisbane were simply too good for Newcastle and for the second week in a row they kept the opposition scoreless, the 53 points scored was enough to win a few matches. Cronulla travelled to Canberra and deservedly won on the day, showing good attack and amazing defence to keep the Raiders at bay for most of the game. Melbourne defeated Wests Tigers in golden point extra time but it was not without controversy as the Tigers fullback was taken out in a high tackle and as he ay on the ground injured the Storm scored a try, subsequently the high tackler was put on report for the foul play but the try stood. Goal kicking was the difference as Penrith edged the Sydney Roosters by 4 points after both sides scored 3 tries.
  • illiniman14 missed the Manly vs Parramatta match through late tips. Copago also missed the first....oh wait, she was in time this week. Sypher got his tips entered in time but for some reason missed tipping the Brisbane vs Newcastle match but as we all tipped Brisbane it has been decided he will be awarded a gimme point, shown by the 'g' in the above table. A gimme point is not awarded to those who miss a match due to late tips.
  • Another similar tipping week to the last 3 weeks with a strike rate of 67/118 or 56.77%. We all tipped the Brisbane victory and only LeoDaVinci missed the North Queensland win. The St George and Warriors wins were the hardest to tip.
  • This week it is gtho4's turn for a weekly win and he does so in style with 7/8. Three spoons were handed out for 2/8 to ASA, LeoDaVinci and Davjack.
  • A slight change at the top with N-Bomb joining wwe84 in a tie for the lead, 2 points ahead of paper_aero. This gives wwe84 a solo or share of the lead for each of the first 7 rounds. Davjack's spoon sees him drop further behind with there now being a 4 point gap to ozzz2002.

  • A big defensive effort by Souths in the first 30 minutes told later in the game as they went down by 30-8 at Brisbane, the 8 points conceded by the Broncos put paid to equalling a 119 year old record of keeping the opposition scoreless for 3 consecutive matches. Gold Coast drew level with Canterbury at full time after scoring 2 converted tries in the final 17 minutes but it was not to be enough as the Bulldogs triumphed with a drop goal in golden point extra time. What can I say about the West Tigers performance at Canberra that the 60-6 scoreline does not say, they received an old-fashioned thumping and returned to Sydney with their tails between their legs. Parramatta were leading North Queensland 16-14 in the 66th minutes when they had a player sinbinned (don't get me started on the way the sinbin is utilised in the NRL), the Cowboys subsequently ran away with the game in the next 10 minutes with 3 tries as the Eels were down to 12 players. Penrith outscored Cronulla by 4 tries to 3 but went down by 2 points in a thriller, they had a chance to tie with a late conversion but like most of the kicks for goal for the Panthers it went wide. Manly played the windy conditions in Newcastle perfectly to take a 10-4 into the wind lead at halftime and never let the Knights into the game in the second half. Scoring the last 3 tries after being down 18-0 to St George was not enough for the Roosters as they went down 20-18 in another thriller. There is something seriously wrong at the Warriors as most of their performances are very poor and they are incapable of defending or attacking, this time going down to Melbourne by 42-0.
  • Copago and LeoDaVinci were absent this week so were running on default fuel.
  • We had our best tipping week of the season, it will be difficult to beat as we went 90/104 86.53%. The weekly win went to Dizart, gtho4, Davjack and illiniman14 who all went perfect with 8/8 and earned themselves a bonus point each. Sypher earned himself a spoon with 5/8 which would have been enough for a weekly win in round 3.
  • No change at the top as both wwe84 and N-Bomb went 7/8, wwe84 has been in the lead for all 8 rounds to start the season. The perfect rounds from gtho4 and illiniman14 sees them join paper_aero in a tie for third. Davjack's perfect round sees him narrow the gap at the bottom to 1 point.

  • Wests Tigers started with a hiss and a roar and jumped out to a 20 point lead after 20 minutes and though South Sydney outscored them over the rest of the game, it was enough for them to ease to win. Parramatta's captain was missing due to personal reasons, they suffered a late injury just before the game and further injuries during the game but they managed to guts out a win over the Canterbury Bulldogs. Penrith almost let slip a good lead over Canberra when the Raiders scored 2 late tries to draw level but he Panthers had the ast say with the winning field goal in the 79th minute. Sydney Roosters kept Newcastle scoreless while easily outplaying them in a 38-0 thrashing. North Queensland Cowboys cruised to win over injury-hit Manly. An inexperienced Warriors side that were missing 5 frontline players after they were stood down for breaching team standards were too good for the St George Dragons, their first win over the Dragons in the last 12 attempts. Melbourne travelled to the Gold Coast and left with a comprehensive win, carrying on from last week and keeping the Titans scoreless. Melbourne will now have the chance of equalling the 119 year old record if they can keep their next opponents scoreless. Cronulla survived a superb comeback from Brisbane after the Broncos came from 22 points down at half time to finish within 2 points at full time.
  • N-Bomb and Davjack both missed the first match.
  • No games were tipped by everyone though Copago was jumping for joy when she was the only one to tip the Wests win at Souths. It was not quite the same for Davjack who was the only one to not pick the Sydney Roosters win over Newcastle.
  • We were back to normal this week when we tipped 68/118 or 57.62%. Howie72 earned his first weekly win with 7/8 while 3 spoons were handed out to LeoDaVinci, Sypher and Davjack with 3/8 (or 3/7 for Davjack).
  • wwe84 takes back a solo lead to make it 9 for 9 at the top to start the season, paper_aero and illiniman14 join N-Bomb in second place. Davjack's spoon sees him drop back to 2 points behind at the bottom.

In Round 7 the total for home team wins seems to have gone strange, I know nothing about any of the teams and therefore have just been picking home wins so total should be the same as me.

You are right, the total home wins should show as 4 less, I shall correct it.

It is...Howie's mistake is below the table on week 7...he has 27 + 2 = 33 instead of 29. Your 41 is correct, ASA.

  • Parramatta were stripped of all competition points and heavily fined for breaching the salary cap and were not allowed to earn any points for the season until they could prove they are under the salary cap again, many argue the penalty is too light and they should remain on 0 points all season. Anyway, their match against Souths was played after they got back under the salary cap and it looked like they would earn their first legitimate points of the season only for Souths to snatch the win away with a late try. The Warriors lead 18-14 away to Penrith in Christchurch but could not score a point in the second half as the Panthers dominated to run away with the victory. Melbourne also took their home game against North Queensland on the road, sneaking a thrilling 1 point win over the Cowboys in Brisbane. Manly's "home" game against Brisbane was played in Brisbane immediately following the Melbourne match and Brisbane were far too strong at their home ground for their Sea Eagle hosts. Newcastle hosted Cronulla with 7 players under the age of 20 and the Sharks chewed them up and spit them out as 11 tries later the game ended at 62-0. The Bulldogs bullied their way past an injury-ravaged Wests to record a very comfortable win. Gold Coast finished strongly with 3 tries in the last 20 minutes to overcome the Sydney Roosters.
  • Once again no games were tipped by everyone with the closest being the 13 correct tips for the Cronulla thrashing of Newcastle.
  • Our standard success rate seems to be between 55% and 60% and this week was no different as we went 71/120 or 59.16%. Both illiniman14 and Davjack tipped twice, possibly due to their being 2 weeks between rounds. Davjack tipped the same both times but illiniman14 had one tip different so I took his second lots of tips to be the ones used. As a result he is the weekly winner with 7/8 (would have been 6/8 with the first lot of tips). The spoon went to wwe84 with 3/8.
  • It has taken 10 rounds to dislodge wwe84 from the top of the leaderboard, both illiniman14 and paper_aero overtaking him with the lead now going to illiniman14 by 1 point. Davjack remains at the bottom with the gap opening up to 3 points.

  • An error-ridden South Sydney made it back-to-back wins with a victory over St George thanks to a superb kicking game. Once again the North Queensland vs Brisbane match went down to the wire and in a replay of the 2015 Grand Final it was Johnathan Thurston who kicked a late game winning field goal to give the Cowboys a 1 point win. Despite being down to a 3-man bench for almost all of the game, Wests Tigers toughed it out to overcome the Newcastle Knights. Canberra punished Warriors errors in completely dominating the New Zealand franchise to comprehensivley beat them for the first time in 6 games. Goal kicking proved to be the difference as Cronulla overcame Manly to move to the top of the standings. Gold Coast only took the lead against Penrith for the first time in the 78th minute as they came from behind to score two tries in the last 5 minutes, after horrendous Panthers errors, to steal the victory. Canterbury raced out to an 18 point lead before Sydney Roosters thought about making it a contest but the Bulldogs were in control throughout to ease to the victory. Melbourne were too clinical for Parramatta as they joined the Sharks at the top of the table, leaving the Eels firmly at the bottom of the standings after the loss of competition points.
  • LeoDaVinci is running on default fuel for this round while Howie72, Sypher and George95 all missed the first match with late tips (Howie72 by less than 10 minutes).
  • Once again no games were tipped by everyone with the closest being the 13 correct tips for the Wests Tigers victory over Newcastle, Dizart being the sole tipper to have misguided faith in Newcastle.
  • We tipped 67/111 this round to give us a 60.36% success rate. This strike rate was helped by 4 of us earning a weekly win with illiniman14, N-Bomb, ElfTwinkle and George95 all getting 6/8 or 6/7 in George95's case. Spoons went to ozzz2002 and Sypher with 3/8 and 3/7 respectively.
  • This week wwe84 drops off the podium for the first time while illiniman14 doubles his lead to 2 points. Davjack remains at the bottom but has closed the gap to 2 points.

  • State of Origin time again when some teams get considerably weakened the round before the New South Wales vs Queensland battle. Brisbane Broncos are one of these teams and once again Wests Tigers is one of the sides to meet them, the Tigers travelled to Brisbane and took advantage though only just with a 76th minute field goal being the difference. St George also took advantage of an understrength North Queensland side, 2 early tries setting up a scrappy victory. Canterbury Bulldogs lead Canberra by 20-10 entering the last quarter before 3 tries in 11 minutes propelled the Raiders to victory despite yet another headscratching decision by the video referees in the bunker, just one of many this season. A topsy turvy first half saw Newcastle leading Parramatta at half-time but 2 tries midway through the second half saw the Eels take the lead and they hung on to record their first win since being stripped of 12 competition points. State of Origin 1 saw Queensland travel south to take on New South Wales and in the end Sydney was painted maroon after a mighty defensive effort from both teams saw just 10 points scored as Queensland emerged with a 6-4 victory. It was not without controversy as a potential NSW try in the second half was overturned by the video bunker, the referee went upstairs saying try so it needed to be 100% certain that the try was not scored to be overturned, those in blue say yes and those in maroon say no as did the bunker. The NSW coach will be a bit lighter, in the pocket after his post-match comments stating the referees should be axed.....Anyway, it means the Blues need to win in Brisbane to have a chance of denying a Maroon's 10th series win in 11 years.
  • ASA was running on default fuel this round.
  • It is good to see ozzz2002 finally seeing the light and going for the mighty Maroons, it has taken a while for the obvious to sink in. Now we just have to persuade Copago and gtho4 to join him on the maroon side. smile
  • We tipped 38/70 this round to give us a 54.28% success rate. Again the strike rate was helped by 4 of us earning a weekly win with paper_aero, Davjack, N-Bomb, and Howie72 all getting 4/5. The wooden spoon went to Dizart with a goose egg 0/5 so was not a good week to be running on default fuel.
  • We have a tie at the top of the standings with paper_aero joining iliniman14 on the top step with N-Bomb just 1 point behind. There is also a change at the bottom with both ozzz2002 and Davjack overtaking LeoDaVinci who now finds himself 1 point in arrears.

  • Two tries in the last 10 minutes were only enough for injury-ravaged Manly to make the scoreline a little more respectable as Canberra dominated and won comfortably. The Warriors put in their best performance of the season to defeat the visiting Brisbane though who knows which Warriors team will turn up next week. Brisbane suffer a third successive loss for the first time since rounds 15-18 in 2014 (one round would have been a bye). North Queensland continued their dominant home form as they cruised to big win over the hapless Newcastle Knights. Penrith took the early lead at Melbourne but it was the big Melbourne forwards that paved the way to victory as the Storm scored the remaining 24 points in the match. The Sydney Roosters proved to be more at home in water as they outsplashed the Wests Tigers in monsoonal like Sydney weather that threatened to postpone the match for a while. Gold Coast were crusing when 18-0 up just after half time before Souths mounted a comeback only to seemingly fall just short as 77th minute Titans try looked to have sown up the match but the conversion went wide to give Souths a chance which they duly took from the short kick-off. However, Gold Coast took the win in golden point extra time with field goal. It was just as tight in the Canterbury vs Cronulla match when a 79th minute try from the Sharks tied it up and the sideline conversion was successful to give them the win and keep them atop the standings.
  • We had a decent tipping round this week as we went 67/105 or a strike rate of 63.80% with only Howie72 getting below 50%. The hardest match to tip was Gold Coast's victory at South Sydney where only Sypher earns the hearty congratulations.
  • Sypher was also the sole weekly winner with 6/7, only missing Canberra's win over Manly as he went for the Sea Eagles to extend their lenghty unbeaten run in Canberra. Howie72 takes home a spoon with 3/7.
  • There is no change at the top or the bottom as the top 4 and bottom 3 all retain their positions from last week. The only difference being N-Bomb drops to 2 points behind illiniman14 and paper_aero.

  • Brisbane Broncos (on a 3 game losing streak) hosted Canberra Raiders (on a 3 game winning streak) so of course the home team won to break both streaks, the Raiders comeback in the last 20 minutes was too little and too late. Wests Tigers showed how attacking and entertaining they can be when scoring 6 tries and easily accounting for South Sydney. The Warriors had their best attacking game of the season when they travelled to Newcastle and put 50 points past the home team, the Knights have now lost 8 in a row. Parramatta took their home game against Gold Coast to Darwin and were quickly 8-0 down before they took control and easily won in the end, too many Titans errors cost them. Melbourne stormed into Sydney and kept the Sydney Roosters scoreless for the first time while recording their biggest ever win over them. It looked like it was all over for Penrith just after half time as Manly scored again to take a 24-4 lead but no one told the Panthers as they made one of the greatest comebacks with 27 points in the last 31 minutes to stun the home team. A "Pass of God" helped Canterbury overcome the St George when Tony Williams attempted to pass the ball but it hit his left hand and went forward, he regathered and a try was scored after his next pass was more orthodox. The try stood as it was deemed he did not deliberately push the ball forward. This rule was changed over 100 years ago when Dally Messenger used to throw the ball over the defenders and race around them to catch it before it hit the ground. The Cronulla vs North Queensland match lived up to the pre-match billing of being one of the games of the season. Stray boots, alleged elbows, a shoulder charge and a high tackle threatening to derail State of Origin hopes, potential tries denied by the video bunker and chances at both ends, in the end it was a late field goal and penalty that settled it in the favour of the Sharks.
  • Copago and LeoDaVinci were running on default fuel this week.
  • We had a good tipping round this week as we went 75/104 or a strike rate of 72.11% with only Davjack getting below 50%. We all tipped Brisbane to beat Canberra at home with the hardest match to tip being the Tigers win over the Rabbitohs.
  • Dizart and Howie72 are the weekly winners with a perfect 8/8 and gaining a bonus point each, the second perfect round for Dizart this season. Davjack takes home a spoon with 3/8.
  • There is a change at the top with illiniman moving back to sole possession of the lead by 1 point over paper-aero. N-Bomb is overtaken by wwe84 to fall of the podium for the podium for the first time in 2016. No change at the bottom with Davjack's spoon and LeoDaVinic's default keeping them at the bottom.

  • Parramatta Eels turned a narrow half-time lead into a comfortable winning margin as they kept Souths scoreless in the second half, capping the victory with a stunning intercept try at the end for their third win in a row. St George had 1 player away at the State of Origin while Melbourne had 2 but what made the most difference was 3 late injury withdrawals for Melbourne as the Dragons took advantage to run out 10 point winners and allowing the Cronulla Sharks to take over top spot with their 2 competition points for the bye. In a dour match it was the Warriors that came out on top over the Roosters despite being outscore by 2 tries to 1. It was the willingness of the Roosters to concede penalties rather than allow the Warriors to get any momentum that cost them in the end as the 3 successful penalty goals decided the match. Three tries in an 8 minute spell early in the first half set up Gold Coast for a comfortable win over an under-strength Manly side and propelled them into the top 8. Now for the game everyone has been waiting for, the second State of Origin match from Brisbane. At times New South Wales were superb but then they would give it all away with errors, one of which gifted Queensland the opening try with a 90 metre run following a dropped ball. Queensland opened up a 10 point lead with 18 minutes to go but unlike last year, NSW refused to give up and stormed back with a try of their own and were denied a chance to take the lead with a slight knock on. Queensland took advantage of the let-off to head down field, force a NSW error and score the clinching try to give them a 10th series win in the last 11 years.
  • LeoDaVinci was running on default fuel this week.
  • We had a decent tipping round this week as we went 46/70 or a strike rate of 65.71%, helped by two perfect rounds. Only Sypher thought the Roosters would beat the Warriors in Auckland and the hardest match to tip was the Dragons win over the table topping Storm but even then 5 of us foresaw this happening.
  • As mentioned above a perfect 5/5 earned a weekly win and bonus point for paper_aero and N-Bomb. A handful of spoons were handed out with Davjack, ozzz2002, Sypher, Copago and ElfTwinkle all tipping 2/5.
  • There are changes at the top again with paper_aero taking back the solo lead over illiniman14 and N-Bomb leaping back over wwe84 to gain a spot on the podium. No change once again at the bottom with 4 of the bottom 5 earning a spoon and bottom placed LeoDaVinci going default.

  • Penrith held on to edge a fast finishing South Sydney, the Panthers lead by 14 points with 7 minutes to go but 2 quick Rabbitohs tries had the fans on the edge of their seats for the final minute, the last play of the game saw a kick just elude a Rabbitohs player and the game was over. Five first half tries set St George up for a dominant victory over Newcastle despite a quiet second half, goal kicking kept the scoreline down in the first half as only one conversion was successful but the 30 point tally at full time was the most points the Dragons had scored in a match all season. Cronulla increased their winning streak to 11 games but did it tough at home to the Warriors, a wobbly field goal in golden point extra time saw them victorious after a controversial penalty try gave them an 8 point lead only to be pegged back by the final hooter. Canterbury ran riot at ANZ Stadium as the visiting Brisbane Broncos had no answer and went down by 26 points. Canberra earned a crucial victory away at an injury-plagued Gold Coast to take them back inside the top 8 in the standings. It was a classic case of a game of two halves in Melbourne when the home side raced out to a 26-0 lead over Wests only for the Tigers to outscore them 20-3 in the second half, in the end it was goal kicking that decided it as both teams scored 4 tries each. North Queensland remain unbeaten at home but only just as Manly came back from 18-4 down at half time to just fall short in a 10 try thriller.
  • We had a very good tipping round this week as we went 80/105 or a strike rate of 76.19% though no games were tipped by us all. The closest was St George's win over Newcaste were only ASA's all home policy kept the game from being perfect. The hardest match to tip was the Raider's win away to the Gold Coast which saw 6 of us earn a point for it.
  • Two more perfect rounds earned the weekly win and a bonus point, both wwe84 and paper_aero went 7/7 with it being the second time in a row for paper-aero. No one dropped below 50% this week as 4/7 was enough for ozzz2002, Sypher, Copago and Davjack to take home a spoon each, these 4 also took home spoons last week and for Davjack it makes it a hattrick of spoons.
  • We have the largest lead of the season as paper_aero opens up a 4 point gap over illiniman14, N-Bomb and wwe84. This group have a healthy lead over the best of the rest with 5th place a further 5 points behind. At the bottom, LeoDaVinci's return paid dividends for him as he scrambles over Davjack to climb off the bottom of the standings.
