This year's Madness comp will be at the same site as last year. A bracket for 2016 has been setup once again at cbssports.com .. for those of us who played last year, you're half-way there, as invite emails have been sent by csbssports.com to all of last year's participants (using last year's email addresses); the email displays your reg'd ID. The scoring system remains unchanged. There are 63 games in this comp; we pick all of them in one go on the cbssports.com website:
1st Round (32 games) : 1 pt 2nd Round (16 games) : 2 pts 3rd Round ( 8 games) : 3 pts (regional semis ) Sweet Sixteen 4th Round ( 4 games) : 4 pts (regional finals) Elite Eight 5th Round ( 2 games) : 6 pts (national semis ) Final Four 6th Round ( 1 game ) : 9 pts (national final) Seedings: additional pts added for each correct pick, being the team's seed. |
Location: http://www.cbssports.com/login/ftmm.mayhem Group password: ---- if that doesn't work, try this link: http://ftmm2004.mayhem.cbssports.com/e If you've sucessfully logged in, you will see this in the top LH corner of the screen: 2016 Comp FT- if you'd like to join the Madness tipping comp but do not have a cbssports ID, there's a link on that page to register. You must have a cbs ID to play in this comp! Please note - you may, but don't have to, use your real name to register (surname, first name); but please pick something for those two fields that looks like your FT username (so that we know who you are).
- this also applies to those who played last year, but can't remember their ID and/or have changed their email address and thus can't retrieve their password (which they've forgotten) .. you will need to re-register.
- please check your reg'd email address in your account settings/profile after you login.
This year's tipping comp is the 15th edition of March Madness! No one has retained their title in this comp, and no one has won it twice (but some have been on the podium twice). The defending title-holder is toocool4u.. silver and bronze went to srini701 and LeoDaVinci. The winner of the 2008 comp, ralzzz, holds the record for the biggest winning margin (see summary tables of last 14 comps in the post below this one) .. and doomed won bronze that year the hard way; he failed to pick any of the Final Four! Howie72 holds the record for the most correct picks with 51/63, achieved in the 2007 comp.

This year's Madness starts on Thursday, March 17 and the final is on Monday, April 2. The bracket will open for tipping when the field is inserted by cbssports.com, which should happen on Sunday, March 13. However, the last four teams to qualify will not be known until Monday and Tuesday (they will enter the comp as the four #16 seeds) .. btw a #16 seed has never won a game against their #1 seed opponents since the NCAA started the current Madness format in 1985. Last Four play-in: Tue/Wed 15/16 March now aka First Four First Round: Thu-Fri March 17-18 Second Round: Sat-Sun March 19-20 Third Round: Thu-Fri March 24-25 Fourth Round: Sat-Sun March 26-27 Final Four: Saturday 2nd April Championship: Monday 4th April Final Four at NRG Stadium in Houston TX Deadline: cbssports.com will close the bracket of 63 picks at noon EDT on Thursday, March 17th. Good luck remembering your password (if you receive the email) or your ID (if you're reg'd but have changed your email address) .. and good luck registering if you're new! To confirm you're in and that everything's hunky dory, please post in the Group Message Board (it's in the Brackets drop-down menu). Rankings: http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-men/d1Good luck to all of us; and may the best man or best woman win!

6 have signed in so far. 3 of them have absolutely no chance to win since they've won already (me, Howie72, and themonarch) and 3 have a fighting chance (srini701, gtho4, and LeoDaVinci). That's very encouraging of you to say, illini....but guess records are meant to be broken, so we may well have our first repeat winner in this madness

I'm another hopeless cause that's signed in. We're just battling for second - it's a very scientific way to determine who'll win

Maybe this year I won't be eliminated by the end of the first weekend. I have a feeling my bracket will be in pieces by Friday.

For 14 years, this competition has run, and 13 of those have all had the possibility of a champion returning to his or her perch atop the leaderboard to reclaim the mantle of victory. However, none have been able to do so in all of this time. This year’s field features 16 tippers. 7 of us have won before: ElfTwinkle (2005), Howie72 (2007), illiniman14 (2010), N-Bomb (2011), George95 (2012), themonarch (2014), and toocool4u (2015). They all laugh in the face of fate, while 9 others assume they will take home the crown this year: including tested rivals: kevinatilusa, srini701, dg_dave, gtho4, LeoDaVinci, and ozzz2002, but also three newcomers attempting to make their mark on our hallowed grounds: yoyoandcigs, 2tough4u, and terraorca (welcome, by the way, and yes, I am making this sound far more important than it really is).
And sure enough, as is the finest tradition in this competition, two challengers sit atop the leaderboard, because it simply couldn't be any other way. kevinatilusa and yoyoandcigs both hit an amazing 15/16 picks, missing only 12 Arkansas-Little Rock's upset over 5 Purdue. Hitting 15/16 also puts them in the Hall of Fame, meaning that yoyoandcigs managed to do so on his first chance to ever do so. If those two go down to the wire, it could get very interesting, as both picked 1 Kansas to be in the national championship game, but while kevinatilusa has them as his champion, yoyoandcigs has them losing to 2 Michigan State (as do several others; in fact, that matchup is by far the most common of the tips, making up 11 of the 16 championship matchups tipped, with 6 choosing a Michigan State victory).
Following behind those two are N-Bomb and toocool4u, the lead returning champions. Both missed the two 12-over-5 upsets, including Arkansas-Little Rock as mentioned above but also 12 Yale controlling 5 Baylor on the glass. This had to be especially disheartening for Baylor because last year they lost in the first round as well as a 3-seed. toocool4u is rather appropriately followed by 2tough4u, the second newcomer in the top 5. He missed those same 2 games, but then went out on a limb picking an upset and missed out on 3 Utah's victory over 14 Fresno State. He was also dealt the harshest blow of the day, losing his champion in Purdue, but all is not lost since he has an almost completely unique Final Four (only one other person picked 1 of his 3 remaining teams) and has plenty of possible points remaining.
The rest of the field is biding their time behind those tippers. themonarch actually has the most max possible points with 399, mostly thanks to picking 10 VCU in the Final Four. ozzz2002 sits well in the back, but while the first day did not treat him well, he hasn't missed a single Sweet 16 team as of yet, and he has a completely unique Final Four (per usual), anchored by 4 California. That would be an amazing result, seeing as their leading scorer fractured his right hand on Wednesday and is out for at least their first round game.
And now to the Madness. 1 Kansas and 1 Virginia both coasted to victory over their opponents. In the quest to become the first 16-seed to beat a 1-seed, 16 Florida Gulf Coast (who rose to fame in 2013 by reaching the Sweet 16 as a 15-seed), fresh off their First Four victory over 16 Fairleigh Dickinson 96-65, the largest margin ever for an opening-round game in NCAA Tournament history, which may have signaled to 1 North Carolina that they were a bigger threat than your average 16-seed. The Eagles hung around for the entire first half, only down 1 at intermission. However, the Tarheels eventually showed they were too much to handle, and pulled away to an 83-67 victory.
Both 3-seeds (Miami (FL) and Utah) won comfortably but not in blowout fashion. 4 Kentucky crushed 13 Stony Brook and 5 Indiana smashed 12 Chattanooga after shaky starts. 4 Iowa State had no problem taking down 13 Iona; 11 Gonzaga shocked very few with their easy upset over 6 Seton Hall, and 9 Butler coasted to victory over 8 Texas Tech.
However, things looked awry early in Providence. 4 Duke, the returning national champions, who were facing an every-other-year curse: they lost to 15-seed Lehigh in 2012 and 14-seed Mercer in 2014. 13 UNC-Wilmington wanted to continue that trend, so they kept close and at one point led by 6 in the first half, reduced to 43-40 at halftime. The dream began to fade as they went 5 minutes scoreless and Duke went on a 14-0 run. They were able to get the lead down to 5, but never pulled within one possession again, allowing the Blue Devils to move on.
Shortly thereafter, 5 Baylor met up with a curiously-underseeded 12 Yale team, who should have been much higher according to the metrics, but that's another story. Much like the previous game above, Yale was able to extend their lead out to 6 and held a 5-point advantage at halftime. However, Yale would not go through any kind of drought. After Baylor (who probably should be Baylor based on their hideous uniforms) managed to tie the game at 45, Yale went on a 17-5 run. It dwindled down to 7 late in the second half, when Baylor scored 5 quickly, but Yale could not miss a free throw and maintained their advantage in the final seconds, winning 79-75.
5 Purdue was really the unwilling story of the day. They played relatively even with UALR for the first half, and had a nice 5-point lead at halftime. Much like Yale above, the lead expanded up to 13, when the Boilermakers had a 65-52 lead with 3:33 left. Over nearly the next 3 minutes, they decided to not score, allowing UALR to roll off 12 unanswered, and in the waning seconds hit a fadeaway 3 to tie the game and send it to overtime. The 5 minutes of overtime was quite boring and each team scored 5, leaving the result to 2nd overtime. Purdue would never lead the game again, as a quick outburst by the Trojans allowed them to finalize their upset 85-83.
All of the 9-seeds also earned their minor upsets today. Butler's win was mentioned above. 9 Connecticut played a terrible first half against 8 Colorado, but started the second half on a 30-12 sprint which the Buffaloes never caught back up to. The thrilling nightcap was 9 Providence against 8 USC. USC was coached by the same man who took Florida Gulf Coast on their Sweet 16 run, so he is no stranger to excellent tournament play. Providence got up by as much as 7 in the first half, and USC did the same in the second half, but it would not be decided until the final seconds. Tied with 1:27 left, USC hit 1/2 free throws to go up 69-68. Providence couldn't convert and had to foul again, leading to another missed USC free throw. The situation repeated again, meaning USC missed 3/4 free throws, not including the extra 2 they would've had since those were 1-and-1 opportunities. With life breathed back into them, Providence had a layup attempt blocked out of bounds with 3 seconds left. The inbounds pass went straight to a man under the basket who put it in, and the Friars walked out with a 70-69 victory.
And that was only day one.

That crashing sound you hear? It’s your bracket.
And that was only day one But oh, what day two had in store for us. We’ll get the elephant in the room out of the way right now. 2 Michigan State started off poorly against 15 Middle Tennessee, going down 15-2 early. But there was no reason to panic with so much time left in the game. Michigan State got it down to 1 at 23-22, but then Middle Tennessee went back up by 9, and led by 6 at half. It went back down to 2 at 45-43, then back up to 8 at 54-46. Five straight points made it 54-51, but then it ballooned back up to 64-55. Every time the Spartans asked questions, the Blue Raiders had answers. With 8 minutes left, it was down to 65-64, and order seemed restored to the world. They continued trading baskets until 3:34 left when Middle Tennessee held a 77-76 lead. For the next 3 minutes, Michigan State instituted the rarely-successful "don't score" policy, and the lead went back up to 83-76. By the time they got back on their feet, the game was over. Late free throws sealed the game away, and Middle Tennessee walked out with what it perhaps the biggest upset of NCAA Tournament history 90-81, with the Spartans never leading once in the entire game.
That laughing sound you hear? It's kevinatilusa and George95, who are the only tippers to have not lost one of their championship game picks in the first round of the tournament. kevinatilusa still has 1 Kansas and 1 North Carolina alive, while George95 also has the Tarheels with 2 Oklahoma. For those of us that didn't have Michigan State in the championship game, which was 12/16, 2tough4u had already lost 5 Purdue and ozzz2002 lost 4 California in the game that finished just prior. Those latter two were also the only ones who didn't have Michigan State in the Final Four (obviously Purdue was 2tough4u's regional champion), but ozzz2002 lost both California and 6 Texas today.
With that, kevinatilusa sits somewhat comfortably at the top of the standings, with a 13-point lead and his championship game intact. Because of that, he has by far the most max possible points remaining (MPP) with 315, the only one of us who can surpass the 300-point mark. Thanks to picking 10 VCU in the Final Four, themonarch has the 2nd-most MPP with 289 even though he's in 8th place. The rest of the top 5 is made up of positions 2-4, and the rest lag a ways behind, with LeoDaVinci in 6th and dg_dave in 7th for MPP even though they're back in 13th and 14th, respectively.
The way the day started, perhaps we should have been on notice that upsets were on the way. 10 Syracuse played 7 Dayton evenly in the first half, but then smashed them in the 2nd half, going up by as many as 23 on their way to a 70-51 victory. 10 VCU handled 7 Oregon State easily 76-67. But then came the Rainbow Warriors. 13 Hawaii came into the NCAA Tournament with a surprisingly good record; in fact, only Kansas and Arkansas-Little Rock (who both won the day before) had fewer losses. Therefore, it should be no surprise that they were able to open a 7-point lead on 4 California in the first half, especially considering that the Golden Bears lost their leading scorer to injury on Wednesday. The lead expanded up to 10 at 47-37 in the 2nd half, but California was able to fight back to 47-46, only to be followed by a Hawaii resurgence. In the final 5 minutes of the game, Cal came within 6 points of the lead at the closest, but ended up falling 77-66.
With 3 double-digit seed victories in the books, 10 Temple hoped to be the 4th against 7 Iowa. Iowa struggled down the stretch, losing to lowly Illinois (hey, I was able to get them into an NCAA Tournament write-up!) in the Big Ten Tournament. The Hawkeyes started off very strong, going up 12 mid-way through the first half, but also tried the "don't score" strategy and within 3:30 gave up the lead. An Iowa 1-point lead at half turned into a consistent and comfortable 5-10 point lead throughout most of the 2nd half. However, Temple was able to cut it to 3 with 2 minutes left, and missed free throws plagued Iowa, allowing Temple to maintain that deficit. With 2 seconds left, Temple put up a 3-pointer and missed, but Iowa fouled the shooter and he made all 3 free throws to go to overtime at 63-63. The teams played evenly again to 70-70, and Iowa had the ball at the end to make a last-second shot. It went up, missed, and an Iowa player clearly pushed off his opponent going for the rebound, but nothing was called and he made the put-back layup, allowing the Hawkeyes to walk away with a 72-70 victory.
Most of the rest of the day was filled with relatively drama-less games. 10 Pittsburgh and 7 Wisconsin played a low-scoring knockout fight that Pitt led most of the way through, but a steady second half allowed the Badgers to move on. 2 Oklahoma, 5 Maryland, 3 Texas A&M, 1 Oregon, and 2 Xavier all won easily. So did 14 Stephen F. Austin over 3 West Virginia, which would normally require a bigger write-up if it weren't such a steady 2nd-half throttling to a 70-56 win. 6 Notre Dame also turned a late 2nd half run into a 70-63 win over 11 Michigan.
Then the last 2 games of the day happened. 6 Texas, now coached by old-VCU Shaka Smart (who took them to the Final Four) was a prohibitive favorite over 11 Northern Iowa, but it didn't look like it early. The Panthers went on an early 13-0 run to go up 27-13 and held an 8-point lead at halftime. Texas would complete the comeback thanks to an 8:42 stretch where Northern Iowa scored 3 points. Immediately following that, Northern Iowa went on a 19-9 run, followed by another scoreless stretch of nearly 4 minutes. The two battled back and forth, and Texas hit a jumper to tie the game at 72. With only 3 seconds left, Northern Iowa inbounded and heaved up a half-court shot... AND IT WENT IN! Northern Iowa left with a 75-72 victory on a last-second heave that truly embodies March Madness.
The final game did not let up, either. 8 St. Joseph’s enjoyed a 12-0 run in the 2nd half to go up by 13 after an even first half. 9 Cincinnati responded with a 20-5 run of their own, but then went silent and gave St. Joseph’s a 7-0 run. The seconds ticked away, and down by 1, St. Joseph’s hit a 3-pointer to go up 78-76. With one last chance, Cincinnati made a play to the basket for the tie, and a player dunked the ball in! ...a tenth of a second too late. Had he gone for the layup, it probably would have counted, but the extra time it took to throw the ball in the hoop for the dunk cost Cincinnati dearly, and the final score held at 78-76.
But then, that's only day two. |
