The drama was markedly more subdued in the 2nd round than the first two days. While a couple upsets hit the field, there was nothing quite as crazy as what we've been seeing. With all of the results, it's all coming up roses for kevinatilusa. Kevin (naturally) hasn't won before, and he is easily the favorite for finishing this comp as the 15th different winner. Last week he held a 33 point lead for MPP, but he took a hit with Wichita State's loss. LeoDaVinci, who was 13th last week, moves up to 7th this week and 2nd in MPP, and is only 23 points behind kevinatilusa in that category. themonarch is only 1 point back in 3rd. yoyoandcigs is 13 points back from the lead, but is 9th in MPP since he's now lost half of his Elite 8.

Several other possibilities remain on the leaderboard as well. N-Bomb has a chance to rise in the Sweet 16 from his position in 3rd since he went with more chalk than those above him, and he still has Villanova and Xavier alive for the Elite 8, but they will both play their second round games tomorrow. themonarch is only 2 points behind on the leaderboard, but as mentioned above is 3rd in MPP, anchored by VCU, so his bracket faces a true make-or-break when they take on Oklahoma tomorrow. With Kentucky's loss, he's lost half of his Final Four, and if VCU loses he would be out of the running.

Since so many tippers chose similar brackets and championship games, we really need to look for those outsiders to see if there are any other threats to the top of the leaderboard. George95 took a huge dive today going from 3rd to 13th, but stands to rise again tomorrow if he hits all of his picks. He still has Northern Iowa alive for the Sweet 16, but perhaps more importantly has Oklahoma still alive for the championship game, a pick only he and terraorca share, except that terraorca picked Michigan State as his champion whereas George95 has them losing to North Carolina, who is also still alive. Of course, this is all moot if North Carolina plays Kansas, kevinatilusa's champion.

At the bottom of the standings, we also have some bad news, as we officially lost our first competitor from the race. ozzz2002 went out on a limb and picked a completely unique Final Four, and it didn't end up paying off this year. He's lost 3 of his Final Four already, with 6 Notre Dame slated to play 13 Stephen F. Austin tomorrow. His MPP of 174 would put him tied for 5th in the current standings, not counting games that he shares with anyone else. Godspeed next year!

11-seeds were one of the big stories in the first round, with 3 finding victory and two of them (Wichita State and Gonzaga) with previous tournament success. 11 Wichita State found itself in action today against 3 Miami (FL), and it didn't start particularly well for them. The Shockers scored 6 points in the first 11:30, and managed to only be down 13 at half thanks to a protracted scoreless streak by Miami midway through the half. Another one hit in the 2nd half, and Wichita State pounced. A 38-21 Miami lead turned into a 43-42 Wichita advantage, but that run seemed to take all the energy they had. Miami took the lead again shortly afterwards, and though it was closed to 2 in the final minutes, they were never threatened towards the end and walked out as winners 65-57.

The 12-seeds that played so well in the first round both fell flat today. 12 Yale found itself wildly mismatched against 4 Duke, and found themselves down 27 during the first half. The Blue Devils took their foot off the gas in the 2nd half, actually allowing the gap to close to 3, but Yale never scored again and lost 71-64. 12 Arkansas-Little Rock fought well with 4 Iowa State for 15 minutes, but the closest they came in the second half was to be down 9 points, and lost 78-61 without a real fight.

5 Indiana and 4 Kentucky was the most anticipated matchup of the day, as two rivals faced off for the Sweet 16. The game was hotly contested for the first 33 minutes, as the largest lead at any point up to then was 7 points held twice by Kentucky. However, a scoreless 2.5 minutes was all it took to swing the other direction, because Indiana took a 58-50 lead on an 8-0 run and despite a furious comeback attempt from 66-57 to 68-65, the Hoosiers held on to win 73-67.

9 Butler fought the good fight with 1 Virginia for the first 31 minutes of the game, but couldn't stay close enough as the Cavaliers erupted for 54 second half points. 1 Kansas demolished 9 Connecticut in the first half, going up by 24. Long scoreless streaks allowed Connecticut to pull within 9, but never posed a threat and the Jayhawks won 73-61. 3 The flip side of the 11-seeds really hit Utah, who never came within a possession of the lead after 8:56 left in the first half, and were down by as many as 30 to 11 Gonzaga, with the final score at 82-59. Finally, 1 North Carolina toyed with 9 Providence for the first 25 minutes of the game, but went up by as many as 22 in the second half and won 85-66.

With that, half of the Sweet 16 field is set. Only 2 tippers: dg_dave and srini701, have 7 live picks for tomorrow, and both require one upset to max out. dg_dave needs 7 Iowa and srini701 will require 8 St. Josephs to move on. We could see some turnover at the top of the standings if certain upsets happen, so stay tuned, because this one isn't close to being decided.

And boy, was I right on this!!

I'm all but mathematically eliminated already...oh well, maybe next year.

As for the 15th different winner...YEP!!! We have to keep one streak alive!

For 14 years, this competition has run, and 13 of those have all had the possibility of a champion returning to his or her perch atop the leaderboard to reclaim the mantle of victory. However, none have been able to do so in all of this time.

And for the 15th consecutive year, we will have a new champion when this tournament ends. Only 2 rounds have been played, but every single repeat champion has been mathematically eliminated thanks to shared picks with the current leader and prohibitive favorite kevinatilusa. There are only 4 tippers with a chance to win. kevinatilusa has an 8-point lead, which would under normal circumstances be easily surmountable with 4 rounds left to play, but these are nowhere near normal circumstances.

yoyoandcigs sits in 2nd place, only 8 points behind the leader. His max points possible (MPP) is 245, well above kevinatilusa's current score of 206. However, they share so many picks from here on out that the only possible way he can win is the following scenario:
1. Oregon goes to the Final Four (making up 9 points and putting him in the lead), AND
2. Kansas does not win the national championship game, AND
3. Iowa State beats Virginia, AND
4. North Carolina does not make the national championship game.

LeoDaVinci is in third, 14 points back, with an MPP only 9 points back from kevinatilusa. However, thanks to the enlarged gap and their shared picks, LeoDaVinci cannot win if any of the following scenarios occur:
1. Wisconsin beats Notre Dame, OR
2. Oklahoma goes to the Final Four, OR
3. Any 2 of the following:
...(a) Virginia beats Iowa State
...(b) North Carolina makes the national championship game
...(c) Duke loses before the Final Four
...(d) Miami (FL) beats Villanova

Finally, 2tough4u in 6th has a very unique bracket that includes Maryland beating Texas A&M in the Final Four. He will not win in the following scenarios:
1. Maryland loses before the Final Four
2. Maryland doesn't make the national championship game AND Texas A&M loses before the Final Four
3. Texas A&M loses to Oklahoma
4. North Carolina makes the national championship game AND Duke beats Oregon
If Maryland does in fact beat Texas A&M in the Final Four, Virginia beats Iowa State, North Carolina makes the national championship game, AND Oregon beats Duke, it will go to tiebreaker.

There could be more complicated scenarios, but I believe most are covered. The closest returning champion, themonarch in 4th, is 24 points back and can only gain points if Iowa State and Villanova win in the Sweet 16, which is 11 points. N-Bomb is in 7th currently with the 3rd-highest MPP overall, but is 26 points back and can only gain 5 points on the lead if Villanova wins their next game.

As for the games today, you may see that 7 favorites won and think it was a relatively straightforward day of basketball. You would have been right for a couple hours, as 2 Villanova thrashed 7 Iowa. They were leading by 25 at halftime, and expanded it out to 34 by the time they took their collective foot off the gas and won by a measly 19 points.

That's when things got out of hand. 14 Stephen F. Austin, fresh off of their upset win over 3 West Virginia, found themselves against 6 Notre Dame. One interesting stat is that Notre Dame's Rex Pflueger scored 2 points, but we'll get to that later. The first time either team had a lead of more than 5 points was more than halfway through the 2nd half at 62-55 Notre Dame, but Stephen F. Austin tied the game at 64 shortly thereafter. With just over 2 minutes left, SFA took a 75-70 lead, but couldn't find a way to score again. Notre Dame managed to close the game to 75-74, and got the ball back with 23 seconds left. This is where the stat mentioned earlier comes into play, because at this time, Pflueger had 0 points on the game. After 2 missed shots, he grabbed the rebound and tipped the ball in with 1.7 seconds left, and Notre Dame won 76-75.

2 Oklahoma played closely with 10 VCU for most of the game, but was never seriously threatened for the lead at the end of the game. 10 Syracuse easily handled 15 Middle Tennessee 75-50. 5 Maryland took care of 13 Hawaii also without much trouble 73-60.

11 Northern Iowa looked to be on their way to an easy victory over 3 Texas A&M when things got very, very strange. With 44 seconds left, the Panthers hit 2 free throws and went up 12 points at 69-57. Texas A&M hit a layup a few seconds later to close it to 10. Pressure on the inbounds pass caused an immediate turnover, and A&M capitalized with another 2 points. Then there was another turnover in the backcourt, followed by a dunk, making it 69-63 with 21.7 seconds left. Yet another turnover left Texas A&M with an open look for 3, which they hit, making it 69-66 with 20 seconds left. A deep inbounds pass gave Northern Iowa a free layup, giving some breathing room at 71-66, but Texas A&M immediately responded by sprinting down and hitting a layup while being fouled in the process. At 71-69 with 12 seconds left, NIU inbounded into the corner where their player was immediately trapped. He tried to throw the ball off the opponent to get another inbounds pass, but he missed, Texas A&M recovered the ball, and hit another layup to tie the game at 71 after a 14-2 run in 44 seconds. Seemingly unfazed, Northern Iowa got out to an early lead in overtime, but A&M hit a game-tying jumper with 8 seconds left, sending the game to second overtime tied at 83. There, it was finally Texas A&M earning a 4-point lead that they managed to hold, and went soaring into the Sweet 16 after an amazing comeback.

Not to be outdone, 7 Wisconsin found themselves down 58-49 following a 9-0 run midway through the 2nd half against 2 Xavier. With 4:22 left and down 6, they held Xavier scoreless for nearly 4 minutes themselves, when a layup made it 63-60 in favor of the Musketeers. With 13 seconds left, Bronson Koenig hit a deep 3-pointer to tie the game up at 63. Xavier turned it over with 5 seconds left, leading to a Wisconsin timeout and inbounds pass near mid-court. With the ball sent into the corner, Koenig again put up a contested 3-pointer, and once again hit, this time as time expired, giving the Badgers a 66-63 victory.

Finally, 1 Oregon found themselves with the prospect of becoming the fourth #1 seed to make the Sweet 16, something that hadn't happened since 2012. With 5:33 left, that possibility seemed to be turning unlikely, as 8 St. Josephs went out to a 58-51 lead. However, an Oregon 7-0 run put them right back in the game, and following a 3-pointer to go up 64-61, late free throws iced the game for the Ducks.

Only one opportunity for a Cinderella remains in the bracket, and it will be the winner of 10 Syracuse and 11 Gonzaga on Friday. Despite that, this tournament will be remembered for its sheer number of upsets and mayhem caused during the first two rounds of the Tournament.

In the last round, we identified several scenarios for three tippers behind leader kevinatilusa to surpass him. One of those, 2tough4u, was disappointed by his unlikely bracket failing him, as both 5 Maryland and 3 Texas A&M lost. yoyoandcigs passed phase 1 of his plan with 1 Oregon progressing towards the Final Four, but 1 Kansas marches on and an immediate test happens this coming round as he needs 3 Iowa State to beat 1 Virginia. LeoDaVinci also remains alive, however he needs both 6 Notre Dame and Iowa State to win in the 2nd half of the Sweet 16, and 1 North Carolina to lose in the next 3 games.

With the scenarios for first place just a scroll upwards away, we now move to those scenarios for filling out the podium spots. Obviously, since kevinatilusa can only be passed by 2 tippers, he will end up with a medal no matter what. The other spots are not so certain. In the battle between the other 2 contenders for the gold, yoyoandcigs holds a clear advantage. However, LeoDaVinci will pass him under the following circumstances:
If Oregon beats Oklahoma:
1. Kansas wins the national championship, AND
2. Notre Dame beats Wisconsin
...(a) #2 does not happen but #1 does, it will go to tiebreaker

If Oklahoma beats Oregon:
1. Kansas wins the national championship, OR
2. Notre Dame beats Wisconsin

The next 2 in the standings cannot finish in the top 3. themonarch can only make up 7 points on LeoDaVinci and yoyoandcigs, but he is currently behind third place by 11 points. gtho4 is down 17 points to yoyoandcigs and can only make up 14 of those; while he is down 12 points to LeoDaVinci and can only make up 9.

N-Bomb cannot win the gold or silver medal, but is in play for bronze. He cannot pass LeoDaVinci, since he can only make up 10 points and is behind by 12. However, he can pass yoyoandcigs if the following occurs:
1. Virginia beats Iowa State, AND
2. Oklahoma beats Oregon, AND
3. Kansas wins the national championship

The next 6 tippers - dg_dave, illiniman14, terraorca, 2tough4u, srini701, and toocool4u - will all be shut out of the podium as well. However, we're not done. That is because there could be an epic comeback in the making at 13th place. George95 didn't buy into the Michigan State hype as much as most of us, and has plenty of unique picks to show for it. While he can't win the comp, he can finish as high up as 2nd.
George95 will pass yoyoandcigs if:
1. Virginia beats Iowa State, AND
2. North Carolina beats Oklahoma in the national championship game

Somewhat similarly, he will beat LeoDaVinci if:
1. Wisconsin beats Notre Dame, AND
2. North Carolina beats Oklahoma in the national championship game

With that out of the way, on to what will be a quick recap of the games, since nothing groundbreaking or surprising really happened today. 2 Villanova started out hot against 3 Miami (FL), but the Hurricanes were able to fight back to 31-30 late in the first half. A minute later, it was a Villanova 6-point lead, and the 6 points they led at halftime was the closest that Miami came in the entire 2nd half, as Villanova crushed them 92-69 on their way to the Elite 8.

3 Texas A&M also started out hot against former conference rival 2 Oklahoma, but their story did not end similarly. After going down 15-9, the Sooners went on a 31-9 run and at halftime led 45-26. The Aggies crawled back to within 11 at one point in the 2nd half, but never posed a serious threat and Oklahoma coasted to a 77-63 victory.

5 Maryland played competitively with 1 Kansas for a majority of the game unlike the two losing teams above, but it still didn't matter. After the game was tied 43-43 early in the 2nd half, the Jayhawks turned it on and went on a 16-5 run that they never relinquished. The lead grew to as much as 16 and Kansas won by that margin, 79-63.

1 Oregon and 4 Duke were tied at 31-31 late in the 1st half, but if you read the recaps for the last 3 games, you know where this is headed. The Ducks ended the half on a 5-0 run and made it a 15-4 run into the 2nd half, and the game was essentially over then. They played very evenly from that point out, and Duke never closed to within 2 possessions at any point, giving Oregon an 82-68 victory and knocking out the defending champions.

Three rounds are in the books, and three rounds are yet to commence, but no matter what happens, kevinatilusa will sit atop the pile as the 2016 March Madness champion! He has been there from the start since hitting 15/16 on the first day of the tournament, and has never left the perch on top of the leaderboard for one day. In 2017, he will join the legions of tippers attempting to repeat in this comp (surely only to be spurned by cruel fate).

LeoDaVinci meanwhile takes over 2nd place over yoyoandcigs. He will maintain that spot if 1 Kansas wins the national championship or if 2 Oklahoma wins in the Elite 8. Thanks to 6 Notre Dame's victory in the Sweet 16, George95 cannot overtake him.

The battle for third place is a little more open. The only way LeoDaVinci can finish third is if yoyoandcigs overtakes him for second with an 1 Oregon win in the Elite 8 followed by Kansas failing to win the championship. N-Bomb remains in play thanks to a 1 Virginia victory in the Sweet 16, and now needs both an Oklahoma win over Oregon and a Kansas national championship to finish third. Meanwhile, back in 12th, George95 still remains in play for the podium if North Carolina beats Oklahoma in the final.

The second day of the Sweet 16 started much like the first. 4 Iowa State kept it close for 44 seconds when they cut the 1 Virginia lead to 3-2, and then it was over. A Cavalier 14-1 run put them up for good. Iowa State was able to close the lead to 7 in the 2nd half, but Virginia was never really threatened and won 84-71.

7 Wisconsin-6 Notre Dame finally gave us a close game, but at what cost? The first half ended with the Badgers up 23-19 in a very difficult half to watch. Wisconsin jumped out to a 34-26 lead in the 2nd half, but the Irish closed the gap with an 8-0 run. From there, the largest lead at any point before the last minute was a 5-point lead by Wisconsin. With 28 seconds left, Wisconsin hit a 3-pointer to go up 56-53. Notre Dame responded with a quick layup, and then forced a steal after the ensuing inbounds pass, giving them another layup to go up 57-56. A missed Wisconsin shot on the other end allowed Notre Dame to hit 2 free throws. As they rushed up the court to get a game-tying attempt off, the Wisconsin guard got the ball stolen away again, and two more free throws ended the game 61-56 Fighting Irish.

In the matchup none of us saw coming, 11 Gonzaga got out to a hot start, going up 18-8 on 10 Syracuse. A 10-2 run later would make it 23-20, and for nearly 6 minutes including time in both halves, the Bulldogs went scoreless, allowing Syracuse to take the lead 34-29. a resurgence gave Gonzaga a 57-48 lead with 6:28 left, but their offensive woes struck again. In that 6:28, Gonzaga only managed another 3 points, and the Orange slowly crawled back to take the lead with 22 seconds left, and walked out with a 63-60 win.

1 North Carolina was more keen on keeping with the theme of blowouts. They allowed 5 Indiana to tie the game at 3 and 8, but an 8-0 run to make it 16-8 gave us an idea of what was to come. The Hoosiers managed to close the lead to 18-15, but a 17-4 run meant the Tarheels were in business. They scored 52 in the first half, and another 49 points in the 2nd half sealed the game 101-86.

Not too many updates on the leaderboard after the Elite Eight. kevinatilusa's chances to win went from 100% to 100%, while LeoDaVinci's odds for second went from 'very likely' to 100% as well. The battle for third rages on, with yoyoandcigs taking bronze in 87.5% of available scenarios, and George95 taking the remainder.

1 Oregon seemed very much in their game against 2 Oklahoma for just over a minute into the game. With the game tied 5-5 though, Oklahoma went on a 10-2 run. Oregon managed to get the lead down to 17-13, but that's the last hope they would have at the lead. Buddy Hield went off for 37 points as Oklahoma romped out to a 48-30 halftime lead, and only had it reduced to 13 at its minimum in the 2nd half until the waning seconds, meaning the Sooners easily rolled into the Final Four 80-68.

1 Kansas, the favorite to win the tournament since 2 Michigan State lost in the first round, found themselves in their first real challenge of the tournament with 2 Villanova. After an even 10 minutes, Kansas had a 7-minute scoreless drought, allowing the Wildcats to go up by 9. By halftime, it was down to 5 and Kansas actually took the lead up to 45-40 in the 2nd half. Offensive woes struck again, and Villanova went on a 10-0 run, a lead they would not give up. Villanova went 8/8 on free throws in the final minute of the game and sealed it away 64-59.

The Cinderella story of this tournament, 10 Syracuse, found themselves leading very early, but then falling flat in the first half against 1 Virginia. The Cavaliers rolled out to a 35-21 lead at halftime, and continued their dominance until it was 54-39 with 9:30 left. Then something funny happened. Syracuse got a dunk, got a defensive rebound, and another layup. Virginia responded with their own layup, so all seemed fine. Syracuse hit a couple free throws, then forced a turnover, hit another shot, forced another turnover, hit 2 more free throws, and it was suddenly 56-49. Virginia got a shot to fall, but it was too late to stem the tide. Syracuse hit a 3-pointer, stole the ball back, and hit another 3. Two more missed shots were followed by Syracuse rebounds and layups, followed by another missed shot, rebound, and Syracuse 3-pointer, to the point they had a 62-58 lead. All in all, Syracuse managed a 25-4 run in the 2nd half over 6 minutes and continued their run through the tournament into the Final Four 68-62.

The last matchup of the Elite Eight, another ACC matchup between 1 North Carolina and 6 Notre Dame, wouldn't be quite so dramatic. After an even first half, North Carolina made the first move by going up 11 points early in the 2nd half. Notre Dame responded with a 12-0 run, but that was the last shot they had. North Carolina went on a 12-0 run of their own in response, and held that lead consistently to the end, winning 88-74.

The uniqueness of this comp never fails to amaze me. The only other person with a chance at 3rd is not 4th but 10th!

Hi all, this is the Yoyo. Looks like y'all have a pretty fun site going on. Stumbled into it by accident, snooping around, glad I did. What a crazy tourney! Thought I was the cock of the walk day 1, HA!! Day 2 brought me back to earth like a Colin Kaepernick bomb. Congrats to the new champ, and a special shoutout to Illini; what an incredible write-up. Well done.

@ Identical Final Four picks.
# Another set of identical Final Four picks
& Third set of identical Final Four picks
* this team has been eliminated.

The Final Four has come and gone, and kevinatilusa managed to hold on to his guaranteed victory. LeoDaVinci comes in 2nd for the 2nd straight year and the 5th time in this comp, also doing so in 2006, 2008, and 2010. yoyoandcigs makes an impressive debut with the bronze medal as well. George95's hopes of finishing on the podium were shot when Villanova decided to play spoiler, and they did so all the way to the national championship.

The Final Four itself was quite boring. In fact, if 2 Villanova hadn't scored a single point in the 1st half of their game against 2 Oklahoma, they would have still won. The Wildcats walked into the arena as a 2-point favorite, and walked out as 44-point victors in the largest blowout in Final Four history. 1 North Carolina made similar work of 10 Syracuse on their side of the bracket. After an even first 12 minutes, the Tarheels won the rest of the game by 17, and waltzed into the championship game 83-66.

To make up for those game, the national championship was one of the greatest in the history of the tournament. Both teams took spells atop the national rankings during the season, and they played like they deserved to be there. The first time either team had a lead of more than 2 possessions happened with just 40 seconds left in the first half, when North Carolina went up 39-32, but Villanova got it down to 44-40 in the 2nd half and proceeded to go on a 13-2 run. They narrowly held the lead for the next 3 minutes, and then had a 7-0 run to go up 67-57, the largest lead at any point in the game. Undeterred, North Carolina went on their own 7-0 run to make it 67-64 with 3:44 left. Choosing to go scoreless for just over 2 minutes, North Carolina missed some opportunities but after a 3-pointer and a jumper, were only down 70-69 with 1:07 left. From there, Villanova hit a couple free throws, was answered with a layup to make it 72-71, and then another foul and another 2 free throws made it 74-71 with 13 seconds left. After coming down the court, Marcus Paige went up for a contested 3-pointer, double-clutched in mid-air, and sent the tying shot right through the net with 4.7 seconds left. Tied 74-74, Villanova took their last timeout to draw up a play. Star Ryan Arcidiacono dribbled quickly down the floor and handed it off to Kris Jenkins with just under 2 seconds left. He put up a 3-pointer just past the arc, and in it sailed as the buzzer sounded, giving the Villanova Wildcats their first national championship since 1985, and the first buzzer-beater in a national championship game since NC State's miraculous run in 1983.

And with that, we put to bed another amazing tournament filled with upsets and intrigue, and we look forward to 2017, where just perhaps we could see our first repeat winner.
