Ren, I believe I had St Piran's Day noted in my browser's reminder app (I'm Cornish be descent), but it seems to have got lost when I had to reload the browser some time ago.

For me, March 17th is the feast of St Gertrude of Nivelles, the patron saint of cats, and so I'll be toasting her with a glass of Belgian beer, although I admit I'd probably find Guinness more to my taste.

Happy St Patrick's Day to all it applies to.

Strange how the Irish are passionate about their saint's day, the Welsh are passionate about their saint's day but the average English person doesn't know the date of St George's Day. I don't know about the Scots with St Andrew's Day, whether they are passionate about it or not.

Sue.............Isn't it time we had an ENGLISH Patron Saint? Or, more correctly, reinstate the one we DID have until 1400?

It seems we share St George with no less than 17 other countries, which I suppose is an indication of him being a popular chap and a good egg all round. Until Richard the Lionheart got all keen on this foreign Saint, we had a native born Saint all of our own, but the Normans were keen to sweep away Saxon influence.

I speak of the martyred King of the East Angles - KING (later Saint) EDMUND. His "day" is November 20th and his flag a white dragon on a red background.

The fact I am a Suffolk native, is in no way showing bias! blush

You could argue that St Patrick is an English saint... no one is exactly sure where he came from but it was somewhere in Britain and definitely not Ireland. Cumbria seems most likely and that's in England. laugh
