1. wwe84 2. Howie72 3. chogobad
wwe84 and Howie72 were the only tippers bold enough to take Danny Willett, who only had 1 previous top-10 finish in a major at last year’s British Open. That pick propelled them to the top, and wwe84’s pick of now-favorite Jordan Spieth put him over the top. Despite Spieth’s collapse, he held on to a 6-stroke win and picked up the first gold of the 2016 golf season. Congratulations!
The battle for the rest of the podium between Howie72, chogobad, and LeoDaVinci all came down to their top picks. Howie72 picked the winner, and although he was brought down by Louis Oosthuizen’s 3-over, Willett’s 5-under kept him one stroke ahead to take silver. chogobad would have been the favorite for second place until Spieth’s collapse, but held on to go exactly even between his four golfers for third place. Finally, LeoDaVinci needed JB Holmes to make a big last-round run, and while he shot a four-under on Sunday, it wasn’t enough to make up the difference for Rory McIlroy’s Sunday woes, and he took fourth.
Two weeks ago, Danny Willett wasn’t sure if he’d play at the Masters, with his son’s due date on April 10 – the day scheduled for the final round at the Masters. His son was born early, and Willett became the last golfer to arrive in Augusta. Four rounds later, he became the last golfer left at Augusta, as he delivered a 5-under tournament for a 2-shot win.
The first 63 holes of the tournament were all Jordan Spieth. The young phenom led nearly from the word go with an opening round 66, but gave 2 strokes back on a windy Friday and kept a 1-stroke lead on Rory McIlroy. Up by 4 strokes on the field going into #17 on Saturday, he ended the round with a bogey and double bogey to fall to within a stroke of Smylie Kaufman. By the end of the front 9 on Sunday, he lead ballooned to 5 strokes over Willett, when it all came crashing down. Bogeys on 10 and 11 left him 2 shots up after a Willett birdie, followed by 2 shots into the water on 12, leaving him a quadruple bogey and suddenly 3 strokes back. He fought back with 2 birdies over 3 holes, but could never challenge Willett’s 5-under when he entered the clubhouse.
Kaufman had a worse Sunday, being paired with Spieth in the final group on Sunday. He started with a birdie on #2, but then finished the front 9 at 3-over, and filled the back 9 with 5 bogeys, a double bogey, and only one birdie to temper them, as he finished tied for 29th at 7-over.
Willett became only the 2nd Englishman to win the Masters, preceded only by Nick Faldo in 1996. Not only was April 10 the day his son was due to be born, but was also his wife’s birthday, and she described his win as the “best birthday present ever.”
The All-Not Taken Team included: Lee Westwood, Paul Casey, Matthew Fitzpatrick, and Soren Kjeldsen, who together put up a score of 1149, which would’ve been good enough for second in our comp.
And with that we come to the end of the 2016 Masters, and look forward to the U.S. Open starting on June 14 at Oakmont. |
