If you had to pick the greatest unsolved mystery of historical importance, what would it be?

The disappearance of the colonists at Roanoke?

The disintegration of eastern Mediterranean cultures around 1000 BC?

Something else entirely?

And what do you think happened?

A few that I'm curious about:

The disappearance of the inhabitants on Easter Island...and an explanation on how exactly they created those sculptured heads...what are they called...maui?

Another interesting one...how were the pyramids actually built...there's always speculation about that.

Who were the Hyksos of ancient egypt? Were they related somehow to the Hebrews?

Did the ancient Xia dynasty of China actually exist? Chinese historiography insists yes, but where's the evidence?

Where did the Basque people really come from? How is it possible that the language is unrelated to any other in existence?

There are lots of others...I have to go and think!

I would be curious to find out where Elvis is living now? LOL...but I have studied Egyptian culture and the pyramids, like Jazz stated would probably be on the top of my list somewhere. There is also the whole lost city of Atlantis subject...Who knows?

I just want to know who "they" are, and why we care so much about what "they" say.

This is a BIG can of worms...there are so many thousand different historical mysteries that the list would never end!!

Like exactly what is Stonehenge and who really built it?

What happened to the people of Manchu Pichu and why did they leave their fortress?

Was Christ really crucified? (I'd say this was a biggie )

This probably won't mean much to most people, but maybe someone out there has an opinion. Did Vaclav Hanka really find the Dvur Kralove manuscript. or did he write it himself? Still wondering and probably always will be.

I would like to find Black Beard's Treasure--since he doesn't need it anymore. Supposedly he said it was buried only where he and the devil himself knew. If the devil doesn't have any objections I might as well have it.

You know, since I'm from NC, it'd be nice to know what happened to Virginia Dare and the Lost Colony.

I have just found this thread, and would like to second Jazz
on the mystery of where the Basque people originated.

I have met people who speak the language - Euskadi (or is it Euskal, jazz?) and seen it written (in, of all places, TV guides here in Spain) and it really is unlike anything else.
