The title to this forum is History and Geography, and all the posts I’ve seen have been about history. Nerthus, minch and profchallenger, as geography editors, I was wondering if you have any ideas how to incorporate geography into the forum. Do you envision a travel log style or possibly discussions on physical geography? Does anyone else have any ideas?

How about: What is the one place that you would love to visit if you had the chance?

Or alternatively: Which location would you say has been the coolest (as in excellent, fascinating, etc.) place that you have ever visited?

I assumed physical geography (earth sciences) rather than travel destinations when Terry posted the new site. It fits rather nicely with history in that both deal with facts rather than opinion.
But, that's my opinion......

Facts?? As in..... what was the one historic event that YOU think had the biggest impact on mankind, etc, etc...sounds quite subjective to me!

I agree in part, however, some discussion on Plate Tectonic theory might be rivetting, but I don't necessarily think that it should preclude us from also discussing geographical travel locations. Actually, most of the quizzes submitted to the geography category from what I can see (correct me if I'm wrong) tend to center on what a visitor to a particular country might see or experience.

What about historical significances on the favourite places you have been or want to go to?
That would cover both aspects quite nicely.

For example: Where did you travel on an archaelogical dig?

Cheers

Ditto on what the tall guy said. Though he's from another part of Pangea, we still get along on a tectonic level. Or should I say a Teutonic one? We're probably more like the volcanic reaction you do in science with vinegar and baking soda!

I propose Haleakala crater on Maui as being pretty surreal, Death Valley of course, Waimea Canyon on the island of Kauai, the great white Byte in Australia is stupendous too.
The Oracle of Delphi chose her place really well too.
The Sierra Nevadas and the Alps are both tops mountainwise.
Ah I know one that impressed me, the paintings on the side of the rock in Anuradahpura in Sri Lanka. That has to be one of the most lovely things I've ever seen, but you can't have the fear of heights.

Can we do our next holiday together? It sounds as though we're like-minded. I've done the Bight, and Sri Lanka and a goodly number of other places including Turkey, Mexico, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Russian backblocks.

From what I've heard Copper Canyon is supposed to be quite good and picturesque, and walking Franz Josef Glacier in NZ might not be a bad one to try.

As a passionate traveller I'm open to suggestions.

Cheers

I don't think that there is much to discuss in physical geography. It's the other aspects, historical geography, urban geography, cultural geography that should provide topics to comment on.
However, let's see if someone can prove me wrong about physical geography not provoking discussion! I can probably think of one myself ...hmmmmmm

I knew I'd mispelled the Bight! I have a great picture of it with the little tiny bus on the top of the most dramatic cliff I've ever witnessed.
If I said the Franz Josef Glacier was impressive indeed, you would not say, "so she's been there, seen that, done that?" I have but I think I distinctly remember being so damn cold in those cabins we rented. We didn't pack much with us. New Zealand is a beautiful place.

I think I was trying to think of truly exciting geographical locations I'd seen where man had influenced them and yet hadn't spoiled them terribly.

The painters of the sublime had it right when they showed you how puny we were in the face of nature!

Minch so can we indeed speak about this here?

I know I know, the best autumn I've ever seen is on the East Coast of the United States. Vermont, New England in general. Upstate New York. It's a full five senses experience, if you add maple syrup or apples!
I've never seen such beautiful leaves!
