Ladies, can you imagine being pregnant for nearly two years?! That's how long female elephants are pregnant for and keepers at Melbourne Zoo have announced they've started monitoring Asian elephant, Num-Oi, as she enters the final stages of her second pregnancy. After the tragic death of her first calf, it will be nice to see her with a new baby. Hope all goes well. She's expected to give birth some time between now and the end of May.

Just heard Num-Oi's baby has finally arrived! It's a girl! However, the calf has Congenital Carpal Flexture, a rare condition that prevents the straitening of the front legs which, in turn, prevents the calf from standing.

Terrible news! Num-Oi's calf died this morning from a blood infection

Oh, dear. That is sad. You mentioned that her first calf died, as well. Was that also a blood infection? Maybe there is a problem that can be fixed?

Num-Oi's first calf, 11-month-old Sanook, died in a tragic accident in 2013. The elephants like to play with car tyres suspended from ropes around their enclosure. Sanook died from strangulation after getting his head stuck in one.
