I like the name of the Scottish island of Muckle Flugga. Then there are the adjacent Hebridean islands of Rum, Eigg and Muck. If I ever get the offer of a peerage,I shall choose Muck as my territorial designation. Then, if anyone says "Who do you think you are? Lord Muck?", I can say "Yes, and I am supported in my belief by the Garter King of Arms". Like North Carolina, the UK also has its share of devilish sites. They include: The Devil's Arrows, a set of monoliths near Boroughbridge in Yorkshire; The Devil's Cheesewring,a set of stones in Devon said to resemble a gigantic cheese-press; The Devil's Den,a cromlech near Marlborough in Wiltshire; The Devil's Beef Tub, a depression in the hills near Moffat in Scotland; The Devil's Punch Bowl, a similar hollow near Hindhead in Surrey; The Devil's Frying Pan, a rock basin in Cornwall that fills up with sea-water at high tide; The Devil's Chimney, a rock pillar near Cheltenham; The Devil's Kitchen,a fissure in the mountainside at Glyder Fawr in North wales; The Devil's Dyke, a ravine in the South Downs to the north of Brighton; The Devil's Elbow,a double hairpin bend on the road near Braemar in Scotland; The Devil's Throat, the entrance to Cromer Bay in Norfolk; Devil's Bridge in Cardiganshire; The Devil's Nostrils,a pair of caverns separated by a pillar on the island of Mainland in the Shetlands. There's also a cave in the Peak District called the Devil's Hole, but I believe it once had a rather coarser name

Well, most people up here have English ancestors, maybe that's where some of these Devilish names come from? (I'd be right at home over there!) I believe there are about 30 Devilish North Carolina names. One of my favorites is: Kill Devil Hill on the coast at Kitty Hawk, NC. And I have always wondered who thought up the name the French Broad River?? I do like the name Wiseman's View, up near Morganton, NC. Makes you feel Smart, doesn't it? The Tar River near Tarboro, NC, sounds so darn unattractive! For the religious, we have Mt. Olive. (home of Mt. Olive pickles). For buffs of the old Andy Griffith television series, there's Mt. Airy, Siler City, Mt. Pilot, and Raleigh, NC. We have the town of Black Mountain, and mountains called Bald, Brown, Little, and Grandfather, too. I'm really not a walking encyclpedia on North Carolina--but I have lived here all my life. [ 02-22-2002: Message edited by: LindaC007 ]

I'm not sure I like the picture painted by three UK place names: Upperthong, Upper Bush and Upper Chute. This was followed by Wetwang.

just thought i'd throw a few in from personal experience ...
Burton-in-the-Beans in Midlands (should be sponsored by Heinz) Crapstone in Devon (now that's painful) Six Mile Bottom in Cambridgeshire (now that's huge!)
on the bizarre street names in central birmingham (UK not Al) there's a "Needless Alley" !!
In Herefordshire there is a village that comprises my whole name (i.e. christain & surname) ... but that would be telling !!

Yes, JubJub, there is a Walla Walla, Washington. My neighbor visits her parents there quite a bit. Copago, it's been a long time, but I've been through Humptulips. Other fun Washington names are: Duckabush, Kooskooskie, Nooksack, Tokeland and Snee-Oosh. I've always wanted to visit Mold. Odd as it seems, its in the dry, desertlike part of the state that you don't hear much about. There is a tiny, tiny town called Pysht. Someone who lived nearby told me how it got it's name but I doubt its veracity. Seems some pioneers had been travelling for some time, until all they had left to eat was beans. After several days of beans for breakfast, lunch and dinner, they came to a spot that looked good. They had a meeting and it was decided this would be their new home. One of them spoke up and said, "Well, what should we name this place?" Just then, someone else passed some gas, and Pysht won the vote. ![[Big Grin]](images/icons/laugh.gif)

There's a place in Hampshire too small to be on some national maps called 'Hazeley Bottom'.

Well there's a road in the picturesque hamlet (ahem!) of Doncaster called Butthole Lane... Also, I've always thought that the suburb of Sheffield in which I live sounds more like somewhere out of a Tolkein book: "Nether Edge".
