1. Dizart 2. Howie72 3. ElfTwinkle
Dizart was only 1 of 2 tippers to take US Open winner Dustin Johnson, and that was enough to put him over the top as the winner of our version of the tournament. Congratulations!
Dizart had 2 of his golfers fail to make the cut, and so had to take one of those scores in Patrick Reed. However, with Johnson and Branden Grace, Dizart was able to get 2 of only 6 golfers to finish at even par or better. One stroke behind fell Howie72, who was hurt by Jordan Spieth’s 5-over Sunday, who ended up being his worst golfer. While Howie72’s golfers were more consistent, Dizart got the benefit of the lowest score in the tournament.
The next 4 tippers were only split by 3 strokes. ElfTwinkle came home with the bronze by 2 strokes over George95 on the back of Brooks Koepka, while George95’s pick of Bubba Watson dragged him down off the podium. Outside of Dizart, wwe84 was the next-highest tipper to have to use a golfer who missed the cut, with Phil Mickelson missing out by 1 stroke, but Jason Day and Grace kept him near the podium. He tied with N-Bomb, whose South African-heavy team gave him good, but not great, scores.
As for the tournament, the end of the first round was strangely reminiscent of what the leaderboard would look like entering the final day. After Thursday, Andrew Landry led the tournament, with Dustin Johnson and Lee Westwood 1 back, and a threesome of Scott Piercy, Shane Lowry, and Sergio Garcia 2 back. Rain on Thursday caused the first 3 rounds to be scrunched up into Friday, Saturday, and some of early Sunday.
As play for Round 4 started, Shane Lowry led the field by 4 strokes, and he played with Andrew Landry in the final group. The pressure crushed Landry immediately, and he went 7-over on the front 9. Lowry did not have such a dramatic fall, but did go 3-over on the front 9 while Dustin Johnson, in the group ahead of them, went 1-under. Westwood, playing with Johnson in his group, actually fared worse than Landry, going 8-over in the front 9.
Jim Furyk played a solid Sunday but started too far back to make a real threat. Sergio Garcia, who chogobad probably wishes he had taken now, got to within 2 strokes of the lead (but actually 1 stroke... we’ll get to that), but three consecutive bogeys knocked him back to even for the round and tournament.
The big controversy of the day came about as Johnson was about to tee off on #12. On #5, Johnson’s ball had moved just as he put his putter behind it, but the official at the time said there was no penalty. On the 12th, an official told him a penalty might be assessed, putting the leaderboard in flux. After Lowry birdied #12, Johnson was either up by 1 stroke or tied with Lowry, but nobody really knew. It ended up being a moot point as Lowry bogeyed 3 straight and Johnson won by 4 strokes... until the USGA eventually decided to assess the penalty and he won by 3 strokes.
And now we take a short break until mid-July, when we take a trip across the pond to Royal Troon for the Open Championship. |
