1. ElfTwinkle 2. ozzz2002 3. yoyoandcigs
*- yoyoandcigs won the tiebreaker as his 5th golfer (Justin Rose - 285) to paper_aero's 5th (Hideki Matsuyama - cut at 150 for a 300).
Two golfers ended way ahead of the rest of the field in this year’s Open Championship, and only one of them (Phil Mickelson) was chosen by two tippers, which means they shared the top two spots. Between them, ElfTwinkle blew out to a tremendous 8-stroke victory. Congratulations!
ElfTwinkle shared 3 golfers with ozzz2002, and all of them ended up being in their final foursomes. The gold came down to a Spanish matchup between ElfTwinkle’s Sergio Garcia against ozzz2002’s Rafael-Cabrera Bello. Garcia held a 3-shot lead going into Sunday, and shot 5 strokes better on the final day.
ozzz2002 never had any threat of slipping to third. While yoyoandcigs picked the best 5-man team overall, the lack of one very low score kept him from vying for the top of the podium. He and paper_aero tied for third, but paper_aero was surprised by Hideki Matsuyama’s poor first two rounds, and he missed the cut, while yoyoandcigs’ fifth golfer, Justin Rose, but together a solid tournament and ended tied for 22nd, giving him the tiebreaker.
Phil Mickelson started off the tournament by shooting for the record books. Nobody has ever shot 62 in any round at a major, and heading into #18 on Thursday he was 8-under par (at a par 71), and found himself with another birdie put on the final hole, but it went just wide and looped out of the hole. On Friday, Henrik Stenson threw himself in the mix by shooting a 65, placing those two in the final grouping on Saturday.
The weather on Friday and Saturday turned ridiculous with wind and rain, so scores were a little higher on those days. Stenson took a slight advantage with a 68 to Mickelson’s 70, and took a 1-stroke lead heading into Sunday. Keegan Bradley and Søren Kjeldsen started the day only 3 strokes back of Mickelson, but by the end of Sautrday, Bill Haas was the closest contender 6 strokes back.
Sunday was just good old fashioned fun. Mickelson took the lead back over on #1 with a birdie to Stenson’s bogey. Stenson birdied the next 2 holes, earning the lead back again at #3. Mickelson eagled #4, earning a tie after Stenson birdied. They matched the next 3 holes, but Stenson pulled out a birdie on #8 to hold the lead at the turn. Both birdied #10, but Stenson bogeyed #11, leaving another tie at -16. On #14, Stenson finally pulled away, birdieing 3 straight holes and #18 while Mickelson was only able to pull off a birdie on #16, giving Stenson the victory by 3 strokes at -20.
The All-Not Taken Team was obviously headlined by Stenson’s 264, and with J.B. Holmes (3rd), Steve Stricker (4th), and Tyrrell Hatton (T-5th), the resulting 1101 score would have easily won this comp – so don’t be scared to go out on a limb!
The major season winds up at Baltusrol in New Jersey at the PGA Championship on July 28, and we hope to see you back there! |

Great work, Illi! And congrats to the Elf. 16 shots between first and third is amazing.
