1. wwe84 2. gtho4 3. George95
wwe84 put his picks in first, and he ended in first place. He chose two golfers completely unique from the rest of the field, and both of them (Padraig Harrington and Webb Simpson) had top-15 finishes, leaving him with a cozy 3-stroke win. Congrats!
Four tippers finished below 1,100 total strokes, and the top 3 all chose Jason Day, who finished second, and Phil Mickelson, who finished tied for 33rd. gtho4 edged out George95 for silver, as both avoided the trap of picking Dustin Johnson, and instead gtho4 chose Adam Scott as his other top-10 pick, and Scott ended with a top-20 finish. George95 took Sergio Garcia, new into the top 10 rankings, but he failed to make the cut after an impressive Open Championship.
Dizart also impressively finished below 1,100 strokes, and did so with a group of two unique golfers and two other unpopular picks. Avoiding Jason Day may have been the downfall, however, as the ten strokes between he and Rickie Fowler would have meant a gold medal.
The rest of the field didn’t even come close to those top 4. N-Bomb and paper_aero finished 11 strokes behind Dizart, and started a trend of every other tipper having to take a score from a golfer who failed to make the cut. Dustin Johnson, picked by 11/13 tippers, did the most damage and ended up being the cut score from all 11. Several top players also failed to make the cut, leaving those tippers in the dust behind the podium.
This year’s PGA Championship was the story of Jimmy Walker. At the end of Thursday, he held the lead by 1 stroke at -5. Friday saw him finishing tied with Robert Streb at -9, a 2-stroke lead over Day and Emiliano Grillo. The third round was suspended for the most part until Sunday, and when it ended Walker found himself 1 stroke up on Day while Streb fell back to 4 strokes off the lead. While Day tried to make it interesting on Sunday, Walker was too much and finished out with a 1-stroke victory and his first major championship.
The All Not-Taken Team included Walker, Daniel Summerhays, Hideki Matsuyama, and either Martin Kaymer or Robert Streb. Those picks would have netted an impressive 1,079 and a 13-stroke victory.
That ends the 2016 golf major season. With many top golfers staying away from the Olympics, we shall see top competition again when the Masters returns in April 2017! |
