The ten matches in the final qualifying round (aka the play-off round) were completed during the week. The 10 winners will join the 22 teams who were exempt until the group phase. The draw for the group phase took place yesterday. If you've got a few hours to kill and/or have an insomnia attack and can't hit the sack, you can read the complete details of the qualifying rounds and the exemption procedures here : Regulations of the UEFA Champions League 2016-17. Most of the 32 teams in this year's comp are familiar names, but there maybe a few qualifiers whose team names will be alien to most of us (see next post).
The group stage commences on Tuesday 13th September (the first round of the tipping comp), and 19 rounds later the UEFA Champions League Final will be played, after 8½ months, on Saturday 3rd June 2017 at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff (Wales UK). There's a two month mid-winter break, for all of us to grab some R&R, between the last round of the group phase on Tuesday 6th December and the start of the KO Round on Tuesday 14th February 2017. |
Rules: they're the same as last year, and the year before. The rules for this comp are simple: points
default
full-time
upsets
perfect picks
other bonus pts
dead-heats | one point for each correct pick.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours (ineligible for bonus pts),
however, you receive the WS score if it's more than the aways.
picks are H-x-A at full-time; extra time and shootout lotteries are ignored.
if you pick a game solo, you score a bonus point ... or 1 of 2 if we have 12
or more runners, 1 of 3 if we have 18 or more runners.
8/8 scores a bonus point. You also receive a knighthood from Her Majesty.
no one picks a win, whoever picks a draw.
no one picks a draw, whoever picks the upset win.
if you pick all home teams (or all bar one), you're ineligible for bonus pts.
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes;
if they're identical, bonus points will be used. |
Deadline: is always kick-off in the first game of the round. Please don't wait until the death, as this year's comp has two teams from eastern Europe - Russia and the Ukraine (see next post), and there's a good chance you'll get it wrong! If you post your tips 3 hours before the scheduled kick-off time for games in the UK, you should be safe. If that one game has kicked-off when you lodge your picks, you will score zero for that game. We have had multiple winners of this comp, but no-one has won it back-to-back to successfully defend their UEFA title .. PaulE won it last year from George95. A total of 78 teams qualified for this year's competition .. 15 of 41 teams progressed through the qualifying rounds to join the five teams who qualified direct to the ten play-off round games. The 32 teams in this year's group stage: 22 teams qualified direct to the group stage (see list below in the

. Everyone from last year is back for another dose except for the no-show KrivoyRog. We have two new recruits, AlonsoKing and nasty_liar, to make it a field of 18 runners, which is up one from the previous year's 17 runners. Welcome aboard!
Week 1 of 19 saw one of the eight games picked by everyone and one game picked by no-one. The 7-0 thumping of Celtic by Barcelona was picked by everyone except N-Bomb, who was the lone ranger by picking an upset away win.
PaulE and wwe84 scored a bonus point each for picking the upset draw in Switzerland. They join the two weekly winners, gtho4 and toocool4u, to make it a four-way tie out front.
At the other end, Dizart collected the first wooden spoon on offer with picks of 3/8.
The next round has started & finished, as the Manchester City game was rescheduled to today due to a water-logged pitch.

. dg_dave picks 5/8 for the weekly win (it was a solo effort), to climb up into equal 2nd place behind wwe84, who retains his spot at the top of the pile. He didn't participate in our game of musical chairs; he was the only player to retain his spot from the previous round.
The first seven spots are separated by two pts, and the remaining 11 players are also separated by two points.
Borussia Dortmund thumped Legia Warsaw 6-0. Everyone picked this except for AlonsoKing. However, he was the only one to pick Spurs to lose, at home.
Spurs are playing their home games in the Champions League at Wembley Stadium as the capacity of their home ground at White Hart Lane has been reduced while they build a new stadium. The attendance of 85,011 set a new English record for a home game.
Meanwhile, the Leicester City fairytale continues. They won 3-0 in Belgium, in their first-ever Champions League game.

. paper_aero picked 7/8 for the weekly win (he picked the lot except for the win by Spurs away in Moscow), to climb up seven places from 12th to 5th .. and ten players all scored 6/8!
Every game was picked by 7 or more players, which meant there were no bonus points, not one.

However, two of those 8 correct picks were outrageous upsets, which only he picked! So it's not simply a bs for wwe84 in the standings, it's a bss with a double emphasis on the s.

. This tipping comp is in its 14th year (the first was back in 2003-04) and in the previous round, for just the 11th time, we had wwe84 go perfect with an 8/8. The 5th Round sees yet another perfect pick, this one by gtho4, who joins wwe84 for a share of the lead. That makes it 12 perfects in 14 seasons, with the last two back-to-back. The wooden spoon was collected by wwe84.
Next best was 7/8 by four players: paper_aero (missed the Spurs draw), PaulE (ditto), Sypher (ditto) and toocool4u (missed the win by Juventus), then a truckload of players with 6/8 and 5/8 correct. Between us we had an average strike rate of 70.8% .. which has been exceed just four times over the last 14 seasons (see Record Book below).
The seven players behind the two leaders are separated by 4 points (last week the seven players behind wwe84 were separated by just one point). As was the case in the previous round, the only bonus points or point scored were scored by the weekly winner.

The fairytale at Leicester City continues. They have now won their first three CL matches in their debut appearance. Can they emulate the efforts of Nottingham Forest in 1979? In their debut appearance, Forest went on to be crowned European Champions. They retained their title a year later to achieve this unique feat (and it's still unique 37 yrs later): they won more European Champions titles (two) than domestic titles (one).

. We had four weekly winners this round. For all of them it was their first for the season .. and each of them scored their first bonus point for the season.

There were four bonus points handed out. LeoDaVinci collected his first with an outrageous pick of an away draw by Celtic at Monchengladbach, who had beaten Celtic 2-0 away a fortnight ago.
His first bonus pugged another hole in that column and reduced the number of blanks to five: toocool4u, paper_aero, Howie72, Sypher and ozzz2002. His first bonus also means that no-one has three blanks in all three columns.

. This tipping comp is in its 14th year (the first was back in 2003-04) and, during those 13 years we had just ten occurrences of a perfect pick 8/8. Last month we had two perfects .. and this week we have yet another one!
The 13th was achieved this week by PaulE, who swept all before him with a perfect 8/8 to earn himself a perfect round bonus point. However, one of those 8 correct picks was a solo pick .. so, with a grand total of 10 points in his satchel, he went up the ladder from 7th place, 7 pts behind the leader, all the way to 2nd place; and is now just a point behind. It was his first weekly win of the season, which plugged another blank in that column.
The other bonus points for solo picks in the CSKA match went to AklonsoKing (he climbed up two places) and ElfTwinkle, who went up 5 places (same as PaulE). Four players are still looking for their first bonus point: toocool4 (3rd), paper_aero (equal 4th), Sypher (3rd last) and ozzz2002 (the tail-ender).
Position 1 to 10 are now separated by just six points (down from 8 pts in the previous round and the one before that).

Spurs, who are still undefeated in the FAPL, lost for the 3rd time and cannot progress, no matter what happens in their last group match at home to CSKA (a draw or a win will see them finish 3rd and earn the consolation prize of a place in the next round of the Europa League.
Leicester won again and will finish top of their group, no matter what happens in their last match, which means they will avoid a group winner when the draw for the KO Round (mid-Feb 2017) takes place next month on 12th December.
The next round starts in a little over 12 hours: UEFA ( 10 ) Wed 23rd Nov.
