3rd leg of FT Triple Crown

156th Melbourne Cup

This year's race is almost here. The scoring system for the Melbourne Cup comp is the same as the Grand National and Kentucky Derby compc earlier this month:

RULES
o The rules for this comp are simple, and are the same as last year and the year before.
o Pick 10 horses in the order you think they'll finish, 1st to 10th.
o Points: for any horse out of the 10 you've picked, which finishes in the first five places:
      1st : 10 pts
      2nd : 6 pts
      3rd : 3 pts
      4th : 2 pts
      5th : 1 pt
o The order of your picks will be used as a tiebreaker to separate any dead-heats or ties.
o If two players have identical picks x10, whoever posts first wins the tie-breaker.
DEADLINE
The race starts on Tuesday 1st November 2016 at 3:00pm local time. Tips close when they
jump. There is a count-down clock to the race start time in post below this one.
The following few pages (of many out there) have details of the contenders and their form:At the moment there are 52 horses still in the running to qualify, after first acceptances.
The field of 24 runners and their post positions (barrier draw) will be announced three
days before the race at around 7:30pm local time on Sat 31st Oct:

First Nominations - Tuesday (Midday) August 30
Late Nominations - Tuesday (Midday) September 6
Handicaps Declared - Tuesday (Midday) September 13
First Declarations - Tuesday (Midday) October 4
Second Declarations - Monday (10am) October 24
Final Declarations - Saturday (4.30pm) October 29
The final field is announced at 6.30pm on Saturday evening with the barrier draw conducted at approximately 7.30pm.

Picks x10 can be posted at any time in this thread, even if the field of 24 hasn't been announced! Please note that there is no need to pick reserves. If your horse is scratched, so be it (we've got half the field covered with our 10 picks). However, as is the case with any tipping comp in here, you are free to edit your picks at any time before the deadline.

22crows is the defending titleholder.

      • nobody picked the first five across the line .. and the favourite failed to win.
      • we only needed two tie-breaker countbacks: one for silver/bronze and one for 7th/8th.
      • the three medallists were the only players to pick the first three across the line .. the 5th placed runner, Who Shot The Barman, decided the gold medal.
      • the defending titleholder, 22crows, didn't get to the track this year.
      • last year's silver medallist was paper_aero, which makes it back-to-back podium finishes; in fact it's four back-to-back podiums 2013-14-15-16 with bronze-bronze-silver-bronze finishes over the last four years!
      • this was the 14th running of the Melbourne Cup comp .. szabs is the only player to defend his or her title with back-to-back wins (2008 and 2009), and N-Bomb is the (only) other player to win this comp twice (2011 and 2013).
      • that completes the third leg of the FT Triple Crown.
      • we will now have to wait until next year to see if anyone can win the FT Triple Crown. The three medallists in the Grand National (George95, illiniman14 & gtho4), did not make the podium in the Kentucky Derby (N-Bomb, Howie72 & 22crows).
      • congratulations to the three medallists .. and see ya'all next year in late March/early April when, maybe, the 15th edition of these three races will see our first-ever winner of the FT Triple Crown.

For those of us who'd like to see where their 10 picks finished, there's a complete replay of the race here:
