The FA Cup, which started in 1872, is the world's oldest football knock-out competition .. season 2017 is the 136th edition. The preliminary qualifying rounds started in mid-August. The Football Association has accepted entries from 736 teams for this season's FA Cup, comprising 644 non-league teams plus the 92 league teams. The all-time record field is 763 teams, which was set in 2012. The league teams are the 44 teams in the FAPL (20) and FLC (24), and the 48 teams in League One and League Two (24 each).- the 4th and last qualifying round for the 644 non-league teams was played last weekend Saturday 16th October.
- the 32 survivors from the qualifiers progress to the First Round where they join the 48 teams in L1 and L2 (equals 80 teams).
- the 20 survivors from the Second Round will join the FAPL and FLC teams in the Third Round (equals 64 teams).
- from there it's a straight knock-out through to the final in May.
This year's FA Cup tipping comp will run for a bit over 6˝ months over 10 rounds from Saturday 5th November 2016 until Saturday 27th May 2017 (First Round through to the FA Cup Final). Although there are 10 rounds in the tipping comp we only lodge picks on 8 occasions:- the First Round of 40 games will be split into two rounds of 16 games each by ignoring 8 games.
- the Second Round has 20 games .. 4 games are ignored.
- the Third Round of 32 games is be split into two rounds of 16 games each.
- that's 5 tipping rounds which, with the remaining 5 rounds, gives us 10 tipping rounds.
- we also have advance picks thrown in so that all 10 rounds are worth 16 pts each.

The dates for each round in this year's comp are as follows: 1st Round : Saturday 5 November 2016
2nd Round : Saturday 3 December 2016
3rd Round : Saturday 7 January 2017
4th Round : Saturday 28 January 2017
5th Round : Saturday 18 February 2017
6th Round : Saturday 11 March 2017 quarters
7th Round : Saturday 22 April 2017 semi-finals

perfect picks
other bonus pts
dead-heats | one point for each correct pick .. home win, draw, away win. In other words,
it's always at 90 minutes; penalty-shootout lotteries are ignored.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours (ineligible for bonus pts);
but if the wooden spoon score is higher, default is the ws score. Default for
the semi-finals, the final and advance picks is the wooden spoon score.
you score a bonus point if you pick a game solo .. or one of two players if we
have 10+ runners; or one of three if we have 18 or more runners.
one bonus point for 11+/16;
14/16 or higher receives a further bonus point (plus a knighthood from HM).
no one picks win, whoever picks a draw;
no one picks draw, whoever picks the upset win;
if you pick all home teams (or all bar one), ineligible for bonus pts.
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes; if they
are identical, bonus pts will be used. |
This year's comp is the 15th edition of the FA Cup tipping comp. Last season's comp was won by N-Bomb .. srini701 is the only person to have won this three times and the only person to have retained his title (when he won it in 2009 and 2010). He's had three podium finishes in this comp, all gold. Howie72, paper_aero and gtho4 have also had three podiums, but none are gold. PaulE holds the record for podium finishes with four (two were gold) .. and paper_aero will be hoping it's third time lucky: he's had back-to-back bronze medals for the last two comps. | . | Previous winners & medallists: | | . | 2003

Last year's FA Cup comp had a field of 15 runners. This year there were 18 runners at the gate when the starter fired his gun. We had zero no-shows: all 15 returned for another dose, plus three extras: LeoDaVinci, after an absence of one season, and two first-timers: toocool4u and nasty_liar.
Three games were picked by everyone ... we hit pay dirt with two but we all missed the game at Gillingham, who play in League One (the 3rd tier of English football, below the FAPL & FLC). They were held to a draw by Brackley Town, who play in National League North (formerly Conference North), the sixth tier.
Cambridge United (League Two) were held to a draw at home by Dover Athletic from the fifth tier .. srini701 & FussBudget picked this upset, and scored a bonus point each.
There were two other upsets. Both of them were draws and both of them were solo picks by George95, who's our early leader. He picked 9/16 which, with two bonus points, sees him skip away to a 2pt lead at the end of the first round.
Nobody was able to reach double digits with correct picks; the first spoon goes to ElfTwinkle; and Round 1b will be completed on Sunday.

Once again one game picked by no-one. Nonetheless, our picks in the bottom half of the First Round draw (R 1b) were better than the top half (R 1a), 145 correct v 123 correct.
Apart from the leader, nasty_liar was the only player to retain his spot .. the rest of us moved up or down a spot or two, or ten!
N-Bomb picked 11/16 and flew up the table from 12th all the way to 2nd to slot in behind behind George95, who retains his lead from Round 1a. Dizart also reached double figures; he also scored a bonus point with 10/16 .. he moved up from 7th to 3rd, to complete the first three placings.
FussBudget collected a wooden spoon, and tumbled down the ladder from 2nd all the way down to 10th. The other two spoons were awarded to srini701 and wwe84, who both fell to the rear of the field.
The draw for the Second Round took place last night (they will played Sat 3rd Dec). As there are 13 replays from Round One to come, the tipping thread will not go up until the end of next week.

Dizart picked 10/16 and takes over front-running duties from George95.
ozzz2002 collected one of the wooden spoons, and tumbled down the ladder from 4th all the way down to 11th. The other spoon was awarded to nasty_liar, who fell 5 places to 12th.
The draw for the Third Round took place on Monday 5th Dec (they will played Sat 7th Jan 2017). The tipping thread is up, even though there are still two more replays to be decided.
Please note that The FA have scheduled one game for Friday night 6th Jan 2017.

Four games were unanimous picks, and we hit pay dirt with three of them .. we all missed Ipswich being held to a draw at home by non-league team Lincoln (they're leading the Football Conference, now known as the National League).
Three players scored the weekly win, the first for the season for each of them. George95 collected the wooden spoon, also a first for the season.

N-Bomb, the 2016 TC champion, starts off he new year with a bang. He displaces Dizart as leader and is now 4 pts in front of the pack, which is the biggest lead so far in this tipping comp. The next 4 pts cover 11 players!
Not to be outdone Howie72, the other Kiwi amongst us, scores back-to-back weekly wins and flies 11 places up the table from 14th to 3rd .. two rounds back he was equal last, 11 pts behind the leader!
The 2nd half of the Third Round was almost a perfect game of musical chairs .. only two players retained their position. Nine players set new personal highs or lows (that's half the field):
New highs: N-Bomb, Sypher, ozzz2002 and Howie72.
New lows : illiniman14, gtho4, FussBudget, paper_aero and nasty_liar.
We had three unanimous picks and we hit pay dirt with two of them .. we all missed the upset at Anfield. Liverpool fielded a team of youngsters and were held to a 0-0 draw by Plymouth Argyle, who play in League Two, the 4th tier of English football. It was the youngest-ever side fielded by Liverpool.
dg_dave was the only player to pick Stoke City, who play in the FAPL, to lose at home to FLC side Wolves. The other outrageous pick was West Brom, also from the FAPL, to lose at home to FLC side, Derby County .. somwehow ozzz2002 and Howie72 picked this upset.

In a round of upsets, three players scored 10/16 for the weekly win and there was just the one wooden spoon. Between us we had seven unanimous picks, and we failed with four of them! Liverpool (FAPL) lost at home to Wolves from downstairs (FLC). Non-league teams Lincoln City and Sutton Utd beat Brighton & Hove Albion and Leeds Utd respectively (both FLC), and Oxford United (L1) beat Newcastle United (FLC).
For the first time since 1921, when the Football League expanded to four Divisions, the 5th Round of the FA Cup will see *two* non-league teams in the last 16. Some in the media are reporting this feat as the first since the formation of the Football League in 1888 e.g. espn and bbc, which is incorrect.
There were only two divisions in the Football League prior to WW1 and two non-league teams reached the last 16 on more than one occasion e.g. 1901 and 1902 .. 1901 saw three non-league teams in the last 16: Reading, Kettering and Spurs .. 1902 saw five non-league teams in the last 16 : Bristol Rovers, Lincoln City, Reading, Portsmouth and Southampton. Spurs won the FA Cup in a replay (they joined the Football League in 1908) and Southampton lost the Final (they joined the Football League in 1920).
Lincoln and Sutton are the 8th and 9th non-league teams to make it though to the last 16 since 1921:

The 5th Round produced another round of FA Cup upsets. We had two unanimous picks hit pay dirt and two strike out.
For the first time since 1921, when the Football League expanded from two to four divisions, we had two non-league teams in the 5th Round: Lincoln City and Sutton United. They were the 8th and 9th non-league teams to make it though to the last 16 since 1921 (see list above in the Results post for the 4th Round).
Sutton United were beaten by Arsenal, but Burnley (an FAPL team) lost at home to Lincoln City, who became the first non-league team to make it to the quarter-finals since 1921.
The last time a non-league team appeared in an FA Cup quarter-final was 103 years ago when Queens Park Rangers lost 2-1 at Anfield in 1914. At that time QPR were a member of the Southern League.
QPR joined the FL in 1920 when the SL disintegrated. All 22 teams in the SL joined the FL en masse .. 21 in a new Division Three and one replaced Lincoln City, who left the FL as they failed to gain re-election (they were 2nd last in Div Two in 1919-20). Grimsby Town finished last but escaped the chop and joined the newly formed Div 3 along with 21 ex-SL teams. This annual (re)election for the worst placed clubs in the FL ceased some 30 years ago in 1986, when promotion into and relegation out of the FL commenced.

Tottenham Hotspur v Millwall
Twelve of us have both Chelsea and Manchester United as two of our four semi-finalists; we have just lost a live pick as they will play each other in the quarters. No one has chosen both of them as their two finalists (see post above this one).
