We are two weeks from the start of the new season. This is the fifth iteration of our NCAA Basketball comp, and here are the rules: 1. One point per correct pick 2. Deadline will be the tipoff of the first game of each week. Many games (especially later on in the season) have no set tipoff time as of November, so getting tips in before 11 AM of the day in question is usually safe but cannot be guarantees. 3. "Week 4" is once again the Big Ten-ACC Challenge, and will start on Monday, November 28. 4. Late tips will be ineligible for any games that have already started and incur a 1-point penalty. 5. Default score is the wooden spoon 6. Late starters will enter at the lowest score at that time, and after 4 weeks of not tipping you will be considered inactive. 7. End-of-season tiebreakers are HOF v. WS differential; then HOFs; then bonus points. - This comp is separate from the March Madness comp Bonus Points 1. One point for solo picks or one of two 2. One point for picking 13+/15 3. Ineligible for bonus points if tipper picks all home teams or all but one -The team listed second is considered the 'home' team, even for neutral-site games. Howie72 ended with gold last year after surpassing eventual silver medalist N-Bomb with 2 weeks to go; George95 led most of the season but ended with a bronze. Those 3 finished in the exact same position the year before as well! Can anyone knock off the College Basketball Triumvirate?

ElfTwinkle had an amazing opening week and starts out with a 3-point lead on the rest of the field. The next 4 points separate the next 8 in the field. ozzz2002 picked up the wooden spoon as the only tipper to hit fewer than half of the games on the schedule.
We kicked off the year with quite the matchups, as #11 Indiana showed they were one of the top teams in the country by toppling #3 Kansas 103-99 in overtime. Also in the Armed Forces Classic, which thankfully didn’t have a cancelled game this year, #10 Arizona proved their ranking with a win over #12 Michigan State 65-63. Most of the top 25 had a fine weekend, except for #18 Connecticut going down to Wagner 67-58 at home. #7 Xavier, #21 Texas, and #22 Creighton all struggled, but finished with wins.
The first bonus point of the season was doled out to wwe84 with Indiana’s win. La Salle’s overtime loss kept ozzz2002 and yoyoandcigs from a bonus point. George95 and Sypher suffered a similar fate as Louisiana Tech fell on opening day. Sypher also missed a point taking Nevada, which would have been a big upset over #17 Saint Mary’s. Howie72 and ElfTwinkle both earned bonuses for Marquette’s 95-71 blowout win over Vanderbilt. N-Bomb and George95 received one for Albany’s victory over Penn State. Everyone picked 3 games on the schedule, including Pittsburgh’s 2-overtime victory over Eastern Michigan, which we probably thought would be a cakewalk. But you just never know with the sport that gives you March Madness.

ElfTwinkle had another great week, earning a second straight near perfect bonus and extending the lead out to 5 points after only 2 weeks. illiniman14 moves up into 2nd place with a weekly win, only missing out on a perfect week by 1 pick. While 5 points separate first from second, 5 points also separates second from ninth, which is now 3rd to last as dg_dave joins the field and takes home some cutlery to boot alongside wwe84 as he tried his hand at several solo bonuses that failed to pan out.
Friday nearly saw another top-25 upset, but #15 Purdue overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Georgia State 64-56. #11 Xavier also had another close call, but at least this time it was against the ACC’s Clemson. Saturday had soon-to-be-not #1 Duke rebounding from its loss to #7 Kansas by beating Penn State by only 10. #17 Saint Mary’s won a big battle of mid-majors over Dayton 61-57. And finally, #21 Rhode Island, who may become the jewel of the mid-majors this year, defeated #24 Cincinnati 76-71. Sunday gave us Duke defeating Rhode Island 75-65, as defending champion #3 Villanova struggled a bit in a 67-57 victory over UCF. Xavier again had a close call against last year’s tournament’s darling Northern Iowa. #13 Michigan State got a 78-77 victory over Florida Gulf Coast on a very controversial game-ending call.
The only game that handed out solo bonuses this week was USC’s 65-63 victory over Texas A&M, which made wwe84 and ozzz2002 quite pleased. The closest anyone else came to a solo bonus was dg_dave, whose UT-Arlington came up 4 points short after leading Arkansas by 11 at halftime. The duo of wwe84 and ozzz2002 also missed bonuses as North Florida fell 78-70 against LSU.

ElfTwinkle’s lead slightly diminishes back to its original 3 points in week 1, now with a 3rd different tipper behind in second place. N-Bomb now takes the silver reins after tying with Howie72 for the weekly win and a near perfect bonus point. Sypher and dg_dave are now both bringing up the rear as they share wooden spoons.
Everybody earned points from 3 games: #21 Rhode Island bounced back from their first loss to take care of Belmont; #7 Virginia crushed Iowa 74-41; and #9 Xavier beat tournament darling Northern Iowa for the second time in a row (due to preseason tournaments) 64-42. Everybody missed South Carolina’s easy 64-50 victory over #18 Syracuse.
#8 Arizona was the top ranked team to go down on Friday, falling to undefeated Butler 69-65. #10 Louisville blew a 22-point lead and lost to #20 Baylor 66-63. #19 West Virginia also lost the NIT Season Tip-Off Championship Game to Temple 81-77. On Sunday, #21 Iowa State also lost, but it was to #11 Gonzaga 73-71. The big news of the week was #3 Indiana’s loss at Fort Wayne 71-68 earlier in the week.

Howie72 picks up a second straight weekly win, and moves to within 2 points of ElfTwinkle’s lead, which is now at a season-low of 2. The top 3 are now 5 points clear of fourth place, which itself is only 4 points separated from the next 5 tippers. gtho4 picked up a wooden spoon this week, and dg_dave matched him in points as he missed this round.
Everybody saw Florida State’s victory over Minnesota coming, as well as Notre Dame smoking Iowa 92-78. Four solo bonuses were handed out this week, two to Sypher and two to tippers who joined him. Sypher and ozzz2002 got one for a previously-embarrassing Illinois beating NC State 88-74, and wwe84 joined Sypher for one as Virginia Tech took down Michigan 73-70 on the road.
The ACC handled the Big Ten in the year’s challenge 9-5, the first time the ACC has won the title outright since 2008. The biggest matchups saw #5 Duke take down a struggling Michigan State, who is now 4-4 on the season; #17 Wisconsin continued their winning ways over #22 Syracuse 77-60; #14 Louisville came back from their previous loss to beat #15 Purdue 71-64; and #13 Indiana showed their might at home defeating #3 North Carolina 76-67. Elsewhere, #21 Rhode Island felt the sting of defeat to other mid-major darling Valparaiso 65-62.

Howie72 notches his third straight weekly win, and with that goes to the top of the standings, overtaking an impressive early lead by ElfTwinkle, who now sits in second. N-Bomb picks up the spoon but still occupies the third spot tied with ozzz2002, who actually came out with the most points this week with 2 solo bonuses. The top two are separated from third by 5 points, and the two in third have a 3-point cushion on fifth.
As mentioned above, ozzz2002 came out like a bandit this week with solo bonus points. In the game of the week, ozzz2002 and wwe84 both took underdog #11 UCLA traveling to Lexington to take on #1 Kentucky, and they actually left victors after a thrilling 97-92 game. However, ozzz2002 also took #25 West Virginia on the road at #6 Virginia, and “Press Virginia” worked its magic once again, going back home as “Best Virginia” 66-57. N-Bomb and illiniman14 nearly came out with a bonus point, but Oklahoma State let a 10-point lead with 10 minutes left slip away, and were unable to hit a game-winner after giving up the lead on free throws with 9 seconds left to lose 71-70.
One of the most impressive teams so far (if not the most impressive) has been #9 Baylor, who remains undefeated by taking down #7 Xavier 76-61, and this after they already beat (rankings at the time) #4 Oregon, #24 Michigan State, and #10 Louisville. In what was probably only the third best game of the day, #8 Gonzaga proved themselves by beating #16 Arizona 69-62. #21 Rhode Island shows they still have a little work to do to be a mid-major darling this year, dropping to Providence 63-60.

ElfTwinkle and Howie72 are now both tied for the lead, and hold a 10-point advantage over 3rd place George95 (who gets a win this week with gtho4) and yoyoandcigs. They have a 1-point lead over ozzz2002 for the last place in the podium. N-Bomb takes a hit with the wooden spoon and for the moment is out of the immediate running for third, but we still have over half the season left to go.
Four bonus points were handed out this week, as wwe84 was the only one of us to take #20 Florida State over #12 Virginia. wwe84 and ozzz2002 both earned one for Virginia Tech’s upset bid over a shorthanded #5 Duke as star Grayson Allen remains suspended for tripping. ozzz2002 also earned one alone as Richmond went on the road and beat Dayton. However, ozzz2002 also was the only one to miss out on #13 Butler’s victory over Providence and Miami (FL)’s win over NC State. wwe84 and Sypher both missed out on a bonus point when Seton Hall eeked out a win over Marquette 69-66.
Defending champion #1 Villanova survived their third test of the year, taking down #10 Creighton on the road 80-70. Georgia Tech took down #9 North Carolina 75-63 on the same day their rival #5 Duke fell. The other upset of the weekend involved #15 Purdue falling to Minnesota at home 91-82 in overtime. With Creighton’s loss, only 3 undefeated teams remain: #1 Villanova, #4 Baylor (due to move up thanks to #2 UCLA’s first loss), and #7 Gonzaga, who has two good wins on the year so far and won’t be tested again for two weeks when they take on #19 Saint Mary’s.

ElfTwinkle continues to impress, as a perfect week puts her 5 points over Howie72 and in a demanding first place lead. Howie72 falls back while much of the top of the leaderboard hit a perfect or near perfect bonus, so George95 cuts the previous 10-point gap from 3rd to the top 2 down to 6, with yoyoandcigs only 1 point behind. ElfTwinkle obviously picks up the win this week for the perfect performance (and enters the Hall of Fame for her score) while ozzz2002 went out on several limbs and was out for 4 solo bonus picks, but missed them all and ends up with a spoon.
This week was nearly all chalk – only two matchups ended up with less than half of all tippers getting it right. Syracuse beat Pittsburgh and Maryland took down Michigan, giving 5 tippers each a point for those matchups. Otherwise, ozzz2002 and dg_dave missed out on 4 solo picks each; Sypher missed out on two; and Howie72 and N-Bomb both missed one opportunity.
The top 25 was surprisingly stable on Saturday, as there were no upsets. #18 Butler did go to overtime with a bad Georgetown team, but turned it on for the extra period and won 85-76. On Sunday, #20 Purdue held serve at home and beat #13 Wisconsin, further muddying the waters of a murky Big Ten. Finally, California went on the road and took down #25 USC 74-73 with a block at the buzzer.

Another week, and another interesting twist to the top of the leaderboard. After taking a 5-point lead last week, ElfTwinkle picks up a spoon this week and drops back to a tie for first with Howie72 once again. Howie72 and George95 share a win this week, and with that George95 earns a 3-point lead for 3rd place, but he’s still 7 points back of first. ElfTwinkle also shared a spoon with dg_dave, meaning the far ends of the standings had a bad week.
Whereas last week gave out 5 perfect bonus points, this week handed out 6 solo bonus points. N-Bomb and ozzz2002 both earned 2 on the same two games - almost everybody took Pittsburgh at home against Miami (FL), but they ended up getting blown out at home 72-46; and Davidson ended up hanging on at home against VCU 69-63. Howie72 and dg_dave earned the other bonus points as Providence beat Seton Hall at home 65-61.
The top ranked team to lose on Saturday was #7 Duke, who could not hang with #14 Louisville and fell 78-69. #9 Florida State also found some road woes as they dropped one to #11 North Carolina 96-83. #15 Xavier fell on the road in conference to #12 Butler 83-78. #24 Minnesota dropped a disappointing game at Penn State 52-50. #21 Saint Mary’s also fell to long-time rival #5 Gonzaga 79-56.

ElfTwinkle’s wild ride continues on for another week, as she is back up by 3 points in first place. Howie72 falls back into sole second place again, while George95 slowly gains ground on silver with yoyoandcigs close behind. However, the award this week goes to dg_dave, who picks up his first win and gains 7 points on 10th as he attempts to climb out of the cellar before the end of the season. Three spoons were handed out to illiniman14, ozzz2002, and wwe84.
Five solo bonus points were awarded this week. dg_dave helped his weekly win performance with two of them, including seeing #14 Arizona topple #3 UCLA on the road 96-85 (shared with ElfTwinkle) and Marquette drop a shorthanded #7 Creighton 102-94 on the road (shared with ozzz2002). Additionally, ozzz2002 had a truly solo pick as Vanderbilt upset #19 Florida 68-66. ozzz2002 was also up for another 4 solo bonus points if they had connected, but the closest any of them came to fruition was a 10-point loss by Providence to #1 Villanova.
#7 was a bad spot to be in the polls this week. Creighton and West Virginia tied in their amount of votes at that spot this week and both fell; West Virginia did on the road to Kansas State (and Creighton’s is above). #12 Louisville overcame an early 14-0 deficit without their starting point guard due to injury against #10 Florida State, but couldn’t pull out a victory and fell 73-68. #13 Butler would’ve suffered the biggest upset this week as they were challenged by lowly DePaul, but came out the victor 70-69 in overtime. #24 South Carolina also lost, but it was hardly an upset as they went to Lexington and got blown out by #5 Kentucky 85-69.

ElfTwinkle maintains her lead out front; N-Bomb grabs a weekly win along with a solo bonus; George95 and Sypher both pick up spoons. The top 2 are 8 points clear of 3rd place while 4 tippers are within 3 points of bronze.
N-Bomb and wwe84 earned solo bonuses for Syracuse’s win over Florida State; ozzz2002 and dg_dave both earned bonuses for Miami (FL)’s victory over North Carolina and Providence’s victory over Marquette. Everybody got Houston’s win over Temple and Utah’s win over a struggling Oregon State.
In the game of the week, #2 Kansas went to Rupp Arena and beat #4 Kentucky 79-73. Syracuse beat #6 Florida State (mentioned above); #9 North Carolina lost to Miami (FL) (mentioned above as well); #10 Oregon fell to Colorado; #11 Butler fell to Georgetown at home; #14 Notre Dame lost to Georgia Tech; #15 Wisconsin went to overtime but won against lowly Rutgers; and on Sunday #20 Purdue lost to Nebraska.

ElfTwinkle’s lead begins to grow yet again, now back up to 5. This was thanks to Howie72 picking up a spoon this week, shared with illiniman14. ozzz2002 not only got a weekly win, but also two solo bonus points and vaults from 8th to 5th, just 1 point behind bronze.
Six solo bonuses were given out for the second straight week, all thanks to the Big 12. Sypher and wwe84 both hit on Iowa State’s overtime road victory over Kansas; Sypher shared with ozzz2002 in Kansas State’s upset win on the road at Baylor; and ozzz2002 and dg_dave shared a point as Oklahoma State won on the road at West Virginia.
#2 Baylor, #3 Kansas, and #7 West Virginia fell this weekend, as discussed above; #5 Arizona got blown out by #13 Oregon; #8 Kentucky fell on the road to #24 Florida; #9 Virginia fell on the road to Syracuse; #17 Maryland lost at home to #23 Purdue, and #22 Creighton lost at home to Xavier.

A 5-point lead has been the bane of ElfTwinkle’s existence – the first time she had it she lost 2 points on the lead; the second time she lost all 5 points; and from last week to this week Howie72 gained 6 points and now has the lead alone. Howie72 had a perfect week along with a solo bonus to net 17 points and make the battle for first much more interesting. N-Bomb and yoyoandcigs also earned near perfect bonuses, as N-Bomb moves into 3rd place. ozzz2002 picks up a spoon this week in his quest for 6 solo bonuses, none of which panned out.
Everybody hit on Florida’s home victory over Texas A&M. ElfTwinkle and Howie72 both earned a solo bonus with Providence’s win at home over Butler. ozzz2002’s six solo attempts were foiled by Arizona over California, Maryland over Ohio State, Iowa State over Oklahoma (all with dg_dave), Gonzaga over St. Mary’s (with ElfTwinkle), and South Carolina over Mississippi State and VCU over Davidson (alone). ElfTwinkle missed alone on Michigan State’s victory and Louisville’s win. wwe84 and dg_dave also lost out on Kentucky’s win over Alabama.
#3 Kansas barely came away with a victory at Texas Tech 80-79; Providence provided the only top-25 upset on Saturday by beating #22 Butler. That changed on Sunday, as Northwestern took down #7 Wisconsin on the road; #11 Cincinnati lost to #25 SMU on the road; and #12 Virginia lost to Virginia Tech in double overtime.
