Australian Open 2017

Novak Djokovic has won 5 of the last 6 Australian Opens but comes in as No. 2 this year. Andy Murray has lost 4 Australian Open finals to the Djoker, but he is the new No. 1... Will these two slug it out yet again, or is there a twist to the tale waiting to happen? Angelique Kerber and Serena Williams are the top 2 women and the last 2 winners of the women's titles. Will they play the finals this year?

The first Grand Slam of the years starts on Monday, January 16. srini701 (women's) and ElfTwinkle (men's) will try to hold on to their title here even as the players slug it out on the hot courts of Melbourne. Sign Up here if you want a shot at our title here and come back before Wednesday, January 18 (11 am Melbourne time) to get going.

Tipping threads will be posted once the draws are made on Friday, January 13.

  • Serena Williams has finally got one more monkey off her back....23rd Grand Slam title, the most by any woman in the Open era, and one behind Margaret Court now, and she did it without dropping a set the whole two weeks! She had a horrible draw, facing two former top-10 players in the opening two rounds, and was also without too much match practice. But what a tourney it turned out to be! It was a fairy tale run for 36-year old Venus Williams and 34-year old Mirjana Lucic-Baroni too. At 25, Coco Vandeweghe was the youngest of the 4 semi-finalists, and nobody expected her to be in there as well.
  • The number of upsets in every round had its say on our scores here. A record (for me) number of 14 people lodged tips (welcome back, LeoDaVinci, and welcome to toocool4u and Fifiona81 smile ) We had a pitiful strike rate of 33% (only 71 picks out of 210), and a winning score of 21% of the actual perfect pick shocked
  • None of us picked 3 of the quarter-finalists (2 of who went to the semis as well)...Mirjana Lucic, Coco Vandeweghe and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova...but most incredibly, we did have Venus Williams being picked to make it all the way to the finals (take a bow, Leo smilee )
  • George95 takes home the gold backing the Williams sisters (he had Venus making it to the semis). LeoDaVinci marks a return to tennis comps with a silver, riding the Williams band wagon too (he didnt have any other scorer shocked ) George picked Serena to win the title and had Karolina Pliskova in the quarters and that was the difference between the 2. toocool4u edged out wwe84 for the bronze medal on a better tie-break score to make it a clean sweep of medals for the Canadians in our comp.
  • Another Canadian ElfTwinkle didn't have it too good though, and she finished bottom with just 2 right picks. But beating her to the cellar spot on a worser tie-break score was Dizart...
  • Hearty Congratulations then to the first medallists for 2017 in FT: George95, LeoDaVinci and toocool4u.

  • The last time a Grand Slam final in the men's section did *NOT* feature either Novak Djokovic or Andy Murray was the French Open in 2014. So after 10 Slams in a row, we can all be forgiven to think that one (or both) of them would make it to the summit clash....Roger Federer wouldn't mind it wink
  • The last time the Williams sisters AND Federer-Nadal featured in a Slam final together was at Wimbledon in 2008.....Venus and Nadal won....so once 35-year-old Serena won on Saturday, it was always up to 35-year-old Federer to live up to the expectations too on Sunday, and he did....In a thrilling 5-setter (BOTH semis were also 5-setters), Federer held off Nadal to win his 18th Grand Slam title (Nadal is on 14, Djokovic is on 12) and his first after Wimbledon in 2012....I will not go into the other bunch of records he broke along the way on his incredible journey!
  • For the first time since the French Open in 2004, the top two seeds have been knocked out before the quarterfinals. And this is the first Australian Open since 2003 where six of the top eight seeds were knocked out before the quarterfinals.
  • All this had a major, major hit on our scores here...we ended up with a 30% strike rate (63/210 picks)...the worst at least since I took up the tennis comps in 2014 sick We did pick 7 of the 8 quarterfinalists amongst us (there were 2 picks for "Zverev" too, but since Murray was also among these 2 guys' picks, I couldn't credit them for Mischa Zverev....they obviously meant the other, Alexander Zverev)...tragedy is, not one of us picked Federer to make it to the semis.....see point #1 above crazy
  • Incredibly, we needed a tie-break for the top 2 spots AND for the bronze as well....gtho4 had a better tie-break (19 against 22 while actual was 20 games) and so landed the gold despite having one pick less than toocool4u. 4 people tied on 55 points, one point behind the top score, but wwe84 was not to be denied a second time after narrowly missing out in the women's competition.
  • George95 went from gold in the women's comp to a spoon in the men's...again courtesy a worser tie-break over N-Bomb!
  • Hearty Congratulations then to gtho4, toocool4u (medals in both sections smile ) and wwe84 ...the rest of us can all look forward to a better showing at the Roland Garros in May wink

Any Comments, feedback would be most welcome....
