Team Tennis 2017 -- February to November 2017This will be the FOURTH running of the Team tennis competition (Fed Cup and Davis Cup). 14 people took part last year (14 in 2015 too). srini701 starts as a 2-time defending champion after edging Dizart out for the title last year. N-Bomb had won the inaugural edition of this comp. We will only tip the countries we think will win each tie from the list I will provide before each round. The comp will only have 7 rounds, but will run almost the entire year! The schedule for 2017 is: 1. Davis Cup First round: 3-5 February 2017 2. Fed Cup First round: 11-12 February 2016 (advance pick winner) 3. Davis Cup WG quarterfinals, Group 1 2nd round: 7 - 9 April 2017 (advance pick winner) 4. Fed Cup semis & Group 1 and 2 playoffs: 22-23 April 2017 5. Davis Cup WG Semis + Playoffs: 15 - 17 Sep 2017 6. Fed Cup final: 11-12 November 2017 7. Davis Cup finals: 24-26 November 2017 Please let me know your interest by signing up here.

| A warm welcome to everybody who returned for another edition of the Team tennis comp...13 of us lined up from last year and we added one new member, Fifiona81. Sypher is the missing name from last year.
The wonderful theatre of drama that is the Davis Cup unfolded in all its glory across the world over the weekend....Defending Champions Argentina went down 0-2 to Italy at home and nearly pulled off a miracle from there, getting back to 2-2 and 2 sets up in the 5th rubber too before Fognini managed to silence the vocal home supporters. Argentina became the 10th defending champions to fall in the first round of the next year's comp since 1972 when the challenger round was abolished.
There was lot more drama up north of Argentina, in Canada, where the 17-year old home boy Denis Shapovalov was disqualified by the match referee after a ball he hit in anger on losing a game went and hit the match umpire in the eye! It was a sad end to an intriguing tie that was even at 2-2 against Great Britain after the heroics of Vasek Pospisil in both his singles ties...Germany were expected to beat Belgium at home easily, but Steve Darcis of Belgium had other ideas. It turned out to be the biggest upset of round 1! Last year's runners-up Croatia also lost at home, to Spain, but there were easy wins for Australia, USA, France and Serbia.
Five of us picked 12 of the 15 matches for a share of the lead at the top. wwe84 was bold enough to side with Belgium, and he takes the year's first bonus points for that! We had a good round as a whole, picking 141 out of 210 ties (success rate of 67.1%). We were split down the middle in 3 ties in our picks; otherwise it was mostly predictable picks. dg_dave would wish he picked 67% of the matches too, after landing the first spoon of the year and falling behind early in a short race (short in rounds, long in duration )
The next round of comp will be the Fed Cup World group ties over the weekend of February 11-12. Please make sure you lodge your picks and your advance tip for the winner before this weekend.

| Defending champions Czech Republic duly booked their place in the semifinals of the Fed Cup for the 9th year in a row (no surprises there, all 14 of us picked them!) but there were still a few unexpected results over the weekend in the Fed Cup! Belarus shocked Netherlands to enter the semifinals for the very first time, a result only gtho4 managed to get right here. Second seed France also lost, but they were on road to an equally strong Switzerland. This is the first semifinal for Switzerland in 18 years! USA also entered the semifinals for the first time since 2010, and they will host the defending champions in April. In Group II, there were easy wins for Russia and Ukraine, but Italy and Romania were both surprised at home.
The 4 Group II winners (Russia, Ukraine, Belgium, Slovakia) will now play the 4 losers from the World Group (France, Spain, Netherlands, Germany) for a place in next year's World Group. The 4 Group II losers (Chinese Taipei, Australia, Romania, Italy) will play the various zonal group I winners (Great Britain, Serbia, Canada, Kazakhstan) for a place in next year's World Group II.
dg_dave went from spoon to winner, almost picking the card, missing only the Netherlands' upset. He's back in the reckoning, but will hopefully not have to regret his round 1 picks in later in November gtho4 and LeoDaVinci take home the round's spoons. gtho4 went a very interesting sequence of "right, wrong, right, wrong" in his 8 picks this round
A host of us are still bunched up together but Dizart manages to take the lead at the top.
The next round of comp will be the Davis Cup World group Quarter-finals the weekend of April 7-9.

| Home teams ruled the roost over the weekend as Davis Cup action returned around the world. All 4 World Group Quarterfinals were won by the home teams. Belgium beat Italy, Australia got a measure of revenge back against their perennial rivals USA, France easily overturned an Murray-less Britain and Djokovic led Serbia into the semifinals against a Nadal-less Spain. Belgium hosts Australia while Serbia travel to France in the semifinals in September.
The eight nations that will compete the World Group play-offs against the first round losers were also decided after a fiercely contested weekend of Group I action. Kazakhstan, India, Hungary, Netherlands, Belarus, Portugal, Brazil and Colombia will take part in the World Group play-offs on 15-17 September. This is just the second time Portugal will be playing the play0ffs (after 1994). They have never been in the World Group. After missing out last year, Netherlands will contest the play-offs this year after sealing a 3-1 triumph on away soil in Bosnia, while Belarus emulated the success of its Fed Cup team by springing a surprise 3-1 win over Austria. Belarus is in the World Group play-offs for the first time in over a decade.
India enters the playoffs for the 4th year in a row, and after playing Serbia, Spain and Czech Republic the last 3 years, will be hoping for a kinder draw this year. Brazil is in the playoffs for a remarkable 12th year in a row, while Colombia has made it for the 4th time in the last 5 years.
ElfTwinkle raced up our ladder here with a remarkable 14/16 picks (including the default point for Pakistan)...Had she picked India or Belarus she could have snagged a bonus point as well and been in sole lead in our comp. That honour goes to Howie72 who is closely followed by illiniman14. dg_dave and ozzz2002 take home the spoons with a very respectable 9/16 picks.
The next round of comp is the Fed Cup World Group semis and the group 1 and 2 playoffs over the weekend of 22-23 April. Please make sure you lodge your tips before the ties start.

| Perennial favourites Czech Republic were without their top 3 players and they finally fall before the finals....USA, with CoCo Vandeweghe playing brilliantly and winning all her matches, thus make it to the finals for the first time in seven years. The tie still went the distance, with only the deciding doubles clinching it for the Americans.
Playing the USA in finals will not be Switzerland as all 13 of us here anticipated, but Belarus! Even without their one marquee player Azarenka, Belarus has won 2 ties this year to shock and surprise the tennis world. Switzerland probably thought the tie would be easy too, for they didn't play Belinda Bencic in singles and ended up losing 3 of the 4 singles ties.
In the playoff matches, France swamped Spain, Belgium surprised the Russians, while Germany and Netherlands kept their World Group status intact. Romania easily beat Great Britain to send the Britons back to the Europe zone, while Australia managed to stay in Group II beating the Serbians.
Howie72 and illiniman14 continue their race here, winning the round's honours (along with N-Bomb) picking 6 of the 8 ties. paper_aero got the round's sole bonus point correctly picking the Belgian surprise. wwe84 takes his first spoon for the season.
A long break now for 4 months....The next round of the comp will be the semifinals and the world group playoffs of the Davis Cup during 15-17 September. Hope to see you all around at Roland Garros and at Wimbledon before September then

| Belgium entered their second Davis Cup finals in 3 years, coming from 1-2 behind on the final day to inflict a heart-breaking defeat to Australia. They will play France, who had it easy against a Djokovic-less Serbia.
In the World Group playoff ties, Argentina lost to Kazakhstan, and drop into Americas Zone Group I. They become just the third nation – after France in 1997 and Sweden in 1999 – to fall out of the World Group a year after winning the title! Czech Republic return to the Europe Zone for the first time in 12 years, losing to Netherlands. Switzerland and Germany won despite not having their best players, to keep their places in the World Group. Hungary surprised Russia, while Canada, Croatia and Japan all kept their places in the World group for 2018.
2 people (illiniman and dg_dave) defaulted this round; Winners of 2 ties (South Korea and Croatia) were picked by everyone; Winners of 2 ties (Kazakhstan and Hungary) were picked by none of us; 2 ties (France and Austria)were missed by 1 each (paper_aero and wwe84 respectively); Another 2 ties were missed by 2 people each....nice piece of stat
Howie72 keeps his lead very closely followed by N-Bomb.....illiniman14 probably forgot he was tipping this comp, and so drops off the podium position. paper_aero takes the spoon.
The next round is in early November (Fed Cup finals); followed by the Davis Cup finals a couple of weeks later....

USA finally managed to end their title drought, winning their first Fed Cup since 2000. Coco Vandeweghe was the star, winning both her singles and featuring in the deciding doubles tie as well, even as Belarus fought admirably without Victoria Azarenka to make a fist of the tie.
Ozzz2002 and George95 had both picked the USA to win the title back in February (along with wwe84), and they are paid handsomely with 3 extra points for the round, getting them the round's honours. ElfTwinkle takes the spoon for the round.
Howie72 is still ahead by a point, but neither he nor George95 have any advance points to win in the final round. Both N-Bomb and srini701 still have a live pick for the last round. Interesting battle for the podium ahead
The final round is the Davis Cup finals in a couple of weeks ....

France won the Davis Cup for the 10th time despite the best efforts of David Goffin....Goffin won both his singles, but Steve Darcis was not able to complement him, and France won the crucial doubles tie as well and are now the top ranked nation in the world.
Our leader Howie72 had no live pick for advance points and N-Bomb took full advantage of that. A perfect final round sees him vault to the top. 2-time champion srini701 could not make it a hat-trick, but a perfect final round for him also and the added bonus point sees him pip Howie72 to the silver medal. Fifiona81 was the 3rd person to finish with a perfect final round. This season was all for illiniman14 to lose after he blitzed the opening rounds. He duly defaulted a couple of Davis Cup rounds and slipped off the radar. George95 and Dizart were in the running too for most part before slipping off.
dg_dave ensured he wouldn't finish in the cellar after LeoDaVinci faltered in the final round. wwe84 also signed off the year with a spoon
Congratulations then to N-Bomb for adding one more title to his kitty for 2017, and hope to see everyone of you back in 2018
