Super RugbyThis year's Super Rugby tipping comp starts on Thursday 23 February and will conclude after 17 rounds in mid-July. The rules are simple. They're the same as in previous years: points
default
draws
upsets
perfect picks
draw bonus
dead-heats
deadline | one point for each correct pick.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours; but if the wooden
spoon score is more, it's the spoon score.
for those brave souls amongst us, you can pick a draw (good luck).
if you pick a game solo, you score a bonus point (or one of two tipsters).
of 9/9 scores a bonus point; ditto for 8/8 or 7/7 when there are byes.
no-one picks a draw, bonus point for the minority who picked the upset
win (same as FLC comp).
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes; if
they're identical, bonus pts will be used.
is always Thursday midnight FT time, with a period of grace through to
kick-off in the first game which is, sometimes, just 35 minutes later. If
you lodge your picks late you score zero for any game that's started. |
This is the 17th edition of the Super Rugby tipping comp.. Last season's competition was won by Dizart, with paper_aero and N-Bomb following him. Ozzz2002 (2015), PaulE (2014), Sypher (2013), Howie72 (2012) and N-Bomb (2011) were the 5 previous winners of this competition in recent times. As you can see, NOBODY has been able to retain their title  Can Dizart break that hoodoo? Or will it be a new winner yet again? All trivia tipping comp junkies, and anyone else who follows the game they play in heaven, please sign in! paper_aero has been silver medallist last 3 years in a row....forgot to mention that!

A Warm welcome to all 14 who lined up for the 2017 edition of the Super 18s Rugby season. No newcomers and no drop outs (Davjack lines up at the start for a change  )
Defending champions Wellington Hurricanes had an easy opener, and it already looks like a long season ahead for the Tokyo Sunwolves. There were also wins in the opening round for the other traditional "stronger" teams like Waikato Chiefs, Stormers, Crusaders, Lions and the Waratahs. A little of a surprise that only 3 of us picked the Chiefs to win, but then, they were playing the Highlanders, who had finished higher than them last season, away. The Argentine team, Jaguares also opened their campaign with an away win, as did the Auckland Blues.
We had a good opening round, getting 80% of our picks. 6 people, including the 3 podium finishers from a year back, are among the leaders. Sypher and Davjack lodged their picks a little late but I couldn't give them a "gimme" point for the opening match as wwe84 and gtho4 decided to be brave. wwe84 starts the season with a spoon.

The second week produced some more predictable results and a couple of "shocks" as well. Wellington Hurricanes followed up their 88 point drubbing from last week with another massive 71-06 rout of the poor Melbourne Rebels. It was their biggest home winning margin and they next take on the unbeaten Chiefs in a blockbuster clash next week.
The Waikato Chiefs beat back the Auckland Blues for a bonus point win. The Canterbury Crusaders pulled off a last minute win over the Otago Highlanders and the New Zealand Conference is going to be a churning pot of results. Any team can beat any other team on their day, though the Highlanders would love to get a win soon after falling 2 behind in this group.
The Gauteng Lions won't be complaining of not playing the New Zealand teams. They thrashed the NSW Waratahs and look good for another deep run this year. The Western Province Stormers and the Natal Sharks also won this round, the Sharks away at the ACT Brumbies (a result none of us managed to get). The Western Force stopped the Queensland Reds at home, their first home win in 663 days, and find themselves on top of the Australian Conference. The Eastern Cape Kings handed the Tokyo Sunwolves yet another defeat, while the Northern Transvaal Bulls came short against the Free State Cheetahs.
We again had a bunch of winners this round, but only George95 and Howie72 are on top of the pile after 2 rounds. wwe84 and gtho4 expected the Sunwolves to get their first win, which was not to be, while Davjack was looking for the Jaguares to win against the Stormers. Davjack takes home his first spoon for the season.

2015 Champions Otago Highlanders finally got their campaign started beating the Auckland Blues away. Waikato Chiefs continued to win, this time stopping the defending Champions Wellington Hurricanes at home. The other New Zealand side Canterbury Crusaders went to Australia and eked out a narrow 22-20 win over the Queensland Reds after trailing 0-17 at one point.
The ACT Brumbies were the only Australian team to win this round, beating another Aussie side the Western Force. The NSW Waratahs finished a first tour to South Africa in 8 years without a win, losing this round to the Natal Sharks after getting hammered last week by the Gauteng Lions. The Rebels escaped another defeat as they had a bye this round As mentioned before, the Sharks won this round. The Cheetahs managed a narrow win over the lowly Tokyo Sunwolves (when will the Sunwolves win their first match in the comp?) The Gauteng Lions took a depleted side to Beunos Aires and lost to the Jaguares.
The two Kiwis in our line up Howie72 and N-Bomb lead our comp too (the latter despite a match short too!)....wwe84 and N-Bomb picked up the first bonus points of the season for getting the Highlanders match right. ozzz2002 and Sypher took their first spoons while illiniman14 defaulted the round. Dizart won the round and could have won a perfect pick bonus if only he had faith in the Highlanders too

The Chiefs and Crusaders continue to remain unbeaten, defending champions Hurricanes bounced back from last round's defeat by thumping 2015 champions Highlanders, the Jaguares won yet again at home and have already equalled their total win count from last year, while the Tokyo Sunwolves are still searching for that elusive first win after yet another defeat. The Brumbies won too, for the 3rd time in a row over the Waratahs, while the Sharks came from behind to win over the Kings.
We had a great round, hitting our 5th best all time score. A 7/8 was not enough for a bunch of us to get a HoF as George95, ElfTwinkle and PaulE picked the lot, to zoom up to the top of the table. I would have given a "gimme" point to ozzz2002 for the first game, but Sypher begged to differ with the rest of us...wwe84 too went off the track and made some bold picks, which unfortunately did not come off. He takes home his second spoon in 4 weeks.

Catching up on results, but most seem to have gone on "predictable" lines. We hit 83% as a group, one of our best ever.
N-Bomb gets a "gimme" point for the first game, but he does not qualify for the HoF or the perfect pick bonus, which honor goes this round to paper_aero. Davjack takes a second spoon despite getting 5/8 right.

Either the comp is becoming too predictable or we are becoming too good at picking this ... 10 of us had a perfect round (that's crrazzyyy  )...the 4 who didn't, brought a semblance of normalcy back by trying to pick differently!...we had our second best round ever as a team in this comp!
No change out in our leader board, no change in the teams' fortunes either. Chiefs, Crusaders, Stormers all continue to win (Chiefs play Stormers next round); The New Zealand teams are still way too strong for the rest of the competition; Tokyo Sunwolves did not lose....but that's probably because they had a bye  They will probably opt out of next year's competition on mercy grounds. All the Australian teams probably will too, barring the Brumbies and the Waratahs

The Western Province Stormers took a neat revenge against the Waikato Chiefs. Not many gave them a chance after the thrashing they took last year at home to the Chiefs, but the Stormers proved they are more than capable of holding their own against the Kiwi side. Along with the Crusaders, the Stormers stay the last unbeaten sides in this year's competition.
Elsewhere, the Tokyo Sunwolves won for only the second time in their history in this comp, getting the better of the Northern Transvaal Bulls, who thus finish a miserable tour of 3 played 3 lost and a 1 win from 6 matches this season....the Bulls' worst start in Super Rugby since 2002! The ACT Brumbies comfortably beat the Reds, and Force, Hurricanes, Sharks and Highlanders all won as this round ended 7-0 to the home teams.
Super Rugby will lose three teams next year and revert back to a 15-team competition. South Africa will lose two teams (Cheetahs and the Kings), and Australia one (Force or Rebels). The Sunwolves and the Jaguares retain their places.
Dizart and PaulE took the round's honours and join the duo of Howie72 and ElfTwinkle to make it a logjam behind the leaders, George95 and N-Bomb. paper_aero went default this round otherwise, he would probably be in the bunch too....5 people shared the spoons, despite getting 4/7 right.

The Canterbury Crusaders had a lot of fun over the weekend and continue to stay unbeaten and on top of the standings. They next play the Western Province Stormers and that tie could provide more fight than the hapless Sunwolves. The Auckland Blues continue to be the weakest link in the super strong New Zealand Conference, going down this time to the Wellington Hurricanes. The ACT Brumbies had a good chance to consolidate their position on top of the Australian Conference but they blew it, handing the Melbourne Rebels their first win for the season. The Waikato Chiefs overcame a huge 0-24 deficit at half time to beat the Cheetahs. The Stormers could not repeat the intensity of last week and lost at home to the Gauteng Lions, while the Bulls picked up only their second victory of the season getting the better of the Jaguares.
ozzz2002 won his first HoF of the season and with a sole point bonus, went clear off the pack at the bottom of our standings. The Spoons are fast catching up with the HoFs now, with another 5 of them handed out this round. 3 of us (N-Bomb, paper_aero, srini701) won our first spoons, while Davjack made it 3 in 4 rounds and wwe84 made it a hat-trick of spoons. George95 continues to stay atop the standings, joined this time by ElfTwinkle, who won the second bonus point of the round. illiniman14 and PaulE were on default this round.

The Canterbury Crusaders continue to stay unbeaten, thrashing the Stormers this round. The Gauteng Lions are in second place after beating the Jaguares. The Chiefs, Hurricanes and Highlanders all won too, but the upset of the round was the Eastern Cape Kings beating the NSW Waratahs, a result none of us here saw coming (not even wwe84 or Davjack, our resident "upset pickers" ). The Sharks could only draw at home against the Rebels, again a result none of us foresaw, though Davjack gets his first bonus point of the season for going for an upset win.
Davjack's bonus point leaves only Sypher looking for one to fill that column on our table. A bunch of us again got the round's honours but at the half-way stage of the season we finally have our sole leader....George95 is on top but being hotly chased by not 1 or 2, but 4 people ... illiniman14 and PaulE defaulted for a second round in a row to slip back a little.

The Canterbury Crusaders extend their winning run to 9 matches; The Gauteng Lions won their 6th consecutive match; The Auckland Blues won for the first time in a month and extended the New Zealand teams' wins over their Australian counterparts this season to 15; The Eastern Cape Kings won back to back matches for the first time; Natal Sharks won on the road to stay second in their group behind the Lions and the Waikato Chiefs and Otago Highlanders won as well *yawn*
gtho4 won back to back HoFs and won a sole pick bonus point as well to move up the ladder a little. The Canterbury Crusaders continue their unbeaten streak, making it 10 in a row now after thrashing the Bulls on road. The Crusaders became just the second side in Super Rugby history to win their opening 10 games, after the 2002 Crusaders team who went on to record a perfect season. Can the class of 2017 repeat the feat? It will become challenging for the Crusaders now, as they play the Hurricanes and the Chiefs in the next two rounds.
In other matches, the Cheetahs managed to squander a 17-point lead in the last five minutes of their match to go down to the Highlanders. They have now dropped seven straight matches after winning two of their first three games. The Jaguares snapped a four-match losing streak, turning around a 39-27 deficit 14 minutes from time into a seven-point victory over the Sunwolves. The other New Zealand teams all won too *yawn* as did the Gauteng Lions.
We are continuing our record breaking run here too. As a group we lodged 91.6% success rate, our second best ever and the 3rd time this season we lodged a top 5 best score (in 11 rounds ). 4 matches were picked by everyone. All the 8 missed matches could be listed in our table (ozzz2002 probably missed lodging his pick for the Rebels-Lions game but I could not give him a "gimme" point thanks to wwe84 ). 6 of us had a perfect round and gtho4 makes it a hat-trick of HoFs. Howie72 replaces George95 out in the front while a high 6/8 still gets wwe84 and ElfTwinkle spoons for the round.

The Crusaders proved they are genuine title contenders, stopping the Hurricanes. They are 11-0 for the season. The Lions won too, as did the other title-contenders, the Highlanders. The Blues and the Reds won this round, but they are not title-contenders The Kings shocked the Sharks, while the Force had a rare away win, beating the Jaguares.
We had a full house and a bunch of us picked up HoFs with a score of 5/7. Every match had a pick, so there were 2 sole pick bonus points going out this round, to ozzz and Davjack. gtho4 makes it 4 HoFs in a row now.

The Canterbury Crusaders overcame the Waikato Chiefs and after 2 back-to-back dispatching of of two of their toughest rivals, look set for an unbeaten season....can they have one? The Gauteng Lions won too, but it's increasingly becoming clear to them that the road to the title may yet again go through New Zealand....they may well regret that loss in Beunos Aires when the season ends....The Stormers won as well and will take the other qualifier spot from the South African Conference. The Sharks have all but sewn up the wildcard spot from this conference. The Brumbies look well placed to win the Australian Conference after winning this round. Let's see....
paper_aero and ElfTwinkle had a perfect round, catapulting the former to the top of our standings for the first time since round 1. He joins Howie72, 2 points ahead of Dizart and George95. gtho4's run of HoF stopped at 4 and he's 3 off the pace now, alongside N-Bomb. Davjack takes his 6th spoon, 1 short of tailender wwe84 (these 2 together have half the spoons awarded this season so far).

We had just the second draw for the season...Auckland Blues finally managed to NOT lose to a fellow Kiwi team when they draw with the Waikato Chiefs....the result will probably hurt the Chiefs more I guess! The Queensland Reds lost at home to the Western Force and ElfTwinkle gets a bonus for that surprise result. The rest of the results were largely predictable, with the only "non-predictability" being about the performance of the non-Kiwi teams when they play one another...
wwe84 gets his first HoF for the season and moves off the bottom of the table....that leaves only Sypher and Davjack looking for their first HoFs still, with 3 rounds remaining. For a change there were more spoons handed out, including a first spoon for the season to Dizart and George95, leaving only illiniman14 (missing this round) and Howie72 spoonless so far.
