2017 Tipping Comp

The NRL season will be kicking off at the start of next month on Thursday 2nd March. The rule for this year's comp are the same as previous years, viz.

    • One point a correct pick, nothing for a loss.
    • Default if you forget to pick, the wooden spoon score.
    • Perfect picks score a bonus point.
    • If needed, end-of-season tiebreaker for podium spots will be HoF v Spoons. Largest margin wins, or if the margin is equal, most weekly HoF wins.
    • Deadline is kick-off in the first game, on Thursday night or Friday night AEST or AEDST, anywhere between 4:00pm and 8:05pm local time (there is no consistency re the day or the time, as the tv rights holders have made it a dog's breakfast). It could be earlier, if the first game of the round sees the NZ Warriors play at home.

This is the 17th edition of the NRL tipping comp at FT (it was the first-ever tipping comp).

paper_aero won it last year, followed by Howie72 and N-Bomb. Can they retain their crowns?

Put your name down if you'd like to play, and let's get ready to rumble!

  • Welcome to the 2017 edition of the NRL tipping competition. Last year we had 15 runners but this year we have 13. A big welcome to dg_dave who makes a foray into this competition while Copago, ASA and LeoDaVinci are absent form 2016.
  • Will paper_aero be able to retain his title and make it on the podium for the third year in a row? Will Howie72 and N-Bomb remain on the podium? Will N-Bomb extend his run of podium places to 4 in a row? Will dg_dave show he is a rugby league expert and take out the title? So many questions to be answered over the course of the season.
  • The season began with Brisbane travelling south to take on the reigning premiers, Cronulla, and left with a hard fought 4 try to 3 victory. It was just as tough for the beaten finalist from last year, Melbourne, as they battled Canterbury in torrential rain. After taking a 10-0 lead inside 7 minutes they did not score another try but held on for the win. Souths exploded out of the blocks in the wet against Wests Tigers to take the early lead but the Tigers roared back with the next 3 tries and did not look back as the headed to a comfortable away win. St George are picked by many to struggle this season and they opened their campaign against one of the more fancied teams, Penrith. It turned out to be a record win but it was the surprising Dragons who dominated the Panthers to take out the match by 32 points. North Queensland opened their season at home to Canberra and it was a thriller, going into golden point extra time where a Johnathan Thurston filed goal attempt hit the underside of the crossbar and stayed in play for Gavin Cooper to dive on the ball for the match-winning try. A superb first half from the visiting Sydney Roosters saw them lead 28-0 at Gold Coast, a poor second half saw them hold on to win 32-18. The Warriors took a comfortable 20-8 lead into the break but Newcastle came back to lead 22-20 going into the last 10 minutes. In the end a 73rd minute try was enough for the Warriors to earn their first Round 1 win since 2009. Parramatta were impressive in beating Manly away, it was the Sea Eagles tough defense that kept it as close as it was.
  • It was a friendly beginning to the tipping competition as we went 52/104 for a nice round 50% success rate. No game was tipped by everyone with the Warriors win over Newcastle being the closest as dg_dave was the only one not to pick this. The hardest to get correct was Wests win at Souths where only N-Bomb and ElfTwinkle had their crystal balls working.
  • A handful of weekly winners achieved 5/8, being Sypher, Davjack, Dizart, N-Bomb and ozzz2002. To mirror this a handful of earned a wooden spoon with 3/5, being wwe84, George95, Howie72, dg_dave and ElfTwinkle. The other 3 were in the middle with 4/5.
  • No one jumps out to an early solo lead and the same at the bottom, no one has dropped behind everyone else. The fighting for positions will get more intense as the season progresses.

  • It took the Sydney Roosters 9 games last season to get their second win but they have done that this season in just 2 games when they edged Canterbury Bulldogs in a 10 try thriller. It was a tad damp in Auckland as torrential rain had been causing floods in the Upper North Island but it was the Melbourne Storm who weathered the conditions the best to win easily over the Warriors in the end. It happened again, the Brisbane vs North Queensland game went into golden point extra time for the 4th time in the last 5 matches and it was Johnathan Thurston that once again kicked the winning field goal to give the Cowboys the victory. Newcastle lost the last 18 games of the 2016 season and the first game this season but 2 tries in the last 10 minutes saw them beat Gold Coast in front of their home fans to avoid 20 losses in a row. Despite scoring 3 unanswered tries in the first 12 minutes against Souths, Manly lost for the second week in a row at home when the Rabbitohs came storming back to run away with the match. After pushing North Queensland all the way in Townsville last week, Canberra Raiders opened their home season with a humiliating loss to Cronulla who picked up their 5th straight win in Canberra. Wests Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the 29th minute at home to Penrith but that was as good as it got as the Panthers then put 36 unanswered points past the Tigers in a complete mauling. Parramatta Eels have put aside last season's salary cap troubles with a second successive impressive win, this time away to St George.
  • illiman14 missed the Roosters vs Bulldogs match due to late tips
  • It was a slightly less successful tipping week as we went 47/103 for a 45.63% strike rate. No game was tipped by everyone with the Roosters win over the Bulldogs and the Storm win away to the Warriors both earning 11 of us a point. The hardest game to get correct was Newcastle avoiding 20 consecutive losses which only Davjack somehow saw this happening.
  • After 5 weekly winners in round 1 it was only paper_aero who achieved it this week when he went 5/8. It was the same with wooden spoons as 5 last week turned into 1 this week and the honour went to Davjack who picked 8 home wins but unfortunately for him, only 2 home teams won.
  • The only change at the top sees paper_aero replace Davjack in a tie for the lead with Sypher, Dizart, N-Bomb and ozzz2002. At the bottom it is down to two with wwe84 and ElfTwinkle 1 point behind a group of 6.

  • Melbourne enjoyed most of the possession and attacking chances against Brisbane but it took two richochets off two Brisbane defenders for Melbourne to score a 78th minute try and with the sideline conversion they stole the victory from the Broncos. Canterbury Bulldogs took their home game against the Warriors to the indoor stadium in Dunedin and it worked for them as they came from behind twice to win against a Warriors side that once again looked toothless in attack. An injury-ravaged Gold Coast fielded their most inexperienced team in 10 years and it showed early as the visiting Parramatta Eels raced to a 12-0 lead. It got worse for the Titans as players went down all over the place but they showed courage to tough it out and emerged with a well deserved win. A error-ridden and fiery match saw Newcastle go down at home to South Sydney where an elbow to the head followed by a back-fist from George Burgess saw him sinbinned and he can be thankful he was not sent off. This game also showed the NRL has a long way to go to in their attempts to get rid of concussion problems where swinging arms with force that connect with the head of the opposition are only put on report and nothing worse during the game. Sydney Roosters outscored Penrith by 3 tries to 1 but it was only desperate defense at the end that saw them hang on to remain unbeaten this season. The only smiles at 1300Smiles Stadium cam from the visiting players and fans as Manly shocked North Queensland with a comprehensive away victory. Canberra turned around a 26 point hiding at home last week into a 40 point thrashing of Wests Tigers at home this week. Defending champion Cronulla continued their shaky start to the season as they were edged at home by the visiting St George Dragons.
  • Every team this year has had at least one win after the first three rounds, the first time this has happened since 1973.
  • A big welcome to LeoDaVinci who joins us in round 3 and thanks to the evenness of the tipping competition so far, he starts only 3 points away from first.
  • dg_dave missed the Storm vs Broncos match due to late tips
  • Our tipping is reasonably consistent so far as we went 54/111 this round for a 48.64% strike rate. No game was tipped by everyone with the Rabbitohs win away to the Knights and the Raiders home win over the Tigers only missed by wwe84 and dg_dave respectively. Two games only had one correct tip with ozzz2002 somehow tipping Manly to win away at North Queensland and gtho4 hitting the right part of the dartboard with the Dragons' win at the Sharks.
  • Just the one weekly winner again this week but this time it was Davjack who went 6/8, if his pattern continues he will be in for a spoon next week. Two wooden spoons were handed out to Sypher and dg_dave though if dg_dave had not missed the first match he may have avoided his second spoon of the season.
  • Dizart and ozzz2002 sneak out to a one point lead at the top over paper_aero and Davjack. At the bottom dg_dave decided to be the only one to drop back and welcome LeoDaVinci to the competition and these two end the round one point behind a group of 3.

There were no golden woods given the first week...that should read 3/8.

  • Sydney Roosters maintained their unbeaten start to the season by comfortably accounting for a sloppy South Sydney Rabbitohs who struggled in attack. Penrith ran all over a hapless Newcastle side in scoting 7 tries while keeping the Knights scoreless, the second time this season they have kept the opposition tryless. It was more like a football (soccer) match at half-time in Brisbane with the home side leading Canberra 2-0, the Broncos then jumped out 12-0 before the Raiders hit back to tie it up with 7 minutes to go. Brisbane kept their heads witha field goal a minute later to escape with a narrow win. In a surprisingly completely one-sided match it was Manly who cruised to an easy win over Canterbury Bulldogs, keeping the visitors scorless. Cronulla showed they will not give up their championship easily as they accounted for an error-ridden and heavily penalised Parramatta. North Queensland started strongly against Gold Coast to be 10-0 up after 20 minutes and it was just as well the teams pretty much cancelled each other out after that, the Cowboys winning by 6 in the end. Wests Tigers looked to be turning their season around when leading Melbourne Storm 14-0 nearing half-time and having another try disallowed for obstruction, this proved costly as Melbourne scored right on the break and stormed home in the second half to also remain unbeaten this season. St George were too good for the Warriors and raced out to a good early lead and never looked back, each time the Warriors looked like getting back into the match they committed another error.
  • LeoDaVinci was running on default fuel this week.
  • It was a very good tipping week as we went 80/104 or 76.92%, not surprising when the wooden spooners went over 50%. Two games were tipped by everyone, being the wins by Penrith and Melbourne. Howie72 seemed to be a little confused when he was the only one to think the Warriors had a chance against St George, a chance that did not eventuate.
  • We are only into round 4 but we have our first perfect round as Sypher went 8/8 and earned himself a bonus point in the process. Another 4 wooden sopons were handed out but they were for a very respectable 5/8 (a score that would have got a weekly win in the first 2 weeks) and they went to wwe84, N-Bomb, Howie72 and ElfTwinkle.
  • Dizart and ozzz2002 maintain their one point lead at the top over paper_aero and Sypher this time as Davjack is replaced in the tie for 3rd. At the bottom LeoDaVinci went default and as a result sits at the bottom of the ladder but just 1 point behind a group of 4.

  • Canterbury Bulldogs overcame the Sydney wet, a number of disallowed tries and a 7-0 halftime deficit to beat the visiting Brisbane Broncos. Sydney Roosters were beaten for the first time this season after a converted try in the last 2 minutes saw Many come out on top after both teams had previously missed field goal attempts. North Queensland were not at their best but were good enough to overcome South Sydney at home, the Rabbitohs being kept to a single try for the second week in a row. Cronulla lead Newcastle by 12 points with 11 minutes left but 2 converted Newcastle tries in 4 ties tied it up but the Sharks had the final say with a winning 78th minute field goal. Three tries in 7 first half minutes proved to be enough for Canberra to take an unassailable lead despite Parramatta's attempt at a second half comeback. Melbourne Storm are the best defensive team so far this season and it showed again as they restricted Penrith to just 6 points while scoring 28 themselves to be the only unbeaten team in 2017. Gold Coast travelled to New Zealand and took a 22-12 lead into the break over the Warriors but they could not score again in the second half, allowing the Warriors to come back and overtake them with a 78th minute try. Wests Tigers woes continued as St George put them to the sword to easily earn the 2 competition points.
  • We had a full house this week though Davjack missed the Bulldogs vs Broncos match due to late tips.
  • We had another good tipping round when going 77/111 or 69.36%. One game was tipped by all of us, being the Cronulla victory over Newcastle but it could easily have gone the other way. The trickiest game to tip was the Bulldogs win at home over Brisbane where only ElfTwinkle saw this happening.
  • Three more weekly winners this round as LeoDaVinci, gtho4 and ElfTwinkle all went 7/8. We seem to have a pattern emerging with dg_dave as he did his best to drag down the success rate by going 3/8 and getting a third spoon. So far he seems to enjoy getting a spoon with every odd numbered round so next week he should be safe.
  • Dizart maintains a share of the lead, a position he has held for all 5 rounds so far. This time he does not have ozzz2002 keeping him company, it seems that the nose bleeds ozzz2002 has been getting for being at the top of the ladder has got too much for him so he has dropped a few rungs down to recover. As a result it is paper_aero and Sypher joining Dizart at the top. At the bottom LeoDaVinci climbs over dg_dave, Howie and wwe84 with his weekly win, his spot at the bottom is taken over by dg_dave.

  • Round 6 began with Brisbane comprehensively beating the Sydney Roosters at home, getting a small taste of what it will be like next year without their top halfback who went off in the 49th minute with a hamstring injury. Newcastle scored first against Canterbury and should have doubed their lead just before halftime but a pass was not given and the Bulldogs immediately scored as the half-time siren sounded, the second half was all the Bulldogs as they ran in 4 more tries. Penrith scored a late converted try to draw level with South Sydney but it was not enough as the Rabbitohs took the upset victory with a field goal with just 39 seconds remaining. Manly struggled to put any coherency in their play and it showed as they went down heavily to St George. An injury ravaged Gold Coast (with $4m of their $7m salary cap sitting on the sideline) were no match for a rampant Canberra, the visiting Raiders taking only 7 minutes to score the opening try and they never looked back. Wests Tigers roared out of the blocks to score 3 tries in the first 20 minutes away to North Queensland and held on to stun the Cowboys. The Warriors got back-to-back victories for the first time this season as they accounted for Parramatta, the Eels slipping to a 4th straight loss. Melbourne hosted Cronulla in a replay of the 2016 grand final and the rain had a big say in a low scorng match but it was Cornulla that once again came out on top to win for the first time in Melbourne since 2008 and hand Melbourne their first loss of the season.
  • We had a full house this week though dg_dave and Davjack missed the Broncos vs Roosters match due to late tips.
  • It was a below average tipping round as we went 49/110 or 44.54%. Canberra's win at Gold Coast proved to be the easiest to tip as only Davjack missed this while no one thought Wests had a chance to beat North Queensland. Somehow ozzz2002 was the only one to think Cronulla would finally win in Melbourne again.
  • Despite our efforts, there was only one weekly winner this round with gtho4 going 5/8. As predicted last round, dg_dave did not get a spoon as it was an even numbered round and the spoons went to George95, illiniman14 and Davjack (though he only tipped 7 games) with 2/8.
  • Dizart maintains a share of the lead, a position he has held for all 6 rounds so far. He only shares it now with paper_aero as Sypher drops a point behind. Sypher is joined on the podium's lower step by ozzz2002 (having recovered from his altitude induced nosebleed) and gtho4. At the bottom dg_dave remains 2 points behind despite a decent showing this round.

  • A tight first half saw South Sydney take advantage of a Canterbury error to kick a last play field goal to take a narrow 9-8 lead into the break. The second half saw the Bulldogs finish strongly with 3 tries in the last 20 minutes to take the win. Sydney Roosters put in a much better defensive effort than last week as they restricted Newcastle to just one try, the victory only sewn up in the last 15 minutes when they crossed the line twice to pull away. It looked like being a Gold Coast win in the South Queensland derby until the 78th minute when Matt Gillett charged down a Gold Coast kick, regathered the ball and passed to Brisbane's quickest player to run away for the game winning try. Melbourne looked comfortable leading at Manly 30-12 after 39 minutes until the Sea Eagles scored right on half-time and then twice more in the second half but it was not enough as the Storm hung on. Once again the Warriors could not score in the second half as Canberra turned an 8-6 half-time deficit into a 20-8 win at home. North Queensland were also well behind to St George at half-time when they trailed by 28-4 but like Manly their second half comeback fell just short as they went down 28-22. It was a masterclass performance by Cronulla as they kept their opposition tryless for the second week in a row, this time it was Penrith that was outplayed. Parramatta trailed Wests by 12 points midway through the second half but they scored the final 3 tries to take the comeback victory.
  • LeoDaVinci and illiniman14 were running on default fuel this week.
  • It was a superb tipping wewk as we went 78/96 or 81.25%, everyine got more right than wrong. It was helped considerably by us all tipping the Roosters and Bronco's wins. The hardest match to pick was the Manly vs Melbourne match as we were divided straight down the middle with 6 tips for each team.
  • Despite 78 correct tips with only 18 incorrect there was only one weekly winner this round with Dizart going perfect with 8/8 and earning himslef a bonus point. Following his trend of getting a spoon in every odd numbered round it was no surprise that dg_dave went 5/8 (a score that would have been good enough for a weekly win in 3 rounds this season) for the solo spoon of round 7.
  • Dizart's prefect round sees him jump out to a 2 point lead over paper_aero with the trio from last week still all on the last step of the podium. This is his first solo lead after being joint leader for the frist 6 rounds. At the bottom dg_dave remains 2 points behind LeoDaVinci despite the latter going default.

Get 62.5% and a Spoon? Had I gotten one more, the Spoon percentage would have been 75%!

  • It was 3rd time lucky for Manly when they beat Canberra in golden point extra time with a penalty that looked like it was going wide like the two attempts at the end of regulation time but this time it curved in and went over with the help of a post. Brisbane looked in control when leading South Sydney at half-time but 3 unanswered in 20 minutes after the break saw the Rabbitohs hit the lead. The Broncos levelled it up with 10 minutes to go and won it with a 78th minute field goal. It was too little too late as Penrith came from 18-0 down just after half-time to lose 18-12 to Parramatta, the Eels being lucky to hang on after a poor final 30 minutes. A strong second half from North Queensland saw them score 14 points and keep Newcastle scoreless to take the victory. Two tries in the final 13 minutes saw Gold Coast stun Cronulla and earn themselves a second win of the season. West Tigers and Canterbury Bulldogs were locked up at 12 all with 4 minutes to go when the Tigers scored the winning try after first looking for a field goal. Sydney Roosters looked to have their game against St George sewn up when a penalty took them to a 6 point lead with 5 minutes remaining. They then shot themselves in the foot by kicking early in the tackle count and giving possession back to Nene Macdonald after a ricochet and he somehow found his way through numerous defenders to the tryline, the conversion tying it up for the Dragons and sending the game into golden point extra time where the Roosters made amends with a game winning field goal. The Warriors blew another chance to secure a much needed win as they once again put in a poor second half performance at Melbourne with the Storm getting home with 2 tried in the final 15 minutes.
  • LeoDaVinci and illiniman14 were running on default fuel this week.
  • It was an average tipping week as we went 50/96 or 52.08%. It was not helped by 2 games being tipped by no one, being the Gold Coast and West wins. On the other hand we all picked Melbourne to beat the Warriors in the last game of the round.
  • Last week 5/8 was good enough for the wooden spoon but this week the same score earned Sypher, ElfTwinkle and ozzz2002 a weekly win. Following his trend of getting a spoon in every odd numbered round it was no surprise that dg_dave did not get a spoon in round 8, the honour instead going to gtho4 with 3/8.
  • Dizart maintains his 2 point lead over paper_aero who is joined in second by Sypher and ozzz2002. Will Dizart be able to go all season at the top of the standings? At the bottom dg_dave gains a point on LeoDaVinci who once again went default.

  • Not long after half-time Brisbane lead Penrith 28-0 but 3 tries in 8 minutes reduced the deficit ot 10 points with still plenty of time left on the clock. That was as close as the Panthers got as a final minute Broncos try put the icing on the cake. A first half Manly masterclass where they put 6 unanswered tries past South Sydney was more than enough for the Sea Eagles to demolish the Rabbitohs and heap more misery on Russell Crowe. It was no smiles for North Queensland fans at 1300SMILES Stadium as the visiting Parramatta Eels proved too slippery for the injury-ravaged home team. It was even more one-sided at the Gold Coast as the home team put Newcastle to the sword to win by 30 points. Canberra picked the wrong week to put on a terrible performance as an injury-hit Canterbury Bulldogs team outlasted them to take the narrow win. A late converted try saw Cronulla come from behind to beat the West Tigers, the home team restricted to just a penalty goal in the final 40 minutes. It was a tight tussle in Auckland as the visiting Sydney Roosters looked to have won it with a 75th minute field goal only for the Warriors to steal the win with a last minute penalty goal. Despite scoring 18 points in the last 20 minutes it was not enough for St George to overcome Melbourne's dominance, the win was Melbourne's first in Wollongong since 2005.
  • LeoDaVinci was running on default fuel this week.
  • ozzz2002, illiniman14 and Davjack missed the Brisbane vs Penrith match due to late tips.
  • It was a reasonable tipping week as we went 59/101 or 58.41%. We all managed to pick Cronulla's win at Wests though it looked dodgy for a while. The 10 of us who tipped in time all picked Brisbane to beat Penrith but I am too mean and evil to hand out gimme points. The hardest match to tip was Parramatta's win at North Queensland where only dg_dave's crystal ball was working.
  • Howie72 went 7/8 for his first weekly win. The trend has ended as it was an odd-numbered round but dg_dave did not get the spoon, instead it went to illiniman14 with 3/8.
  • Dizart maintains his 2 point lead over paper_aero who pulls 1 point ahead of Sypher and ozzz2002. Will Dizart be able to go all season at the top of the standings? At the bottom dg_dave leaps over LeoDaVinci who once again went default.

  • Canterbury Bulldogs looked like they did not know what they were doing in the first half against North Queensland and it wasn't until they were 24-0 down early in the second half before they remembered how to score tries and came back to 24-14 before the Cowbys sealed it with a late try and replaced the Bulldogs in the top 8. A little luck and some brilliance near the end saw Cronulla triumph over St George in a thriller, the winning try in the 72nd minute coming via a speculative pass, a lucky ricochet and a brilliant scoop pass. Robbie Farah put in a superb match-winning performance for South Sydney over West Tigers as the Rabbitohs dominated his former club. Once again the Warriors showed their Jeckyl and Hyde tendencies as they turned another huge half-time lead into a defeat, this time Penrith overturned a 28-6 deficit at the break into a 36-28 victory, there is something about the second half that the Warriors do not like. It is very difficult to beat Melbourne at home but Gold Coast gave themselves every chance to do so when leading 28-18 after 56 minutes before losing 3 players to injury and finding themselves facing a resurgent Storm to go 36-28 down with 8 minutes to go. However they dug deep and stunned their hosts with 2 more tries to take the narrow win. Three tries in the first 10 minutes saw Manly jump out to a 14-0 lead at home to Brisbane, a lead they held going into the break. That was as good as it got as the Broncos came back to score 24 unanswered second half points to head back north with the victory. Newcastle held tough in defence at home to Canberra and took a narrow lead into half-time. Like the Warriors, the Knights tend to struggle in the second 40 minutes but not this time as they ran away from the Raiders for an upset 14 point win. It was a lot easier for the Sydney Roosters as they put in a dominant display over Parramatta to cruise to a huge win.
  • LeoDaVinci was running on default fuel this week.
  • N-Bomb and Davjack missed the Canterbury vs North Queensland match due to late tips.
  • It was a poor tipping week as we went 44/102 or 43.13%. No game was tipped correctly by all of us, the closest being the Roosters win where 11 tipped this. No one tipped Gold Coast's upset win at Melbourne while only dg_dave and Davjack foresaw Newcastle's upset win over Canberra.
  • Three weekly winners as paper_aero, dg_dave and N-Bomb all went 5/8 though N-Bomb missed the first game, it is the first weekly win for dg_dave. The same number earned the wooden spoon as Sypher, illiniman14 and gtho4 all went 2/8.
  • Dizart sees his lead over paper_aero evaporate and these two now enjoy a 2 point lead over ozzz2002 who pulls ahead of Sypher. Will Dizart be able to go all season at the top of the standings? At the bottom,LeoDaVinci once again went default while dg-dave climbs over illiniman14.

  • Cronulla fought back from a 14-0 half-time deficit to beat North Queensland 18-14 for just their second home win this season. St George seemed to be able to offload the ball in tackles at will as they easily beat a disappointing Warriors which missed a massive 57 tackles. Brisbane dominated right from the start as they put Wests Tigers to the sword in thumping them by 36-0. It was just as dominant for Manly as they travelled to the Gold Coast to face a Titans team that seemed to still be celebrating their spectacular win over Melbourne last week. Parramatta conceded the opening 2 tries against Canberra but then scored the next 3 to take the lead early in the second half only for the Raiders to run them down late for a 6 point away win. Newcastle started against Penrith as they finished against Canberra last week only for their second half blues to return with the Panthers running in 5 tries after the break to take the comeback victory. Sydney dominated the first half away to Canterbury but only lead by 14 points at the break only for the Bulldogs to come out fighting in the seond half to close the game to 2 points. It was too little and too late as the Roosters scored late to seal the win. Melbourne ground out a 14-6 victory at South Sydney, once again a try near the end seeing off the plucky Rabbitohs who had been unable to convert their second half chances into points.
  • LeoDaVinci was running on default fuel this week.
  • illiniman14 missed the Cronulla vs North Queensland match due to late tips.
  • It was a good tipping week as we went 77/103 or 74.75%. We all tipped Cronulla to beat North Queensland and Brisbane to beat Wests. The trickiest game to get right was Manly's win at Gold Coast and even then, 5 of us were successful.
  • Sypher sees his name in lights again as he takes out the weekly win with his second perfect round of the season, an impressive 8/8 which sees him get a bonus point as well. Dizart earns his first wooden spoon of the season as he went 4/8.
  • The answer to the question "Will Dizart be able to go all season at the top of the standings?" has ben found and it is a no. His wooden spoon score sees him drop off the podium altogether as paper_aero takes a 1 point lead over ozzz2002 and Sypher. It took 11 rounds for this to happen. Of the regular tippers, illiniman14 remains at the bottom with a 3 point gap to wwe84 and dg_dave above him.

  • Origin season has started where some teams lose players to the State of Origin matches and there are lots of byes. South Sydney hosted Parramatta to begin the shortened round and 3 unanswered first half tries proved to be the lead the Eels needed to hold off a fast finishing Rabbitohs. Brisbane were missing 7 regular players due to representative duty or injury when they travelled to to play the Warriors and it showed as the Warriors did enough to get their 5th win if the season. Canterbury took a 6-2 half-time lead at Cronulla but it was the Sharks that earned the victory with a 78th minute field goal. Canberra hosted an understrength Sydney Roosters side that refused to go away and it was only a last minute converted try that settled it for the Raiders. 50,390 fans turned up to Suncorp Stadium for the first State of Origin game but it was the visiting Blues fans that were celebrating as Queensland were humiliated by New South Wales in a 24 point thrashing. The statistics suggested the game was quite even but there was only one team in it and now the Blues are favourites to get just their second series win in 12 years.
  • LeoDaVinci and illiniman14 were running on default fuel this week.
  • It was an average tipping week as we went 33/60 or 55%. No game was unanimous, the closest being Cronulla's win over Canterbury where only N-Bomb and dg_dave did not pick it. The trickiest game to tip was Parramatta's win at South Sydney where 4 of us tipped it.
  • There were no perfect rounds this week despite there only being 5 games. The weekly win went to Howie72, gtho4, Davjack and ElfTwinkle who all went 4/5. Dizart goes back-to-back spoons and is joined by dg_dave as they went 1/5.
  • A 1 point lead is maintained by paper_aero with the only change at the top being ozzz2002 pulling 1 point clear of Sypher. Of the regular tippers, illiniman14 remains at the bottom with a 3 point gap to dg_dave above him.

  • Billy Slater reminded Queensland selectors that he is still a force to be reckoned with as he starred for Melbourne when thrashing Newcastle 40-12. It was another lacklustre display from the Warriors, this time away to an injury-ravaged Parramatta, showing glimpses of brilliance but too much sloppiness as the Eels proved too slippery for them to handle. St George were not dominant but they did enough to grind out a win by 4 points over a much improved Wests Tigers. Despite heavy rain before the game both Sydney Roosters and Brisbane Broncos threw the ball around in an effort to get the upper hand, in the end it was a try right on half-time that gave the Roosters a big enough lead to hang on over a fast finishing Broncos. Despite a lack of possession it was Gold Coast that took a narrow lead at North Queensland into the break but they tired in the second half as the Cowboys kept them scoreless to win by 12 points. In a thrilling match the injury-ravaged Canberra side scoreda converted try 10 minutes from the end to take the game against Manly into sudden-death golden point but a crucial error gifted the Sea Eagles the ball and they took full advantage with the winning field goal. Canterbury were kept scoreless in their home game against Penrith as the Panthers ran riot score 7 tries and thrash the Bulldogs.
  • LeoDaVinci and illiniman14 were running on default fuel this week.
  • It was a good tipping week as we went 63/84 and I did not need a calculator to work out that was a strike rage of 75%. There were two perfect games as we all tipped Melbourne to beat Newcastle and St George to beat Wests. The trickiest game to tip was Penrith's win at Canterbury where 3 of us got it right.
  • George95 went perfect with 7/7 to take home the weekly win and the not so small matter of a bonus point as well. Three spoons were handed out as Howie72, Davjack and ElfTwinkle all went 4/7.
  • The top 2 cancelled each other out so paper_aero retains his 1 point lead over ozzz2002, the only change at the top is Sypher falling a further point behind in third. Of the regular tippers, dg_dave closes the gap at the bottom to 1 point with wwe84 being just above him.

  • Though it will not make up for the 2016 Grand Final loss, Melbourne got revenge over Cronulla with a tight win. After jumping out to a 12-0 lead inside 10 minutes, Melbourne were overtaken with a 72nd minute field goal only to regather a short kick-off and score the winning try a minute or so later. Former Newcastle player, Akuila Uate, scored twice to help Manly controversially beat Newcastle, his second try was awarded despite a knock on with the Sea Eagles winning by a try in the end. Brisbane did enough to overcome a spirited South Sydney at home but it came with a cost as they lost their five eigth to a shoulder injury close to full time. The Warriors had a rare away win as they beat Gold Coast by 22 points but they also lost their star five eigth to injury, somehow they managed to not throw it away in the second half. It was the Miracle in Bathurst as the Penrith Panthers scored twice in the final 3 minutes to stun the visiting Canberra Raiders, the final try being a length of the field effort. Johnathan Thurston returned to the North Queensland lineup and inspired the Cowboys to a big win a lethargic Parramatta. It was quite even in the first half as Wests trailed at home by 16-12 to Sydney but it was a dominant Roosters side that ran away in the second half to complete a 22 point victory. It had been a month to forget for Canterbury but they showed their bite is worse than their bark against St George as they slayed the Dragons by 16-2.
  • LeoDaVinci and illiniman14 were running on default fuel this week.
  • It was a reasonable tipping week as we went 61/96 which turned out to be a strike rate of 63.54%. There were two perfect games as we all tipped Manly to beat Newcastle and Sydney to beat Wests, this being the second round in a row no one has tipped either the Knights or Tigers. The trickiest game to tip was Canterbury's win at home to St George which saw only dg_dave and ElfTwinkle getting it right.
  • We had 4 weekly winners with paper_aero, Sypher, Howie72 and ElfTwinkle all going 6/8. Another three spoons were handed out as Dizart, George95 and Davjack all went 4/8.
  • A weekly win sees paper_aero increase his lead over ozzz2002 to 2 points with Sypher just another point behind in third, these three opening a small gap at the top. Of the regular tippers, dg_dave remains 1 point behind wwe84.

  • An injury ravaged Gold Coast travelled south to take on South Sydney and aganst the odds took a 20-10 lead into the break, however the Rabbitohs rallied to score 5 unanswered second half tries to complete their comeback. Both Melbourne and North Queensland had players unavailable due to State of Origin duty when they met in Melbourne but the game did not disappoint. A last minute Cowboys converted try tied the game and sent it into golden point extra time where the home team fans left delighted after the Storm kicked a winning field goal to remain top of the standings. Cronulla had a fright at home to West Tigers and it took 2 tries in the last 6 minutes for them to scrape home by 2 points in another thriller. Parramatta continued the home team dominance as they comfortably accounted for the St George Dragons. New South Wales were favourites to win the State of Origin series with a game to spare as they hosted the ageing Queensland team after dominating game 1. At half time this looked very likely as the Blues held a 16-6 lead which could have been more, they also turned down a kickable penalty right on half-time. Queensland scored within the first 15 minutes of the second half and the Blues started to feel them breathung down their necks. It was tense right to the end and the Maroons finally took the lead with just a couple of minutes to go and won by 2 points (the same 2 points that the aforementioned penalty would have given them). They head back to Brisbane for the decider.
  • illiniman14 were running on default fuel this week.
  • We welcome LeoDaVinci back after a very lengthy absence.
  • It was a reasonable tipping week as we went 41/65 which turned out to be a strike rate of 63.07%. There were no perfect games, the closest being the narrow Cronulla victory over Wests. The trickiest game to tip was the State of Origin where thanks to Howie72's jinxing of the Blues, wwe84 was the only one to correctly tip the Maroons.
  • We had 4 weekly winners with wwe84, paper_aero, Howie72 and N-Bomb all going 4/5, once again there were perfect games in the short round. Another two spoons were handed out as ozzz2002 and Davjack all went 2/5. Of the regular tippers only paper_aero does not have a 2017 spoon in his collection.
  • A weekly win sees paper_aero once gain increase his lead over 4 points with ozzz2002 being joined by Sypher in second, these three still have a small gap at the top. Of the regular tippers, dg_dave drops to 2 points behind Davjack.
