Australian Football League
AFL
2017 Tipping Competition

Aussie Rules, Australia's unique brand of football, will be kicking off on Thu 23rd March. The rule for this year's comp are the same as previous years, viz.

    • One point a correct pick, nothing for a loss.
    • Default if you forget to pick is the wooden spoon score.
    • Perfect picks score a bonus point.
    • If needed, end-of-season tiebreaker for the podium spots will be HoF v Spoons. Largest differential
wins, or if the differential is equal, most weekly HoF wins. If that's identical most bonus points wins.
    • Deadline will be start of the first game each weekend - usually a Friday night at 7:20pm or 7:50pm,
with the occasional Thursday night game.

This will be the 17th edition of the AFL tipping comp:

  • Welcome to the 2017 AFL tipping competition where we have 14 runners in the field, down on the 16 from last year with 22crows and ozfei missing in action. Can illiniman14 repeat his victory from last year? There are 13 people who are hoping the answer is no. Will any of the non-Australians figure out what the rules for AFL are? The answer to that is likely to be no as well....
  • Carlton vs Richmond has become the traditional opening match and like last year it was Carlton singing the blues as the visiting Tigers were far too strong, their off-season recruiting showing dividends already. Collingwood Magpies had their wings clipped by the defending premier Western Bulldogs but they can look forward to a promising season ahead as they competed well and never gave up. Port Adelaide powered home in the second half to stun 2016's beaten finalist, Sydney Swans, at the SCG. Melbourne Demons looked like increasing their losing streak against St Kilda to 15 when going behind by 24 points in the second quarter but from then on they started to dominate and ran out 30 point winners. Gold Coast fell behind by 46 points to Brisbane at half-time in the Queensland derby but came roaring back to tie it up midway through the final quarter but Brisbane hung tough to narrowly take the victory. Essendon welcomed back 6 of their 10 players who missed the 2016 season due to ban for the use of certain supplements and it showed how much they were missed last year as the Bombers deservedly beat Hawthorn in front of delerious home fans. West Coast Eagles flew high as they started their season with a 43 point thrashing of North Melbourne. Adelaide crowed the loudest as they demolished premiership favourite Greater Western Sydney by 56 points, showing they will be a force to reckon with this season. Fremantle hosted Geelong but it was not a good start to the season as the Cats headed back east with the four competition points after a comprehensive 42 point win.
  • The FunTrivia AFL competition started promisingly with a good showing in the first two game but it did not last as we ended up going 64/126 for a 50.79% strike rate. Our defending champion starts with a wooden spoon but there is a long way to go.
  • It was an away round with 7 of the 9 matches being won by the visiting team. We all picked Geelong to win at Fremantle but no one saw Port Adelaide upsetting Sydney in Sydney. An honourable mention to N-Bomb as he was the only one to pick Essendon to start the season with a victory over Hawthorn.
  • Two weekly winners to start the season as both ElfTwinkle and N-Bomb went 6/9 while a big group of 8 (too many to name) took home a spoon each with 4/9.
  • ElfTwinkle and N-Bomb take the early lead with a one point gap over a group of 4. The remaining 8 are battling it out to move off the bottom of the ladder, I cannot imagine there is much room on the bottom rung at the moment.

  • For just the third time since 1995, Richmond Tigers have won their opening 2 games of the season, this time they came from behind at half-time to beat Collingwood. Western Bulldogs overcame a slow start and a late Sydney comeback in the 4th quarter to win the grand final rematch by 23 points. Adelaide also had a slow start but they came home strongly in the second half to consign Hawthorn to consecutive losses to begin a season for the first time since 2009. Greater Western Sydney bounced back from a big opening round loss to earn a record breaking win over a woeful Gold Coast by 102 points, the winning margin and the 160 points scored being the best ever for the Giants. Essendon travelled north to Brisbane and left with the win despite the home team taking the lead early in the final quarter, the Bombers kicked the last 5 goals to run away at the end. West Coast took the lead for the first time at home to St Kilda in the final quarter and never relinquished it after that, St Kilda will be kicking themselves as they let the win get away with inaccurate goal kicking.Late in the third quarter Geelong were 32 points down to North Melbourne but theykicked 5 of the last 6 goals to steal a very late win by just a solitary point. It was a battle to the end but Melbourne came out on top over Carlton in the final quarter to win their opening 2 matches for the first time since 2005. Port Adelaide smashed a lethargic Fremantle at home, jumping out to a 32 point lead at quarter time and never looked back.
  • We could have had a perfect 100% strike rate but for 11 of us not going perfect, in the end we tipped an impressive 106/126 or 84.12%. It was helped by us all tipping the Greater Western Sydney and Geelong games correctly. The hardest to tip was Richmond's win over Collingwood and even then 8 of us got this correct.
  • Last week we had 7 away wins and this week it was mirrored with 7 home wins.
  • As I indicated above, we had perfect tipping rounds with gtho4, Howie72 and ElfTwinkle all going 9/9 and earning a bonus point. For ElfTwinkle it is her second weekly win in a row to start the season. In an amazing mirror coincidence, ozzz2002 starts the season with consecutive spoons when he went 5/9.
  • ElfTwinkle takes a solo 1 point lead into round 3 over gtho4 and Howie72 while ozzz2002 did not like the bottom run being so crowded so pushes 7 people off it and takes it over by himself.

  • Sydney hosted Collingwood in the opening mtach in round 3 and it was the visitors that lead for most of it only for the Swans to hit the lead with 10 minutes to go. However, this time the Magpies did not crumble, retook the lead and hung on for a 1 point win. It took a while for Greater Western Sydney to pull away from North Melbourne despite leading at every break but they did to win by 42 points, leaving the Kangaroos winless. Mother Nature and the West Coast Eagles threw everything they had at Richmond but it did no good as the Tigers triumphed to remain unbeaten. The game started in brilliant sunshine but ended in torrential rain with thunder and lightning. Accurate kicking helped Geelong defeat an inaccurate kicking Melbourne Demons side by 29 points despite 6 less successful scoring attempts. The first Adelaide derby was almost a game of two halves as Port Adelaide started strongly but Adelaide took the lead late in the second quarter and never relinquished it. The last thing Fremantle wanted was to face the defending premiers after being thrashed by 89 points last week against Adelaide but somehow they regrouped and stunned the Western Bulldogs to earn their first win of the season. St Kilda won for the first time this season but it was not pretty as they kicked 5 of the last 6 goals to pull away from a spirited Brisbane. Carlton also broke their duck in the Melbourne wet as the ended Essendon's unbeaten start to the season in a low scoring match. Gold Coast turned a round a 102 point annihilation from Greater Western Sydney into a record breaking first ever win over Hawthorn by an also record 86 point victory over the hapless Hawks.
  • wwe84 got confused when putting in his tips but it appears he was tipping Richmond to beat West Coast so I have given him the benefit of the doubt.
  • It was a disappointing tipping round as we only went 53/126 for a strike rate of 42.06%. It did not help that none of us picked the Collingwood or Fremantle upset wins and only Dizart foresaw the first ever victory for Gold Coast over Hawthorn. The easiest game to tip was Geelong's win over Melbourne as only wwe84 failed to get this.
  • It was an amazing turn around for ozzz2002 as he picked up a weekly win along with illiniman14 by tipping 5/9 to break, the same score as his spoon last week. ASA went 2/9 to earn his second spoon of the season.
  • 4/9 was enough for both gtho4 and Howie72 to join ElfTwinkle at the top of the standings while ASA takes over the bottom rung but is only 1 point behind and there is a long way to go.

  • Despite the scoreline it was a tough tussle between West Coast and Sydney that was reminiscent of finals football and it was not until well into the final quarter that the Eagles pulled away to make the win secure. Early in the third quarter North Melbourne held a 29 point Easter lead over Wester Bulldogs but in the end they were run down and it turned into a Very Good Friday for the Bulldogs. Both Melbourne and Fremantle looked to have game winning leads but in both cases the team that was behind mounted a comeback. In the end it was the Dockers that scored in the last minute to take a 2 point victory. Greater Western Sydney took their home game against Port Adelaide to Canberra and it worked out for them as a dominant last quarter overturned a small three-quarter deficit into a comfortable scoreline. Gold Coast Suns travelled to Carlton and were too hot in recording a 26 point win over the Blues. It was much easier in Adelaide as the Crows lead from start to finish in easily beating Essondon. It was a low scoring arm wrestle but in the end it was St Kilda earning their second win of the season by beating Collingwood. Richmond travelled north to Brisbane and make light work of their hosts to remain unbeaten, their best start to a season for 22 years. Hawthorn Hawks were horrible in going down to the Geelong Cats who cruised to a huge 86 point win.
  • ozzz2002 was running on default fuel this week.
  • George95 missed the West Coast vs Sydney game due to late tips.
  • It was a better tipping round this week as we went 83/125 for a strike rate of 66.4%. It helped considerably that 4 games were tipped by everyone - being the Bulldogs, Crows, Tigers and Cats wins. On the other hand, no one though Fremantle had a chance away to Melbourne.
  • Only one weekly winner this week and that is gtho4 who tipped 8/9, only missing the aforementioned Fremantle win. ASA makes it 3 spoons in 4 weeks with 5/9 and is joined by ElfTwinkle and George95 totake home spoons this week.
  • The weekly win was enough to see gtho4 take a 1 point lead over Howie72 with N-Bomb a point further back. ElfTwinkle's spoon sees her fall off the podium. Despite ozzz2002 going default, ASA remains 1 point behind him at the bottom.

  • Carlton Blues had 7 teenagers in their team of 22 and were no match for Port Adelaide as the home team hardly worked up a sweat in winning by 90 points. Brisbane had thoughts of an upset when leading Western Bulldogs by 32 points at half-time but it was all Bulldogs in the second half as the home team overpowered the Lions to win by 32 points. Despite losing 2 players to hamstring injuries, Adelaide romped home at Gold Coast for a club record 5th straight win to start a season. Sydney kicked 4 goals in the first 5 minutes but that was as good as it got for the Swans as Greater Western Sydney ground them down to win comfortably and condemn Sydney to their worst start in nearly 25 years. It was low scoring but that will not worry the Fremantle fans as their team snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, North Melbourne looked comfortable when leading by 29 points early in the third quarter and by 8 points with 3 minutes left but 2 late goals saw the Dockers sneak home to consign the Kangaroos to their 5th defeat in a row to start the season, their worst start in 45 years. Geelong also left it late when they kicked 8 final quarter goals to run away from St Kilda, the winning margin not showing the effort St Kilda put in. The big upset of the round was Hawthorn destroying West Coast by 50 points to secure their first win of the season though it should be no big surprise as the Eagles have only beaten Hawthorn once in the last 7 games against Hawthorn at the MCG. It was a round of last quarter comebacks as Richmond overcame a 20 point three-quarter deficit to edge out Melbourne in front of the biggest ever crowd (85,657) between these 2 teams. Essendon won the ANZAC Classic against Collingwood after leading for virtually al of the game but triumphing by just 18 points in the end.
  • illiniman14 was running on default fuel this week.
  • It was a good tipping round this week as we went 89/127 for a strike rate of 76.06%. It helped considerably that 2 games were tipped by everyone and 2 others by 12 of 13. On the other hand, we struggled to pick Hawthorn's win at home to West Coast with only wwe84 getting this right.
  • There was a handful of weekly winners this week with wwe84, gtho4, ASA, Dizart and srini701 all tipping 8/9. The spoons go to ozzz2002 and Sypher with 5/8.
  • Another weekly win was enough to see gtho4 double his lead over Howie72 to 2 points with N-Bomb another 2 points further back. ASA's weekly win sees him leap over ozzz2002 and Sypher with ozzz2002 now back at the bottom of the standings.

  • It may have been only 5 degrees celsius in Canberra but the heat was on as Greater Western Sydney held on to beat the Western Bulldogs by 2 points, inaccurate goal kicking costing the Bulldogs as they had 28 scoring kicks compared to 20 from GWS, the biggest miss happening at the end when they missed yet another goal which would have won it for them. Hawthorn had won 19 in a row in Launceston over the last 5 years but no one told St Kilda this statistic as they travelled to Tasmania and thrashed the Hawks by 75 points. Carlton heaped more misery on Sydney as they stunned the Swans to win by 19 points and leaving the visitors searching for their first win of the season. Port Adelaide travelled to Brisbane and 7 goals in the first 20 minutes allowed them to cruise the rest of the way to an easy 83 point win over the Lions. North Melbourne got their first win of the season after overcoming a half-time deficit to overcome Gold Coast. West Coast returned to home turf and dominated Fremantle in the Western derby to win by 41 points. It was a scrappy performance but Melbourne ended a 3 game losing streak with a win away at Essendon. A dominant second half saw Collingwood upset Geelong and run away to a 29 point victory. Adelaide are the only unbeaten team after 6 rounds after they annihilated a woeful Richmond by 76 points.
  • We had a full house this week though ASA missed the Giants vs Bulldogs match due to late tips.
  • It was an average tipping round this week as we went 70/125 for a strike rate of 56%. No game was unanimous though the Giants' in over the Bulldogs and the Crow's win over the Tigers only had one incorrect tip each. On the other hand, the trickiest game to pick was the Magpie's upset win at the Cats which saw only Sypher get this right.
  • Two weekly win awards were handed out this round with both George95 and chogobad going 7/9. A few of us owe ASA some thanks as he went 3/9 to earn a solo spoon, it could have been different if he was in time to tip the first game, if he had got that correct then another 4 of us would have joined him in taking home cutlery.
  • gtho4 continues to increase his lead, taking it to 3 points over Howie72. N-Bomb is joined in third by paper_aero and wwe84, they are just one point behind Howie72. It is getting exciting at the bottom with the results this week seeing ASA, Sypher and ozzz2002 sharing the bottom rung of the ladder.

  • If there was a game that St Kilda wanted to win, and needed to win for confidence, it was the game against the highly favoured Greater Western Sydney, the youngsters of St Kilda duly dominated late to kick 10 of the last 13 goals and take home the victory. North Melbourne had Adelaide beaten by quarter-time as they kept the Crows scoreless and scored 64 points themselves, after that it was just playing out the remaing 90 minutes until full time. It was Collingwood's 125th birthday but Carlton ruined their celebrations by beating their arch rivals in front of 70,279 mostly Magpies fans. West Coast are making Adelaide Oval look like a home ground as they won their 5th game in 6 attempts at this ground when they accounted for Port Adelaide despite the home team's fast finish. After 2 losses, Gold Coast got their season back on track when beating Geelong by 25 points at home, leading at each of the breaks. Western Bulldogs overcame a slow start when trailing by 32 points early in the second quarter to steal the win from Richmond. Sydney were never threatend when leading from start to finish against Brisbane to earn their first win of the season. Hawthorn almost turned a 35 point lead early in the 3rd quarter into a loss but they held on against a fast finishing Melbourne to sneak home by 3 points. Essendon lead Fremantle by 27 points in the 2nd quarter but tired in the Perth heat and Fremantle ran them down late to win by 37 points.
  • We had a full house this week.
  • With a number of upsets it was a poor tipping round this week as we went 49/126 for a strike rate of just 38.89%. Despite this, both the Western Bulldogs and Sydney wins were tipped by everyone. on the other hand, no one saw North Melbourne beating Adelaide or Gold Coast beating Geelong and only ozzz2002 gave St Kilda a chance of beating Greater Western Sydney. In the end 39 of the 49 correct tips came in 3 games while the remaining 10 correct tips were over 6 games.
  • Two weekly win awards were handed out this round with both ASA and Sypher going 5/9, everyone else went below 50%. Despite the low strike rate only one spoon was awarded and that was to ElfTwinkle who went 2/9. With Sypher's win we are now only awaiting paper_aero to get his first weekly win.
  • gtho4 will be laughing as those behind battle each other while he continues to increase his lead, taking it to 4 points over Howie72. N-Bomb, paper_aero and wwe84 are joined in 3rd by chogobad and they are just one point behind Howie72. ozzz2002 will be wondering what happened as he outscored 8 of us but still takes over bottom by himself as both ASA and Sypher got weekly wins.

  • It was a scrappy game but West Coast got revenge for their loss to the Western Bulldogs in the 2016 elimination final despite a woeful goal kicking effort in the second half where they kicked just 1 goal and 9 behinds. Hawthorn ran away with their game aganist Brisbane in the second half to win by 38 points, leaving the Lions in last place with just 1 win. St Kilda followed up their impressive win over Greater Western Sydney last week to win again, this time against a plucky Carlton which refused to go away, the Blues lead briefly in 3 of the 4 quarters but faded at the end. Collingwood rushed out to a big 1st quarter lead but an injury depleted Greater Western Sydney narrowed the gap to 1 point at half-time. The second half see-sawed and it took a last minute goal for the Giants to break the Magpies hearts and win by 3 points. Essendon had lost 12 of the last 13 encounters against Geelong but this time lead from start to finish, the last quarter comeback by the Cats was too little and too late. A superb 3rd quarter saw Melbourne surge past Adelaide and there was no comeback for the ladder leading Crows as Melbourne increased their lead even more in the final quarter to win by a very impressive 41 points.
  • We had a full house this week. Richmond trailed Fremantle by 30 points going into the last quarter but took the lead with 21 seconds to go only for Fremantle to kick their only goal of the 4th quarter after the final siren had sounded to snatch the dramatic win. God Coast took their home game against Port Adelaide to China but it was the Power that lit up Shanghai in thumping the Suns by 72 points in front of 10,118 fans (or the curious). Sydney breathed a little life into their season as the earned their second victory when comfortably accounting for North Melbourne.
  • We were back to an average tipping round this week as we went 73/126 for a strike rate of 57.93% despite no one tipping the Essendon and Melbourne upsets. No game was tipped by everyone but 4 games were tipped by 13 of 14.
  • Our expert from the Australian Rules powerhouse of India took home the solo weekly win with 7/8, still leaving paper_aero to complete this column. Three spoons were handed out to gtho, ASA and chogobad. These were the first for gtho4 and chogobad but the 5th in 8 rounds for ASA. Now just Howie72 and N-Bomb are spoonless.
  • The lead gtho4 was enjoying has been cut in half to 2 points, Howie72 remains in second place by just 1 point over wwe84 and srini701. N-Bomb and paper_aero drop off the podium. ASA's spoon sees him take over solo last from ozzz2002 but is only 1 point behind ozzz2002 and Sypher.

  • Geelong's season almost fully derailed after they lead Western Bulldogs at half time by 26 points only to head into the three-quarter break behind. However they managed to rally in the final quarter to end a 3 game losing streak. St Kilda came crashing back to earth after 3 wins in a row with a comprehensive loss to Sydney, the Swans showing their early season terrible form has well and truly gone and they will still be a force to reckon with. An injury depleted Greater Western Sydney trailed Richmond for most of the match but when it counted they were ahead, a last minute goal seeing them win the final quarter by 33-5 to claim an unexpected come-from-behind 3 point win. Adelaide got back to winning ways after 2 shock back-to-back losses to thump the helpless Lions by 80 points in Brisbane. Collingwood conceded the first 6 goals and only kicked 1 point in the first quarter but staged a come back that rivalled the Giants as they ended up downing Hawthorn by 18 points, running away late in the final quarter. West Coast's travelling worries continued after a 61 point annihilation by a resurgent Essendon. North Melbourne extended a club record winning streak over Melbourne with a 16th straight victory though the Demons refused to go away quietly but could never quite get their early lead back. Fremantle trailed 28-0 in the first quarter at home to Carlton but slowly and surely got back into the contest to emerge victors by 35 points in the wet. Port Adelaide and Gold Coast had byes after returning from China.
  • We had a full house this week though ASA missed the Geelong vs Western Bulldogs with late tips.
  • Another average tipping round this week as we went 61/111 for a strike rate of 54.95%. We all tipped the Adelaide win at Brisbane. The trickiest game to tip was North Melbourne's win at Melbourne which only ASA got, I suppose if we knew about the Kangaroo's long winning streak over the Demons then more would have got it right. The biggest surprise being our Indian expert failed to get this. smile
  • Speaking of our resident expert from India, he did it again and earned himself another solo weekly win with 6/8, paper_aero remains the only one without a weekly win. If this is mediocrity as he claims then I wonder what will happen when his tipping turns to being good..... Two spoons were handed out this week with both Dizart and Sypher going 3/8 leaving just Howie72 and N-Bomb without a spoon.
  • gtho4's lead has once again halved, he now leads by 1 point over Howie72 and srini701 who continues to rise up the ladder. The good news for gtho4 is that his lead cannot be halved in round 10. ASA remains at the bottom just 1 point behind Sypher, Sypher can thank ASA's late tip for remaning off the bottom rung.

  • Port Adelaide will be ruing their inaccurate goal kicking in the last 10 minutes as they kicked only 3 behinds which left the door open for Geelong to kick a last gasp goal to snatch the victory by 2 points. Hawthorn lead for most of the match against Sydney but the Swans powered to the lead in the final quarter only for the Hawks to dig deep and take the upset win with a late goal. Despite a sloppy start it was more comfortable for Western Bulldogs as they started to pull away late in the second quarter over St Kilda. Melbourne trailed Gold Coast by 24 points at half-time before a second half blitz saw them surge past the Suns into a 35 point voctory. The lead changed 9 times in the first 3 quarters in Richmond's home game against Essendon but it was the Tigers that finished the stronger to keep the home fans happy. Adelaide opened the scoring with a behind in the first minute and never looked back as they crushed Fremantle by 100 points. Collingwood's inaccurate goal kicking returned but Brisbane were unable to take advantage as the Magpies kicked 7 of the last 10 goals to run out 45 point winners. North Melbourne raced out off the gates to a 44-12 first quarter lead at Carlton before the Blues mounted a comeback to take the lead early in the final quarter before running out of steam and the Kangaroos pulled away late for the win. Greater Western Sydney travelled west and raided the West Coast Eagle's fortress, the lead changed 8 times in a thrilling final quarter but it was the Giants who finished on top and defeated the Eagles for the first time.
  • illiniman14 was running on default fuel this week.
  • A good tipping round this week as we went 81/117 for a strike rate of 69.23%. It was helped significantly by 4 perfect games as we all tipped Melbourne, Adelaide, Collingwood and North Melbourne to win. Only wwe84 thought Greater Western Sydney would beat West Coast in Perth which proved to be an inspired prediction.
  • Just one weekly winner this round and it is wwe84 who picks a superb 8/9, paper_aero remains the only one without a weekly win. Two more spoons were handed out this week with both Dizart and Howie72 going 5/8 leaving just N-Bomb without a spoon.
  • gtho4's maintains his 1 point lead at the top but wwe84 has replaced Howie72 in a tie for second with srini701. The pressure is piling up on gtho4 as the top 8 are separated by just 4 points. ASA remains at the bottom just 1 point behind Sypher.

  • It was a short round with just 6 matches and began with Port Adelaide demolishing a hapless Hawthorn, at half-time the Hawks had been restricted to just 3 behinds and were behind 62-3 though they were more competitive in the second half as the Power took their foot off the accelerator. Geelong were never seriously threatened in easing past league leading Adelaide despite the Crows finishing the stronger. Gold Coast kicked the first goal against West Coast before the Eagles took control for most of the rest of the first half, the Suns came back to take a narrow half-time lead which increased by three quarter time. Then it was the turn of West Coast to make a comeback and it looked like they would the win until a goal with less than 2 minutes left saw the Gold Coast fans leave happy. Greater Western Sydney did what they had to against Essendon as they overtook Adelaide at the top of the standings. The first away win of the round went to Richmond as a dominant second half display saw them beat North Melbourne for just the second time in 9 encounters across 6 years. Collingwood overcame a number of injuries and a never-say-die effort from Fremantle before they prevailed in Perth and record a third straight victory.
  • illiniman14 was running on default fuel this week.
  • An average tipping round this week as we went 42/78 for a strike rate of 63.84%. It was helped by 1 perfect game as we all tipped Greater Western Sydney to beat Essendon. The trickiest match to predict was Gold Coast's win at home to West Coast which saw just George95 and ASA successful.
  • Just one weekly winner this round and it is George95 who picks a superb 5/6, paper_aero remains the only one without a weekly win. Only one spoon was handed out this week with Sypher going 1/6 leaving just N-Bomb without a spoon.
  • We have a slight change at the top with a two George lead as George95 draws level with gtho4, srini701 and wwe84 are just a point behind. ASA leaps over Sypher to leave the latter at the bottom of the ladder, 2 points behind a group of 3.

So what happens with a draw? I managed 8 + the draw (R19) and am wondering do I get the bonus point? I suspect not but am always hopeful....
