Run by Snow Patrol...the lyrics wouldn't do much...you have to actually listen to the song. That's the brilliance of Emo music.

I agree about 'Cup of Coffee', awwww, sob. I'm not a stalky-type dude though. Well, not very often. Also very sad is 'And That's Why', by Kenickie, if you're already feeling depressed. There's a song by the Smashing Pumpkins whose title I presently can't remember that has the lyrics 'You were never meant to belong to me' that's sad too.

Apart from "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" here are some worthies for this page .....

Wednesday Week - Undertones

Here she comes to say good night
I'll get no sleep tonight
With a constant vision she still can't see
She was the girl for me

Wednesday week - she loved me
Wednesday week - never happened at all

There she goes I want to see her again
She's gone to school with her best friend
She only does the things she likes to do
Now she wants something new

can't beat a bit of Teenage angst!

The Price I Pay - Billy Bragg

My friend said she could see no way ahead
And I was probably better off without you
She said to face up to the fact that you weren't coming back
And she could make me happy like you used to
But I'm sorry to say I turned her away
Knowing everything she said was true
And that's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do

There's something inside that hurts my foolish pride
To visit the places we used to go together
Not a day goes by that I don't sit and wonder why
Your feelings for me didn't last forever
Girl I love you so much that sometimes it's such
I'd walk a mile with a stone in my shoe
And that's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do
That's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do

So keep that phone out of my way for the things I must say
Are empty if you don't believe they're true
And that's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do
That's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do

I love you so much that baby it's such
I'd walk a mile with a stone in my shoe
And that's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do

could've put up Man In The Iron Mask, Levi Stubbs Tears ... so many sad Bragg songs to choose from.

Once upon a time i had a tape with soooooo many songs like these on ... i'll have to dig it out. And i didn't even mention the Smiths.

I'm amazed no one has mentioned 'Angel' by Sarah McLachlan:

"Spend all your time waiting
For that second chance
For a break that would make it okay
There's always one reason
To feel not good enough
And it's hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction
Oh beautiful release
Memory seeps from my veins
Let me be empty
And weightless and maybe
I'll find some peace tonight

In the arms of an angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort there

So tired of the straight line
And everywhere you turn
There's vultures and thieves at your back
And the storm keeps on twisting
You keep on building the lie
That you make up for all that you lack
It don't make no difference
Escaping one last time
It's easier to believe in this sweet madness oh
This glorious sadness that brings me to my knees

In the arms of an angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort there
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here"

It nearly always makes me tear up; the combination of her haunting voice with those touching lyrics is beautiful.

Every time I hear the lyrics for "One More Day" by Diamond Rio, I imagine them being sung at at someone's funeral. It makes me bawl just to think about it. Just try reading them thinking of them in that context and see if it doesn't bring a tear to your eyes.

One More day

Last night I had a crazy dream
A wish was granted just for me
It could be for anything
I didn’t ask for money
Or a mansion in Malibu
I simply wished, for one more day with you

Chorus

One more day
One more time
One more sunset, maybe I’d be satisfied
But then again
I know what it would do
Leave me wishing still, for one more day with you

First thing I’d do, is pray for time to crawl
Then I’d unplug the telephone
And keep the tv off
I’d hold you every second
Say a million I love you’s
That’s what I’d do, with one more day with you

One more day
One more time
One more sunset, maybe I’d be satisfied
But then again
I know what it would do
Leave me wishing still, for one more day with you

Tears in Heaven - by Eric Clapton.
He wrote it for his son who died when he fell out of a window. My son has the same name. I can't listen to it without choking up.

Don't Speak by No Doubt makes be cry. Gwen Stefani wrote the song after she and a longtime boyfriend split up. The song was released about the time my husband and I were divorcing so it really struck a nerve. I'm happily remarried now, but the song will still bring tears when I hear it.

You and me
We used to be together
Everyday together always
I really feel
That I'm losing my best friend
I can't believe
This could be the end
It looks as though you're letting go
And if it's real
Well I don't want to know

Don't speak
I know just what you're saying
So please stop explaining
Don't tell me cause it hurts
Don't speak
I know what you're thinking
I don't need your reasons
Don't tell me cause it hurts

Our memories
Well, they can be inviting
But some are altogether
Mighty frightening
As we die, both you and I
With my head in my hands
I sit and cry

Don't speak
I know just what you're saying
So please stop explaining
Don't tell me cause it hurts (no, no, no)
Don't speak
I know what you're thinking
I don't need your reasons
Don't tell me cause it hurts

It's all ending
I gotta stop pretending who we are...
You and me I can see us dying...are we?

Don't speak
I know just what you're saying
So please stop explaining
Don't tell me cause it hurts (no, no, no)
Don't speak
I know what you're thinking
I don't need your reasons
Don't tell me cause it hurts
Don't tell me cause it hurts!
I know what you're saying
So please stop explaining

This song always brings tears to my eyes. For some reason I think of Kurt Cobain...

I’ve got another confession to make
I’m your fool
Everyone’s got their chains to break
Holdin’ you

Were you born to resist or be abused?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Are you gone and onto someone new?

I needed somewhere to hang my head
Without your noose
You gave me something that I didn’t have
But had no use
I was too weak to give in
Too strong to lose
My heart is under arrest again
But I break loose
My head is giving me life or death
But I can’t choose
I swear I’ll never give in
I refuse

Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
Your trust, you must
Confess

Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Oh...

Ohhhhhh
Ohhhhhh
Ohhhhhh
Ohh

Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
The life, the love
You die to heal
The hope that starts
The broken hearts
Your trust, you must
Confess

Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?

I’ve got another confession my friend
I’m no fool
I’m getting tired of starting again
Somewhere new

Were you born to resist or be abused?
I swear I’ll never give in
I refuse

Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
Your trust, you must
Confess
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Oh...

I was playing "More Songs from Pooh Corner" by Kenny Loggins for my daughter today, and got all choked up (again) at this one:

Turn Around- by Bellafonte, Greene, Reynolds

Where are you going my little one, little one
Where are you going my baby my own
Turn around and you’re two, turn around and you’re four
Turn around and you’re a young girl going out of the door
Turn around (turn around)
Turn around (turn around)
Turn around and you’re a young girl
goin’ out of the door

Where are you going my little one, little one
Dirndls and petticoats, where have you gone
Turn around and you’re tiny, turn around and you’re grown
Turn around and you’re a young wife with babes of your own

Turn around and you’re a young
Turn around and you’re a young wife with babes of your own

Where are you going my little one, little one
Where are you going my baby my own
Turn around and you’re two, turn around and you’re four
Turn around and you’re a young girl going out of my door

Actually, quite a few songs on that album choke me up. I'm a sentimental mommy...

A really sad songs is "Concrete Angel" by Martina Mcbride, its about child abuse, verry sad...:

She walks to school with the lunch she packed,
nobody knows what shes holding back.
Wearing the same dress she wore yesterday,
she hides the bruises with the linen and lace.
The teacher wonders but she doesnt ask.
Its hard to see the pain behind the mask.
Bearing the burden of a secret storm,
sometimes she wishes she was never born.

Through the wind and the rain,
she stands hard as a stone,
in a world that she cant rise above,
but her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place
where shes loved
concrete angel

Somebody cries in the middle of the night,
the neighbors hear but they turn out the lights,
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate,
when morning comes, it will be to late.

Through the wind and the rain,
she stands hard as a stone,
in a world that she cant rise above,
but her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place
where shes loved
concrete angel

A statue stands in a shaded place,
An angel girl with an upturned face,
a name is written on a polished rock,
a broken heart that the world forgot.

Through the wind and the rain,
she stands hard as a stone,
in a world that she cant rise above,
but her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place
where shes loved
concrete angel

This is a real oldie, I don't know if anyone else would even remember it. From the sixties, I think. "The End" (At the end of a rainbow you'll find a pot of gold. At the end of a river etc.) sung by Earl Grant.Makes me cry every time.

Also several songs sung by Tom Jones get me all choked up: "With These Hands", "Till", "The Green Green Grass of Home".

John Denver's "Hey It's Good to be Back Home" gives me a sweet melancholy feeling as well.

Now here's a dangerous thing to do. I'm asking for opinions. It's probably best answered by people who actually know this song. The song is "Songbird" by Fleetwood Mac. I'll show the lyrics below. Now, I've always considered it a particularly sad song that does make me tear up. I won't say why. Somebody recently told me that they thought it was a beautiful love song. What's your opinion? I don't think the words are enough, I think you need to have heard it (but perhaps not):

"For you, there'll be no more crying,
For you, the sun will be shining,
And I feel that when I'm with you,
It's alright, I know it's right

To you, I'll give the world
to you, I'll never be cold
'Cause I feel that when I'm with you,
It's alright, I know it's right.

And the songbirds are singing,
Like they know the score,
And I love you, I love you, I love you,
Like never before.

And I wish you all the love in the world,
But most of all, I wish it from myself.

And the songbirds keep singing,
Like they know the score,
And I love you, I love you, I love you,
Like never before, like never before."

I should add that I'd always believed that the third last line began with "But" rather than "Like"

The songs Mama by Il Divo and Had To Fall In Love by the Moody Blues get me every time!

"Mama thank you for who I am
Thank you for all the things I'm not
Forgive me for the words unsaid
For the times I forgot

Mama remember all my life
You showed me love, you sacrificed
Think of those young and early days
How I've changed along the way

And I know you believed
And I know you had dreams
And I'm sorry it took all this time to see
That I am where I am because of your truth
I miss you, I miss you

Mama forgive the times you cried
Forgive me for not making right
All of the storms I may have caused
And I've been wrong
Dry your eyes

And I know you believed
And I know you had dreams
And I'm sorry it took all this time to see
That I am where I am because of your truth
I miss you, I miss you

Mama I hope this makes you smile
I hope you're happy with my life
At peace with every choice I made
How I've changed
Along the way
And I know you believed in all of my dreams
And I owe it all to you, Mama"

At the momet I don't really have a song that makes me cry, but about 1 1/2 years ago it was Robbie Williams' "Something Beautiful" that had me absolutely in tears for ages.
At that time I really liked a guy but then I found out that he just played with me in one of the worst ways possible, which just make me lose my faith in men and love in general.
The song is about being alone, longing for love but not finding it. (Robbie promises that you will find love, but I just did not believe that part at that time).
Even now when I hear his song I am sometimes reminded of that horrible time..
The lyrics are:

You can't manufacture a miracle
The silence was pitiful-that day
And love is getting too cynical
Passion's just physical-these days
You analyse everyone you meet
But get no sign - loving kind
Every night you admit defeat
And cry yourself blind

If you can't wake up in the morning
'Cause your bed lies vacant at night
If you're lost, hurt, tired or lonely
Can't control it try as you might
May you find that love that won't leave you
May you find it by the end of the day
You WON'T be lost, hurt, tired or lonely
Something beautiful will come your way

The DJ said on the radio
Life should be stereo - each day
And the past that cast the unsuitable
Instead of some kind of beautiful
You just couldn't wait
All your friends think you're satisfied
But they can't see your soul, no, no, no
Forgot the time feeling petrified
When they lived alone

If you can't wake up in the morning
'Cause your bed lies vacant at night
If you're lost, hurt, tired or lonely
Can't control it try as you might
May you find that love that won't leave you
May you find it by the end of the day
You WON'T be lost, hurt, tired or lonely
Something beautiful will come your way

Some kind of beautiful x3

All your friends think you're satisfied
But they can't see your soul, no, no, no
Forgot the time feeling petrified
When they lived alone

If you can't wake up in the morning
'Cause your bed lies vacant at night
If you feel lost, hurt, tired or lonely
Can't control it try as you might
May you find that love that won't leave you
May you find it by the end of the day

You WON'T be lost, hurt, tired or lonely
Something beautiful will come your way x2

"Achin to be" by The Replacements always makes me cry. It's been my song for years now. Part of the chorus is the title of my blog.

Well she's kind of like an artist
Sittin' on the floor
Never finishes, she abandons
Never shows a soul

And she's kind of like a movie
Everyone rushes to see
And no one understands it
Sittin' in their seats

She opens her mouth to speak and
What comes out's a mystery
Thought about, not understood
She's achin' to be

Well she dances alone in nightclubs
Every other day of the week
People look right through her
Baby doll, check your cheek

And she's kind of like a poet
Who finds it hard to speak
Poems come so slowly
Like the colors down a sheet

She opens her mouth to speak and
What comes out's a mystery
Thought about, not understood
She's achin' to be

I've been achin' for a while now, friend
I've been achin' hard for years

Well she's kind of like an artist
Who uses paints no more
You never show me what you're doing
Never show a soul

Well, I saw one of your pictures
There was nothin' that I could see
If no one's on your canvas
Well, I'm achin' to be

She closes her mouth to speak and
Closes her eyes to see
Thought about an' only loved
She's achin' to be
Just like me

"She opens her mouth to speak and what comes outs a mystery" Yep, that me.

Another "oldie" Hell Is For Children by Pat Benatar always gets to me.

They cry in the dark, so you cant see their tears
They hide in the light, so you cant see their fears
Forgive and forget, all the while
Love and pain become one and the same
In the eyes of a wounded child
Because hell
Hell is for children
And you know that their little lives can become such a mess
Hell
Hell is for children
And you shouldnt have to pay for your love with your bones and your flesh

Its all so confusing, this brutal abusing
They blacken your eyes, and then apologize
Youre daddys good girl, and dont tell mommy a thing
Be a good little boy, and youll get a new toy
Tell grandma you fell off the swing

Because hell
Hell is for children
And you know that their little lives can become such a mess
Hell
Hell is for children
And you shouldnt have to pay for your love with your bones and your flesh

No, hell is for children

Hell
Hell is for hell
Hell is for hell

Bring Him Home

God on high
Hear my prayer
In my need
You have always been there

He is young
He's afraid
Let him rest
Heaven blessed
Bring him home
Bring him home
Bring him home

He's like the son I might have known
If God had granted me a son
The summers die
One by one
How soon they fly
On and On
And I am old
And will be gone

Bring him here
Bring him joy
He is young
He is only boy

You can take
You can give
Let him be
Let him live
If I die
Let me die
Let him live
Bring him home
Bring him home
Bring him home

from Les Miserables

The song "Sleepsong" by Secret Garden makes me cry every time. It's a lullabye that my mom was going to play for my dying grandmother. My mom played it for me in the car on the way to see my grandma, and right when it ended, my aunt called to say my grandma died. Then my mom played it at my grandma's funeral. It's a very sweet song that reminds me of her and I sob like a baby every time I hear it. Here are the lyrics (the whole "loo-li lai-lay" stuff looks kind of silly when written down...oh well):

Lay down your head and I'll sing you a lullaby
Back to the years of loo-li lai-lay
And I'll sing you to sleep and I'll sing you tomorrow
Bless you with love for the road that you go

May you sail far to the far fields of fortune
With diamonds and pearls at your head and your feet
And may you need never to banish misfortune
May you find kindness in all that you meet

May there always be angels to watch over you
To guide you each step of the way
To guard you and keep you safe from all harm
Loo-li, loo-li, lai-lay

May you bring love and may you bring happiness
Be loved in return to the end of your days
Now fall off to sleep, I'm not meaning to keep you
I'll just sit for a while and sing loo-li, lai-lay

May there always be angels to watch over you
To guide you each step of the way
To guard you and keep you safe from all harm
Loo-li, loo-li, lai-lay

Also, "You Could Be Happy" by Snow Patrol makes me a bit weepy.
