I've been meaning to post this days ago but haven't had time. Anyway, I was just wondering if there were songs that you have heard that made you sad...etc.
Songs dedicated to September 11, 2001 don't count, those are automatically listed on my list.
I'll start,
Mark Wills', "Wish You Were Here"
The lyrics are:
Wish You Were Here
They kissed goodbye at the terminal gate
She said you're gonna be late if you don't go
He held her tight, said I'll be alright
I'll call you tonight to let you know
He bought a postcard, on the front it just said HEAVEN
With a picture of the ocean and the beach
And the simple words he wrote her
Said he loved her and they told her
How he'd hold her if his arms would reach
Chorus
Wish you were here, wish you could see this place
Wish you were near, wish I could touch your face
The weather's nice, it's paradise
It's summertime all year and there's some folks we know
They say, "Hello, I miss you so, wish you were here"
She got a call that night but it wasn't from him
It didn't sink in right away, Ma'am the plane went down
Our crews have searched the ground
No survivors found she heard him say
But somehow she got a postcard in the mail
That just said HEAVEN with a picture of the ocean and the beach
And the simple words he wrote her
Said he loves her and they told her
How he'd hold her if his arms would reach
Chorus
Wish you were here, wish you could see this place
Wish you were near, wish I could touch your face
The weather's nice, it's paradise
It's summertime all year, and there's some folks we know
They say "Hello, I miss you so, wish you were here"
The weather's nice, in paradise
It's summertime all year and all the folks we know
They say "Hello, I miss you so, wish you were here"
Wish you were here
I know there may be a couple more in the back of my mind but I can't think of them at this moment.
Can you???

Some songs I think that are sad are Teen Angel, by Mark Dinning, and My Wild Frontier, by Faith Hill.

Here are some songs that make my eyes well up.
"If Tomorrow Never Comes" - Ronan Keating This is a cover of the Garth Brookes song. This means a lot to me as I was watching it with my father on MTV in April. We both said what a lovely song it was, and how we hoped that the important people in our lives would know how much we loved them if anything should happen to us (that's what the song is about). That night, my father was unexpectedly rushed into hospital, where his heart rate dropped to a critical level. My mother and I just sat and watched as surgeons and doctors rushed around him putting tubes into his arms and pads on his chest. Thankfully, his heart rate got back to normal, and his medical condition was dealt with. When he was able to speak to us, he told my mother that she had to listen to the Ronan Keating song, as a message from him. My mother hadn't heard the song and didn't know what it was about. When it next came on MTV, I called her into the room and she listened to it and cried. Now, two months and two operations later, he's in good health, and just awaiting one final operation. He's back home and he's going to be fine. Whenever I hear that song, it reminds me of how important it is to let people know that you care about them, as you never know what's around the corner.
Here are the lyrics.
"IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES"
Sometimes late at night I lie awake and watch her sleeping She's lost in peaceful dreams So I turn out the light And lay there in the dark
And the thought crosses my mind If I never wake in the morning Would she ever doubt The way I feel about her in my heart.
If tomorrow never comes Will she know hoe much I lover her Did I try in every way To show her every day That she's my only one And if my time on Earth were through She must face this world without me Is the love I gave her in the past Gonna be enough to last If tomorrow never comes.
Cos I've lost loved ones in my life Who never knoew how much I loved them Now I live with the regret That my feelings for them never were revealed So I made a promise to myself To say each day how much she means to me And avoid that circumstance When there's no second chance To tell her how I feel
So tell that someone that you love Just what you're thinking of If tomorrow never comes

Love musicals...I was in some! But I just can't get out..."When You Walk Through a Storm"! OH MY! and..."I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston...can't sing that one sensibly, either! I just totally choke! And finally..."The Dance"...Garth Brookes...don't really want to sing it, but I tear up, every time I hear it!

Oh dear, why am I admitting this? Perfect Day - Lou Reed (Just a Perfect Day, you made me forget myself. I thought I was someone else, someone good....) Beginning to see the light - The Velvet Underground (How does it feel to be loved?) Anyone who had a heart - Dusty Springfield (Anyone who had a heart would take me in his arms and love me too....) The Comedians - Roy Orbison (And I'm up while the dawn is breaking, even though my heart is aching...) Baby plays around - Elvis Costello (She walks those shiny streets, I walk the worn out floors. She's all I have worth living for...)

I don't cry easily but songs that hit the spot are many and varied, too many to mention but just a couple at random are,
Be My Downfall Tonight by Del Amitri - practically a word for word account of a situation I was in.
You'll Never Walk Alone by Gerry and the Pacemakers - because of the Hillsborough disaster.
Panis Angelicus - I will be singing it, by request, at the funeral of someone close to me, very old and very ill.
How Great Thou Art - Same reason as above.
Bright Eyes by Art Garfunkel - 'Watership Down' was a book that affected me greatly when I was a child and I still list it as one of my favourite books.
And this one is a wonderful one; Scorn Not His Simplicity by Phil Coulter. You need to know the story behind this one.
Phil Coulter is a very prolific and talented songwriter. Over the years he has done so much and in a very ecclectic style. He comes from Derry in Northern Ireland. He wrote Congratulations (Cliff Richards entry in the Eurovision) and was involved in most of the Bay City Rollers stuff. But then in complete contrast he has written some of the most poignant and touching songs I have ever heard. 'The Town I Loved So Well' a completely non-sectarian song about how the troubles of Northern Ireland has touched him. He had a son who some might say was profoundly handicapped. Some people prefer to call this "special" myself included having worked in a school for Special Children. The song "Scorn Not His Simplicity" was written for this boy. Its is a beautiful song and my boyfriend refuses to listen to it anymore because he gets so emotional, though he agrees it is an amazing song. Here is a small section:
How she cried tears of happiness the day the doctor told her its a boy, Now she cries tears of helplessness and thinks about the things he can' enjoy, Scorn not his simplicity but rather try to love him all the more, Scorn not his simplicity, oh no........
I urge anyone who has not heard this song to seek it out. If you can appreciate an emotional song this is the one for you. If anyone does seek it out I would love to hear your views on it.

How did I forget these ones? Seven Spanish Angels - Ray Charles & Wille Nelson He looked down into the brown eyes and said "Say a prayer for me" And she threw her arms around him, whispered "God will keep us free" They could hear the riders coming, he said "This is my last fight, "If they take me back to Texas, they won't take me back alive" There were seven Spanish angels at the altar of the Sun They were praying for the lovers in the Valley of the Gun When the battle stopped and the smoke cleared there was thunder from the throne And seven Spanish angels took another angel home She reached down and picked the gun up that lay smoking in his hand She said "Father please forgive me, I can't make it without my man" And she knew the gun was empty, and she knew she couldn't win But her final prayer was answered when the rifles fired again There were seven Spanish angels at the altar of the Sun They were praying for the lovers in the Valley of the Gun When the battle stopped and the smoke cleared there was thunder from the throne And seven Spanish angels took another angel home Dream Brother - Jeff Buckley There is a child sleeping near his twin The pictures go wild in a rush of wind That dark angel he is shuffling in Watching over them with his black feather wings unfurled The love you lost with her skin so fair Is free with the wind in her butterscotch hair Her green eyes bloom goodbyes With her head in her hands and your kiss on the lips another Dream Brother with your tears scattered round the world. Don't be like the one who made me so old Don't be like the one who left behind his name 'Cause they're waiting for you like I waited for mine And nobody ever came... I feel afraid and I call your name I love your voice and your dance insane I hear your words and I know your pain Your head in your hands and her kiss on the lips of another Your eyes to the ground and the world spinning round forever Asleep in the sand with the ocean washing over... Silver Threads and Golden Needles - Dusty Springfield Silver threads and golden needles cannot mend this heart of mine And I'll never drown my sorrow in the warm glow of your wine. You can't buy my love with money, for I never was that kind, Silver threads and golden needles cannot mend this heart of mine. I don't want your golden mansions with a tear in every room, All I want's the love you promised, beneath the halo moon. But you think I should be happy with your money and your name And hide myself in sorrow while you play your cheatin' game. Silver threads and golden needles cannot mend this heart of mine And I'll never drown my sorrow in the warm glow of your wine. You can't buy my love with money, for I never was that kind, Silver threads and golden needles cannot mend this heart of mine. ...oh, has somebody got a tissue?

When lefois and I were small, Puff the Magic Dragon by Peter, Paul & Mary was a very popular song. I would cry every time I heard it. Oddly, I can't remember if lefois cried also! The worst verse is:
A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys Cotton string and sealing wax make way for other toys. Without .....excuse me, I have to go and wipe my eyes.........

Holes in the Floor of Heaven by Steve Wariner
One day shining eight years old Grandma passed away I was a broken hearted little boy, blowing out that birthday cake
How I cried when the sky let go with a cold and lonesome rain Momma smiled said don't be sad child Grandma's watchin you today
'Cause there's holes in the floor of Heaven and her tears are pourin' down that's how you know she's watchin' wishin' she could be here now And sometimes if you're lonely just remember she can see there's holes in the floor of Heaven and she's watchin' over you and me
Seasons come and seasons go nothin' stays the same I grew up fell in love met a girl who took my name
Year by year we made a life in this sleepy little town I thought we'd grow old together Lord I sure do miss her now
But there's holes in the floor of Heaven and her tears are pourin' down that's how you know she's watchin' wishin' she could be here now and sometimes when I'm lonely I remember she can see there's holes in the floor of Heaven and she's watchin' over you and me
Well my little girl is 23 I walk her down the aisle it's a shame her mom can't be here now to see her lovely smile
They throw the rice I catch her eye as the rain starts comin' down she takes my hand says daddy don't be sad 'cause I know momma's watchin' now
And there's holes in the floor of Heaven and her tears are pourin down that's how you know she's watchin' wishin' she could be here now and sometimes when I'm lonely I remember she can see there's holes in the floor of Heaven and she's watchin' over you and me
Watchin' over you and me Watchin' over you and me Watchin' over you and me

Well, today I was driving and listening to the radio and "The Kids Are Alright" by The Who came on and I got choked up and shed a tear. Never has before but given the fact that John Entwistle died in his hotel room in Las Vegas yesterday and it was the first Who song that I had heard since I heard the awful news I was moved to tears. That band reminds me of all the changes and turmoil I went through in my youth and has always been my favorite. They shouldn't go on with their tour this summer, even though the accountants will try to force them to. It just wouldn't be right. There is no Who without John.

"I WIl Always Love You" - Whitney Houston. In much the same way that breaking a limb would make me cry.

This one doesn't make me cry, exactly, but it is a very emotional song, and always touches me---"Troy", by Sinead O'Connor. I have to admit that I'm not real sure just WHAT it's about, but it just touches something inside me. And it's beautiful, even if you don't know a word she's saying.

Definitely "And If My Heart Had Wings" by Amy Sky. It is such a sensitive, sad song. The chorus is something like this:
And if my heart had wings I'd fly up in the sky And bring back all the love That's missing from our lives. And if my heart had wings Then maybe I could see Just where you find the love The love that you give me...... That's probably not word for word, but quite close, I think.

Make Me Whole by Amel Larrieux.
it's really a song about intense love of a current lover, but if you've ever lost someone dear to you, it still works.
Darling, I want you to listen stayed up all night so I could get this thing right and I don't think that anything's missin' cause a person like you made it easy to do
I waited for so long to sing to you this song
your eyes are windows to heaven your smile could heal a million souls your love completes my existence you're the other half that makes me whole you're the only other half that makes me whole
I think the angels are your brothers they told you about me, said you're just what he needs and I find myself thanking your mother for giving birth to a saint, my spirit flies when I say your name
if there's one thing that's true it's I was born to love you
your eyes are windows to heaven your smile could heal a million souls your love completes my existence you're the other half that makes me whole you're the only other half that makes me whole
you make my dreams come true over and over again and I honestly truly believe you and me are written in the stars
and spend my whole life through to giving thanks to you
your eyes are windows to heaven your smile could heal a million souls your love completes my existence you're the other half that makes me whole you're the only other half that makes me whole
Aslo, I wrote a song about leaving the ones you love because it is the right thing to do. It usually breaks me up, even when I perform it.

Well...this is a bit of a really old song, "I'll be right here waiting for you" by Richard Marx brought me to tears when I heard it on the radio like the day after my friend moved away.
"I'll be right here wating for you" Oceans apart day after day..and I slowly go insane I hear your voice on the line..but it doesn't stop the pain If I see you next to never, then how can we say forever?
*Chorus Wherever you go, whatever you do..I'll be right here waiting for you. Whatever it takes, or how my heart breaks. I will be right here waiting for you
I took for granted all the times, that I thought would last somehow I hear the laughter, I taste the tears..but I can't get you near now Oh can't you see it, you've got me going crazy.
*chorus
I wonder how we can survive, this wont last. But in the end, if I'm with you...I'll take the chance.
Oh can't you see it? You've got me going crazy *Chrous

Well, unfortuanately I had to post this one, "Silent Night 911, aka "The God Song". The song that was made after the attack on September 11, 2001 & was played on the radio around the Christmas season. It is still unknown, (to the best of my knowledge), about who sings it. Here are the lyrics: You say you will never forget where you were when you heard the news on September 11, 2001. Neither will I. I was on the 110th floor in a smoke filled room with a man who called his wife to say "Good-Bye." I held his fingers steady as he dialed. I gave him the peace to say, "Honey, I am not going to make it, but it is OK...I am ready to go."
I was with his wife when he called as she fed breakfast to their children. I held her up as she tried to understand his words and as she realized he wasn't coming home that night.
I was in the stairwell of the 23rd floor when a woman cried out to Me for help. "I have been knocking on the door of your heart for 50 years!" I said. "Of course I will show you the way home - only believe on Me now."
I was at the base of the building with the Priest ministering to the injured and devastated souls. I took him home to fend to his Flock in Heaven. He heard my voice and answered.
I was on all four of those planes, in every seat, with every prayer. I was with the crew as they were overtaken. I was in the very hearts of the believers there, comforting and assuring them that their faith has saved them.
I was in Texas, Kansas, London. I was standing next to you when you heard the terrible news. Did you sense Me? I want you to know that I saw every face. I knew every name -though not all know Me.
Some met Me for the first time on the 86th floor. Some sought Me with their last breath. Some couldn't hear Me calling to them through the smoke and flames; "Come to Me... this way... take my hand." Some chose, for the final time, to ignore Me. But, I was there.
I did not place you in the Tower that day. You may not know why, but I do. However, if you were there in that explosive moment in time, would you have reached for Me?
September 11, 2001 was not the end of the journey for you. But someday your journey will end. And I will be there for you as well.
Seek Me now while I may be found. Then, at any moment, you know you are "ready to go."
I will be in the stairwell of your final moments.
- God (author unknown)

I can't think of any that make me cry but I nearly do when I listen to "Thank you Mom" by Good Charlotte (which I am listening to right now, hehe) It is the sweetest thing ever!

Yup, I love Amel Larrieux! I was surprised to see her already listed 'cause she's not a household name...yet. I wish she'd come out with another album. One day, one of my bestfriends was having a down day and I made her listen to the album. It got her out of the slump but I hesitated over letting her hear this song 'cause I was afraid it was gonna make her really sad. She loved it and said it would be the perfect song to play at a wedding. Her wedding. Does this mean I can't play it at my wedding?

The only two are "Like Jesus to a Child" by George Michael and perhaps a Boccelli tune or two.

Tom Waits 'Kentucky Avenue'. The lyrics are really touching and beautiful:
"eddie graces buick got 4 bullet holes in the side charlie delisle sittin at the top of an avocado tree mrs stormll stab you with a steak knife if you step on her lawn i got a half pack of lucky strikes man come along with me lets fill our pockets with macadamia nuts then go over to bobby goodmansons and jump off the roof
hilda plays strip poker and her mamas across the street joey navinski says she put her tongue in his mouth dicky faulkners got a switchblade and some gooseneck risers that eucalyptus is a hunchback theres a wind up from the south let me tie you up with kite string and i'll show you the scabs on my knee watch out for the broken glass, put your shoes and socks on and come along with me
lets follow that fire track i think your house is burnin down then go down to the hobo jungle and kill some rattle snakes with a trowel we'll break all the windows in the old anderson place and steal a bunch of boysenberrys and smear em on our face i'll get a dollar from my mamas purse and buy that scull and crossbones ring and you can wear it around your neck on an old piece of string
then we'll spit on ronnie arnold and flip him the bird and slash the tires on the school bus now don't say a word i'll take a rusty nail and scratch your initials on my arm and i'll show you how to sneak up on the roof of the drugstore
take the spongs from your wheelchair and a magpies wings and tie em to your shoulders and your feet i'll steal a hacksaw from my dad and cut the braces off your legs and we'll bury them tonight in the cornfield
