This year's Madness comp will be at the same site as last year. A bracket for 2017 will be setup once again at cbssports.com .. for those of us who played last year, you're half-way there, as invite emails have been sent by csbssports.com to all of last year's participants (using last year's email addresses); the email displays your reg'd ID. The scoring system remains unchanged. There are 63 games in this comp; we pick all of them in one go on the cbssports.com website:
1st Round (32 games) : 1 pt 2nd Round (16 games) : 2 pts 3rd Round ( 8 games) : 3 pts (regional semis ) Sweet Sixteen 4th Round ( 4 games) : 4 pts (regional finals) Elite Eight 5th Round ( 2 games) : 6 pts (national semis ) Final Four 6th Round ( 1 game ) : 9 pts (national final) Seedings: additional pts added for each correct pick, being the team's seed. |
Location: http://www.cbssports.com/login/ftmm.mayhem Group password: ---- if that doesn't work, try this link: http://ftmm2004.mayhem.cbssports.com/e If you've sucessfully logged in, you will see this in the top LH corner of the screen: 2017 Comp FT- if you'd like to join the Madness tipping comp but do not have a cbssports ID, there's a link on that page to register. You must have a cbs ID to play in this comp! Please note - you may, but don't have to, use your real name to register (surname, first name); but please pick something for those two fields that looks like your FT username (so that we know who you are).
- this also applies to those who played last year, but can't remember their ID and/or have changed their email address and thus can't retrieve their password (which they've forgotten) .. you will need to re-register.
- please check your reg'd email address in your account settings/profile after you login.
This year's tipping comp is the 16th edition of March Madness! No one has retained their title in this comp, and no one has won it twice (but some have been on the podium twice). The defending title-holder is kevinatilusa.. silver and bronze went to LeoDaVinci and yoyoandcigs. The winner of the 2008 comp, ralzzz, and the winner of the 2015 comp, toocool4u, hold the record for the biggest winning margin (see summary tables of last 15 comps in the post below this one) .. and doomed won bronze that year the hard way; he failed to pick any of the Final Four! Howie72 holds the record for the most correct picks with 51/63, achieved in the 2007 comp.

This year's Madness starts on Thursday, March 16 and the final is on Monday, April 3. The bracket will open for tipping when the field is inserted by cbssports.com, which should happen on Sunday, March 12. However, the last four teams to qualify will not be known until Monday and Tuesday (they will enter the comp as the four #16 seeds) .. btw a #16 seed has never won a game against their #1 seed opponents since the NCAA started the current Madness format in 1985. Last Four play-in: Tue/Wed 14/15 March now aka First Four First Round: Thu-Fri March 16-17 Second Round: Sat-Sun March 18-19 Third Round: Thu-Fri March 23-24 Fourth Round: Sat-Sun March 25-26 Final Four: Saturday 1st April Championship: Monday 3rd April Final Four at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona Deadline: cbssports.com will close the bracket of 63 picks at noon EDT on Thursday, March 16th. Good luck remembering your password (if you receive the email) or your ID (if you're reg'd but have changed your email address) .. and good luck registering if you're new! To confirm you're in and that everything's hunky dory, please post in the Group Message Board (it's in the Brackets drop-down menu). Rankings: http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-men/d1Good luck to all of us; and may the best man or best woman win!

It was an arduous journey through deep snow drifts, across wide and fast flowing rivers, up mountains, through dense jungle while avoiding dangerous mobs of basketball fans but I made it. It better not be snowing in New Zealand in March! Here in Virginia, though, that is a different story...8-12" are forecasted in the next 24 hours.

I'm in, unless I'm too late. You're only "too late" in this comp if the brackets are closed.

For 15 years, this competition has run, and 14 of those have all had the possibility of a champion returning to his or her perch atop the leaderboard to reclaim the mantle of victory. However, none have been able to do so in all of this time. This year’s field features 16 tippers. Half of the field has won before: ElfTwinkle (2005), Howie72 (2007), illiniman14 (2010), N-Bomb (2011), George95 (2012), themonarch (2014), toocool4u (2015), and kevinatilusa (2016). They all laugh in the face of fate, while 8 others assume they will take home the crown this year, all of whom have played in this competition previously.
And what do you know, we have two rebels at the top of the leaderboard trying to shake things up. N-Bomb and George95 occupy the top 2 spots despite the fact they’ve won this comp before! N-Bomb is out to a healthy 6-point lead, but his bracket does depend on a bit of a coup in order to hold together. He picked 1 North Carolina over 6 SMU, in a matchup I was sure at the time I wouldn’t see again... and that held true until I saw yoyoandcigs’s bracket, which had the same title game and result. In fact, that was only one of two similar championship game results, along with Howie72 and srini701 sharing 1 Kansas over 2 Arizona.
George95 for his part has a more traditional matchup in the championship game, with 2 Kentucky over defending champion 1 Villanova. However, he does have a bit of an upset in the Final Four, with 4 West Virginia occupying one of those spots. He also has the highest max possible points (MPP) of 385, anchored by multiple double-digit seeds in the Sweet 16 and a 7 Saint Mary’s run to the Elite 8.
If those don’t happen, then third place is had by one of those now-lucky few that haven’t won, gtho4. His highest seed in the Final Four is 2 Kentucky, so may be less prone to disappointment if favorites hold their ground (if they are in fact favorites over grossly-underseeded 10 Wichita State if they beat 7 Dayton). The next 3 spots are all held by returning champions – Howie72, ElfTwinkle, and kevinatilusa. Despite the gap between last and first, there are no brackets out of contention because only one of us – dg_dave – has lost an Elite 8 pick.
The day was only highlighted by a few interesting games. The game of the day was 8 Northwestern making their NCAA Tournament debut against 9 Vanderbilt. Northwestern led most of the game, but Vanderbilt made a strong late-game comeback to take the lead inside a minute. Up 66-65, a Vanderbilt player fouled intentionally thinking they were behind, giving Northwestern two free throws, which they hit. Now down 1 with 14.6 seconds left, Vanderbilt had a chance for a last-second shot, and wasted it by dribbling behind the 3-point line before shooting a long, contested 3-pointer which went off the mark, giving the Wildcats their first tournament victory ever.
5 Notre Dame played a relatively tight game against 12 Princeton, but the Ivy Leaguers could not hit a late shot to make that final blow and fell 60-58. 5 Virginia found itself down big early to high-powered 12 UNC-Wilmington, but their vaunted defense kicked in and they went on a 16-1 run to end the first half. The Cavaliers would lead most of the second half, and while the lead tightened at times, they walked away with a 76-71 victory.
There were only two upsets on the day, only one of which was actually an upset in Vegas. 12 Middle Tennessee was actually a 1.5-point favorite over 5 Minnesota, and showed why that was the case, beating another Big Ten team in the first round (after taking down 2 Michigan State last year) 81-72. 11 Xavier was the only true upset in every sense, turning a 46-40 deficit into a 76-65 victory in the second half.
After a relatively tame day (and one where a bracket I made purely by coin flips outperformed me....), what might we see on day 2? |

Looks like two have lost their finalist, and another has lost a Final Four pick with SMU's loss. Day two and the Madness has begun!

Last year by day 2, all but two tippers had lost at least one championship game pick. This year, only two have lost a championship game pick, and one other has lost a Final Four pick. This is thanks to 6 SMU, who had a 10-point lead with 11:36 left, and saw it completely evaporate just over 4 minutes later. With 36 seconds left, 11 USC hit a 3-pointer to go up 66-65, and the teams traded missed free throws the remainder of the game making that the final score. N-Bomb and yoyoandcigs both lost their championship game loser, while themonarch had a Final Four pick go down.
Despite that result, N-Bomb holds a commanding lead over the rest of the field. He’s hoping that his early picks fuel him to be the first repeat winner, while his MPP is only 6th among everyone. The leader in that regard is George95, a similarity to last year when he hung out in the bottom half of the standings for most of the tournament but held unique picks that could’ve brought him into the podium.
And maybe, just maybe, the bride this time. Or gold medal winner. LeoDaVinci stormed up from 7th into 2nd on the second day of action, and only barely sits behind George95 for 2nd in MPP. He also has the most active picks left among everyone, giving him more opportunities to bridge that 16-point gap between him and N-Bomb. Following closely behind is srini701, who came up from 8th into 3rd, picking the exact same results as LeoDaVinci today. The standings from 2nd to 5th include 6 tippers, and are separated by only 5 points.
We also have our first casualty, as Sypher, 90 points back from the lead, can only make up 63 the rest of the tournament on N-Bomb. You can’t fault him for any picks along the way, as there has been a shortage of big upsets and those that did happen he went the other way. With all 4 Final Four picks remaining, he could certainly rise up the table in the meantime.
7 Michigan and 10 Oklahoma State played the best overall game of the day, lighting up the scoreboards with two of the best offenses in the country by the metrics. Neither team trailed by more than 7 at any point in the game, but Oklahoma State had their 7-point lead in the first half, while Michigan had theirs with 23 seconds left in the game. Despite that massive advantage, Oklahoma State hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left, got the rebound after a missed free throw, and made a layup with 12 seconds left. Michigan made their next 2 free throws, and was answered with another layup 3 seconds later. Two more free throws put the game out of reach, but a late 3-pointer made it seem closer than it was at 92-91 as Michigan continued their hot run.
The Big Ten rebounded after a fairly bad first day, shown in no small part by 9 Michigan State getting down early, but then throttling 8 Miami (FL) for the rest of the game. The Spartans finished the game as 78-58 victors. 11 Rhode Island were the big upsets of the day, beating 6 Creighton 84-72, and hopefully justifying my placement of their game in the NCAA Basketball comp, as disappointing as they may have been in the regular season. Finally, if you can even call it an upset, 6-point favorite 10 Wichita State beat 7 Dayton 64-58 in a very evenly-matched game between two good mid-majors.
Let’s just say this write-up was written up late Saturday, so I have a feeling some bracket busting action will happen on day 3! |
