With 3 days in the books, the leaderboard is wide open. N-Bombs 16-point lead has melted down to 3 to LeoDaVinci, who has finished 2nd five teams in this comp, and now has the most MPP and his entire Final Four intact. There are clear paths to victory, however, for anyone in the top 6. N-Bomb has to hope 1 North Carolina wins the national championship and some upsets happen along the way, like 11 Southern Cal or his personal favorite 8 Wisconsin getting to the Final Four. LeoDaVinci has the clearest path to victory, as he is the only one in the top 6 to have not lost a Final Four pick. Howie72 has hitched his ride to 1 Kansas. George95 sees his gold going through bordering states, with his picks of 4 West Virginia, 2 Louisville, and 2 Kentucky in the Final Four. gtho4 and illiniman14 both have their hopes set on 1 Gonzaga, but whereas gtho4 has them playing Kentucky in the championship, illiniman14 has the Wildcats going down in the second round to 10 Wichita State. Another tipper with a clear path to victory is themonarch, who picked 9 Michigan State to win it all, and if that happens he will be the runaway winner of this comp. Defending champion kevinatilusa has a much more complicated path to victory, and cannot miss on many of his remaining picks.

Of these, only LeoDaVinci and gtho4 have never won this comp before.

While the official results show that only ozzz2002 is officially out of the running, after trying to jump on the 5 Notre Dame bandwagon for yet another year and being let down royally early on in the tournament, several other tippers are out thanks to shared picks and already-existing deficits. Sypher was the first to go last week. Perhaps the most surprising addition to the group this round is srini701, sitting alone in 5th place. srini701 can overtake N-Bomb and LeoDaVinci, but the only pick he and Howie72 disagree on is the South Regional championship, allowing srini701 to make up 5 points of the 11-point gap between the two. dg_dave is down 73 points to N-Bomb, and can only make up 35 with his remaining picks. ElfTwinkle is down by 59, and can only make up 46 of those. toocool4u is down 47 to LeoDaVinci, and can only make up 43. terraorca is down 43, and can only make up 27. yoyoandcigs is down 39 points, and can only make up 24.

The game with the most impact on our brackets was defending champion 1 Villanova v. 8 Wisconsin. The Wildcats took a very early 3-0 lead, but would not be on the right side again until 41-39 with 12:46 left in the game. After trailing most of the game, they would go up 57-50 with 5:31 left, and the writing seemed to be on the wall. A 7-0 Wisconsin run wiped that writing away, and they played evenly until 62-62, when the Badgers hit a layup with 11.4 seconds left. Villanova turned it over on their next possession, giving Wisconsin a berth in the Sweet 16.

The early game saw 4 West Virginia slowly dismantle 5 Notre Dame to the tune of 83-71. 2 Arizona played a very tight game with 7 Saint Marys for most of the game, but was never really threatened in the waning minutes and won 69-60. 11 Xavier steamrolled 3 Florida State 91-66. 4 Florida had a similar cakewalk as they crushed 5 Virginia 65-39. 4 Butler had their second half lead drop below 5 only once against 12 Middle Tennessee and won 74-65.

4 Purdue was seemingly going to walk all over 5 Iowa State, but they saw a 58-39 lead turn into a 73-71 deficit. That comeback may have gassed the Cyclones however, as Purdue pulled it out 80-76. 1 Gonzaga used some helpful calls from the refs (and an admitted missed goaltending) to fight off a huge second half 8 Northwestern comeback and win 79-73.

At the end of the second round, we have ourselves a new leader, and (surprise surprise) he hasnt won this comp before. LeoDaVinci lost his national champion pick in 2 Duke, but he still has the most MPP in the field. He now holds an 11-point advantage on N-Bomb, and the tussle between those two will be decided by the West regional (LDV has 1 Gonzaga and N-Bomb has 2 Arizona), the winner of 2 Kentucky (N-Bomb) and 3 UCLA (LDV), the right-side Final Four matchup (LDV has 1 Kansas and N-Bomb has 1 North Carolina), and whether LeoDaVinci can get some extra points from 7 Michigan beating 3 Oregon.

Thats not to say its a 2-horse race, however. Howie72 is the only tipper in the running for first with Kansas as their champion, and he has them matched up against Arizona with UCLA also in the Final Four. If those happen, he will win by a landslide over the current top 2, with srini701 likely close behind in second. George95 could ride that Kentucky train all the way to the championship, as well as 4 West Virginia in the Final Four and Purdue to the Elite 8, and he could easily be the winner. If Kentucky does in fact get to the championship game but loses to Gonzaga, we will likely be looking at gtho4 as our champion instead! kevinatilusa can win as well, but he will need a number of games to go very certain ways to get past those in front.

There were two official changes to the run for the gold medal: illiniman14 has joined the ranks of the fallen, as he is down 36 points to LeoDaVinci and can only make up 29 of those in the meantime; and themonarch is there as well, as he lost his favored 9 Michigan State. This time last year, only 4 tippers had a chance to win. This year, 6 still remain after 2 full rounds of play, and 5 of those have very realistic paths to gold (sorry kevin). Two of those 5 have never won before, including the leader and favorite. Last year I was also able to make scenarios at this time for how everyone would win, but trust me, theyre complicated with so many people picking different champions.

The first game of the day gave us our first great game (and a sad one for certain alums). 2 Louisville kept up healthy leads for most of the first half over 7 Michigan, including an 8-point halftime lead. They maxed out at 9 points at 47-38, but a 17-5 run gave Michigan the lead 55-53. Past that point, the Wolverines would push their lead out to 6 with 1:19 left, and Louisville could only get it within one possession before having give up foul shots, which Michigan did not miss, and earned their 73-69 victory.

The next game gave us our next great game. 10 Wichita State made grand claims of being out to win more than 2 games in the tournament, which would include beating 2 Kentucky along the way in a matchup of the 2014 game where the undefeated Shockers met their end to an 8-seeded Kentucky in the second round. This result would be no different. They played very evenly, with the largest lead at any point being with 4:09 left and Kentucky up 7. Wichita State fought it back to 63-62 with 56 seconds left, but that was all they would score, as their final two possessions were met with blocks and fell 65-62.

3 Oregon mightve thought they had an easy path to the Sweet 16 after their first game, having to play a 14-seed and then an 11-seed, but then 11 Xavier won on the opposite side of the bracket. 11 Rhode Island looked to be on the same path as their counterparts, taking a 26-8 run into the half to lead 8 at that point. That lead would get out to 10, but Oregon slowly whittled it down and tied it by 3:53 left at 68. The Rams would push their lead back to 72-68, but then went cold for the last 2:20. In that time, the Ducks scored 7 and came out ahead 75-72.

1 Kansas started slow but crushed 9 Michigan State 90-70. 3 UCLA trailed at the half, but turned it on for the second half and won 79-67 over 6 Cincinnati. 1 North Carolina led most of their game, but a second half run put 8 Arkansas up 65-60 with 3:31 left, at which point the Razorbacks stopped scoring at all, and North Carolina won 72-65. 3 Baylor (in thankfully subdued uniforms this year) led comfortably in the first half, but gave up the lead in the mid-second half to 11 Southern Cal; but the Bears were able to stabilize and held a solid 3-5 point lead late, finishing up 82-78. The last bracket-buster of the day wasnt even close towards the end. 2 Duke led 30-23 at the half, but then 7 South Carolina exploded for 65 second half points and were never threatened at the end as they won 88-81.

And now it gets interesting.

5-time silver medalist LeoDaVinci still has an 11-point lead, but with 7 Michigans loss, he no longer has any games that N-Bomb also does not have a stake in, and N-Bomb has 1 North Carolina alive for the national championship. Howie72 is only 5 points behind N-Bomb, and he has 1 Kansas alive for the national championship. gtho4 is also alive, banking on a 1 Gonzaga national championship as well as some good 2 Kentucky success. kevinatilusa is also still alive, but if all of his picks hit the rest of the way out, he can only tie LeoDaVinci and we go to the tiebreaker. Those are the final five tippers alive for the title, as George95 is now officially out after 4 West Virginia fell to Gonzaga.

So how does everybody win? Im not sure I can even cover all the possibilities, so well try broad brushstrokes here. LeoDaVinci is clearly the favorite. If Kansas goes to the national championship game, he beats N-Bomb no matter what. If UCLA beats Kentucky, then LeoDaVinci gets an extra 6-point boost and N-Bomb would need either:
1. Gonzaga beats 11 Xavier and North Carolina wins the national championship to win; OR
2. If Xavier beats Gonzaga AND North Carolina wins the national championship to tie.
If Kentucky beats UCLA, N-Bomb needs North Carolina to go to the national championship game to beat LeoDaVinci

In the matchup of LeoDaVinci and Howie72 where the former has a 16-point advantage, there is only one scenario where Howie72 overcomes the favorite. He needs UCLA to make the Final Four and then for Kansas to win the national championship to make up 17 points.

If it comes down to N-Bomb and Howie72, where the former has a 5-point advantage, it gets messy. If UCLA beats Kentucky and then North Carolina beats UCLA, N-Bomb wins if North Carolina wins in the Final Four or neither North Carolina or Kansas win in the Final Four. If UCLA beats North Carolina, then Howie72 just wins. If Kentucky beats UCLA, then Howie72 needs Kansas to win the national championship to win.

gtho4 has a very difficult path, but not impossible. If either of the following happen, he loses to LeoDaVinci:
1. Xavier beats Gonzaga;
2. Kentucky loses before the Final Four.
If Butler beats North Carolina, Kansas beats Kentucky in the Final Four, and Gonzaga wins the national championship, then they tie.

Against N-Bomb, gtho4 has to root against North Carolina. If they beat Butler, N-Bomb gets an extra 4 points. After that gtho4 has Kentucky and N-Bomb has North Carolina in the Final Four. If North Carolina wins, N-Bomb wins (and LeoDaVinci, from above). If Kentucky wins, gtho4 needs Gonzaga to make the championship game and then either Gonzaga wins it all or for them to just play Kentucky.

Against Howie72, gtho4 can overtake those 10 points if Kentucky makes the Final Four (since if they dont LeoDaVinci wins so its pointless to look at other options), and then gtho4 will be up 1 point. If Gonzaga wins the national championship, gtho4 wins; if Kansas wins the national championship, Howie72 wins; if Kentucky beats Kansas, gtho4 wins.

I dont have enough brainpower remaining to recap the games. 1 Kansas absolutely crushed 4 Purdue 98-66. The other 3 games were much better.

As is their style, 1 Gonzaga played an even first half with 4 West Virginia. Gonzaga then went up 45-37, but West Virginia got it back to a 52-49 lead. They carried it to a 58-55 lead, but didnt score the final 1:48 of the game, and Gonzaga went on to the Elite 8 61-58.

With 2:52 left, it seemed as if Gonzagas opponent in the Elite 8 would be 2 Arizona, up 71-64 at the time. Then Xavier hit a 3, made a stop, his 2 free throws, made a stop, and made 2 more free throws to tie the game. Arizona missed another shot, and Xavier got a layup to go up 73-71. Arizona missed their final 2 shots, meaning they missed their final 5 shots and didnt score for nearly the last 3 minutes, and the Cinderella Xavier moves on to the Elite 8.

7 Michigan had a magical run leading back to the Big Ten Tournament, and it seemed like they were matched up with a very similar team in 3 Oregon. The biggest lead either team had was 5 points, done by Oregon at 5-0 and 56-51. After it was 56-51, Michigan went on a 10-4 run and led the game 61-60. Michigan went up 68-65 with 2:04 left, and like the two losing teams above, just decided to stop scoring. Oregon grabbed the lead back with 1:09 left at 69-68, and that was the final score.

One more day of action is in the books, and we are down to only 3 tippers who can take home the championship. And two of them have never won before.

Giving their tournament lives to the Hunger Games basketball arena today were Howie72, who without UCLA cannot make up the 16-point gap between him and LeoDaVinci, and kevinatilusa, who missed out on his unique picks of both Baylor and Butler.

The gap between LeoDaVinci and N-Bomb has been narrowed down to 6. If North Carolina goes to the national championship game, N-Bomb will overcome the current gap. If they dont, LeoDaVinci will stay in front. gtho4 is still 25 points behind, but he got exactly what he needed with a Kentucky victory.

The day started quite boringly. 1 North Carolina got an early 31-16 lead over 4 Butlerand went up 52-36 at halftime; they basically maintained that lead through the second half and won 92-80. 7 South Carolina found themselves down 15-13 early with 3 Baylor (who was #1 for a spell this year), and then turned on the jets. A 16-0 run helped them go out to a 37-22 lead at halftime. South Carolina got out to 46-26, and they, for the most part, kept that 20-point lead until the end, winning 70-50.

The late games kicked it up a notch. 2 Kentucky and 3 UCLA matched up earlier this year in Lexington, KY, where UCLA won 97-92. There would not be a repeat. Kentucky led 36-33 at the half and held off UCLA at arms length most of the second half before pulling away to a 69-58 lead with 5:58 left, which would not dip below double digits the rest of the game, and Kentucky won 86-75.

8 Wisconsin put down the first 1-seed in the tournament, and found themselves up 18-8 early on 4 Florida, trying to make another Elite 8 run. However, the Gators would not quit, and finished the half outscoring Wisconsin 21-8 for a 34-32 lead. Florida took that advantage and expounded on it, going up 45-37 and then 51-41. However, 4:31 later the game was tied at 52. Florida then went on a 9-1 run to go up 61-53, and with 5:24 left they were up 68-56. With 2:10 left, Florida was up 70-62, and they went cold. They got only 2 free throws the rest of regulation, while Wisconsin hit several shots. Down 72-69 with 6 seconds left, Zak Showalter hit a 3 on the run to tie the game with 2 seconds left, and we went to the first overtime of the entire tournament. Wisconsin quickly went up, and eventually made it 78-73. They traded shots and free throws until it was 81-79 Wisconsin. Florida made an incredible block on a breakaway play and what should have been an easy 2 points for Wisconsin, but instead turned into a layup on the other side to tie it at 81. With 4 seconds left, Nigel Hayes got fouled and hit both free throws, putting Wisconsin up 83-81. Needing a miracle, Florida inbounded it to Chris Chiozza, who sprinted down the court and leapt from behind the line and hit a floater as time expired so the Gators won 84-83.

And now the end is near, and so we face the final curtain. The question of whether the non-repeat winner streak will stay alive rests solely on the result of 1 North Carolina vs. 3 Oregon. If the Ducks win, the streak remains alive and LeoDaVinci will be our champion by a single point. If the Tarheels win, N-Bomb will be our first repeat winner by a margin determined by the result of the national championship game.

The battle for third is hardly more wide open than that for first. Howie72 currently occupies the spot, but he has no active picks left. If 7 South Carolina wins its next game, he will take home the bronze. If 1 Gonzaga wins in the Final Four, gtho4 will overtake him for third. If both Gonzaga and 1 North Carolina win, illiniman14 will take home the bronze.

1 Gonzaga made quick work of 11 Xavier, making their first Final 4 in program history 83-59. 3 Oregon felt some heat at 27-26 with 5:59 left in the first half, but then went on a run and led 44-33 by halftime. 1 Kansas, despite scoring a minimum 90 points in their first three games, was held to only 60 and fell 74-60 as the Ducks went to their first Final 4 since the very first one in 1939.

2 Kentucky found some foul trouble in the first half against 1 North Carolina, helping the Tarheels go out to a 38-33 at halftime. Once back at full strength, Kentucky bounced back and they were up 64-59 with 5:12 left. However, a 12-0 North Carolina run put them up 71-64 with 54 seconds left. Undeterred, Kentucky came back to tie the game with 10 seconds left at 73, when Luke Maye hit a shot with 0.3 seconds left, giving North Carolina the win 75-73.

4 Florida found themselves up 40-33 at halftime against conference opponent 7 South Carolina, but the Gamecocks have proven to be a second half team this tournament. Sure enough, South Carolina was up 49-48 with 11:34 left, and the only time either team led by more than 2 for the next 10 minutes was when South Carolina led by 51-48. After that, they went up 70-65 with 59 seconds left, and Florida could not put together another late-game run like they did in their previous game, putting South Carolina in the Final 4 for the first time 77-70.

And the streak is over! Nice going to N-Bomb for picking up a 2nd title in this comp.

When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east. When the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves. Then will a repeat champion happen in the FT March Madness comp, and not before.

So stated the prophecy that brought us to today. Despite the impossibility of it all, N-Bomb has done the impossible, and after winning the 2011 March Madness comp, he has come back and won the 2017 version! All hail N-Bomb, First of his name, King of the Andals and the First Men you get the point. He rode North Carolina through the Final Four and to the national championship, earning him a solid 16-point victory over LeoDaVinci, who was the favorite for so long but was thoroughly undone by Oregon, who took out Michigan in the Sweet 16 and Kansas in the Elite 8. illiniman14 took home the bronze after surpassing gtho4 with North Carolinas win in the Final Four.

Gonzagas dreams of a national championship were undone with some questionable officiating in the second half of the championship game against North Carolina, but it also didnt help that the Bulldogs turned it over 10 more times than the Tarheels. In the end, North Carolina found themselves down 60-59 with 4:39 left, but outscored their opponents 11-5 in the remaining time and won the national championship 71-65.

Thanks to all our participants this year, and now that we know the impossible is possible, may we all have a fighting chance in the years to come!
