I have been suffering with a cheap and nasty broken plastic cistern for months, and treated myself to a decent solid one which was fitted today.

This is the Fairbairn Steam Crane located on Bristol's historic harbourside. I have mentioned this machine before in both my quizzes and single questions, but I thought that it was about time I posted a full image of this piece of industrial history. Although there are numerous examples of basic, mechanical Fairbairn cranes, this example at Bristol is the only existing steam powered example of the type in the world.

On the same day I came across the yellow-eyed penguin while out walking I also come across this sacred kingfisher.

Fortunately for my garden's resident toad that beady-eyed kingfisher is far, far away.

I could start a whole new 'Photo-a-Day' thread on this subject alone.

Virtually every day for the last two or three years, Abbey Sands, which is Torquay's main beach, has been graced with pictorial design carved into the sand by a local artist. Quite often the design celebrates a day of local, national or international importance with some quite exceptional works commemorating Holocaust Day, Mothering Sunday and Remembrance/Armistice Day. The man's work has proved to be very popular, being featured on more than a few occasions in both the local and regional press, and locals and tourists alike will throw money onto the beach, much of which is donated to local charities.

This image is far from perfect but I will endeavour to get some closer shots of future works.

Photo taken at the beach at Emu Point (Albany, Western Australia). The tree is a Norfolk Island pine which, as the name implies, is native to Norfolk Island (in the Pacific Ocean off the east coast of Australia). The trees were introduced by early settlers.

I'm not sure if I have already posted this. I checked back through the monthly threads and could not find it, so please forgive me if it is a repeat.

Last October, we visited the Berry Farm in Margaret River. The local birds know that the outdoor cafe is a good source of sugar as people sit down with a cup of tea and a scone and are happy to feed them. These are New Holland Honey Eaters eating sugar from Maynooth's hand.

I used to keep vegetables in this trolley but it's now ancient so I was going to throw it out. It got as far as the boot of the car en route to the recycling centre when my brain said "plants!" so I fished it out again, painted it, and planted it. We shall see what happens next...

The no waiting sign was once standard in Britain, now there is one about every hundred miles or so. This is the nearest known to me north of Northampton. Both signs still apply there.
