French Open 2017

Novak Djokovic (Men) and Garbine Muguruza (women) will try and defend their titles on the red clay of Paris from Sunday, 28 May, but there's a red-hot Spaniard gunning for his 10th title at Roland Garros as well. The women's section is far more open this year with a certain American lady not in the fray.

N-Bomb (women) and ElfTwinkle(men) are our defending title-holders here. N-Bomb is also chasing history on the Men's side of the comp in a different way.
Can he finish on the podium for a sixth consecutive year? We'll know when our results are tabulated.

Sign up here to take part. Tipping threads will be up when the draws are released later this week.

  • June 8, 1997: Gustavo Kuerten wins the French Open, his maiden title on the tour...the first person to win a Grand Slam title as their first title. Jelena Ostapenko is born in Riga, Latvia on that day. 20 years later, Ostapenko lives out a dream, winning the French Open, her maiden title on the tour, the second person to do so! Amazing Coincidence or what!
  • To quote the Roland Garros website, "Tennis was left hailing perhaps its most startling women’s champion in a generation as the unseeded Ostapenko, ranked only 47th in the world and without a single tour-level title to her name before the tournament, came from a set and 3-0 down to destroy the Romanian favourite 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 with a blizzard of winners on Philippe-Chatrier Court." Not even our own wonderful wizard of Oz foresaw this name anywhere on his wide radar!
  • All 8 women quarter-finalists were seeking their first Grand Slam title, probably the first time ever this has happened since seedings were introduced in tennis! And yet, we managed to pick 7 of the 8 quarter-finalists between us, except that one name that mattered the most smile
  • In the most open of "Opens", N-Bomb rode the Timea Bacsinzky wagon to yet another title in 2017....If last year he picked Yelena Putintseva to make it, this year he backed the Swiss girl to reach the last 4...which she duly did, earning N-Bomb almost double the points of even our bronze medallist paper_aero! Timea Bacsinzky also earns toocool4u a silver medal, making it 3/3 in the Slams for the year for our friend. No gold medal yet...
  • Ozzz2002 and wwe84 had just 1 right pick out of 15, but those single picks were still better than the 3 picks of gtho4, who thus ends up in the cellar for this year.
  • Congrats then to N-Bomb for successfully defending his title on the distaff side...he has a more imposing record to defend on the men's side...can he do it? We'll know when the men's results are tabulated....

  • The winner of Roland Garros 2017 was probably a foregone conclusion once a certain left-hander from Spain swept the major titles on clay in the run up to the event (though it's a different matter that 2 Australians still decided to back others for the win in our comp here wink ) 10 of us picked Rafael Nadal and he duly delivered the "decima", an unprecedented 10th singles title at the French Open, going past the 9 of Martina Navratilova at Wimbledon! Nadal did not drop a single set during the 2 weeks (the 3rd time he was achieving this feat) and is now the only person to hold 10 title or more in a single tournament at 3 different tournaments...who's to say he won't win some more titles on the Paris Clay?
  • It was always a battle of who would be the other finalist or who would eventually make it to the last 8....7 of the top 8 seeds made it to the last 8 and 3 of the top 4 were in the semifinals....that 4th semifinalist (Dominic Thiem) was probably our only blemish here too. Our quarterfinal picks were always going to make the difference in our standings and so it proved....srini701's inspired pick of Pablo Carreno Busta to make it paid off, handing him the title he last won in 2013...Fifiona81 only differed from srini by picking Cilic instead, and the 13 points were the only difference between them as they both landed 13/15 picks right. toocool4u edged out ElfTwinkle and Howie72 for the bronze medal by a single point to keep up a very interesting piece of stat alive...toocool4u is now 4/4 in 2017 in the Grand Slams...and would be the person to watch out for when Wimbledon rolls in a month smilee
  • All this means N-Bomb is suddenly off the picture...he won a medal in 5 consecutive French Opens Men's (3 bronze, 2 silvers) before this dip now. gtho4 picked Nadal as his winner but he (and ozzz2002) lodged their tips well after round 2 started, so I had to discount Nadal's points for gtho4. Sorry, George!
  • Congrats then to our podium, commiserations to the rest of us, watch out for toocool4u, and make sure you are on time to lodge your picks at Wimbledon in early July now grin wink
