For the past several months doing crosswords using Firefox has been boggy for me -- the letters are very slow to enter into the boxes and the last letter in each word doesn't even show up until I go to the next word. I've been doing them satisfactorily on the Edge browser, but now with the latest Windows 10 update a few days ago, the Edge version of crosswords is messed up too -- I get the green highlights, but no letters can be entered into the boxes.

I checked and I do have the latest version of Adobe Flash Player. Does anyone know what I should do to fix this problem?

Hmmm not sure what to suggest... I haven't tried crosswords myself in months.

Just installed the newest flash on my firefox (windows 10) and it all works as expected.

( That said, the plan IS to redo the crossword app to use HTML5, so that flash / plug ins aren't required at all. We're looking at fall for that project to be complete )

Thanks for the replies, Terry. I guess I'll just keep hobbling along with them until then. I generally don't do more than a couple of them per week, so I'll live smile

Verbonica, you aren't alone. I have exactly the same problem using Firefox on Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium 64-bit and haven't found a solution.
Good to hear about the move to HTML5 since Flash is such a security risk.

Have you tried clicking into the crossword? When it freshly loads, you have the highlight but cannot type. Click into any of the boxes, then back to where you want to be (if you want to start with 1 across) and then you should be able to type.

After changing windows and coming back, you'll have to do the same thing again.

At least that works for me.

Wesley,

I just tried that and no difference -- still no letters can be typed. That's on the MS Edge browser; and it worked fine until last week.

On Firefox, I can type the letters and they sort of slowly and haltingly appear, except for the last letter in each word, which doesn't show up until I go to the next word. Also, the highlight sometimes looks more like a green stripe across/down the boxes, rather than the usual full green. Crosswords worked fine on Firefox up until a few months ago too. I can only guess that it's because of something in the Windows updates?

samak,

Sorry it's happening to you too, but it does help to know that I'm not alone smile

Verbonica, I just tried playing a crossword on Firefox. Mine's doing the same thing but I have absolutely no problem playing on Chrome or Opera. You might want to try a new browser.

Good news about the HTML5,Terry. Perhaps that will solve the problem I mentioned in a post a little while ago (sometimes not enough room to display the full clues).

Thanks for that!

Thanks for the information Barbarini. So it does appear to be a browser problem.

If I wasn't concerned about privacy I might try Chrome, but since Google hoovers up as much information about everybody as it can I think I will stick with the less intrusive Firefox.

As Verbonica said " I generally don't do more than a couple of them per week, so I'll live" until we get HTML5.

I'm using Firefox and Windows (both up to date) and crosswords are working for me much as they always have.

As for Chrome and hogging data, you can opt out of all of that.

"As for Chrome and hogging data, you can opt out of all of that."

Not true unfortunately. You can turn some of it off but they are still recording loads of information about you and your browsing habits etc.
