Wimbledon 2017

The "oldies" have struck back with a vengeance in 2017, with Roger Federer winning the Australian Open and Rafael Nadal yawning his way to a 10th title at Roland Garros....Novak Djokovic is sliding down and Andy Murray will have additional pressure as the defending champion. Who do you think will make it in Wimbledon 2017?

The women's section is extremely wide open with neither Serena nor Sharapova in the field. Azarenka and Kvitova are returning back, but Angelique Kerber is sliding now. It's anybody's slam to win this year.

N-Bomb and illiniman14 are defending their titles here in our comps, but Gerorge95 had 2 silver medals at Wimbledon last year, while toocool4u is 4/4 in slams this year....If you think you can do better, please sign up here. Tipping threads will be up soon as the draws are out next week.

  • There was to be no fairy tale ending for Petra Kvitova at the Wimbledon. In the absence of Serena Williams and the indifferent form of the top players, most of us picked her or Karolina Pliskova to win it all, but alas, the pressure probably was too much for the poor lady. She crashed out in round 2. There was to be no fairy tale finish for returning Mum Victoria Azarenka too, though she bravely made it to the last 16. But do watch out for her in the hard court season ahead!
  • There was almost a fairy tale ending for Venus Williams, as she stormed her way to the finals, playing her 100th singles at Wimbledon in the process. 2 of her opponents enroute were not even born when she played her first Wimbledon back in 1997, while a 3rd opponent was barely learning to stand shocked A tribute to the great lady that she has not lost to a teenager in 13 years now!
  • It was still a fairy tale run for Magdalena Rybarikova too, as the world number 87 became the lowest ranked women's semi-finalist since China's Jheng Jie, then the world No.133, in the summer of 2008. Looking across the four Grand Slams, Rybarikova is the lowest ranked semi-finalist since Germany's Angelique Kerber, then the world No.92, at the 2011 US Open. This was Rybarikova's first quarterfinal appearance in 36 attempts at a slam!
  • But the one lady with a fairy tale finish at the Championships was Garbine Muguruza, as the Spaniard won her second Grand Slam title (after French Open 2016). She had reached the finals here at Wimbledon in 2015. None of us picked her to even reach the finals.
  • With most of our picks falling early, the one-odd pick here and there made the difference to our scores. Howie72 ended his slam title drought in style, picking Muguruza and Venus for the semis and CoCo Vandeweghe for the last 8, to finish with a very respectable winning score. Fifiona81 made it back to back silvers for 2017, after a silver at the French Open men's. paper_aero edged out srini701 for the bronze.
  • 2014 Wimbledon women's comp last saw a golden wood in our comps (N-Bomb and wwe84). After 11 slams and 22 comps, we managed to get a golden wood again as
ElfTwinkle drew a blank with all her picks. The fiery lady will be plotting a comeback, for sure!

Congrats then to Howie72, Fifiona81 and paper_aero, and do look out for the men's results coming up...

  • Eight Wimbledon titles in 14 years, a 19th Grand Slam title at 35 years 342 days, the oldest Grand Slam champion since the game turned professional 49 years ago, the first man in 41 years to win Wimbledon without the loss of a set....we can go on and on about Roger Federer's statistical achievements but let's stop here grin
  • Federer was imperious in his run to a record setting 8th title, even as all his main rivals (the "Big 4") struggled with injuries and fell by the way side one after the other. Rafael Nadal was ousted in the match of the championships by an inspired Gilles Muller, Andy Murray's hips finally gave him away in the quarterfinals and Novak Djokovic's elbow couldn't take it any further a day after Murray bowed out. Amidst all this, Federer waltzed through to the finals.
  • Marin Cilic was in superb form too till the finals. We all hoped for a big final (see our tie-break score for the losing finalist's games), but it was not to be. A blister caught Cilic cold and he wept on the court unable to put up his best. And so here we are, eulogizing a man for his second Slam title of the year at the age of 35 and looking forward to seeing him perform for some more years smile
  • Unlike the women's section which was wide open, it was always going to be real close in the men's comp for us too, with just 1 or 2 picks here and there making the difference. We picked 7 of the 8 quarter-finalists, surprisingly overlooking last year's quarter-finalist Sam Querrey. The pick of Gilles Muller gave ElfTwinkle and srini701 the edge but where Elf had Milos Raonic and Djokovic in her list (10 points combined), srini had Tomas Berdych (12 points). Those 2 points were all that separated the 2 in the end and srini701 makes it back to back titles after winning the French Open Men's comp in June. Fifiona81 made it a good Wimbledon for herself winning a medal in both sections. wwe84 takes home the spoon this year.
  • Congrats then to srini701, ElfTwinkle and Fifiona81 and see you all at the US Open in September.
