The problem with Video Games is that there are far fewer mixed quizzes than for movies, music or books. The hourlies (and GC up to division 7) stay away from quizzes that are specific to one work (which only a fan of that specific work would have a chance to answer).

As to being too focused on some subjects, I think the solution would have to be a general modification of the question algorithm. I personally don't mind Bible questions (even though I am not Christian), on the other hand, you could hear some unprintables from me when another mixed hourly is half "who played role X in Y".

We have 17 categories that can be used in hourlies and dailies, so in an ideal case, 10 question mixed-topic games (Hourly mix and New Questions) should use 10 different categories and those with 15 or 20Q (Daily, KO, FMI, Obscure) should not pick a category more than twice. Not sure how easy of difficult this would be to implement for Terry, so no promises...

In the western world, at least, the Bible has been prominent enough in idiom, art, and literature, for someone who has no association with Christianity or Judaism to still be aware that, oh, Noah has something to do an ark, Daniel has something to do with a lion's den, and so on.

And even if Religion questions were limited in some way by the system, it's possible for biblical questions to pop up in Humanities, Lit, Movies, Music, and General, making it seem all pervasive.

I do agree though that sometimes it seems awfully specific. I was brought up on bible stories but still struggle with having to know the life stories of all the apostles. Which one was the tax collector, again?

There are occasions when the hourly games do seem to pick from a narrow database. I'm fine with Bible questions (Christianity was part of my childhood and schooling) but the FMI set I had yesterday had two successive questions on positions in American football. In multiple choice, as least you can guess.

Mostly I don't get too bothered when this happens. Next time it might be cricket where I do stand a chance.

To add to Wesley's comment, I'd also like to see a limit of two duels per day for a given category. For example, yesterday we had 3 in Sci/Tech (Specific Math Topics, Sci/Tech, and Earth Science) and overall only 9 categories were represented. Despite winning all 3 of those yesterday I'd still rather have seen one of those pushed back to today.

I was also thinking that if there was a way to weight the frequency of categories showing up in Easy and Hard hourlies, then maybe Video Games could be added but in a way that it only shows up maybe once every hundred hours. That way experts in that topic would have an extra chance at some wins whereas everyone else could either learn more by playing or just wait until the next hour.

I don't think VG in Smartest and Easy is feasible soon, also because it's not represented in the single questions. That would probably break a few things. At the very least, we'd have to first solicit a workable database of a few hundred to thousand sufficiently generic and easy VG questions so that attempts to pull questions from singles wouldn't fail or cause excessive repeats.

(I'd myself like it - but it would probably be a lot of work to correct now. It would likely have been much easier to do years ago when singles were introduced)

Been interesting to read the responses everyone, thank you. The lack of Video Games Mixture style quizzes makes sense, although I was always under the assumption that questions were assigned to the three main hourlies by their percentage of correct answers. Would it then not be possible to draw easier questions from quizzes dedicated to just one game? I don't know the level of coding involved though so I suppose it wouldn't be worth the change.

That is another thing though, I had a few question ideas for video game single questions while away from the site then saw it isn't a category you can submit questions to when I returned. Could that be changed? I get why For Children and Brain Teasers aren't in the mix but Video Games seems to be a random exclusion.

I think this may have been suggested before, but I don't have 30 hours in a day to locate it. Is it possible to have a TEAM link to the current Who's the Expert game like the other hourlies have, across the Divisions?

How about, once a year for March Madness, the Funtrivia Knockout game ignores knockouts, wins, level, - anything - and just randomly assigns brackets for that week? It would give the underdogs a chance to test themselves against, and upset, some higher-ranked players. It would also give the higher ranked players either a week to take mentally "off" or let them hold up their honor and fend off their upstart challengers. Lastly, it would certainly throw a wrinkle into the fantasy pick-em mini game.

Personally, I think it'd be a blast to shuffle things up around NCAA Tournament time each year. I am also a bit sick of seeing the same folks week after week in my brackets during Knockout, and this week even my most consistent performance score-wise in months was not enough to win. So, I am a bit salty about that, and would love the confidence boost some new competition would give me.

Had a thought...........don't know if, or even how, it would work but an annual "League Knockout Cup"...........similar format to soccer FA Cup? Open to all FT Teams, irrespective of size...........1st Round..........."Non-League" Teams and League D & C teams, 2nd round ditto............3rd round Leagues A & B join in................need better brains that mine to work out the pros and cons, but might work?

I fear this would be pretty much impossible to run. Not all teams would really want to or be able to go an extra mile - the league games themselves already put some pressure to play and adding more to that would probably be too much, especially as it would create scheduling issues.

We've already set the league games to a level that we feel is about the most performance pressure we want to put on players. Also, having such an event would be a lot of coding for something most can't do much in (after all, 50% would lose on their first round and almost 90% would be out by the third...) and the team strengths here are far less even than in football - I don't see anyone below League A rank 5 having even an outsider's chance vs the Mossbacks in a direct match unless you use a very weird format that really puts it down to some 90 minutes of ultra-intense play.

Your probably right Wesley...........btw though, in the 150 years of the soccer FA Cup being held in UK (except for WW1 and WW2 years), no team from outside the Top 2 Leagues has ever appeared in final, much less won it.
However, the history of the competition is littered with famous "Giant Killing" acts, where a totally unfancied small team has knocked out one of the fancied major "glamour" teams......so what I invisaged was something like it:-

Each team to field 5 players (nominated by Team Leader)and 2 substitutes (which can be used if original choice unable to play).......so you have 5 pairings......each pair getting 5 questions(subjects totally random)......most correct wins (or in event of a tie, fastest time wins)

However.............I bow to your knowledge and if you say it is unworkable, fair enough, it was just an idea that came to me.

Hey all... I had a suggestion regarding the Author Rainbow mini badgelets. I wonder if it could be possible to implement the following:

1. A mini badgelet for bringing one of your badgelets to Tier 7. It's not easy to do if you don't write that many quizzes

2. A major badge for bringing 10 of the rainbow minis to Tier 7.

3. A super badge for bringing all 20 rainbow minis to Tier 7.

It would be up to the designer whether they would need to be "claimed" or given out automatically upon completion.

Any thoughts?

For the first one, having tier 7 on one of the minis should be its own reward.

The other two are essentially covered by Polymath. Your (3) is the only way to get Polymath to tier 7 and (2) is one of the many ways to get to tier 4 and above - it's intentional that it involves a tradeoff between depth and breadth at these levels. Also, we have the "full tier 2 rainbow" clause on 20/20.

Combined between Polymath and 20/20, this is already the most "earn challenges for earning other challenges" we have ever done on any specific area. We do not want to escalate this too much, most challenges should be standing on their own, not be based on accumulating other challenges.

By the way, you are very cordially invited to make history by becoming the first tier 7 owner on Polymath. I consider this a mythic-level task at least at the difficulty of Ascended. (If you want an even harder challenge, try 20/20 tier 7. THAT is as close to impossible as we'll make...)

I just realized that the Polymath badge was an oversight on my part. Now that I have gone back to take a look at it, I am at Tier 2. It's going to take forever to tier up to some of those higher levels... lol... I still don't have my Literature Rainbow badgelet yet! (ugh... not my strong suit)!

But achieving one "Tier 7" for a badgelet would be a great idea... Perhaps we'll see it one day!

Hello everyone! Under Stats & Hall of Fame, in the Recent section there is a list for Most Recent Badge Winners & Most Recent Mini Badge Winners, how about a Most Recent List for tier 7 completions? Or a tier 7 achievement section? This a new suggestiom, not a response to Hair bear. Sorry i'm new here.

Still no word on the possible addition of the Team link for the current hour of the Who's the Expert hourly. It's the only game still missing that feature. It's nice to see and compare how the rest of the team is doing in a given topic/hour.

I don't suppose you'd consider increasing the Fifty-Fifty game levels from 500 points (level 7) up to a 1,000?

It's such a fun game to play, but there's nothing to chase after the 500 points are reached - and I miss that.

Since we don't want to demote players who already have a tier, this would require a tier 8... or maybe we could just have a new badge "Winningest" that counts win points over all games and starts somewhere between 500 and 1000 for tier 1 with some pretty massive numbers higher up. That way, it would extend the path for all the games at once.

Is there any ongoing Thread on the site to inform players of the passing of various members?

Lonely-Lady has joined those sorrowful ranks. Her son informed one of our team members with this message: "I am lonely-ladys son, I'm sorry to inform you that my mother passed away recently on the 30th of may I'm sorry if you were good friends"

LL's profile states she lived in England. Her hobbies were "The three Rs plus crafts involving wool and being alone" - and that's enough to give anyone a lump in the throat.

But most importantly of all, perhaps, as an indication of her belief structure, her Comments quote states ""Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." - Theodore Roosevelt and "Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever." - Mahatma Gandhi."

I hope somewhere in the great unknown that her lonely soul has found rest, gentleness, and yes, that she will live forever, surrounded by many, many friends.

It's so easy, so very easy, to say hello, to smile, to perhaps even spend a little time now and then with a fellow traveler in life who is filled with pain and loneliness.

I wish I had.

She used to frequent the Chats. As I recall, she had no means of transportation, and had to walk a mile or more to the shops. I've looked around, and found a post from May 29, 2021 in the 'Tell a Story' thread: "On my next birthday I turn 66, the current retirement age for females in UK." She seemed a gentle soul. I'm glad she found enjoyment here.

A 'lovely' lady.
