We have received a few reports of extremely slow connections from Europe, particularly France and Switzerland.

This isn't a FunTrivia issue but an internet connectivity problem, likely a misconfiguration or failure at the backbone level of some Internet Service Providers that will make connections to FunTrivia and other sites on the same network in the US very slow.

You can work around that problem if you can configure a HTTP proxy server (look for a public server on the US East Coast for best chances to get a decent connection) or use a VPN. A member from Switzerland reported this alternate option:

Quote:
Ok, there is a work-around for this for those who know how to do it. I am using a VPN (Tunnelbear) to connect directly to the US and that solves the problem. You can offer that as a solution.

Unfortunately we can't offer detailed instructions for either of these processes - they change a whole lot with your system, operating system and browser.

We hope that the issues will resolve soon. We are unfortunately powerless to affect this - you might however want to report the issues to your internet provider if you are affected. State that you are unable to properly connect to funtrivia.com (if they ask for the IP address, it is 173.192.49.10) and describe any errors as well as the level of slowness you experience. That can help them to fix the issue. They might not even be aware of it at this time.

Team leaders or anyone who knows of affected players, please pass on this information.

I am one of the players hugely affected by this - since last Tuesday PM. I should be interested to know what ISP other affected players use. I use Orange.

I downloaded Tunnelbear and activated it. Don't even know what a VPN is, but it seems to be working - fingers crossed. Thank you to whoever sent in this tip. You may have saved my sanity.

Thanks for this info. My connection has been very slow for about three days and driving me mad. I had just put it down to Portugal and the extremely hot weather. It is the same when we get very heavy rain. Good to know I can maybe do something about it. Just have to work out how! Thanks Wes

Curious if Europeans are having problems connecting with other U.S. servers too, or just FT?

Don't use many U.S servers, but have just tried the large organization where you can purchase all kinds of things and have them delivered (not mentioning the name) and it seems fine.

Are you having problems right this minute on FT? Is it continual, or okay for stretches and then bad?

Our ISP is requesting the following from people having issues:

Run a traceroute to our server DURING a "slowing" event:

"traceroute 173.192.49.10"

or on windows:
RUN: command prompt

then type "tracert 173.192.49.10"

Then send the output to me via a PM.

Thanks!

I have downloaded "Tunnel Bear" and it seems much improved.

Would be great if you could help test without that veronica... can you please do the traceroute above from your normal connection, when the normal connection is acting slow? Tx

Will certainly try. I'm not great at these things and it is nearly 2am here. Will certainly give it a go tomorrow.

About trying a big name merchant from the US, don't the big outfits like eBay and Amazon use satellite servers to handle foreign traffic? If so, it's not a true reflection of speed connecting to a US site.
