- In an year in which no single woman was able to establish any sort of dominance in the Slams, it was possibly the best result in the end! In a women’s draw that saw the defending champion (Angelique Kerber) eliminated in the first round, only two Top 10 seeds reach the quarters and no Top 8 seeds advance to the semis, this final made the perfect sense.
- In Open era history, only once was there a final featuring two lower-seeded players - 2015, when No. 26 Flavia Pennetta defeated Roberta Vinci in an all-Italian final. In 2017, it was 15th seeded Madison Keys taking on unseeded Sloane Stephens in an all-American Final. It was the first all-American US Open women’s singles final since Serena Williams defeated sister Venus 15 years ago. Heck, for the first time since 1985, all four women's semifinalists at a major were Americans! And at the US Open, four American women hadn't made it to the last 4 since 1981!!
- So it made perfect sense for us here to pick everybody and anybody, and end up with some pretty lousy scores. 3 players (Dizart, Howie72, and N-Bomb) did have the final champion in their last 8 picks. One of us picked the other finalist to make it to the finals (Ozzz2002 picked Keys as his winner). And though Madison Keys was a more popular pick amongst us for semis (3 of us had her in our last 4 picks), Venus Williams found a backer too for the semis (in illiniman14).
- In the end, it was the one-odd pick that again made the difference. N-Bomb had Sloane Stephens (34 points), but srini701 picked both Sevastova and Vandeweghe (38 points) and those 4 points were the final difference between them. Howie72's pick of Stephens helped him land the bronze.
- Karolina Pliskova saved ElfTwinkle and gtho4 from a golden wood score, but the latter still takes our spoon here (on a tie-break).
- Congrats then to srini701, N-Bomb and Howie72 for taking the honours in the final Women's Slam for 2017....Men's results coming up soon...

- 5 of the top 10 players in the world were not in the fray....one of them (Andy Murray
) pulled out AFTER the draw was made, which meant the 2 best players at the Slams the whole year (Federer and Nadal) were in the same half of the draw...it didn't help matters that the "NextGen" players (Zverev, Thiem, Dimitorv, Kyrgios) all flattered to deceive, leaving one half of the draw totally lopsided.... - Well, someone still had to win 7 matches in a row to win the title and Rafael Nadal duly did that, beating the following players along the way (world rank in parenthesis): R1-D.Lajovic (85); R2-T.Daniel (124); R3-L.Mayer (59); R4-A.Dolgopolov (64); QF-A.Rublev (53); SF-DelPotro (28); F-K.Anderson (32)....reads more like an ATP250 or ATP500 tournament, let alone a Masters
....well, he can only play who's standing opposite him, so kudos to Nadal for his 16th Slam title - Pablo Carreno Busta became the first player in history to play 4 qualifiers at a Grand Slam on his way to a semifinal spot....no wonder none of us picked him anywhere in our lists
- ozzz2002 reserved his best for the very last Slam of the year....he was the only one of us to pick the eventual finalist Kevin Anderson, and had Del Potro making it to the semis as well! Just those 2 inspired picks would have been enough for him to win the whole thing
...he did thump the rest of the comp in a most emphatic fashion, scoring more than double the next best, and more points than the next 2 put together - 2 Canadians, George95 and LeoDaVinci, were the next best and they should be happy they walked away with honours in such a crazy comp!
- We needed tie-breaks to separate people all the way from 4 to 9, but srini701 needed no such luck...he went from champ to chump in a matter of hours, taking the final spoon in the Slams for 2017
- Congratulations to ozzz2002, George95 and LeoDaVinci then for landing the final Grand Slam tennis medals for 2017...and thank you all for joining me on a nice 2017 trip....until we meet in Melbourne in January 2018 then.....
